A trick I learned if I am not motivated is to work with my internal voice. The voice in my mind. That appears to train the muscle memory without actually having to speak. And when I do speak, that voice comes out

I've been slowly and unconsciously improving my voice over time even though I didn't get "serious" about it until last year. Before I even realized I was transgender I was pitching up my voice. It's a process, but it improves over time.
Heck, I even overheard a coworker say they hated my voice at one point but I kept trying. Now, I can go online to chat and nobody misgenders me anymore.

This is something that really helped me during my journy with voice alteration. This tip is about managing the stakes during practice. If you blow up the importance of the task up too much, when you start to struggle or fail, it becomes too much to bear which generates negative feedback loops of discouragement. If you shrink the stakes internally, then when you start to struggle or fail (which has to happen to grow), you can continue to chug along and grow. Managing the stakes during gender affirming voice modification is super important as dysphoria can play all sorts of unfair games on how we value things.

I 100% agree, and this is of course a great video, but it's very difficult to reduce the stakes when there is so much dysphoria around one's voice. Personally this causes the exact issues you described. I suppose all any of us can do is try to take a healthier approach.

I think my main problem is more the fact that I am overly paranoid of being caught in the act. (As I live with a group of nine strangers who can hear pretty much everything that goes on in my room.) As a result, I feel like I have to find an isolated place so that I can practice and as a result, I am often put off from it...

Finally started trying to train my voice. Here's what I did:
Just treat it like any other voice. I do a lot of voices, both for fun and because career (Because *voice acting is fucking lit*).
I also found out that I was *SO GODDAMN PARANOID*
I locked my door, triple checked life360 to see where everyone was, etc... And it's not even because my family isn't supportive, cause they are, I guess for a long time I just found it... embarrassing? Which is odd because none of my other voices are "embarrassing" to me.

I recommend the book Atomic Habits, it focuses on building small processes into your daily life instead of being outcome/goal-driven. Part of it is fitting the process into your existing routines, part of it is identity-based, i.e. “I am a musician, part of being a musician is practicing every day.” I’ve definitely found in music that practice for even 10 mins every day is far better than a marathon session whenever I can find the motivation. Consistency instead of quantity, process instead of goals.

I think most comments below neatly summarize my feelings on voice training and motivation - while it's something I want to do and I feel like I need to do it's hard to start because of outside factors being a major hindrance. Living with family, roommates or strangers can easily put you off, especially if you're not out to them. Same goes for people struggling with mental illness. For me, it's both my parents and my mental health that make voice training feel like a struggle. Despite all that I am glad to have found your channel as it has given me a direction as well as courage and motivation to follow that said direction. I am incredibly thankful to you for the things you do!

The way I practice voice is I just sort of use my voice sometimes when Im alone, like under the shower or when doing stuff around the house. It's not always feminisation (though usually it is), but sometimes i just do whatever because I love using my voice and experimenting with it. I might sing, I might hum, I might try to do an animal sound.. Though it did take a while for me to feel comfortable enough to do that without shame 😅

Trans therapist here - when any of my clients express interest in voice training, I always offer my support by providing resources and insight into the process. And I also stress that voice training is NOT mandatory to transition but should serve their needs, and that it's absolutely fine to begin training for brief moments while they work on building up motivation and confidence.

I agree with the message of this 🥰 I do wish you were a little kinder in your wording. Things like “have to” or “this leads to this and it’s unhealthy” do help make people aware, but kinda left me with a sense of guilt. I am “trying” all these affirmations and practices, and I still feel emotionally drained and anxious. Maybe I am just a sensitive bean, and thought more of the message could be put on the “emotional toll” and not the routine. I did like your part about voice training for 30 sec, 1 min, 2 min, any amount of time you can handle. 💜

my voice is naturally really deep and i have this CONSTANT vocal fry i cant get rid of. it doesnt upset me at all, i kind of like having it, but its been making it difficult to make my voice sound feminine. im just not sure if im doing my practice right. ive got a lot of control over my voice and i can do the exercises well but the fem voices are always sooo raspy. again i dont mind the rasp i just hope it means im not doing something wrong

    I think I've made it a small thing that I can do casually, at least sometimes, but now it can be a week and I just remember I haven't done it. Like I'll forget it instead because there is nothing making me do it^^;

The music you use for your new intro/outro is fun by the way, i like it a lot :) Is it part of a track that has either been released and I have somehow missed, or unreleased?

My problem is that I have a decently femme voice that I use at work all the time, and now I worry that if I start changing it my co-workers will notice and judge. I'm also not out at work, some people I'm closer with know I'm trans but not everyone does. I do want to make improvements though because I definitely have room to improve.

Hey there Z, this might be a little unrelated to this video but I was wondering what your voice visualizer that you used in the HEARING VOCAL RESONANCE video, as I wanted to try to track my own training and when I play around, and I just have to say thank you so very much for all of lessions, this really is making a difference for me and giving me so much hope as I work on my voice.

So I start my first lessons with my Speech Therapist, everything is fine he is a cool bean, but i struggle rly hard with the big question in my head "can I make it ?" Cause I think it's hard for me to think/feel about how my voice would/should be sound feminine, so it's literally don't get in my head, i was rly angry few days ago that i was not able to practice a simple task cause i don't remember the voice i should make (how it sounds)
He told me that i should try to make something like a rly overacting female Voice or Mickey mouse...and it was just U tone nothing more just to get a feeling what kind of muscles i activate when I do this...i get it somehow I think but it's was so annoying to get there...what i also think sometimes is that i think I practice not enough so the last time I did it was like idk 4 days ago idk rly maybe less but it was just 2 times or 3
But I'm thankful even with high expectations that i stop when my vocal cords say they are done like the last thing i should try is to look how i can move my apple up and down but after few minutes i rly feel something that it could be something like a arching so i stop

Your videos are amazing, and I've been training a bit with it, lately, so first of all, thank you so so so much for it! Secondly, I was wondering : is it ok to train in English even though I'll speak French in majority? I know different languages already have different placements, so does it matter, or can I practice your techniques and use it whenever? Thanks again for what you do!

I wish I could practice more. But what stops me the most is fear of getting caught by my parents (who are firm opposers of LGBTQIA+). It's a long, sad, and complicated story that I won't go into. But it's still no reason to give up! I try to practice every day, even if only a little. I look for alone moments to practice. If they catch me, I tell them I'm having a silly conversation with a friend. And throughout the day I practice "Big Dog Little Dog" exercises, or raising/lowering my larynx with no sounds. Or I Google/UA-cam voice feminization in a private browser. I also write down tips and quotes on Google Drive. And just like you said, I also don't set unrealistic goals or expectations.
The result? Well, the circumstances in my life are still far from ideal... but that's no reason to give up. I keep practicing and studying when I can. And I'm actually happier than some would expect.
