Exactly. Plus the backup vocals are spot on. All the guys in the band can sing so their harmonies are incredible. There is a video of them warming up backstage out there. The band is singing a cappella and they sound incredible.
Correct! All this stuff we just thought was normal is now not only classic it’s also unparalleled. Nobody could make music this great now if they tried.
757 WELL SAID . I love RnR but I took it for granted it was always great. Did not appreciate it til I started watching reactors. I listen 2 SP&JOURNEY almost every day and sometimes so do my neighbors. Thank you for the reaction PLEASE more SP&JOURNEY especially live. 😊
@@ProfessorMystery77 Years ago I took my son to the music store to get him his first guitar. Ben, the salesman, was playing classic riffs to demo, throwing it in and out of drop D and suddenly he stopped, looked at my son and said, "Unfortunately for you, all the great music has already been done". Had to laugh, but that was a Kodak moment.
Steve Perry is one of the GOATS. Journey was built to be a live band. Their songs translate so well to packed arenas. They helped to define the sound of rock in the 80’s. This song is anthemic. 🔥🔥
What I find so impressive is how good a lot the singers were from an era before autotune and heavy backing track being used. Nowadays you have the studio version being played at 70% in the background and heavy autotune on the mic so the singer is basically just harmonizing with the backing track.
They didn't even have earpieces, so they had to rely on what they could hear no matter the acoustics or crowd noise. The tour before this one they didn't have wireless mics either so Steve had to pull the cord around with him.
I would definitely recommend "Mother, Father" from this same show. Steve absolutely kills vocally during that song. I would also recommend reacting to another song in Journey's catalog. It is much later in their career and is actually the last song Steve did as the lead singer (before leaving the band). A song called "When you love a woman". A beautiful heartfelt ballad. Some of Steve's solo work you need to check out too; "Strung Out," "Oh Sherry," and my personal favorite, "I Stand Alone." 😃
Like others have already said, I think most Journey songs sound even better live. The musicianship with every member is top notch, and then you have the vocal talents of Steve Perry, who easily is a poster child for the "Will never be another like him" conversation. The "Mother, Father" song is definitely a must listen. Steve Perry has often said its the hardest song to sing, yet he kills it in the live performance from this same Houston concert. Thanks to both of you for checking this one out, and I can't wait for your next reaction. Keep on rocking!!
Journey was my whole high school experience. You couldn’t go anywhere outside the buildings without hearing them blasting from someone’s car. They will always be 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Steve Perry is a vocal beast this whole concert was fire! Journey was one of the few groups that sounded better live in my opinion. Check out Mother Father live in Houston
Steve Perry’s vocals are so great, that people often overlook the guitar playing of Neal Schon. I was lucky enough to live 30 miles down the peninsula from 1968-77, when San Francisco was a rock and roll Mecca. I went to high school with Neal and I remember when he walked up to my friends and I one day and said (paraphrasing) "I was up at Carlos's last night and showed him a few things". Not long after, he dropped out of school and joined Santana on their African tour. Around that time, he turned down a request from Eric Clapton to join Derek and the Dominoes after committing to Santana.
Hey Phil & Sam, Happy Friday!! I actually went to this concert(Htown). Just like your videos, it was 🔥. Journey was huge in the 80s, and this tour for the Escape album added to their commercial success. Have a great weekend, everyone! ✌️ ☮️ 🇺🇸🎶 🎵❤
Was at the 1981 Journey concert in Pittsburgh Pa!! Great Reaction ❤️ Mother, Father is a must. The song puts Steve's vocals on another level plus great guitar work from Neil and a little piano solo at the end.🔥🔥
It was INCREDIBLE!! I was at that show; still have the ticket stub and shirt (if only it still fit); I have very fond memories of this show! This entire show is available on DVD or download; it's worth it
There's really no other way to describe, being at Journey's concerts back in the day, except a COMPLETE HONOR & PRIVILEGE!!❤☺️🎉 Journey WAS my youth, & what a FUN RIDE IT WAS!!! This tour was amazing! (Of course, they ALL were, its Steve Perry). We were truly BLESSED, with the BEST music, growing up in the 70's & 80's! Always a party, ALWAYS A GOOD TIME!! 🎉🙃 We were only 5 rows from the stage. 🥵😏 Thanks for the walk down memory lane!
He doesn't have an ear bud in.. this is true music.. Journey was amazing.. better live than in studio.. Steve Perry is called .. The Voice.. for a reason. So blessed to have seen them .. I think 3 times .. with Steve still in the band..
Don't Stop Believein was recently voted the greatest rock song of all time and it's well deserved. Steve Perry was nicknamed "The Voice" for a reason and it's good to see younger generations see and appreciate not only Steve's greatness but that of other all time greats. No matter how good music may be today and the future, there's nothing that can or will ever rival the raw talent and passion of the 70s and 80s.
That whole Houston concert was crazy good. It was touched up a bit for the CD, of course. But other than that,. that was a raw performance. Simply amazing.
Osaka, 1980, Wheel in the Sky. There's a part in the song that I always thought was an instrument. Man! I couldn't have been more wrong! It was just Steve, vocalizing, for the longest note I've ever heard. Phenomenal!
I was there. 3rd row. Jaw on the ground. Unbefrickinleavable. Changed my life forever. Have played music the rest of my life. Steve Perry best voice of all time in rock n roll history. Neal Schon best rock guitarist imho...Steve Smith great drummer. Jonathan Cain pianist and great composer. Listen to Escape Live!! Shoot...listen to EVERY Journey song with Steve Perry.
Graduated high school in 81. Saw Journey live in Worcester, Massachusetts 83 with Bryan Adams opening, amazing show. Check out combination Lights & Stay Awhile - Live in Japan 1980. Steve Perry's voice sounds amazing especially recorded in 1980.
I get teary-eyed when I watch this because it's just 5 guys on a stage, filling the hearts of a whole stadium full of people. Can that happen today, with perfection like this?
Just stumbled on this reaction and big fan of Journey and sadly never got to see them live with the original crew. However, I got to see them live in 2014 with the new singer and he is doing a fantastic job as a replacement! Bassman looked over 70 years old at the stage and still vibing, it was amazing
Steve has one of the best most powerful yet smooth voices of all time. Steve made Journey as great as they could ever be. This is a classic performance that is immortal. I can listen to this all day and it will never get old. One of the greatest songs ever made. Elvis was t entertainer and voice this world will ever see. Steve is up there with the he Greatest voices like Elvis, Freddie Mercury, Phil Collins and M.J. From eras when there was REAL TALENT!!!!!!!
wow memories. i was at this concert. Journey had never been one of my top bands but they really put on a good concert. made me pay more attention to them.
I was born, raised and still live outside of Houston. I was a senior in High School when this concert took place 😊. I grew up with the best music for sure!!!!!
You two are the first ones I think of when I think of reactions....love this song too! Guys all concerts were FIRE like this all the way into the 90s....nothing like today! Older the better! Steve is the voice!
Next… Mother, Father from the same concert! 🔥 even more amazing vocals by Perry! Watch the one with keyboard solo at the end. This is a song that all the other vocalists that came after struggled to do. When they did do it live post-Perry, they had to use vocal tracks from the original for the highest parts.
I saw that Tour, three times but, in Seattle @ The Seattle Center Coliseum. I was 14 & Rocking was was all I wanted to do ! I grew up just blocks from the Seattle Center ( Space Needle ) & saw Many bands you guys are discovering ! Mahalo for that, it’s great fun to see you two dig these great bands & fun for me to go back ! 😎😘✌️✊🙌🤙

My older sisters fave band! Shes seen them over 20 times and snuck out the house as an 8th or 9th grader to go to this show here in Houston. She won't go see Journey without Steve Perry.
No auto tune, no BS. Just pure unadulterated talent. He sounded just as good live as he did in the studio, maybe better.
Exactly. Plus the backup vocals are spot on. All the guys in the band can sing so their harmonies are incredible. There is a video of them warming up backstage out there. The band is singing a cappella and they sound incredible.
Better..their performances never wavered but they seem to draw energy from the crowd adding extra emotion.
No dancers, no crazy costumes, no special effects, just pure talent, great voice, great musicians!
💯
That’s not entirely fair. Steve Perry was doing a bit of dancing. 😄
lmao only crazy costume was Steve 😃😃😃😃😃
@@markvanderstelt8999 Jon was wearing one too.
@@0okamino It wasn't a full blown dance routine like a lot of them do these days. What Steve Perry is doing is not dancing at all.
For 30 or 40 years we just thought incredible music was normal. Only looking back can you see it.

He is THE VOICE for a reason. I was there!!! My first concert ever and I've been a Perry fan ever since!
That night all five guys were at the TOP of their game!
Better believe it!
Cookin" is the word
Imagine maintaining that vocal energy throughout the entire concert, night after night. It's a testament to his talent and his stamina.
Perfect pitch, wide vocal and dynamic range, powerful inflection and breath control. It's why they call him The Voice!
Now do "Mother Father" from the same concert. You'll be blown away by his vocals and there is a nice Piano solo at the end.
Definitely!

Mother/Father will be next!
Yes it's live, You would be AMAZED at how many bands from the 70s and 80s sound JUST like their albums. It was a GREAT time to be alive
Steve Perry has a INCREDIBLE voice! 💪🏼
As my mom used to say when she heard a great male singer...." what a set of pipes on that guy!"
If this song comes on and the ppl around you don't start singing leave immediately. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.
Absolutely. And that " iconic" riff is like a " call." We all know it. Lol. Stay gen x, don't give in.
what if they don't know the lyrics but like the song? Is it also a "negativity"?

Journey is best LIVE! They were the hardest working/touring band and it shows in their performances.
The whole concert is available on UA-cam, and it's awesome.
This performance proves why Steve Perry could possibly be the best rock vocalist
Possibly? Billboard had a poll a few months ago and he won with 67% of the votes.

Better live than studio version! This song make to feel dreaming! I LOVE IT!
Steve Perry had such a strong unique voice! Very recognizable! Such a talent! ❤💋❤
