I've had my 2010XKR for over 10 years. It passed 199,000 miles last week, and in 55 years of driving, is the finest, most reliable automobile I've ever owned. Pulleyed and tuned to about 600hp, it's been tracked dozens of times, and is still my daily driver. It's still too good to give up. Great car!
Absolutely love my XKR as my everyday car. Have had it for 5 years, I drive the shit out of it. The more the government fcuks me over on fuel costs and car tax, the faster I drive and enjoy it. 🤗
the XR truly is the British Mustang, such timeless design, the older I have become the more attractive this car has become to me, regardless of package the XR is just a gorgeous piece of machine, with a glorious soundtrack to go along with, I have looked these cars around, sadly they are basically out of reach for the regular folk, which makes me so jealous of Britain's second hand prices, you guys are truly blessed, cheers !
Please don't say a Mustang! Mustangs are cheap and nasty things that can't even go in a straight line fast without chucking itself into the nearest roadside ditch or tree! Jags have class and luxury. The only similarity is the V8 and RWD. A Mustang is closer in reality and purpose to a Focus ST, reasonably priced, decent performance and reasonable practicality.
we may be blessed with the up-front cost of the car here in Britain, but trust me, we get stung hard for insurance, road tax, and especially fuel, in the US, even with current price rises, petrol is stupidly cheap compared to the price we pay in Britain, it's getting scarily close to £2 per litre, diesel is even closer to that mark, so in the long run, one of these is probably cheaper elsewhere! 😅
I think the Mustang has only evolved to become close to an XK in the current generation. Previous ones were much more brutish, raw, difficult, unrefined.
I have never really had the sense that my 2012 XKR changed the steering weight when in dynamic mode. I had a quick read of the service manuals for both the facelift car and the early car and it describes that the power steering rack is variable ratio for parking, plus there is a 'servotronic' system which is electronically controlled to change the weight. However, the weight control is only speed sensitive. Additionally there is a set of steering maps but these are selected with the vehicle configuration file based on vehicle model and tyre fitment - so that's a manufacturing time thing or dealer change, not a run-time thing. So I conclude that the only reason it feels like the steering weight changes in dynamic mode is that you're driving it faster in the test and it's the speed sensitive part you're feeling.
I've never understood when reviewers say a dark headlining makes the car feel claustrophobic. To me it makes the car feel more cosier 🤷🏾♂️ that is prob the most stunning Jag I've ever seen, exterior wise.
@@benpenagonzales6014 I think it was a great styling effort on a limited budget. More complete than the earlier xk8 and as I have said before, nicer than the F type. Definitely a future classic when it comes to the design. Obviously they suffer with the modern car longevity problems, clearly alot have gone to the recycling which is a shame.
You’re becoming an XKR expert James; that’s at least 2 x X100 and 3 x X150 reviews now on my count? Your best review yet on one of these cars. Well balanced. All true and you clearly like them …. quite a lot. So, when is one going to appear on your shopping list so you can join the the rest of us XKR owners and always be able to enjoy what must be one of the most underrated GT cars out there?
I am the owner of this car that James reviewed here. He made a comment on my car and possibly some of the other XKRs that he has reviewed that the six speed ZF was reluctant to when driving in normal mode too change down a gear or gears. This was at the time a comment I completely agreed with. But I just wanted to update the review that, that particular aspect of the car in the past week has had a full gearbox service and oil change done. This cost approximately £150 but has been money well spent as the gearbox performance has generally improved and sharper and particularly with its willingness to change down a gear or gears. Additionally since James’ review I have had The Apple car play system fitted to link up with my iPhone 11. This has greatly enhanced and modernised the entertainment and communication systems in the car. Roger.
Glad to hear Roger - those auto box services are often overlooked, and can make such a difference! They should have stayed part of the service schedule but lots of companies cheaped out when introducing service packs and made them "lifetime" items (yeah, right)
@JScott-ms1zl Yes still got it and because I love it so much, it’s a keeper I am hoping. If you are interested in test driving one I have noticed there are a couple currently for sale on Autotrader. One at £34,995 and one at £36,995 with The Car Agents in Hitchen Herts where I bought mine, they were fine to deal with and seem to get a few of these rare 75’s. At realistic money these the only two I have seen for sale since I bought mine. Regards Roger
Beautiful car especially that rear end with the quad pipes ...I drive a V6 F-Type but still have a real soft spot for those older XKR's ...good video by the way 👍
I can see my XKR from the window at work. It's Friday afternoon and I mentally checked-out hours ago. Eighteen minutes to go and we'll be heading for the coast road. :-)
This is my dream car. I'm 1 year away from getting one. I just need everyone else to continue sleeping on these stunning machines, so there are still some available then!
Excellent review video. We are well and truly getting spoiled with the Jag content recently. Looking forward to the XKR-S video. I have a 2007 Botanical Green XKR and absolutely love it. The S has always been a favourite particularly in French Racing Blue.
Very nice review. Had an XKR 4 years ago and loved it, yes dated inside but v nice to drive and reliable. Great soundtrack. Backseats are truly useless, not wrong there.
Lovely thing. These and the other celebratory models like the XKR100 (celebrating what would have been the 100th birthday of Sir William Lyons) and the XKR Silverstone (celebrating the 2001 entry of Jaguar into F1) are a guaranteed future classics. I do miss owning a Jag, few things are that special blend of luxury, class and performance. You're a very lucky fellow to have been able to drive so many examples, James!
You sold it to me with those wonderful opening shots…. I was half expecting Matt Monroe to star singing and be transported to the South of France on a mountain road! Lol
Spent a few hours in my black XKR this morning, I put the windows down just to listen to it, for this time of years, it's a welcome comfort to have heated seats n wheel.
Ian Callum is a design god alongside Guigaro and the othertop tier greats. I was lucky enough to work with JLR design years ago and met him a few times in the pub after work, great bloke but truly a genius artist.
I sold my XKR last December due to a move back to Ireland from Germany, bloody miss it so much... I probably should have kept it but €2,500 per year in road tax was a major factor and no garage for storage...
This car has absolutely timeless, classic design. I always felt it was Jaguar's answer to Corvette and it was some kind of modern take on Porsche 928 / BMW E31. As a Porsche 911 owner I gotta say this might be favorite non-Porsche car. The sound is amazing.
The XKR meets all the criteria of cars that I shouldn’t have parked in my garage: -long-hood -narrow-body -outdated-infotainment system -bouncy-ride (when driven slow) -70s looking interior (seats, doors, dashboard) -wrong color exterior in a sports car (black!) -etc… But after watching so many videos talking about it being the best hidden jewel in the GT world and probably becoming a future classic I was tempted to drive one. And boy they were absolutely right! I bought one here in California in May 2022 and I am super fascinated by the ton of potential this car has, this car is really a carmodder’s dream!!! 15,000 bought me a stock 2007 XKR w/ 4.2 supercharged engine with barely 70k miles; I think this is a steal for the price and I am so excited about the big changes I’ll be able to make to this car for less than $4000!!! -lowering-springs and spacers $1100 (parts & labor) -side-fins from an Audi RS5 to make car look even lower $300 (since sideskirts for the XKR are so hard to find) -paint-correction $500 (paint is still good for a more than 10-year old car though) -powder paint wheels & exhaust 🛞 to black $600 -blackout front grilles, side, and rear emblems $500 -black Alcantera interior ceiling upholstery $350 -change all interior/exterior bulbs to white LEDs $60 -remove F19 fuse that controls the active valve system, keeping valves open 100% of the time for better, throatier, raspier sound! FREE!!! The looks and handling of this car is going to be even more amazing than the enthusiast here claim it to be… I will upload before/after pictures when I am done with my project 😎🍻 BTW… the car sitting next to it in my garage is 10-years newer and over $100k more, a $2017 Carrera S. 2007 XKR = Great Value for your money! 💵
It’s interesting to to see that so many people who love the XKR don’t like the F Type R. I’ve got a 2015 F Type R and would happily park an XKR next to it in my garage if it weren’t for the idea that my wife would kill me for having done so. The F Type R successfully wooed a younger audience which is something Jag really did need. Cadillac has been trying for years and can’t get it right. Every time I drive my F Type I see enthusiasts in their twenties looking at it getting excited about Jaguar. I think it was a great move and it’s definitely a true Jaaaaaaag. I love the XKR too. I still look at the prices from time to time.
I wouldn't say bargain at 40k when theres the R for much less or the RS for about the same. Then theres everything else of course, but a lovely review all the same. I went for the Gran Turismo in the end as its back seats are usable and what a noise.
Matt Farrahs The Smoking Tire video on this car is what sucked me into the modern Jag era. Ive had the XK, XKR, XKR-S and now the XKR-S GT. The RWD slightly scary acceleration and sound… Love it! Actually a little more exciting then the P8. You ever make it to the States Jay, give me a holler. You can drive them side by side.
Mike Cross was never the head of Engineering at Jag, he was the head of Vehicle Integrtity which was more of a vehicle sign off for all attributes but generally with a strong bias towards dynamics. The fuction sat within Engineering.
Loved the Jeremy tradition about the Jag. IE Plenty of room for the golf clubs in the back. "How else are you going to get people to pay you the money they owe you?"
Another great video James, i’ve never seen one up close and personal, we don’t see many cars like this in my part of the world but on tape it looks like a db7 crossed with a vanquish.(again from what I’ve seen on film)..beautiful Jag 👍
Absolutely thrilled that you you’ve finally reviewed an Xkr-75! I have had mine for just over 4 years and I’ve loved it to bits - it turns heads everywhere I go (probably because of that growl). You nailed the changes they made and you were right that the actual power produced is higher than specified, in mine, by about another 17 bhp. But it is a product of all those changes the engineers made and never disappoints me… except for the tyres. I thought I had a problem when I first collected her and for a few months due to it being unsettled and a little unnerving with the backend being very happy to give you a few surprises. It turned out to be old PZeros and after I changed them for the P4S’s, the difference was nothing short of astounding both in the wet as well as the dry. Just one of their thing - for those iPhone owners out there, there are a few apple CarPlay solutions available out there all thanks to the wiring installed for the rear parking camera that wasn’t. Not cheap though. Thanks for the review as always - brilliant work.
Good Morning Lawrence, Is there any chance I could talk to you re The Apple Car Play install. I am Roger the owner of The 75 that James reviewed here. With Thanks Roger
Hi Lawrence, Roger here the owner of The 75 James reviewed. For some months in the back of my mind I have wondered whether any other 75 owners including you would like to meet up and chat. Of course biggest problem apart from you and I, I don’t know who they are. Through Jaguar Clubs I belong to I might be able to find a few and am assuming that at least in this country the 25 possible owners still have their cars on the road? I would not be offended if you have no enthusiasm for this idea. Please let me know what you think, do you know any other 75 owners? If we are to take this idea forwards we need a better means of communication than this. Best Regards Roger.
Very nice. A XKR was on my shopping list along with a lotus exige and a Aston Martin vantage. However i found my self buying a F type in the end which i have to say i dont regret. If only my garage and wallet was big enough for 1 more item.
Compared to the XKRS I like the rear end and the spoiler on the XKR75 better, it just looks like it's supposed to be on the car, and not a bolt on after thought like the RS cars. I very much liked , and still think the XK series is a very lovely design and the boost to the 5 Liter engine made all the difference to the GT performance of the car. With that engine and supercharger you have torque for days wherever and whenever you want or need it,...and that burble turned roar is such an addictive noise!! If I were in the market again for a GT car now that I'm in my 50's the Jaguar XKR and limited variants are very attractive and suit my needs much better than the Toyota Supra Turbo I had in my late 20's and early 30's.
Another excellent review James......You sure on the availability of JagDroid for the XK range? Currently looking at an XKR for purchase....Once the novelty wears off, the ability to upgrade the standard infotainment is high on my list of option upgrades required for daily use....
I don't think Jagdroid is available for the X150 is it? That system is quite different to the stuff in the X350. Had a quick look on the website, couldn't see any evidence of availability.
I was locked-down with Covid for the last couple of weeks. Guess what I was Googling on the Sales sites? Yep XKs, all of 'em. Cracking value at the moment, can only go up.
Hy, many thanks for this review! Sorry for the late comment but did you get the chance to drive the 2008 XKR-S as it is dramatically hard to find any real test drive of this previous (very rare) version of the XKR, less powerfull but also with a supposed better handling ?
I'd love to have bought one of these, but being my fifth car, I couldn't rationalize the 50K these are now. I found a 2009 XKR Portfolio with 70K miles for $20K which is almost as good and almost as rare.
Go for the standard 5.0 XK, it gets the power down more easily. The XKR does look better to me, but for most people driving them you'll not want in a standard XK.....plan to get one spring '23 after the prices (of all cars) has tanked...sorry folks but that's just the law of averages! Oh, all V8's sound great!!!!
I think the Jaguar is better looking than the equivalent Vantage of the period, and is certainly rarer, the Vantage was almost ubiquitous where I live, but no doubt the Jaguar loses out on snob value.
You could paint this car in a tiger pattern and put chrome spinners on it and it would still look brilliant. I prefer this over over the F type all day long.. I wouldn't mind seeing this with the front and back of the original F type R, even though the F type is just a shortened version.
This is a drive through North Yorks scenery tourer. Seldom pushed on. Occasional on a long straight. Not a twisties but at 45 I’m never in an Exige to want to. I drive slow. It’s ride cum steer feel I desire. With sound. . XKR75 / XK Exhaust delete not heard of. Middle section delete doesn’t half put a smile on the face. It’s a beautiful package.
The daddy Jag is music to my ears, I am sick of four pot fake sounds piped into speakers 🔊 and mapped exhaust with fake snaps, crackle and pops that sound like a clown 🤡 is inside the car boot smashing pots and pans together whilst they driving 100 miles in a 20mph zone. Sad these soulless computer aided cars needs to driven fast and yet the owners always want more bhp. This Jag is from that golden era when sports and GT had distinctive sounds, even Scoobies had its signature flat four sound. This Jag is so refreshing and a brutal reminder of the superiority of a V8 especially those NA engine with unrestricted sounds. Sorry for my rant I feel better now to cope with London’s menace of fake pop and bang championed by four pot hatch backs that can hit 0 - 60 quicker than a rabbit gets f**ked! 😀
I love every single detail of this car... except the headlights. They are so wretched that they ruin the entire car for me. Which is heartbreaking. Still wanted to watch the vid though!
Shhhhhhh......I'm considering getting one of these at the moment, and don't out the secret that they are a relative bargain or they will go up like....everything...else.....literally.....everything....else.
Now *that* is a noise ladies and gents, no DSG farts and 4 cylinder AK47 popcorn crackles
4 bangers need love too
Welcome to a cross plane cranked V8
Worse still 4 cylinder diesel with the DPF and resonators removed they sound so crap it's comical.

No problem Roger, I’ll dig out the information and put a link in here. I do believe there ls a UA-cam video of it.
Hi Lawrence,
Roger here the owner of The 75 James reviewed.
Hi Roger - awfully sorry - here’s the link: ua-cam.com/video/B7PohXbVe9E/v-deo.html
If there’s any chance of a meet up, that would be great! Even going to a xkr/Jaguar meet would be a hoot!
Would you be interested doing a review on my Jaguar XJ portfolio in Santorini Black with Ivory white leather😊
Nicko McBrain in Iron Maiden loves Jaaaag´s. And he loves the blue color.
What a sound 😍
Another excellent review James......You sure on the availability of JagDroid for the XK range? Currently looking at an XKR for purchase....Once the novelty wears off, the ability to upgrade the standard infotainment is high on my list of option upgrades required for daily use....
I don't think Jagdroid is available for the X150 is it? That system is quite different to the stuff in the X350. Had a quick look on the website, couldn't see any evidence of availability.
There is a version out there that converts the satnav box to CarPlay/android auto. There have been lots of problems with the screens failing though
That sounds so nice...
If only I could afford a XKR. I just love them!
I have a 2005 (one of the last) XK8-S Jaaag, and until watching this video have never considered moving to an XKR 150. Until now.....
Thank you, I have been asking this question for a while. Which is the best to buy? Now I know.
James, rather than the V8 Vantage, wouldn't a DB9 be a more obvious alternative? How does the Jaaaag stack up against a DB9 of the same vintage?
I think the db9 has aged better looks wise, the screen in jag ages it a lot too.
When jags were decent. Thats a beautiful machine
They should have done 1 more facelift for this car with an updated infotainment system. One of the sexiest cars jaguar has made.
The dogs would fit just nice in the back of it 🤔. Just need 50k..
nice car. Love the rims/wheel setup.
That exhaust sounds perverted! 🤪
I was locked-down with Covid for the last couple of weeks. Guess what I was Googling on the Sales sites? Yep XKs, all of 'em. Cracking value at the moment, can only go up.
Even now I find it difficult to believe that they cancelled the beautiful XKR and replaced it with the bland F-type.
Hy, many thanks for this review! Sorry for the late comment but did you get the chance to drive the 2008 XKR-S as it is dramatically hard to find any real test drive of this previous (very rare) version of the XKR, less powerfull but also with a supposed better handling ?
That noise… holy crap that noise.
Awesome motor and awesome review as always!
I'd love to have bought one of these, but being my fifth car, I couldn't rationalize the 50K these are now. I found a 2009 XKR Portfolio with 70K miles for $20K which is almost as good and almost as rare.
Loving the jag content, you should buy one jay
My father ran one of the xkr dynamic R for a year and it was a great car, it did lack steering feel though
I agree the later Ftype coupe body looks unfinished in back
Another car which has grown on me. It lacks, however, the timeless beauty of the XK8.
I think any X1xx version of the XK are excellent. I'd love a XKR Coupe but I would settle for a standard V8, in convertible spec of course.
Growling like mad dog .,the car !
a proper jaaaaag
I think the Jaguar is better looking than the equivalent Vantage of the period, and is certainly rarer, the Vantage was almost ubiquitous where I live, but no doubt the Jaguar loses out on snob value.
That creature moving under the hood at 3:43 is freaking me out.
I was going to buy an XKR but the interior was a big let down - XFR was much nicer strangely (so I got one of those)!
You could paint this car in a tiger pattern and put chrome spinners on it and it would still look brilliant. I prefer this over over the F type all day long.. I wouldn't mind seeing this with the front and back of the original F type R, even though the F type is just a shortened version.
I have an X100 XKR, The ONLY reason I have never swapped it for an XKR150 is that these ones don’t fit my golf clubs...
On my shopping list
That thing sounds nasty. Dirty. I love it.
Bring on the project 8
Loved my XK, but it was so expensive to maintain.
You should try my 2011 XKR, which is basically that as standard thanks to the dynamic pack, but convertible :)
Thanks J! a fine looking & sounding car, shame the interiors seem a bit bland. Sitting in the F type, I thought the same.
There used to be two rules about 2nd hand cars. 1) don’t buy a used Jag. 2) see 1
have you reviewed a monaro
I had a vxr for 2 years. Lovely car
Brilliant
2008 XKR-S was before this and has many of the same extras.
You didnt mention this at all??????
My dream car/edition
Funny because I’ve always thought JayEmm was a brutish British bargain of a car journalist!
Cheerio maye!
I love every single detail of this car... except the headlights. They are so wretched that they ruin the entire car for me. Which is heartbreaking. Still wanted to watch the vid though!
Shhhhhhh......I'm considering getting one of these at the moment, and don't out the secret that they are a relative bargain or they will go up like....everything...else.....literally.....everything....else.
what kind of rims are those on the xkr
