7 Years later and still the best Drum lesson ever .
So much information packed into such a short ammount of time, its mind blowing
8 years and counting xD
The best thing about Thomas Lang is he isn't arrogant. He loves drums and he loves showing people how to play and how he got to where he is now! Absolute legend! If I ever get a chance to meet this guy I'll die happy haha
That's a common trend you notice, musicians who are actually worth their salt are very humble and down to earth people.
@@VaingStuff like Neil Peart
@@VaingStuff Uuuuuuuuuóoloóoooóótóoóoóotth9tootttóóottoooooooooóttiyyttttoooooooooooooo
Above everything else about Thomas Lang; I love his enthusiasm, he reminds me a little of Jim Chapin and Dom Famularo. What a wonderful resource he is for all musicians.
I have gotten to meet him a few times.
He is EXACTLY as you think.
He’s very understated and personable.
For most drummers, this one video represents a lifetime of practice material.
This lesson should never be taken down from youtube. We must protect it at all cost
"Same goes for the feet of course."
-Thomas Lang's future headstone engraving
kskslslslsoooao He's immortal..
...and lefthand lead
Perfect T-shirt right there!
LOL. Thomas Lange and Virgil Donnati have taken Mouzon, Cobham and Colaiuta to a new level, I love the attitude of these guys, even though for my taste they're not always the most musical.
LOL
THIS GUY! For 10 minutes, he delivered more information, technique, exercises and phrasing than any other instructor \ guest at Drumeo.
Thomass you are an inspiration!
True
i came for the future to say that Gavin harrison made one video for Drumeo. (not saying bad about Thomas, of course not)
Yes ...agreed . 100%
Martin Kirilov he's the best , bro
This dude is GOOOOd...
I’m just gonna throw it out there and say he’s probably the best drummer ever. I’ve never seen anybody be so masterful at so many different genres and techniques. Phenomenal.
Virgil Donati is next level
Steve Smith tho
You are on point with his knowledge and abilities with what seems to be every genre possible. It is truly unbelievable.
Thomas Haake is way better
@@jmike2039 well, tomas haake is a great drummer no doubt and I really love meshuggah... but thomas lang was playing tripplets and hertas with his feet and even polyrhythms when haake had not even joined meshuggah. Go watch el estepario siberiano react to thomas lang. He'll teach you.
Nevertheless, the best drummer is always the one that can provide best, what is needed.
Some musicians just click together and can deliver stuff that even better technically instrumentalist's can't think of. It is also about feel and imagination...
The best Puma commercial ever.
The longest one by far!
Great🔥🔥❤️
@@chicaobatera1484 puma
Why haven't I tried Puma yet?
Already bought. :)
I like the speed of the explanations. Very concise and easy to understand, nothing unnecessarily drawn out
Ben Pham Exactly. No offense to many great drummers, but I feel like when they explain something, they tend to just go over the same thing again and again, losing the point of question completely. Explanations need to be concise.
10:10 "It's very simple, and then just go a bit faster"
He's Austrian.
rofl
I know ,clear and concise ,some guys are superfluous.
Thomas is blowing Jarred's mind.
Dudes face is - 😦
This is how Thomas rolls, hahaha.
Thomas lang is a living testament to the limitless of human potential and creativity.
You know that feeling, when you want to stop eating and sleeping and only practice drums 24/7... because there is soooo much to learn! DAMMIT!
Yes but, if one does not eat and sleep one cannot play properly ,hahaha.
Anything he can do with his hands, he can do with his feet. ANYTHING. his control is unreal. great lesson guys
Sometimes i didn't even pay attention to the lesson itself, i'm just hypnotized of how good that snare sounds, he should do a video on how he tunes that thing!
i second that
Maybe more than anything it's just the quality of the DW drums, which are some amazing product. I'm not saying anything wrong about Yamaha, Pearl, Sonor, Gretch, and Tama.
Yes...
Some of the higher-end drums out there are difficult to get a BAD sound out of. And he has it tuned fairly high, with a good amount of snare response. Pretty much the perfect recipe.
noise gate, compressor, equalizer
Jared has these speechless moments in this interview. Indicating just how good Lang is. The terminator of the drum world.
I am here from the future to show you puny humans how drums can be played in many years from now…. Or something
That's Druminator.
Even his foot techniques is better than my hand.......
:D
Lol
Then get back to the drawing board ,I am .
Go practice.
@@markdemell3717 😩
This man is a very gifted drummer and he is in a class all by himself.
I listen for 10 minutes and recognized 20 different song bits.
I’ve been playing for 17 years, went to school for drum set performance, and this man has forgotten more about music than I will ever know. Pleasure to listen and learn!
15:25 Danny Carey uses that bass drum concept on The Grudge. Everyone seems to think he's just speeding up. Real drummers always use a concept of math and time.
Thomas Lang: "And of course you can do the same with your feet"
Everyone else: "No Thomas, it's just you"
Also Thomas: "I think in drum"
I have been looking at tap dancing videos ,they have actually helped me with my mediocre foot work.I have leap frogged . My foot work is 50 percent better after Thomas's exercises and the tap dancing videos.
😂😂😂
@@markdemell3717 that's actually how Steve Gadd developed a lot of foot techniques. He's a tap dancer too
He's a monster of perfection . I love how he goes from slow to hyper speed in a split second. And then says it's easy. Ha. Love this guy's drumming and his explanations of everything
Whenever i feel like im getting pretty good I go watch a Thomas Lang video.......... keeps u humble! :-D
This dude is a Beast of techniques
I've seen so many drummers, but Lang is something I have never seen before. What a skill, and he has an independence that you don't find easily elsewhere

Wow!!!! Thank you so much for having Thomas Lang on here!!! He is absolutely my favorite drummer because he works so hard. He loves the drums and it shows in his playing. He is very dedicated and I love his sincerity and I would love to take lessons from him. His drum technique and grip made me happy because that is exactly the grip I learned to use and mastered from my own drum professor. I think Thomas Lang is truly a drumming genius of our day and I would love to have more of his lessons on here!!! I wish I could go to boot camp and play Canada, Canada, Canada... :) ...I love his ideas and he inspires everyone to play better than they believe is possible. I was so excited to get this video and was thrilled that you invited Thomas Lang to give us lessons! ;) I really do hope you invite him back soon! Thank you Thomas Lang...So fantastic ;) !!!!!
Kimberly Ballard Thank you Kimberley!
Stick Trix Thank you Thomas! :) You are totally inspiring! I would love to learn how you mastered playing with such ease of control & speed.
Thanks for the reply!!!! God bless!
One of my fav drummers, too. What's not to like? as he does everything oh so relaxed, and, oh so good...

Drumeo Resolution by Yumaflex is very great song ! Thank you very much for this clinic/vidéo .
ludovic leflon Yes, the dots "wear off" now. Cheaper craftsmanship.
Not just the adhesive that is too weak ? It looks like it's coming off from the underneath surface.
at 16 minutes when hes talking about joe morellos double stroke technique everyone needs to pay attention to that. this is thee best way to play double strokes. after i learned to play them right it completely changed the way i approached drums.
No finger strokes at all, right? Only the wrist?
Altai Zeinalov yeah pretty much. youll feel it once you get them up to speed.
ok, thanks)
Do you play doubles above 200 bpm without using fingers ? at some higher tempos like 230 and above even with fingers it's almost impossible for me unless I use Buzz rolls or press rolls, is it normal or am I doing it the wrong way?
Ouarem Cracken you still use the fingers. but its more of a stroke and then a squeeze. the fingers give the rebound stroke more power. the first stroke is just dropping the stick and the second is done mostly with the wrist.
just practice getting more power out of the second stroke instead of the first stroke and youll eventually figure out how it should feel. so its r R l L instead of R r L l. when its up to speed theyll sound the same but way cleaner.
great lesson to quit drumming....LOL Lang is so kick ass

This guy has four brains.....incredible.
This is the most informative drum technique video on the internet. I'm a professional drum teacher, and this improved my teaching more than anything else I've ever watched.
+Sittin' On Top Of The World that's very cool, Thomas is a master at this instrument, a true musician with incredible creativity and skill
This is a master lesson: thank you Drumeo and a thousand thanks to Mr. Lang for summarizing what it's really needed to achieve for the mastery of this instrument.
Thomas is magic, he demonstarted everything from slow to light speed and the secret behind....great great great lesson!
Watching this again for like the 10th time!!
The most complete drummer out there, physically he can play everything, great stick control.
Brilliant sentence “I never had a friends” so now you know if you Facebook profile is 300+ how much time did you wasted already haha. No one will be that successful without a massive time engagement and sacrifices… No one! I like when people say “he got the talent” ;) His talent is nothing else than thousands of hours behind the kit, that’s it! One of the best drumeo videos ever!

Thomas Lang was born on Krypton .

Best comment I've heard in awhile. LOL. Great observation!
HaHa, that's funny man. Love it!
I remember buying my first drum lessons DVD from him. I wanted to get better but it was so beyond my level I just watched it purely for entertainment over and over. What a machine!
after 6 years i'm still watching over and over again this terminator drummer
This is the best lesson I've ever seen.
I love how Thomas breaks down his awesomeness into simpler, bite-sized goals.
Thank you!
This is the most jam packed comprehensive set of lessons ever! I’m so happy to have found this to practice with.
Scholar of the world of drumming without pretense...true teacher, author, and clinician. First saw him at Modern drummer festival in Montclair NJ. I got to see him and Virgil Donati under one roof that day!
too many teachers focus on going back to the basics to have us relearn drumming. Thomas just gives us clever exercises and says here" do this over and over and your body will do it." he recognizes that there are no tricks. it's just muscles. train them
It's amazing how precise and fast he is playing while still applying dynamics and remaining true to the rudiments. Also I love how hard he hits, you never loose his hits. Such gusto and power!
He is loose in the chop breakdown but his lead sheet interpretation is too similar to the figures in the lead he is there to support and deliver.. There are layers to comping solos, group sections, melodies etc. Thomas here, does not seem to have the same Aesthetic ( or quality) in comping and lead sheet interpretation, that he has in his techniques like chops and strength.
Drumeo: Thomas, how much incredible do you want to show off in this lesson?
Thomas: yes
I am so curious to hear Thomas rock out to some thing simple like Back in Black .
Mark Demell As much as I’d like to hear Steve Vai playing songs like Back in Black
@@markdemell3717 ua-cam.com/video/UNShJ-J3AO8/v-deo.html this is pretty simple

Just watched this again for the second time. This video is amazing! Thomas is on another level! Best drummer ever!
Thomas: There is a lot of action actually happening below the belt
This is too cool! After watching this video, I was able to do everything he showed within 5 minutes at 1/20th the speed of course
Jarod! There is a new Drum God in my book! Mr. Thomas Lang, that was most impressive drum playing I’ve ever seen! Hive five on this one Jarod!
My favorite Drumeo lesson so far! Mr Lang even smiled at the host while he played. So much joy.
Jareds jaw-droppin look is priceless. Just like knocked out boxer whaa happened
It took me three days to watch this whole lesson, it's just great and very useable! Thanks for bringing this great drummer!
Just love this guy! On top of being a complete machine behind the drums, he has the haunting talent of looking like he's waiting for water to boil, while playing 32nd notes with his feet and 9/16 triplets with both his hands all over the kit.
I love how willing he is to give us all this great info.
Jared looks like he has just seen god :)
This is because he has
Nah that would be Mike the master Mangini you're referring to 🤯
@@j.d.7208 meh, Mike Mangini is boring as heck.

Just put heart eyes and we're good
it´s really great to see you from Colombia, love your lesson *DRUMEO*
The often open-mouthed look on Jared's face says it all. I could not imagine sitting next to Lang for this lesson. It's like the universe of drumming knowledge crammed in through your earhole. Wow.
I've never seen so much material packed into 80 minutes. Thank you for sharing this Thomas Lang and Jared Falk.
Every time I see a new video from Thomas he just dazzles me in a whole new way. His speed is incredible, but even more impressive is how smooth and relaxed he is while at his top speed and insanity. This video was one of the best Drumeo videos I've seen just on the exercises that he taught using rudiments. Totally inspiring. Now I'm going to go cry in my drum studio while I attempt some of this stuff. LOL
I"m a drummer, I enjoy watching more advanced and controlled drummers, Thomas Lang's drumming is great, clean, crisp, dynamics and techniques are great, Very throrough, Great teacher ppl can learn so much from this guy, Thx for posting!
Flash backs from 20 years of drum lessons! Always thank your drum instructors!
The best default teacher of drum techniques. Him explaining his hand speed + stick control, foot ostenatos + multi pedal orchestrations simultaneously. That could possibly haunt you for life or until you gain that level of independance your own damn self.
this guy is so cool. very humble
Seriously, if I were to practice everything that he taught in this video, I would no longer have any other time for other drum lessons on youtube AT ALL. SO. MUCH. HARD. WORK. Conciously leading with the left hand is already an insane thing to do on the drums, not to mention the speed of playing?! Seriously!!!
Lol
By far, this is the best drum lesson I've ever seen. Thanks Drumeo and Thomas Lang!
This is absolute my favorite one of these drum videos.
Very inspiring free lesson.
OMG plz get Buddy Rich, he is soo good!!!
Come on guys, Drumeo is doing great, just be grateful for what they're giving you. No need to pester endlessly for more.
he's dead dude
+leeroy larsen he is not saying get buddy rich he's complaining about others asking Drumeo to get insane drummers on these lessons when they are already working quite hard to get these drummers let alone guys with the talent of buddy rich

No he's back.
Any way, did they expect to exhume and revive the man?

That would have to be the nicest sounding snare drum I've ever heard in my life
Does anyone know what model it is?

He's simply amazing! Its surprising to see that he's not working as hard as you would think such simple rudiments but so well placed , such discipline!
That snare! Damn the whole kit sounds good. I can always count on Drumeo and of course TL to create masterpieces.
I absolutely love this lesson by Thomas! I keep watching it over and over! Packed with great ideas! Love it! Keep'm coming:-)

It's so precise and precious. ✊🏽
What gets me is how good his damn footwork is and independence, jesus christ lol
Decades of disciplined focus practicing techniques not just playing stuff you can already perform.... continuous progressive learning no stagnation
I was rooting for this guy to be the next drummer for dream theater! hahaha Imagine what would it be if he is drummer :D
Would probably be much better
TYFLOL Disagree, BUT LaBrie loved Thomas's interpretation of the songs.
Marco Minnemann was the best overall, but there's been interviews since that shows that Marco did it really for the sake of playing with Dream Theater (and his friend Jordan Rudess primarily), and going in, everyone knew that Marco was doing this for kicks and giggles (in fact, Mangini had the thing wrapped from the beginning: only reason why there was a seven-drummer audition AND a reality-tv-show type video series was because Roadrunner Records tried to get the thing to air on VH1 or something. Because reality television, you know? Mangini also was, besides Marco and Peter Wildoer, the only one who learned the songs note-for-note, but also, Mangini was the only one who was willing to make DT full time (because any drummer who joined DT, DT was their #1).
And Thomas Lang certainly has an amazing skill set, but I always use him as an example of what I don't want to become on drums: unmusical. I want to be hired to do gigs and few clinics, not rely on clinics for my livelihood.
This doesn't degrade from the fact that he is an extremely hard worker. Say he did become DT's new drummer. He's work his ass off. And a solid work ethic does take people VERY far.
Matt Elbé You couldn't have said that any better. Totally agree.
Matt Elbé Oh trust me... I think Mangini has definitely fit in with them more than anyone else could, but for more reasons than his individual playing style: his humility probably played a HUGE role. And what Mangini can do, others cannot do NOW, but it's all a matter of muscle memory and practice. I do have his Grid DVD, and I do reference it from time to time, but honestly, my favorite drummer for the past five years has been Jojo Mayer. The guy is the only drummer I can think of that can play a drum solo that would interest everyone: not just drummers.
Out of all seven drummers who auditioned, Virgil Donati is my favorite. But Virgil is too... improvisational for Dream Theater. And that isn't a knock on either one of them, but I think Virgil would have been unhappy if he became the drummer for DT, as would have Marco. Derek Roddy did it because his wife basically forced him to after he got the call (Roddy's main focus now is his snake ranch, where he has $170K-$200K wrapped up in animals), Priester basically flubbed his audition (sad too: he is an amazing drummer), and as for Peter Wildoer, I think it would have been more difficult than would be worth it to get the Swedish drummer to be part of an American band.
But the members of DT were set on Mangini from the beginning. I can see why (and for reasons a lot of people don't think of), but I do think if I were in the position and I had to choose between Lang and Mangini, it would be a very tough call...
I can tell you what it is that Mangini lacks in his playing, and it may sound incredibly strange given the style of music, but there's a sort of "swing" and "emotion" that Mangini does lack. Mangini's playing is a result of over-analysis to a point where his playing is the most sterile and "clean" of any human today... which seems great, but it isn't. the slight imperfections in human-made music is what attracts us to it more. Perfectly pitched and quantized music is unappealing because it lacks the human touch, which is one of slight imperfection. I'm not saying that pursuing perfection is bad. I'm saying that 4-way coordination is a dangerous road to go down if you don't have a true, explicit purpose as to why you're doing such, and I think Mangini's was too broad...
+Michael Scott ....Totally agree! I thought Neil was stiff but when Mangini played Tom Sawyer oh my I though I was listening to a robot who can lead on either right or left. He's is like drawing the perfect line without a ruler guiding him...it's that stiff! So Neil actually plays it better, the human slight imperfection in his drumming is still what makes it perfect for my ears to that's why I really prefer jazz drummers now and the grooves of Jojo Mayer appeals really greatly as well.
The perfect drummer he is! Thanks to all the works you did and do!!!
This is one of the best practical Rudiments lessons I have seen on Drumeo thus far. I've learned so much from watching Thomas Lang. I will be referring back to this video multiple times
