    Wow!!!! Thank you so much for having Thomas Lang on here!!! He is absolutely my favorite drummer because he works so hard. He loves the drums and it shows in his playing. He is very dedicated and I love his sincerity and I would love to take lessons from him. His drum technique and grip made me happy because that is exactly the grip I learned to use and mastered from my own drum professor. I think Thomas Lang is truly a drumming genius of our day and I would love to have more of his lessons on here!!! I wish I could go to boot camp and play Canada, Canada, Canada... :) ...I love his ideas and he inspires everyone to play better than they believe is possible. Do you play doubles above 200 bpm without using fingers ? at some higher tempos like 230 and above even with fingers it's almost impossible for me unless I use Buzz rolls or press rolls, is it normal or am I doing it the wrong way?

    • @TheRadrussian1
      @TheRadrussian1 7 років тому +2

      Ouarem Cracken you still use the fingers. but its more of a stroke and then a squeeze. the fingers give the rebound stroke more power. the first stroke is just dropping the stick and the second is done mostly with the wrist.
      just practice getting more power out of the second stroke instead of the first stroke and youll eventually figure out how it should feel. so its r R l L instead of R r L l. when its up to speed theyll sound the same but way cleaner.

    Every time I see a new video from Thomas he just dazzles me in a whole new way. His speed is incredible, but even more impressive is how smooth and relaxed he is while at his top speed and insanity. This video was one of the best Drumeo videos I've seen just on the exercises that he taught using rudiments. Totally inspiring. Would probably be much better

    • @NerismaStudios
      @NerismaStudios 9 років тому +6

      TYFLOL Disagree, BUT LaBrie loved Thomas's interpretation of the songs.
      Marco Minnemann was the best overall, but there's been interviews since that shows that Marco did it really for the sake of playing with Dream Theater (and his friend Jordan Rudess primarily), and going in, everyone knew that Marco was doing this for kicks and giggles (in fact, Mangini had the thing wrapped from the beginning: only reason why there was a seven-drummer audition AND a reality-tv-show type video series was because Roadrunner Records tried to get the thing to air on VH1 or something. Because reality television, you know? Mangini also was, besides Marco and Peter Wildoer, the only one who learned the songs note-for-note, but also, Mangini was the only one who was willing to make DT full time (because any drummer who joined DT, DT was their #1).
      And Thomas Lang certainly has an amazing skill set, but I always use him as an example of what I don't want to become on drums: unmusical. I want to be hired to do gigs and few clinics, not rely on clinics for my livelihood.
      This doesn't degrade from the fact that he is an extremely hard worker. Say he did become DT's new drummer. He's work his ass off. And a solid work ethic does take people VERY far.

      Matt Elbé You couldn't have said that any better. Totally agree.

    • @NerismaStudios
      @NerismaStudios 9 років тому +4

      Matt Elbé Oh trust me... I think Mangini has definitely fit in with them more than anyone else could, but for more reasons than his individual playing style: his humility probably played a HUGE role. And what Mangini can do, others cannot do NOW, but it's all a matter of muscle memory and practice. I do have his Grid DVD, and I do reference it from time to time, but honestly, my favorite drummer for the past five years has been Jojo Mayer. The guy is the only drummer I can think of that can play a drum solo that would interest everyone: not just drummers.
      Out of all seven drummers who auditioned, Virgil Donati is my favorite. But Virgil is too... improvisational for Dream Theater. And that isn't a knock on either one of them, but I think Virgil would have been unhappy if he became the drummer for DT, as would have Marco. Derek Roddy did it because his wife basically forced him to after he got the call (Roddy's main focus now is his snake ranch, where he has $170K-$200K wrapped up in animals), Priester basically flubbed his audition (sad too: he is an amazing drummer), and as for Peter Wildoer, I think it would have been more difficult than would be worth it to get the Swedish drummer to be part of an American band.
      But the members of DT were set on Mangini from the beginning. I can see why (and for reasons a lot of people don't think of), but I do think if I were in the position and I had to choose between Lang and Mangini, it would be a very tough call...
      I can tell you what it is that Mangini lacks in his playing, and it may sound incredibly strange given the style of music, but there's a sort of "swing" and "emotion" that Mangini does lack. Mangini's playing is a result of over-analysis to a point where his playing is the most sterile and "clean" of any human today... which seems great, but it isn't. the slight imperfections in human-made music is what attracts us to it more. Perfectly pitched and quantized music is unappealing because it lacks the human touch, which is one of slight imperfection. I'm not saying that pursuing perfection is bad. I'm saying that 4-way coordination is a dangerous road to go down if you don't have a true, explicit purpose as to why you're doing such, and I think Mangini's was too broad...

    • @alencore
      @alencore 9 років тому +1

      +Michael Scott ....Totally agree! I thought Neil was stiff but when Mangini played Tom Sawyer oh my I though I was listening to a robot who can lead on either right or left. He's is like drawing the perfect line without a ruler guiding him...it's that stiff! So Neil actually plays it better, the human slight imperfection in his drumming is still what makes it perfect for my ears to that's why I really prefer jazz drummers now and the grooves of Jojo Mayer appeals really greatly as well.
