I feel so sorry for almost everyone else who has an addiction to their phone and can never feel true freedom. The childhood she describes was the norm when I was a child -55 years ago in Eastern Europe- we made things, we made up our games and plays, we interacted (argued, reasoned, empathised and laughed and dreamed together). Everything could be turned into a game, boredom did not last long. and one could always just engage with nature around : watch birds, plants, insects or the clouds and make up stories. I loved just to sit outside and sing or make up a dance and imagined I was performing on stage..... I cannot remember depressed or hyperactive children. We definitely did not have much but the world was full of wonders! Couldn't we give childhood back to our children and grandchildren????????
But it sucks because know days us children can't do any of that anymore, when I walk outside there's tons of noise no back yard with grass no land to roam and explore let alone the fact it's to dangerous to even walk outside. I wish all the time it was still that way... To be aloud to go out side and see huge grassy plains and lots of trees I would go out side every day but if I where to do that in my current situation I would be kidnapped and rapped.
I do empathise with what you are saying Ethan- are you sure you'd be kidnapped or raped??? If you have some friends in the neighbourhood, maybe you could stick together and still find a bit of nature somewhere...unless you live in a big city without any parks nearby. Any gardening community projects going around? How about starting something like that? Clearing some mess and planting a few things that you could start looking after???? Do never give up! :o) Whatever you start taking care of will start taking care of you, too....
+Kati Beetles ...WOW, I see what you're saying but I do live in a... "Sketchy place" an ally way and it's really bad, but I understand how you're saying that I can try to find something to do, or to make the best out of what I have, or at least that's what I got out of that. Thank you
Ethan K. Yes, you got it right - the best way of resistance is refusing to go along with what is expected (apathy, giving up, following the crowd in its insanity and confusion)...sending my very best wishes to you! :o)

I mean, duh. She's not doing a Ted talk because she's an 18 year old who just entered college. Ted talks are all about have pretty women with little to no value in what they say.
Quotes from Ann Makosinski: "You have MORE opportunity and TIME to create when you have LESS." & "Think of all the possibilities OFF your phone, instead of ON your phone."
it's been 2 years since the last time I had a smartphone, it fell off the stairs and the screen was crushed which was no longer functioning, I took that as an opportunity to disconnect from the life of a lifeless to concentrate more on my study and have more time to be creative and enjoy living, I've never been this comfortable and organized with my life, once you disconnect yourself from the virtual life and look how people use smartphones during the day you will be stunned by how far it has gone, more like watching slaves on an unknown path. I turned 18 this week and i didn't use a smartphone since i was 16, which doesn't make me a cool kid as well, i've been criticized a lot by my friends and school mates, but that makes me even more confident. Technology is amazing, but don't let it take over your life! :)
Good on ya. I too lived without a smart phone for a year and at first I did feel self conscious about it because I knew I was judged for having such a phone. But months on I got use to it and never felt so free. Catching the bus and just taking in the scenery around me and just living in the moment. That year really changed my life, and made me realize how much we miss when we are glued onto our phones. I have a smartphone now but I'm not addicted to it and only go on it when I need to. "Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it" - Ferris Bueller.
We spent our childhood "entertained" with reading, walking, cycling, playing, swimming, visiting and hanging out with friends and relatives and "horror of horrors" studying text books. We read comics, played cricket, table tennis, hide-and-seek, tag, watched movies, play-acted. We had the greatest childhood ever.
absolutely great, what a brilliant young person you are. I am a teacher and I am going to have some of my students watch this. Keep up the great work! :)
What great work are you talking about? This video is about someone who is different and does things without a smartphone, not someone who talks about their work.
""Think of all the possibilities OFF your phone, instead of ON your phone."" Not a bad line to bear in mind. However, the irony still rings true how in order to be inspired by this, I had go online in the first place.
The automatic assumption that your phone is your sole window to the internet and people have no time to touch a desktop.. That's why she's spot on with most of this.
Smartphones helps us in many ways. I could watch this video too through my smartphone. It depends on individuals to make a positive or negative use of it. Just need to be careful and not spend too much time on it. That's all...!!! Anyway, she's got a good point too
Very careful, I agree they can be helpful, but I have very successfully navigated my life around not using one. I get headaches, nauseous, just an overall tired/ill feeling when I used my apple 6S, I upgraded and it didn't help. All cell phones emit some low level radio/micro waves. There are now many studies ie. the Reflex study, can google search it. Which have found low level EMF's from cell phones on many study participants damages single and double stranded DNA (a finding from the Reflex study). Low level EMFs is not as serious as xrays for example but studies are finding they are having negative impacts on our genes/DNA. Health is a blessing, I encourage people to take care of it.
Nice message !!! I am a former general shop teacher until 1999 and the state of Ohio dropped my program . Students now are taught how to buy something rather than make something. I can relate to your childhood .
I agree with most of her points (increase in creativity due lack of toys etc.) but to complete ignore the fact that smartphones and, on a bigger scale, the internet, can educate and help so much, seems foolish. Any kids can learn how to do anything through UA-cam, wiki how; can educate themselves by looking up facts, and open their minds. They can actively open their mind, look for information and then form their own opinion. They are not limited anymore, which I think is a wonderful thing. All knowledge of this world is in your phone. So you should start to lean how to use your privilege and not completely abandon it.
Do you still think this is true? I think lazyness and distraction kills creativity, therefore a smart phone can give you all the knowledge you seek, but you won't search for it since you can just distract yourself. There are so many things one can learn, but will you, or will the average/ordinary kid?
I really like this talk, I can relate to it because when I really need to buckle down and study for my exams I can completely turn my phone off for a week, and this minimizes why distractions
Cutting off completely with social media definitely isn't the way out . . But this girl really amazed me with her ideas !! & I quote it : - " When you are given less to start off with ,ur brain is designed to cm up with different ways to solve ur problems"
I got my very first smartphone at the age of 31 and that's because my mum decided she wanted to give me that as a present. I have never had the internet on my phone (mainly because I don't like monthly bills so it's prepaid) and am not involved in any social media apps. I listen to my music on my Sony mp3 player. I am a dinosaur.
@@Jamesgangcreative Exactly, it makes me giggle when non-cellphone users claim "I don't waste time with cellphones, I go to the mall/read a book/play sports/knit/talk to a friend!" Newsflash: all those are ways to WASTE time.

Why are they called smart phone in first place, they outsmart you with algorithms and make you dumber. At least here you see a smart girl with a dumber phone. She is on stage while we are on screen. Nice video
it's an individual choice, how can you work without a smartphone if you're working in IT industry or e-commerce? and it's a normal human behavior that most humans are tempted by technology such as latest gadgets and stuff... well if you can supporting old mobile phones such as motorola flipphones, sony ericsson, nokia then good for you... im still keeping the old nokias 5130, 6500, 6303 and sony w880 for everyday use of talking with people...
You do realize not even more then 20 years ago people Had a life and SURVIVED in it WITHOUT a cell phone, that one piece of metal is NOT the only way to communicate with people, you gata get out of that box, and this video explains that, so bad it didn't hit you in the brain/realized that
I can identify with her. Even though I had quite a few toys when I was young, I constantly modified them. I was never content with things that came from a store, and I spent more time modifying my possessions that using them for what they were meant for. This continued into adulthood, and became very useful for me. By that time, I was an artist, writer, and musician. I wanted Japanese drums (called okedo-daiko) for a musical band, but they were unavailable to me in California. So I researched them and built them myself. I late recreated a webpage with instructions for building the drums, and I received orders to build them for others including a stage show in eastern Canada. I later built most of my drums (African, Brazilian, Latin, Amerind) and I would walk through every aisle of Home Depot imaging how I could use the tools and materials meant for other functions in my drum-making. I 100% support what Ms. Makosinski is recommending.
I don't agree, there have been so many times where my smartphone helped me a shitton when I was outside (google maps as example, google translate while being in another country)...some people actually do have self-control and do not get addicted easily.
I totally agree with her on how to raise up your kids....you can’t flower your kids with toys and gifts, you give them the tools and resources so that they can use their imagination to build stuff and experiment...this is how you raise independent and imaginative kids who grow up and make a difference in society
People were more intimate with each other before smart phones, smarter, more creative, their phone bill was cheaper, didn't have to deal with so many outages and we had our privacy and could not be tracked.
Ann Makosinski, bravo. You figured out what is wrong with people today. They are so mired in devices, they are missing out on real life. Bravo! Stay real. Be yourself. Live and love.
Smart Phones are a huge distraction, the Mute button has been applied to almost all conversation now. When a couple goes on a date, they spend all their time looking at their phone, at family get togethers the same thing.
@@huhh6969 Didn't say you would not succeed in Life, just that a fixation on your phone instead of your Family members and Dates is no a very healthy relationship with either.
She's so cool! A great talk! Creativity comes from the limitations our brain has to fight with. Like when you're bored in class, a simple pen and a piece of paper become sooo entertaining. Magic huh. Gotta remember that when I start feeling like I need this great expensive tool to get better at something or to start doing something. (a new camera to start studying photography, for instance) That expensive set of clothing to feel good and look stylish. Something I pretty often fall into. Other people just do all the creative work for us, and we simply pay money. No joy of creating. Recently I've been wanting to change things up in my room. But it costs so much - and will I be happy after investing a fortune in it? And I found great inspiration in people who buy furniture on craigslist for a few bucks and refurbish it. Gives stuff a personal touch, sparks creativity - and lets you save so much (furniture costs a lot!). Already did my table - got it for free, sanded and repainted in white and it's the cutest table ever now! Also minimalism is the way to go. Currently working on giving away and selling stuff I don't wear or use. Wow that's an essay right here haha.
Man, you guys need to watch the TEDx Breaking Free From Technology. This is a good chat but in practice won't work. The issue of technology is much more profound that it seems.
I admire her so much! I'm going to try to get a flip phone tomorrow. I have had an iPhone since I was 14 years old and a smartphone since I was 11-12 on and off. I'm 20 now and I am SICK of it!
Go for it buddy, but use that time you get to do something you really want. Did you know that most successful entrepreneurs actually use old brick phones or flip-phones as well?
I got an Ipod when I was 10, I'm now 13 and finally have been disconnecting. I regret ever letting the peer pressure of others allow me to have online presence. Now I am far more entertained by small things than I once was. Nonetheless my childhood was ripped from me because of social media and, i'm glad I can regain it now.
Nice talk. The title really does not fit this video tho. It made me think that this video will be about something like phone/internet addiction or stuff related to that. Really misleading and confusing.

"Think of all the possibilities OFF your phone, instead of ON your phone."
@Zeno 6282 I like how you just assumed you won the argument.
it's been 2 years since the last time I had a smartphone, it fell off the stairs and the screen was crushed which was no longer functioning, I took that as an opportunity to disconnect from the life of a lifeless to concentrate more on my study and have more time to be creative and enjoy living, I've never been this comfortable and organized with my life, once you disconnect yourself from the virtual life and look how people use smartphones during the day you will be stunned by how far it has gone, more like watching slaves on an unknown path. I turned 18 this week and i didn't use a smartphone since i was 16, which doesn't make me a cool kid as well, i've been criticized a lot by my friends and school mates, but that makes me even more confident. Technology is amazing, but don't let it take over your life! :)
I don't know how did your brain function to let you reply on my comment something that has nothing to do with someone being gay.

""Think of all the possibilities OFF your phone, instead of ON your phone.""
Not a bad line to bear in mind. However, the irony still rings true how in order to be inspired by this, I had go online in the first place.
Yet if you were offline, you wouldn't need inspiration in the first place, you would be the one being recorded telling others how to be inspired.
The automatic assumption that your phone is your sole window to the internet and people have no time to touch a desktop.. That's why she's spot on with most of this.
Phones can be used to find inspiration and make stuff too, just saying (After all they are just computers these days)
The key is not having too many distractions...
Nothing ironic about it. She wasn't saying people shouldn't go online. I think you missed her point.
Smartphones helps us in many ways. I could watch this video too through my smartphone.

I used to know all the telephone numbers by heart. Now I don't because I don't dial them anymore, I just click on it 😔
I really like this talk, I can relate to it because when I really need to buckle down and study for my exams I can completely turn my phone off for a week, and this minimizes why distractions
A box of number 2 pencils and a stack of printer paper can be enough to inspire creativity.
💯

Even worse that they skipped the part where she took the rest of her clothes off.

Already did my table - got it for free, sanded and repainted in white and it's the cutest table ever now!
