    So i have watched The Freedom Writers many times and i love it very much. I can relate to all of the students in one fashion or another. I wish i would have had a high school teacher like Ms. Gruwell.
    Seriously, what she did with her students and how she got them to see the potential that they had was just amazing. There needs to be more teachers like her.

    All that feeling in her story telling, all that heart wrenching pain, all of those tears she is holding back while telling her story. I don't respond well to sentimentalization. If you are a professional in education and want to maximize the potential of good teaching. Continuing to teach is important. I am impressed by the positive outcomes with her students during her short career as a teacher.

    Reminds me of my father. He was the principal of a grade school. On the first day of school, he wanted students to write what they'd done in the summer. He came to my mother's class. She told him they couldn't do that. "Sure they can! He gave them a pep talk and one girl brought him her paper. "Honey, what does this say?" "I don't know; I can't read." (She was in the first grade.)

I recognize that she lent 4 years of her lives to help kids on our schools, created a foundation and is now teaching others how to do it. In the process she even lost her marriage. That is how much she wanted to help.

    You will reach some students but the students who are disillusioned aren't wrong. Minimum wage in the UK in it's double dipping recession is a pitiful 6pounds. To prepare a student for a workforce that pays into a very meager wage while advertising and the general consumer culture that surrounds them teachers a young adult, even a older adult to want more if they are to have self worth.

    • @tracer4322
      @tracer4322 3 роки тому +2

      I don't think she was saying those actions were justified, she was saying their anger was justified. Rodney King didn't deserve to be brutalized by police and they had a right to be angry at that injustice. She never said that they had a right to hurt other people though. In fact, the entire point was that she was trying to get them to channel their anger and pain into writing instead of violence so that they could have a chance at a better future.

    But Hearing Erin speak is like watching a hallmark card cry. Full of syrupy sentiment but no substance. And there must be something good in her philosophy as if she was able to tell us how it was achieved then perhaps other teachers and students could benefit from it.... Maybe we have to bye her books. Maybe I will. But having taught for 12 years now and achieving great results in schools in the London UK and regional areas.
