No, it's not just you 😉 I was hooked on this album back in '87. The lyricism & messages still resonate today. I remember hearing the line " this is the 51st state of America" in Heartlands and feeling shocked lol And here we are... 2023
it's frikkin' brilliant, and also one of the best short-form comedy films of all time. performances and directing are on point, and the gag at the end is chef's kiss.
I have known this song for over 30 years I think...today I found out the girl singing is Neneh Cherry. Now I know I can't understand how I failed to recognise that voice for all that time.
Not probably, Infected is the best album ever. Political commentary, biting satire, superb production, wonderful arrangement, prophetic vision. Should be compulsory listening for all 16/17 year olds. Mr Johnson please come back with more of the same.
Kai - soul mining comes a very close second to me, I think the production and sequencing is truly epic on Infected and that coupled with the broader subject matter and diversity means that IMHO it just beats Soul mining to 2nd place. Both are light years ahead of 99.9% of anything else released in the decade. Hope they tour again, I was at RAH last year and can’t wait to see them again, this time fully synthed so that they can do more off infected and soul mining. Keep the faith.
The best thing I used loved about The The is that , The quality of a recording album is the same quality as a LIVE performance. Very little bands can do that.
The Infected album is in my Top 5 albums ever it blew me away as a 17 year old i'd never heard anything like it and still haven't today, Matts a genius !
@@jonhunter8737 Ye i liked Prefab Sprout....When love breaks down is one of my fave ballads from the 80s Paddy was a brilliant song writer they did lots of great stuff,
what a great band with the best name ever. got into the the's music when I heard soul mining when it first was first released. did anyone else watch the infected album film on channel 4 before the actual album had even been released ? also , I can remember , in the early 80's in London seeing posters & graffiti for " the the day" what was it & did it happen?
Soul Mining is my favorite The The album followed closely by Infected. Matt's lyrics are up there with the best writing skills in the business. The twilight hour is a legendary track & surely The The was one of the very best band's to come out of the 80's. Thanks Matt for curing my depression with your music 🎵🎶.
The ONLY band whose T-Shirt I would ever wear. My favourite album of all time. Even called my first band ‘Out of the Blue’ as a homage- truly stunning album.
When I first heard that song back long ago I was electrified... and I thought about a sentence from one of the Oasis brothers.... he said: "We humans makes the best fucking music in the universe." ... He IS RIGHT... and I still LOVE THAT SONG and I will ever do.
The The song is still fantastic after all that quite long time....another gr8 song o' my youth. NOW i recognize even more how timeless many of those still are....but i knew already how gr8 they've been back in those days of course.
The Grandkids are just old enough to chat shit about music. I just beckon them to my headphones and put this on. It’s all you need. Sorry you never heard the Eighties kids……🤣
This is a masterpiece of music by the genius Matt Johnson and Neneh Cherry :)
Omg need him now decades ahead of his time.
Is it just me or is this one of the greatest songs AND music video's ever?
I'm suprised how they were able to get away with filming that bit in the inspection pit! Then again, it was the 80's...
No, it's not just you 😉 I was hooked on this album back in '87. The lyricism & messages still resonate today. I remember hearing the line " this is the 51st state of America" in Heartlands and feeling shocked lol

No doubt about that!
I still wonder if you can lie underneath a passing Tube train in one of those pits on the London Underground, but I wouldsn't want to try it!

Me too!
Guilty as charged!! How on earth could I’ve missed that??
I’ve loved this song and the album since I’ve bought it back in -86.
Me as well, though this song came out nearly two years before Buffalo Stance became the huge hit it was.
26 years on and this album is still one of the best! Matt Johnson truly is a genius. Good music never goes out of style!
Absolutely spot on comment and took 6 years to reply
Now 36 years on and still the best. Where does time go!
@@tofera back to where it came from I suspect
Endlessly fascinating.
@@briansilver6196 look now
One of the best albums ever. Not one bad song
One of the most underrated bands ever!
But why? Don't get it myself
Indeed...
Not by me! It's more a Solo artist, with session musicians innit?
Yes true, but not when playing live. Check out the live vids with Johnny Marr.
He made it more of a band thing for Mind Bomb and Dusk and the tours he did for those albums.
Matt Johnson was and is way ahead of the time. His music and lyrics are such an inspiring force over all those years.
Not probably, Infected is the best album ever. Political commentary, biting satire, superb production, wonderful arrangement, prophetic vision. Should be compulsory listening for all 16/17 year olds. Mr Johnson please come back with more of the same.
Probably Soul Mining is even better. Just sayin...

Am 17, has been my compulsory listening these past few months. :)
I was 16 when it came out and it changed the way I listened to music......Genius
Tell your friends
Infected is one of the masterpieces of XX century... it's with 'Peggy Suicide' from Julian Cope one of the most under rated albuns of all time...
Peggy suicide wow im off on another trip back.
omg. The memories. Every single song on this album was stunning.
I agree !
Totally
'ive followed that bead of sweat to the small of your back from the nape of your neck' ......a lyric you never forget
30 years since i heard this album and that line is still with me "Lighted it up, with every drag upon my cigarette". Gives me chills
imagination:will make a man of you...she lit a cigarette, both hands behind her back...
john french &,Thats it..man youve got it down.great sounds great.
He could see that sweat from that angle because he was taking her from behind.
I've been on thousands of slow trains to dawn, none of them with Neneh Cherry unfortunately.
none of them with (beneath?) Matt Johnson unfortunately...
Lol
Does pausing the nipple shots when wanking on a train count?
she´s not on the train, she´s under the train. find the mistake.
This fucking band is quality mate
Dear God. What great writing and production. Still an absolute pleasure to listen to.
Class lasts.
Dear God God God
The best thing I used loved about The The is that , The quality of a recording album is the same quality as a LIVE performance. Very little bands can do that.
one of those magnificent tracks which like a jazz band is brassy...kicks you in the head ...leaves you dragging on behind and makes you want more
I remember as a teen.watching the tube ..a The The special...life changing!!!!!
The Infected album is in my Top 5 albums ever it blew me away as a 17 year old i'd never heard anything like it and still haven't today, Matts a genius !
Hi I recommend an indie song called 'where I come from' by Robert Nix
Defo mate!! All The The, All Prefab Sprout. Early REM. Amazing tunes that are solid to this day.
@@jonhunter8737 Ye i liked Prefab Sprout....When love breaks down is one of my fave ballads from the 80s Paddy was a brilliant song writer they did lots of great stuff,
When music was still great!
Quite possibly the best album ever.
.
Soul Mining is my fave but this is up there...
The most brutally honest love song of all time. . . Talk about laying it on the line !!! . . . Pure genius. . .
Love Nenah's expression when the little train arrives, she thinking "Is that it?" Seen that expression many times myself.
i keep watching the buffalo stance video over and over again. this girl has a million expressions she can rapid fire at you. what an amazing beauty.

I have the VHS! It's getting a bit grainy now and very sadly - it will never come out on DVD!
It was MTV😎
I can't believe this has only 155.000 and some views! This is brilliant!
What an under rated group they were. Brilliant.
The greatness of this artist. I just can't
I can remember getting this album on vinyl in the 80s I still have it Haven't connected with it in a long time, you can be sure I will be brilliant
This album and Mind Bomb still sound so good.
Soul Mining and Dusk too.

Classic track with the lovely Neneh Cherry. Fantastic song!
This is actually very clever pop music. Very clever indeed...
This masterpiece is in my personal lifetime Top-10. Can't stop listening - since '86!
So far ahead of times...and so more relevant now..
Few people realize how stars like Nenah Cherry, Sinead O'Connor got their start working with Mat Johson...
Still listening to this in the back end of 2021... fantastic track.
The The is one of the best Matt Johnson´s the world ever had. Loved it then, love it now.
Still one of my favourite songs of all time.
Mine too.
What an amazing video. .. The the are surely the most under rated groups of all time when you consider their quality
Neneh Cherry's breakthrough... I STILL FUCKIN' LOVE #THETHE ❤
Neneh's sporting some serious de luxe hairy armpits goin' on in this vid.
Absolutely fantastic tune ….. memories 😊🙏Matt has amazing vocals as does Neneh x
