After graduating from Parsons School of Design, I began my career in fashion design and freelanced both in New York City, as well as London. I designed hand knits for Elle Magazine and was the editor of the Hand Knit Page before hand knits fell out of fashion in the early 1990's and the page was discontinued. In 2008 I launched my jewelry design business, designing fine jewelry in 18 & 20 Kt Gold with gemstones that I hand select for each piece. Several awards and numerous write ups & interviews later, I rediscovered hand stitching and my life took another turn, eventually leading me to improvisational stitching, which I teach workshops on: arianezurcher....
I was awarded an artist's residency in Orquevaux, France and began playing with paint on the fabric pieces I was creating, which rekindled my love of painting, abstract art and collage.
I sold my first felt embroidered xmas tree ornaments to a small shop in Northern California when I was 16 years old, sold a painting that same year and never looked back. And while I've had detours along the way: had two children, worked at an advertising agency, got into acting in my early 20's, published numerous articles for various magazines and wrote for the Huffington Post, I have always created in some form. Art is my love and remains so to this day.
I love inspiring and encouraging others to create as well and to find their voice through whatever medium suits them. So come with me as I explore the creative process in all its varied forms, strengthening and finding my voice, while learning to strengthen and find yours as well!

Love Anna from the 'beehive '. She got me hooked on backing all my stitching with pellon. The kind she uses is extremely thin,so it gives just the right stiffness and I find it easy to sew through.❤❤❤❤❤😊

I’m enjoying watching you find your joy in creating again. ❤ I’m working on a fiber texture piece and I’m pulling out all the braveness I can find to think outside the box. When I show this type of stuff on my channel it isn’t received well as I usually do embroidery, but I’m going to start showing it while I work on it because I’m learning I’m not doing it for anyone else. I’m doing it to find MY joy! Thanks for sharing Ariane. So glad to have you back again. ❤

    Thanks Ariane,
I will keep an eye out! I really love your work, was sorry to have missed the opportunity to take a class with you when you took a break and hope that I can get another chance! I live up in Maine and am part of a fiber art group that meets for a day once per month. There are just 6 of us, bet we have been meeting like this for years and I love the fact that we work in different media. I work mostly with applique and embroidery on felt and felted wool, but others in the group do fabric painting, printmaking, paper collage and altered books as well as 3d objects and vessels. The leader of the group is an artist named Natasha Kempers-Cullen and I thought I would write and tell you about her because you both have a similar whimsical, think-out-of-the-box approach to your work. She started as an art quilter (one of her quilts is in the Smithsonian collection), but now does fabric collage with matte medium on canvas and wood. She hasn’t published any books, but If you google her name, you can see a lot of her work. Hope you enjoy! Best, Laurie

keep in mind that no matter what you end up using for an armature it doesn't have to be uniform. for instance S-shaped pieces of wire here and there, or a strip of chicken wire placed on the diagonal etc. the tuffets are even better than the buttons!!
