@Vincent Clay Thank you for the suggestion. I already know about Toastmasters. I used to live in Denver. They obviously are successful at their goal. But I feel their process is more focused on the effects, the results. I feel like it's like cheerleading. The stimuli is external (world championship of public speaking?). I always try to approach things from a spiritual perspective.

There is a sixth hindrance, most agree: Greed. This is desire; as in the desire for things to be other than they are actually and right now. In prison I learned "it's all right here." Or as another remarked, the greatest obstacle to happiness is our idea that there's a way things should be.

    5 Hindrances
    1. Sensual desire (pleasures & distractions)
    2. ill will (negative mind)
    3. Slothful body & mind (lack of energy, lack of motivation)
    4. Restlessness (worry about the future or regret about the past, unable to stay in the present)
    5. Skeptical doubt (indecisiveness)
Each of these hindrances is placing a dark cloud on your mind.
Solution: Align and structure your life to prevent these hindrances from arising.
4 Steps to remove these Hindrances
    1. Recognize (what state of mind you’re in)
    2. Accept (accept and allow situations and people to be the way it is/they are)
    3. Investigate (your emotional & mental state) - “why did it come up?” “what is the consequence if I remain in that state?”
    4. Non identification (practice “I’m not the body, I’m not mind, I’m not my emotion, I can just see all these 3 aspects about me”)

Hi, I'm 18 and I had already came up with the idea of those principles and been already preventing those hindrances. My idea was not as clear as those given hindrances but I had an idea that those stuff were affecting me and preventing me from studying. So not really 1000 years ig. It's just not everyone really realizes this and keeps repeating the same mistakes.

@@3f3f-y4m These teaching of letting go , being present and learning to turn inward(through meditation) and letting go of the identification and attachment to the body , mind and emotions has been taught for millenia. You saying that you had already come up with those teaching all by yourself is very unlikely or you don't really understand the message. Specially if you live in the western world where The system is setup to look for everything outside of yourself and never learning to "know thyself"

Hi @@forexdissector9565 I am not sure how deep it is taught and practiced in Temples, but I was talking only about the very hindrances mentioned in the video. Sure, I haven't come up with the practices and teachings you mentioned and neither did he mention them in the video. However, I had come up with an idea that those hindrances were affecting me and I have been always trying to prevent it. For example, I have realized that to keep on a steady pace of studying 12-14 hours a day, I should go to library. Because home is too comfortable. I stop caring about goals at home. I should not have fun with friends for long, because if I do, my discipline and focus is ruined and I should build it all over again. There's more but I hope you got the idea. Thanks to my trials to trying to realize what's going on with myself, what's causing it, and how to prevent it, and thus studying hard, I got accepted to a top 50 university with full ride scholarship as an international student Alhamdulillah. The speech given by Master Shi Heng Yi has so much wisdom indeed, it cleared my ideas and sorted them into categories, and therefore my respect to Buddhism and teachings of Shaolin temple increased to more than before.

Took some notes for myself and now sharing them for anyone who might find them valuable :)
    5 Hindrances to Self-Mastery
    1. Sensual desire (sight/touch/taste/smell/hearing) = Am I addicted?
    2. Ill will / aversion = Am I feeling a negative emotion?
    3. Dullness / heaviness = Am I unmotivated?
    4. Restlessness = Is my mind jumping from though to thought?
    5. Sceptical doubt = Am I indecisive?
    Rain (is the solution)
    Recognise which one you're experiencing
    Accept that's what you're experiencing
    Investigate why you're experiencing it
Non-identify with that experience: 'i am not the body, i am not the mind, i am not my emotion'
I wish the talk would go on for longer and if he could share stories of people overcoming each of them :)

Almost 14 years ago I participated in a program in the Shaolin temple where he used to live. This guy taught me proper meditation and breathing skills and shared his story with me. Absolutely fantastic person with an unbelievable amount of discipline and a mind which is the strongest I've ever encountered. One time the other 3 guys who were in the temple and I couldn't keep up with him and the monks and we fell behind during the morning routine. As punishment we had to do 500 push ups which sounded completely unreal but he said we won't get to eat unless we finished it. He said all this in a very calm voice and we just did it. He taught me how to achieve anything if you're disciplined and calm enough. 非常谢谢师父!

What is important in this lifetime?
    1. Sharing with others
    2. Connections
    3. Training, developing, and enjoying yourself by doing nothing or finding the time to do the things you love to do.
All of our lives are too unique to copy the path of someone else. To bring meaning and value to your life, you need to MASTER YOURSELF and don't let hindrances stop you.

    • @11soWoo
      @11soWoo 3 роки тому +4

@@tubomania in case you didn’t get it, the story of the travelers and the mountain is a metaphor to symbolize personal growth, so it’s not a literal mountain. That’s what his whole speech is about. You’re not gonna meet the master or anybody there. He also mentioned 5 hindrances, I think you’re victim to 2-3 of them either a skeptical doubt or negative mind/aversion or both. The master mentioned 2 types of travelers, what he didn’t mention is a 3rd traveler, that’s you 😂😆
Let me put it this way- You have people that work hard to get to where they are at in life to achieve their own goal and overcame the 5 hindrances. Then you also have people that depends on others to achieve that goal. You also have people that think the goal is impossible and doesn’t quite get it and chooses not to have any goal at all.
The master’s story is one of many symbolisms. You can apply it to any scenario and the rules still apply. Let me give another one,
I have friends that are MD from med school because thy studied hard and didn’t need anyone’s help and wasn’t born with a silver spoon, i also have friends that were sociable and had help in finishing their education via study groups/family/friends support, and then I also have friends that goes “college is not for me” without even trying to apply, “i’m too old to go to school,” or “i’m not smart enough.” Either their negative mind had clouded their judgement or made the decision for them or they’re just too lazy iono. If you don’t care about your personal growth then no1 can help you in that regard because only YOU can do it, it’s personal for a reason. I joked about it all the time to my my wife “huney, can you go pee FOR me?” she was like “what? that’s impossible! Your bladder is full, not mine”😂 Then, the next time chocolate came around, she didn’t save me any, she was like “ughh...I ate it FOR you??” .....🤦‍♂️😆😂 (don’t mess with women) 🤦‍♂️

@Oh Dae-Su Any form of sensory experience can be used as meditation. Meditation references a particular state of Being. That state is dependent on a conscious choice by the Self in how it views and experiences the present moment, regardless of whatever's happening or being perceived in that particular moment.
This TED Talk is just as much a valid form of meditation as spending an hour or two sitting in one spot and repeatedly bringing your awareness back to your breath. You're approaching this like meditation is a specific computer program, when really it's seeing how all binary code is still just a bunch of 0's and 1's regardless of how the code expresses itself.

I have been avoiding this video for years, thinking “I don’t want to be lectured or taught something in such a disciplined and cold manner, as the monks go very deep into and make me uncomfortable” but everything this man uttered had a place of good intention and understanding just how difficult this self journey can be if we do not have the right track to go. I stumbled into this video on autoplay while dozing off and I was amazed at how focused this speech was, and how some thing as simple as mountain climbing stories let us know what is happening within our self destructive behaviours. From what I heard, now there is a root for me to make more conscious choices and not identify too strongly with what I experience day-to-day.
The first step was admitting it and now I hope to begin my walk on you all and see things clearly.

7:52 Clarity: More Clarity - Better Decisions (You can distinguish for yourself which is the proper direction to take, which decisions need to be made)
9:15 The Five Hindrances. Different states of the mind. In those states it is very hard to see clearly and therefore make good decisions.
    1. Sensual Desire 9:43
    2. Ill Will/Aversion 11:08
    3. Dullness/Heaviness 12:16
    4. Restlessness 13:13
    5. Skeptical Doubt 14:09
15:07 Align and structure your life in such a way to prevent those hindrances from arising. If you’re not successful, you need to use techniques to remove them. Simply remember one thing. Just let it R.A.I.N.. This is a four-step method to help you remove those hindrances. The first step is, RECOGNIZE in what state of the mind you find yourself in. Afterwards, learn to ACCEPT, acknowledge and allow the situation or a person to be the way how it is, to be the way how they are. INVESTIGATE your emotional and mental state and ask questions. Why did it come up? What are the consequences if I remain in that state? Ultimately, NON-IDENTIFICATION is the practice; I am not the body, I am not the mind, I am not my emotion. It’s just that I can see all these three aspects about me. ALL OF OUR LIVES ARE TOO UNIQUE TO COPY THE PAST FROM SOMEONE ELSE. To bring meaning to your life, to bring value into your life, you need to learn to master yourself.

@@przemysawkusmierczyk9513 I’m no expert man. But I think it’s more about the opportunitie itself and letting it come to you and when it does, you won’t hesitate to follow thru with it.
The man in the story had a desire to climb the mountain which led to desiring to know what the mountain looked liked at the top, before he even attempted it himself. Therefore removing the desire to even do it.
If it’s something he wanted to do. The first thing he should of done, is let it go and just focus on the things he needed to do as person to be able to even make the climb in the first place. Also he shouldn’t forget to just live life and enjoy it. When the opportunity comes he would of been ready for it and have the choice in doing it or not. Cause if you desire something. He is not free from this, he has simply lived a life of practicing knowing the truth of this, therefore he sees "the enemy" even with eyes closed. He is indeed someone who can help others find that they are not invincible, nor are they a waste of space. The past is as real as the enemy we choose or choose not to see. Let us deal in wisdom to overcome our common enemy; OURSELVES. The mind is the forefront (frontline battlefield) where our choices manifest from what we do not see to the things we do.
