Like many viewers I suspect, I can remember when Sheffield Castle Market was so packed, it could be a squeeze to get round - and it co-existed with the Sheaf Market, the Setts Market, the old Rag and Tag, and the stalls on Dixon Lane, as well as the market at the bottom of the Moor. The new place isn't a market, it's a mall, and a piddling one at that. It was obvious that few traders would be able to afford the high rents there, but Sheffield City Council wouldn't care. Markets all over Yorkshire are being closed down.
So sad,, I'm 46 and I used to go to the markets (Castle, sheaf and the outside) with my mum when I was a child she had specific meat and fish stalls she would buy from and we used to have a little plate of hard ends or cockles,, I used to want the prawns but I think they were a bit more pricey😂,, but it's such a shame,,,the new market has no character or characters and I think this change was definitely not for the better,, but in my experience it seldom is
Sheffield City Council should be prosecuted for the way they have killed Sheffield and its communities and the way they have killed off treasured memories for the people of the city !!! Absolutely disgustin and criminal the new market down the Moor is awful and not a market its a shit hole
I got dragged around there aged 0 til about 11 years old in 1980 my earliest memories were wafting the cig smoke from my face from many cups of tea breaks from the many cafes my mother and all my aunties went in - they all smoked park drives 😁👍
I used to get dragged round every week as a child. But I loved it and remember Harringtons and the clothes shops . I shopped there for myself when I got married . Absolutely loved it and all the memories I have with my nan and my son
Excellent documentary, with good photography and production. It may be an old and tired place ( without the investment that was needed ) but it is full of character, unlike the sterile environment down The Moor.
The Moor area is slowly being transformed as the nice old looking buildings are being knocked down and are being replaced with modern ugly and sterile and cold looking buildings. The less said about the new modern Moor Market the better as its nothing as compared to the old Castle Market.
Wasn't the plate of mussels for me. Mam and me would stop upstairs for a toasted tea cake and a milky coffee Saturday afternoons. I worked in the Sheaf Market twice, fruit and veg and men's clothes (not Harringtons). The men's clothes stall had a telephone. We didn't have a telephone at home.........
I remember Robert the butcher wow so sad to watch this 😢 my nan used to be security here in market I used to run and play around the stalls it was safe to do so back then I miss these days
The place always stank of fish, meat and bleach, and towards the end attracted it's fair share of undesirables BUT it had character, was architecturally very distinct and always busy. I miss it.
Erm,it stank of fish and meat because it sold FISH and MEAT, not rocket science is it? and bleach at end of day because it was cleaned every day. Same as any other market in the uk.
The whole area from Fitzallan sq to Ladies bridge looks like a bloody war zone now. Empty shops, dirty, dodgy characters hanging around, it's disgraceful.
Ruined. You wouldn’t even get me going to the new market it’s too far down the other side of the town and even in the day you don’t feel safe. Those people back then were real sheffielders which is now a dying breed.
The worst thing was to move the castle market. They should have rebuilt the market on the same or nearby site it was in. The moor market is OK but definitely not a patch on what we had before it really is a sad situation. Sheffield City Council has failed the residents, market traders and many visitors to Sheffield

Sheffield city council are corrupt and fraudulent. Sellouts to developers and pocket more money at the expense of business.

Absolutely.

The market at the moor is a disaster the old castle market was fantastic
I.Agree
The moor market is terrible compared to the old castle market, so sad
My grandma used to work at a cafe in the centre of the food hall down the ramp as you go in the main door. Loved going there on a Saturday.
What an amazing film.

I miss the real Sheffield
The constant flow of looney councillors have ruined Sheffield!
Disgraceful. Our council should hang its head in shame. :@
They should be prosecuted Marky Marcus

What did you expect it to smell of, roses?
@@gama3302 It wasn't a criticism, just an observation.
The new market down the moor is another example of social engineering by the political zealots in our town hall.

Very true love your videos too :)
The original market was .ten times better than the new onr
Labour run council and they continued voting Labour.
Desperate to know what the final song and vocalist might be... Tried Googling lyrics Sitting Alone here on a Stone... no joy. Can anyone help? Xxx

I loved castle market it was a shit hole but it made Sheffield what it is
Having a trog around brilliant.
