- Meet Shaolin Master Shi Heng Yi in his serene talk about self-discovery. Learn why rainfall is an essential part of each flowering. And every small step - part of the journey to the highest peek. The hindrances along the way to self-discovery and personal growth are easy to overcome. Learn how from his talk. For more than 30 years, Master Shi Heng Yi has been studying and practicing the interaction between mind and body. His strength is the ability to smoothly combine this knowledge with physical exercises and to practice Martial art -Kung Fu and Qi Gong. He has an academic background but he prefers to live at the Shaolin Temple Europe, Monastery located in Otterberg, Germany. Since 2010 he has been taking care of the settlement and he personifies the sustainable development and spreading the Shaolin culture and philosophy. As a contemporary monk, Master Yi holds a smartphone in the folds of his clothes as he sees no contradiction between living together with ancient knowledge and high technology. “The universal law of being successful and happy at the same time means finding the balance”, says master Yi. And as for flying - yes, he really can do it! He only needs a stick and a little space. We expect him to fly-in and share about the Shaolin way at TEDxVitosha 2020.

Love that well said
Dude doesn't even say "um." He knows what he is going to say and is confident about it. Clarity rings true within.
It helps when you take pauses like he did, plus he probably learned how to stray from the rushed life society imposes on us
"Um" is not in the Shaoin vocabulary. The occasional "er" is acceptable, however ... 9:19, 15:02 for example.
He did once say “Uh” @9:20

I got panic when I saw the clock kept running and he only got 3 mins left while he was not finishing. Seriously, I got super anxious and worried. But seeing him being so calm makes me realize that my anxiety is what I need to deal with. And his strong mind really says something about the stability of oneself, being mindful and calm even when others are pushing us
That's what I was thinking😅 and you are absolutely right
Same. I thought "He's talking too slowly, he's not gonna make it".
Relaxxx people ❤😂
He never said “um” or “so,” any other filler words/sounds. Amazing.
It's not really. Not downplaying anything. But when you consider what the word amazing really describes he's just being present. The amazing thing is that people need fillers.

@@vincentclay9895 Thank you for the suggestion. I already know about Toastmasters. I used to live in Denver. They obviously are successful at their goal. But I feel their process is more focused on the effects, the results. I feel like it's like cheerleading. The stimuli is external (world championship of public speaking?). I always try to approach things from a spiritual perspective.

I am from a poor & developing country, people said that I never have a chance to study abroad because I don't have enough resources but I manage to save money and apply to learn Master degree in US with financial aid program. And finally I get the US Visa for studying. There are people happy for me but there are still people keep telling me I am nothing, I could not climb that high mountain. There are still many challenges ahead, sometimes I am scared but I still keep going. Be strong to discover the world.

Hi, I'm 18 and I had already came up with the idea of those principles and been already preventing those hindrances. My idea was not as clear as those given hindrances but I had an idea that those stuff were affecting me and preventing me from studying. So not really 1000 years ig. It's just not everyone really realizes this and keeps repeating the same mistakes.
@@krinj.hub2 These teaching of letting go , being present and learning to turn inward(through meditation) and letting go of the identification and attachment to the body , mind and emotions has been taught for millenia. You saying that you had already come up with those teaching all by yourself is very unlikely or you don't really understand the message. Specially if you live in the western world where The system is setup to look for everything outside of yourself and never learning to "know thyself"
Hi @@forexdissector9565 I am not sure how deep it is taught and practiced in Temples, but I was talking only about the very hindrances mentioned in the video. Sure, I haven't come up with the practices and teachings you mentioned and neither did he mention them in the video. However, I had come up with an idea that those hindrances were affecting me and I have been always trying to prevent it. For example, I have realized that to keep on a steady pace of studying 12-14 hours a day, I should go to library. Because home is too comfortable. I stop caring about goals at home. I should not have fun with friends for long, because if I do, my discipline and focus is ruined and I should build it all over again. There's more but I hope you got the idea. Thanks to my trials to trying to realize what's going on with myself, what's causing it, and how to prevent it, and thus studying hard, I got accepted to a top 50 university with full ride scholarship as an international student Alhamdulillah. The speech given by Master Shi Heng Yi has so much wisdom indeed, it cleared my ideas and sorted them into categories, and therefore my respect to Buddhism and teachings of Shaolin temple increased to more than before.

5 Hindrances to Self-Mastery
1. Sensual desire (sight/touch/taste/smell/hearing) = Am I addicted?
2. Ill will / aversion = Am I feeling a negative emotion?
3. Dullness / heaviness = Am I unmotivated?
4. Restlessness = Is my mind jumping from though to thought?
5. Sceptical doubt = Am I indecisive?
Rain (is the solution)
Recognise which one you're experiencing
Accept that's what you're experiencing
Investigate why you're experiencing it
Non-identify with that experience: 'i am not the body, i am not the mind, i am not my emotion'
I wish the talk would go on for longer and if he could share stories of people overcoming each of them :)
you are great
Keep is going ! share your story.

This is why I've always liked eastern spirituality. So much kindness and compassion.
How about just being kind and compassionate?

What a beautiful message at the end "see you at the peak'. Kind words from a wise soul.
"All our lifetimes are too unique to copy the path of someone else"
"Even if you walk the same path in the same way it will always be a unique experience"

"All of our lives are too unique to copy the path from someone else".

Not really that unique.
The truth is even if we're trying to copy others our path our journey will be unique.not the same

2.惡意(消極思想)
3.身心懶散(缺乏活力,缺乏動力)

5 Hindrances
1. Sensual desire (pleasures & distractions)
2. ill will (negative mind)
3. Slothful body & mind (lack of energy, lack of motivation)
4. Restlessness (worry about the future or regret about the past, unable to stay in the present)
5. Skeptical doubt (indecisiveness)
Each of these hindrances is placing a dark cloud on your mind.
Solution: Align and structure your life to prevent these hindrances from arising.
4 Steps to remove these Hindrances
1. Recognize (what state of mind you’re in)
2. Accept (accept and allow situations and people to be the way it is/they are)
3. Investigate (your emotional & mental state) - “why did it come up?” “what is the consequence if I remain in that state?”
4. Non identification (practice “I’m not the body, I’m not mind, I’m not my emotion, I can just see all these 3 aspects about me”)
Thank you for the wonderful summary.
Thank You 💟
Useful Thanks
Five hinderance is clearly specified in the sutras, and the ONLY solution, also specified, is four foundations of mindfulness.
However, his solution is totally unheard of from Buddhism.

I have been avoiding this video for years, thinking “I don’t want to be lectured or taught something in such a disciplined and cold manner, as the monks go very deep into and make me uncomfortable” but everything this man uttered had a place of good intention and understanding just how difficult this self journey can be if we do not have the right track to go. I stumbled into this video on autoplay while dozing off and I was amazed at how focused this speech was, and how some thing as simple as mountain climbing stories let us know what is happening within our self destructive behaviours. From what I heard, now there is a root for me to make more conscious choices and not identify too strongly with what I experience day-to-day.
The first step was admitting it and now I hope to begin my walk on you all and see things clearly.

Almost 14 years ago I participated in a program in the Shaolin temple where he used to live. This guy taught me proper meditation and breathing skills and shared his story with me. Absolutely fantastic person with an unbelievable amount of discipline and a mind which is the strongest I've ever encountered. One time the other 3 guys who were in the temple and I couldn't keep up with him and the monks and we fell behind during the morning routine. As punishment we had to do 500 push ups which sounded completely unreal but he said we won't get to eat unless we finished it. He said all this in a very calm voice and we just did it. He taught me how to achieve anything if you're disciplined and calm enough. 非常谢谢师父!

"Align and structure your life in a way to prevent these hindrances"
1. Recognize
2. Accept

There is a sixth hindrance, most agree: Greed. This is desire; as in the desire for things to be other than they are actually and right now. In prison I learned "it's all right here." Or as another remarked, the greatest obstacle to happiness is our idea that there's a way things should be.

@@T3RRY_T3RR0R Right?!
Yes! At first I talked back to him in my mind, “I feel it. How dare you tell me I am not my feeling?” Then I realized what he meant. My emotions, my thoughts and my worries are just the state of minds or actions and they are not ME. We suffer because we identify ourselves with our state of feelings or doings.
Same here, if an 18 minute video can change your perspective and restore faith in yourself wholly - then imagine what years of buddhist training can accomplish. I deeply admire the wisdom these people carry within themselves, but also the discipline.
Then who are you?

As a child, when I didn't have much control over my environment and I wasn't able to just be inside my room undisturbed and not go to unimportant events because of my parents, I was able to accept my environment. I suffered in the noise, the social anxiety, the judgement, the stress, the standing around, the heat of the sun etc. It toughened me up. It made my body and mind adjust to that environment and see it as "normal". Once I saw discomfort and chaos as normal, I was able to sit in it peacefully. I was hurting and suffering a lot but I didn't think of it as unfair, and thank god I didn't. It was the best childhood I could have ever wished for. It taught me how to be at peace with suffering. Once I was able to do that, I was able to fully feel actual peace inside my room or when sitting outside somewhere looking at the clear blue sky and hearing birds chirping.
Calmness is a superpower that doesn't seem to need any real effort. All it needs is for you to let things go. To stop controlling and just experience. To stop reacting and just feel. To stop thinking and just be.

@@11soWoo No one's EGO can climb that mountain. Think about it. How can You meet anyone at the peak? Obviously, when You are there - it is not already You and definitely not the Master.
@@tubomania in case you didn’t get it, the story of the travelers and the mountain is a metaphor to symbolize personal growth, so it’s not a literal mountain. That’s what his whole speech is about. You’re not gonna meet the master or anybody there. He also mentioned 5 hindrances, I think you’re victim to 2-3 of them either a skeptical doubt or negative mind/aversion or both. The master mentioned 2 types of travelers, what he didn’t mention is a 3rd traveler, that’s you 😂😆
Let me put it this way- You have people that work hard to get to where they are at in life to achieve their own goal and overcame the 5 hindrances. Then you also have people that depends on others to achieve that goal. You also have people that think the goal is impossible and doesn’t quite get it and chooses not to have any goal at all.
The master’s story is one of many symbolisms. You can apply it to any scenario and the rules still apply. Let me give another one,
I have friends that are MD from med school because thy studied hard and didn’t need anyone’s help and wasn’t born with a silver spoon, i also have friends that were sociable and had help in finishing their education via study groups/family/friends support, and then I also have friends that goes “college is not for me” without even trying to apply, “i’m too old to go to school,” or “i’m not smart enough.” Either their negative mind had clouded their judgement or made the decision for them or they’re just too lazy iono. If you don’t care about your personal growth then no1 can help you in that regard because only YOU can do it, it’s personal for a reason. I joked about it all the time to my my wife “huney, can you go pee FOR me?” she was like “what? that’s impossible! Your bladder is full, not mine”😂 Then, the next time chocolate came around, she didn’t save me any, she was like “ughh...I ate it FOR you??” .....🤦♂️😆😂 (don’t mess with women) 🤦♂️
Today "it comes Up" watching this for the forth time, I have connected with my situation and feeling my self seeing me & began to find stable of my emotion and clarity of my present situation. Thank you for your teaching and sharing.
I’ve lost count of how many times I have listened to this video. Recently, I went out of my way to find it and reincorporate it into my repertoire.
This speech is worth listening to more than a popular song.

I learned that I am a master of my own self from watching this. Always have been, learned it all years ago through my own trials. Life has an odd way of allowing you to learn all of this on your own, you just can't let emotion control you; understand that you control it. You have to know that you are not your mind, your mind is a part of you. Your body does not decide how to act based on the two, you control them all simultaneously, forever. You always have...
One day I hope, we all may learn this at a younger age...and be thankful for being in such control.
Thank you. 🙏🏻This talk is incredible! And resonates within me. ❤

It's important to work on both. We need balance everywhere in our lives.
Building the body and mind often go hand in hand. The world is chaotic because everyone's trying to fit in the restaurant.

To get off bad habits I got into martial arts it saved me it was a tripping ordeal. When I went into my place of training I felt as if I was entering a temple and bonded well with others there. In jujitsu I was only in there for 3 months and instructor stopped class and said he never seen anyone improve in such a short time. I sadly never got a brotherly connection in a church but did well in any martial arts school so far.
I'm back again after many months to listen to what he explained again, finally happy that I'm at a better state of mind to be able to comprehend all he said clearly, the mental fog gone almost completely and I'm way healthier and evolved in many aspects. Thank you for sharing these with all of us.
Wow
Congrats UA-cam friend. I share a quote of mine: "We should never stop evolving" ;)
The most important part is practicing. "I am not the body. I am not the mind. I am not my emotion. It's just that I can see all this three aspect about me"
Even though it is extremely hard 😭😭.
💟 *That's because you are the Impartial Spectator, the Watcher - the real you is "One" with G'd, your Divine Soul. And therefore your actions will be without the 5 hindrances, based on love, what is needed in the here and now, as "G'd's Spirit" further directs the way you should be.. Salvation comes from true self-realization.* 🙏🏽
@@sallyironic4251you are the awareness behind them. You are something higher than the body, the mind and the emotion. You are the thing that´s aware of these three things. Pure consciousness.
That is a lie. You ARE the body, the mind and the emotion.
Just pasting that over your experience won't free you from appropriating the body and the mind, though. You actually have to stop acting out of your appropriation of these things.

"Enjoying your time, even doing nothing"
Truth to hapiness. Learn to be happy whenever, wherever with yourself.
Yeah I'd imagine thats hard to do. Maybe someone who just got out of prison may find that easy, I dont know
I dont know if the right word is "happiness". but perhaps being content and undergoing and accepting whatever is thrown at you.
True happiness comes from within. If it is dependent on material things or circumstances you are doing it wrong.
@@danieldufur7474 when you undo all the extra conditioning (including dopamine overload from hyperstimulation) and re awaken your natural life energy then yes it does actually feel like joy and happiness
I have always been a generally happy person. I really think it is either because of my childhood, genetics, or choice/perspective. I choose not to worry because one day I will exhale my last breath-that is something to worry about-everything else is a gift.
This man has no desires. He’s totally free from all things we cling onto that keeps our fragile egos from dismantling. thinking if we let it go, then our life itself ends. But in fact that’s when it finally begins. Lives end cause they can’t get over themselves. I’m finally starting to get over myself and my mind is becoming more free everyday I wake up.
Amazingly explained thanks for sharing these beautiful words to this englitened monk.👍🏼
No desires? i thought, he want to climb some mountain...
@@przemysawkusmierczyk9513 I’m no expert man. But I think it’s more about the opportunitie itself and letting it come to you and when it does, you won’t hesitate to follow thru with it.
The man in the story had a desire to climb the mountain which led to desiring to know what the mountain looked liked at the top, before he even attempted it himself. Therefore removing the desire to even do it.
If it’s something he wanted to do. The first thing he should of done, is let it go and just focus on the things he needed to do as person to be able to even make the climb in the first place. Also he shouldn’t forget to just live life and enjoy it. When the opportunity comes he would of been ready for it and have the choice in doing it or not. Cause if you desire something. Do you really have a choice in it?
Trying the best to articulate my thoughts and what I’m trying to say. Sorry if doesn’t make much sense mate.
@@Area-5l I see you have some serious insights on this. I'm glad. My provocative comment was supposed only to show that even "enlighted" monk can't escape from paradoxes, which life mostly consist of (in my opinion).
Wish you luck.
He is not free from this, he has simply lived a life of practicing knowing the truth of this, therefore he sees "the enemy" even with eyes closed. He is indeed someone who can help others find that they are not invincible, nor are they a waste of space. The past is as real as the enemy we choose or choose not to see. Let us deal in wisdom to overcome our common enemy; OURSELVES. The mind is the forefront (frontline battlefield) where our choices manifest from what we do not see to the things we do.
I will tell you something about yourself Master Shi Heng Yi. You are intuitive, kind, slow to anger, thoughtful, intelligent, resourceful, very good looking, you had to fight the self to achieve the inner stillness. You win because you can work until you get what you want. Others look up to you and you don't have to have that, to feel like a success. You are amazing! I would love to know you!
This was one of the most inspiring TED Talks that I have seen. Thank you for sharing your wisdom.
"I am not the body, I am not the mind and I am not my emotion" -such a powerful thought
No you are not
The essence of Indian spiritual thought from which all indic religions emerge from.
I m just another bakchodi of nature 😂
If you are not body, if you are not mind, if you are not emotion then who are you? You are a combination of all 3. If you are to emotional, you become animalistic. If you are too disciplined you become a mechanical man. Exist in the middle free to flow back and forth but always returning to center.
@@dsvet awesome commment "If you are to emotional, you become animalistic. If you are too disciplined you become a mechanical man." Everything in this life is about balance and the hard part is keeping that balance on everything that you do
