    Sadly, I think this is common in many of our cities. It's certainly happened in my home city of Cardiff. The city centre, once one of the nicest outside London, is now an utter disgrace. Yes, the councils shoulder much of the blame - but we, the public, are also culpable. By buying online we've sent a wrecking ball into our high streets and city centres. If you want them to survive and thrive, support the shops. It's not that difficult. If you don't, you really can't moan when your city/town centre resembles something out of dystopian movie.

      Totally agree with you. I was down at Cardiff arms park in 2005 for the Wednesday play off final, the town centre was still buzzing them. Shoppers and councils are both to blame, Sheffield council haven't a clue and are wrecking on purpose to turn the city centre into one big University campus with High rises everywhere Hugo.

    In my view, the Norfolk Market Hall was a building of major historical and cultural significance to the development of Sheffield but you can add the name to the list of many fine buildings that have been demolished and erased forever, in the name of modernisation.

      Angel St before it was bombed was like a Fairy tale. Arundel gate/charter row roads bulldozed through the city centre after the war destroyed so much. The Corn exchange was a beauty.

      Angel Street's facade's were stunning, each and every building complemented one another. The Corn Exchange is another favourite of mine. The drop Gothic arches that helped to create the veranda (of sorts) on the ground floor are noteworthy. The Victorians had a great sense of purpose and optimism.

    Makes me mad to see this. I have great memories of coming to Sheffield as a 17 year old in the mid '70s as a new apprentice at British Steel and getting out at the station every evening on my way back to my digs. Still can taste the fish supers I had on my way to my bus .

    Being a Sheffielder, I know the area so well. I used to go to, the Boardwalk, Co-op, and ABC. Yes, things have changed. Knocking down the markets was shocking. It's just a wasteland. So what was the point?. The new market isn't the same. Do you remember Big Ada?. Had a barrow on Dixon Lane. Sad the old town hall isn't used anymore. I used to drink a few times in the Cannon, a scary place, not forgetting the Hen and chickens. Excellent video. Thank you for this. A bit sad to watch. The old lady who had a Weighing-Chair at the very top of Dixon Lane. It was Brass & Red Velvet & you could sit in it while it swung & weighed you for 1 penny. People weren’t bothered about how much they weighed in those days - so very few people were over-weight.

      Its been completely destroyed. I know we went through massive job losses in the 1980s due to the cutting of jobs in the steel industry, but town was still buzzing. We, as consumers, need to hold our hands up too. First the supermarkets, then the out-of-town drive-to retail parks, and now Amazon. Ultimately we've very much helped shaped the environments we have. Yes, business rates and parking charges have a lot to answer for, however if we're truly honest with ourselves we've spent orders of magnitude more than our grandparents could ever dream of doing so on some 'nice to haves' (rather than 'need to haves') in exchange for, at best, perhaps just a factor or two marginally better life. And all without any real care for the long-term impact on family-owned and -run local businesses and our wider communities. If we deep-down really, _really_ cared we would have resisted those few extra tat toys, latest iphone or clothes and holidays abroad for the intagible benefits resultant of ensuring our communities and town centres remained vibrant and relevant. We reap what we sow. We have only ourselves to blame.

    Excellent video Tim. It's truly tragic to see what's happened to our once great city. Castle house with it's spiral staircase was amazing and even more so during Christmas. It had a wonderful homely feeling. Something you don't get when trawling through meadow hall. BHS, the markets and Red Gates had a similar feeling. Knocking down the markets was a huge mistake. Total rip off car parking charges and poor access have put many people off going into town. I for one haven't been in town for over 5 years and i do miss it, a lot. Doe's anyone know what's planned for the market area?...Offices i suspect..! Cheers Tim.

It was at the end of the summer on a Saturday evening as I made my way from the train station to the Novotel near the old registry office. The town centre was deserted under a purple sky...It was like being in an art house film! I'll never forget that moment of surreal solitude!

    It’s somewhat unfair to blame the council for something which has happened to dozens, if not hundreds, of towns and cities in the north and midlands. The reason for the death of town centres is the motor car. I remember Crystal Peaks opening, then Meadowhall. All the convenience of the city centre with free parking. There’s just as much retail trade, if not more, it’s just located out of town, more conveniently.
    I’m afraid the world moves on. Whether this moving on is progress or not is a moot point.

    • @timawells
      @timawells  Рік тому

      Its very fair to blame Sheffield council. They have done everything possible to make it a nightmare getting into Sheffield with a car, they removed all the cheap parking at the bottom of the Parkway for Saturday shoppers and moved the market to the bottom of the Moor, when it has been there for 700 years. Back in 1985 when I worked at HSBC, from 1985 to 1995 I could park on the road for free off Tenter St, then they started restricting parking. Then they stopped us driving down the Parkway and through town and made the journey in and out of Sheffield a nightmare. You will find Leeds and Manchester are thriving shopping centres. Why allow Meadowhall to be built in the first place, if they didn't have the plans to do what they are now doing with the Universities.

      @@timawells You’re quite right that Manchester and Leeds are doing well in their city centres but they’re exceptions. The decline in Rotherham town centre predated and has been more severe than that of Sheffield yet it’s a different council. The local economies of Sheffield and Rotherham have simply never recovered from the decline of the steel industry. Same is true of where I live now, Stoke on Trent, which has lost its potteries, collieries and steel industry. The urban decay in Stoke is quite staggering, much worse than Sheffield, and it does not have Meadowhall to compensate.

      I know Stoke well I worked there and a girlfriend came from there. I can't believe what has happened to Hanley. But Sheffield are Rotherham are a total mis management by the council. Sheffield council doesn't want cars in the city and want to turn it into an University campus with High rise flats. They destroyed the city centre putting the supertram in which isn't fit for purpose, then destroyed it when upgrading the Moor as they left that part of town closed for over 10 years. now they have done the same to Fargate and High St. They could have competed against Meadowhell if they hadn't shut out cars or provided a decent transport system. @@WilliamHayes-Wood-gg5hr

    I understand your disappointment in what's changed, but I think it's the same as what's happening all over, not that that's any real consolation. I don't doubt the council have mismanaged things - here in Northampton they bankrupted themselves years ago due to corruption and terrible decision-making. With the cost of living so high and wages stagnant, people don't have much disposable money, and shopping online is simply the cheaper and easier option now. Going and wandering around shops or having a few pints in a pub have become middle class ways to spend time.
    I'm considering moving to Sheffield in the next few years. It has excellent proximity to nature with the Peaks, lots of students due to the 2 major unis (I consider this a positive), loads of pubs and restaurants, several pockets of interesting independent shops, a decent music scene, affordable house prices (comparatively), and of course friendly people. Not as much to do as Manchester or London, but significantly cheaper and greener. And it's not too hard to get to either of those cities or Leeds for any specific events.

    • @timawells
      @timawells  10 місяців тому +2

      They spend money making things worse. But I can't understand how exchanging 70,000 producing steel jobs for 70,000 students who are heavily in debt, that debt is taken on by us in 75% of cases and non producers. 90% of these students should be in their home cities doing worthwhile apprenticeships. The students get to vote in Sheffield, clear off and leave us with disastrous Labour; Liberal and Green policies. P.S. All the decent pubs have gone and where are all the bands?

    • @thegrinderman1090
      @thegrinderman1090 10 місяців тому +1

      @timawells The shops and restaurants that once stood in the areas in your video would surely still be there if they were profitable. All that student accommodation is ugly, but it makes a lot of money, and allows the older housing in the surrounding areas to stay affordable despite the influx of students. And i know this goes against my previous point, but Sheffield also has the highest percentage of students anywhere who choose to continue living in the city after graduating, so i dont think they're voting against the city's interests (at least not knowingly).
      I don't think these are partisan issues anyway, the tory council bankrupted us here, and I dont have any faith in labour either. The housing crisis is forcing people to migrate north, and no party is seriously committing to build more housing to solve it. People further south in the country literally can't afford to stay in their home towns. Half of my friends have moved to Manchester, Sheffield, or Leeds already, because they offer more for less. It's true, we're part of the problem for those perhaps like yourself who have lived in Sheffield for generations, but what's the alternative for us?
      I've only been to Sheffield a handful of times so far, but it's better in practically every way than Northampton (shocker!), while being cheaper. Easy access to stunning nature has become extremely desirable too since everyone was locked in during covid.

      You need to understand the history as a Sheffielder. The council allowed Meadowhall to be built then removed cheap car parking in the city. The markets have always been in the Castlegate area for 750 years, so what do they do, move them to the other side of Sheffield. I am against the modern Universities which I see as a money fraud destroying Sheffield, funded 90% by our money, when we should be manufacturing cleanly in Sheffield. I understand your predicament, I worked around the UK in the 90s for Midland Bank/HSBC, big bang and mass immigration into London has caused the issue you know have. I saw this coming back in the early 90s, I dreaded working in London. Back then Sheffield was still Sheffield. Best Tim

      @timawells Thanks Tim, I appreciate your perspective. You're right, it's easy to gloss over the details when I don't know the history, as i have no attachment to its past. I do hope we enter an era of councils seriously being held accountable for their actions, and perhaps the glory days of Sheffield can return. I'm vaguely left wing and the son of an immigrant myself, but I think it's idiotic when people don't accept that there are some major downsides to immigration.

    I think if Sheffield Council goes bankrupt then let it fail because it has been mismanaged like many councils. I think what city planners need to get back to is the fundamentals of cities i.e why we have cities in the first place. This fundamental reasons is for the need to people to be together. This may be for social reasons, business reasons, markets (which you can include shops in that equation). The councils services should be minimal serving necessities such as infrastructure and services maintaining the city. All track and tracing technology should be removed so Sheffield isn't a technological open prison. Folks of Sheffield should be more proactive and engage with the Council for feedback regarding development plans so their needs are met. Its sad to see Sheffield City centre fall in such decline and its a reflection on the management and people in general. You get what you deserve.

    They keep coming up with " regeneration plans " every few years .fargate itself is a prime example it's around every 4 to 5 years they hatch a regeneration for that alone.
    They should have played to our strengths small middle size shops along with home chains cheap parking have two markets good night life along with music and pubs few cinemas Theatres mixed into to our histrionic aspects .
    As you said out on the inner ring road get manufacturer's etc back cheap deals .
