  • Let's continue our exploration into effortless voicing with a morning vocal warm up!
    Do this each morning before you get your day started. It's especially good for getting rid of that morning creak in the voice, or for those who are battling allergies.
    If you wanna do more of this and dive deeper, that's what we do over in the Undead Voice Lab.

    I am a 66 year old bigender person, fresh out of the box, :))) with a fantastic support system from both family and friends. Tried the exercises with the video and found results immediately. I read a few of the comments and so I gather the waiting list is now closed. Are there any options available for a senior bigender working online since I live on an island off the west coast of Canada? :)))

    100% Helped, and I really felt that when you mentioned one side might be tighter than the other. Barely felt anything on my left side, did it three times over completely to try to feel something thinking I was doing it wrong. Then on the right side, there was drastic drastic tightness compared to almost feeling nothing on the left.

    • @undeadvoicelab
      @undeadvoicelab  2 роки тому +23

      Yes! Mine is always the left side that's tighter. If you look straight on in a mirror, and see that your head tilts slightly to one side, that will tell you which side is tighter! (ex: my head tilts to the left, chin to the right, so my left side is tighter)

    Just tried the stretches and my voice instantly sounds softer and clearer, not even doing any sort of voice work right now, just doing it with my current natural voice (because well it's the easiest to spot a difference in :D).
    Also (just watched 5~ish vids of you back to back so maybe it was in this one, or it was in another :D) when you said that whispering is actually hurting your voice in a sense, I was like "well fck me I've been whispering to myself almost everyday for 20 years :)"(I'm the kind of person that whispers their thoughts when alone ^^)

    • @tonyandonuts
      @tonyandonuts 2 роки тому +16

      I'm not sure if the exercises in the video help deepen your voice but i know an exercise that definitely will! All you have to do is: 1. Hum at your normal pitch. 2. Slowly go at a higher pitch, whilst simultaneously moving/stretching your neck upward. Go as high as you comfortably can, both pitch-wise and neck-wise, you should feel your neck strain. 3. Go from this higher pitch to your lowest comfortable pitch, whilst simultaneously moving your neck all the way down to your chest. 4. Go from lower pitch to regular pitch to higher pitch, still stretching your neck. Rinse and repeat around 3 times and you should hear/feel the results! ((((Upon typing this all out it's basically the same exercise, except for the focus on the lower pitch rather than a higher one))))

      This is just a foundational warm up for your voice! like stretching before working out at the gym. It won’t change the gender of your voice.
      To change the gender perception of your voice you’ll need specific exercises for things like resonance and weight and pitch. If you’d like to check out the voice transition programs I have take the quiz to see which one would work best for you:

    Can lip trills done wrong increase throat pain? They are SUPER difficult for me to do, but i think i finally found a technique at one point that involved that holding the cheeks thing and then it's like i had to focus on the lips in the center or something.
    I managed to get it consistently but i had to put in a bunch of effort/airflow to get it started and then i did the pitch up/down stuff and then went into my voice like normal but had to stop within a few minutes because now it's like i have a slightly sharp pain in my throat, almost like cold feeling?
    Whereas the past few days I've been having discomort but we're talking after having used my voice to speak pretty continuously for like an hour or two. And even then it was almost not even pain, and faded pretty quickly.
    This is definitely pain and I'm gonna give my voice a rest and see how long it takes to go away...
    Its like i turned my talking discomofort back into the full on pain i was having a month or so ago...

      the problem is probably that you're using too much air and compensating for that by constricting the throat and straining your voice. You should try using less air and relaxing your throat more. (Using too much air and constricting the throat is just about the most common mistake in a buch of voice stuff, from learning how to roll an r to singing falsetto) Probably the most important part of voice training is not to strain or stress your voice but to keep it pretty relaxed. I will also say, if you have no success with lip trills, you could just substitute it with humming or sustaining an m sound. Using lip trilling is a SOVTE (semi-occluded vocal track exercise), which helps cushion the vocal folds and make some exercises easier by partially blocking air flow, and humming basically does the same thing. Though lip trilling is generally better if you can do it, humming should work just fine too. (Another great SOVTE is to put a straw in a cup of water and sing through it, which not only works as a SOVTE, but gives you feedback on the amount of air you're using - if you blow too hard, you spray water everywhere) Hope this helps!

    What's the importance of going down in pitch as I'm trilling if my goal is to feminize my voice?

    • @undeadvoicelab
      @undeadvoicelab  2 роки тому +10

      Even if your goal is to increase the UPPER part of your pitch range, when we speak we go both up and down in intonation. So even if you're speaking a higher part of your range, you're going to need to control both the muscles that raise and lower the pitch, or else you'll be super smooth going up in pitch, and start to break when you come down. Don't think of trills as training the lower part of your range, but more so the CONTROL you need to maintain your ideal sound. Make sense?

      Everyone has variety and range in their voice. it's not uncommon to have an unnatural sound or something a little "off" if you've not yet trained with a professional. Feedback and guidance is KEY to transitioning your voice and finding a sound that's natural and effortless.

    This is great, but now I'm wondering why these exercises are so useful/important? Like why do lip trills help you warm up?

    • @undeadvoicelab
      @undeadvoicelab  2 роки тому +3

      Great question. Specifically the lip trill is a type of Semi Occluded Vocal Tract Exercise (SOVTE). When you do a lip trill it creates a back pressure of air that makes it easier for you to voice. A lip trill without sound isn’t helpful, a lip trill with pitch movement is! It breaks up any mucous on your vocal folds, and allows you to stretch and warm them up safely! If you want to learn more google SOVTEs!

    Hi Nicole! I am currently in the process of trying to explore my gender (I currently identify as nonbinary, but I'm almost certain that I am actually a woman), and have a question regarding vocal transition: do you lose your low voice as you transition? • @Mouse-bk5rd
      @Mouse-bk5rd 3 місяці тому

      the voice is very much a "use it or lose it" sort of thing, so whereas some trans girls do eventually lose the ability to easily go back to their old voice if they go long enough without using it, as long as you keep practicing singing in your lower range you should be just fine

    • @undeadvoicelab

      The voice is controlled by a set of muscles. Just like any muscle, it benefits from a warm up! Think about it like a marathon runner stretching before running, or warming up your muscles before a workout. The voice is the same. It works MUCH better if the muscles are warmed up before you start practicing using the voice in a different/new way.

If you have the bandwidth, doing it both in the morning and before bed is ideal!
