Absolutely. And the album cover itself is also a work of art. One of the best albums of the eighties and most people have never heard of it. Max Headroom introduced me to it 😊
It was one of my first VHS video's after buying my first VCR! And I still have it! Sadly it's very worn, I messaged for ages about getting it released on DVD but some of the original master tapes were lost after production companies (There were a few involved in the project) folded. On the label a review reads 'After watching it, everyone seemed stunned!' And why not? In 'Twilight of a champion' Matt places a loaded, cocked gun in his mouth! What a guy!
I first heard this tune way back in 1987 on a Sunday during a TV ad break on Channel 4. Totally fantastic song and video. Been off of UA-cam for far too long.
Brilliant album, cleverly composed, great production and playing, amazing lyrics and videos that follow the whole album are brilliant, what can I say Matt (The The) is a really flawless author.
Random fact: This song gets a mention in The Jazz Butcher songbook "Miracles & Wonder" by Philip Snow and Pat Fish (aka The Jazz Butcher). Page 103 to be exact! If anyone's interested! Pat said he was thinking of this song, and Reagan's bombing of Tripoli, when writing lyrics to his beautiful song "Angels". Rip Pat, you have introduced me to a lot of music/songs (such as this) that I wasn't previously aware of...musical inspiration from beyond the grave.
Watched Ch 4 TV in the UK who premiered the whole Infected Album Video. To say I was completely blown away that Thursday evening (I think they did a lot of Video stuff for Indie Bands on that night as well as other Progs like The Tube/Whatever you didn't get with Keith Allen). They were a very good source of upcoming indie bands
I watched it too on Ch4 and blown away, i am sure Ch4 put it on twice. I bought the vhs tape of the lp but it didnt play properly, didnt have a replacement copy tho 😅
I remember this brilliantly-prescient track never got the promotion or radio play it deserved as its planned release coincided with the US bombing of Libya in 1986, and his record company (CBS) got cold feet & pulled it. Despite it being *exactly* the message the public needed to hear right then.

Amazing song , I remember reading a review on the single it said it's a much more powerful version of Paul Hardcastle's 19 and should be a big hit , The whole Infected album is something else what a masterpiece ,
Infectd and Soul mining are two of the best albums ever made and this is one of the best songs on those albums. Having said that, every song on both albums are amazing.
This album is outstanding!!! Find me a poor track! I love Prefab Sprout, you would select three or four tracks off their album, and go, yeah, I'll buy!! There is NO weak track on this album!!!! An amazing piece of music/social commentary, just Brilliant.
@@julliard I think it stands up really well. It's one of 5 or 6 albums on a playlist or in the cd draw at any point, along with Steve McQueen by Prefab Sprout, Woodface by Crowded House, Talking Heads Remain in Light/Stop Making Sense/Speaking in Tongues, Thomas Dolby Golden Age of Wireless/Aliens Ate my Buick. I dip in and out of modern stuff, but I have a brother in the industry and he knows a fake song/protools/autotune rip off when he hears it!! Back to analogue!!!!
I heard this just before I went out to the Gulf of Oman for the second time serving in the Royal Navy, made me think about just what the funk I was doing!!.
The video's of the whole album were shown on Channel 4 in the UK. I taped it on VHS, but after my term at university, somebody had taped over it.😢Sold the vinyl copy I bought at the time and bought the CD, and most of the videos are online so it's worked out OK in the end. It's still relevant today. "Should I cry like a baby, or die like a man, when all the planet's little wars start joining hands."
It was the 1990s computer game (political simulator) called Conflict Middle East that introduced me to this song. It was the heavy 80s feel to the song and music video that kept me coming back!
Saw them live in Toronto at the old Masonic Temple on Younge Street Shortly after the Album Infected was released. Way ahead of there time one of my favourite bands of all time
The chorus' lyrics for this song would appear as the first screen of the Amiga videogame _Conflict: The Middle East Political Simulator_ (1990). I used to wonder what it meant, back in the 90s, when me and my dad still used to play it, and there was no internet yet to appease our curiosity (we're from Italy). Fast forward 25-ish years, 10 minutes ago I found a video (this one: ua-cam.com/video/vqKQnYUeDC4/v-deo.html ) which had me realize it must be a quotation... Google and this video made the rest.
The 12” variant is the definitive version that they always used to play on JJJ in Australia. If you haven’t heard it, do yourself a favor and check it out!
The infected album is an absolute piece of art. Such a shame people don’t get it. Stands up today x
Yes !!!! A perfect diamond !
Damn right.
Absolutely. And the album cover itself is also a work of art. One of the best albums of the eighties and most people have never heard of it. Max Headroom introduced me to it 😊
Amazing album x 🙏huge talent!
I got it. Still listen to it. Genius.
If I’d known I’d be listening to this as a 16 year old in the 80’s and again now as a 51 year old in 2024 while it has not aged a single moment!!!!
Here in 2024. What a shame this song is still relevant.
I feel that way about both the Infected and Mind Bomb albums. D:
Many people are surprised about the chaos and division in the world, but some of us have always seen it.
This song is still as brilliant, timeless, and prescient as the say it was released 37 years ago😞
This is your captain calling... with an urgent warning...
Such a great and under rated song. Stood the test of time and still relevant today.
Even MJ cannot have known just how relevant it would become!
YEP ......
I must be odd because this is my favourite Thethe song. The first time I heard it I just went, "Wowwww...."
Your not odd at all. This is one of their many classics.
Fucking classic…. One of the best bands in the world 😎😎😎😎
Great band and that was such a great time to be around. I was living in Boston and every band in the world came through town.
Needs about 100 million more views. Honestly a bit staggered that this absolute masterpiece isn't a lot more appreciated.
You're not wrong!!!
It is a f..n Masterpiece!!
They don't make them like this any more !
@Carlos You really want Matt Johnson to not be more successful just so that you can feel superior? That's more than a bit weird.
Listen mostly to12 inch album version but yesssssss genius
It should be.
Eerie and still as hard hitting today as in 1986
I was 21 when this came out. My only regret in life was not buying the VHS when it was $15.00 .The entire album was flawless and so unique as a story.
It was one of my first VHS video's after buying my first VCR! And I still have it! Sadly it's very worn, I messaged for ages about getting it released on DVD but some of the original master tapes were lost after production companies (There were a few involved in the project) folded. In 2023 this sounds so Prophetic
This is another group/band that I would not have heard of if not for MyMichaelC
I don't what mymichaelc is. But my brother introduced me to the the in the 80's. Still great.
I guess I should really just call him MichaelC now, drop the My part. I finally, over it....him
Actually, looks like I never really knew him after all.
Brilliant and timeless. All the changes and life stages gone through and I've never stopped coming back to it for well over 30 yrs.
Just as relevant today as it was back then with the fighting in Yemen and Palestine
O I'm 55 never thought I would see this on UA-cam. Have the LP and Cassette, cd..et..freaking cetera!
Thank YOU!!!! Damn, I'm lagging! Love it!
This song is just amazing!
I used to listen to The The all the time during my Uni days
and this song just stirs me right up!
My dad showed me this song and god bless you for this dad
Still a masterpiece.
It's been Way too long! So good to have it back in here! Outstanding track and so relevant still.
Absolutely. They banned it when it was released as a single, unfortunately.
Just remembered it was released the same year as Top Gun.
I first heard this tune way back in 1987 on a Sunday during a TV ad break on Channel 4. Totally fantastic song and video. Been off of UA-cam for far too long.
Help me Lord!
I can't stop playing this song!
It's tribal ecstasy!!
Just excellent - one of the best bands - and undervalued.
@Richard Coutts I think they have a healthy fanbase
Made even better by the backing vocals from the awesome neneh cherry.
Anna Domino on backing vocals in this song.
Great song very visceral sound. Gets under your skin. Great clip.
Brilliant album, cleverly composed, great production and playing, amazing lyrics and videos that follow the whole album are brilliant, what can I say Matt (The The) is a really flawless author.

Those mid-through-late 80s when Channel 4 was the scourge of the blue rinse establishment.
Checks out..
I was gifted the Infected video on VHS for one of my birthdays. It was actually astonishing.
I watched it too on Ch4 and blown away, i am sure Ch4 put it on twice. I bought the vhs tape of the lp but it didnt play properly, didnt have a replacement copy tho 😅
Unbelievable ! Another THE THE CLASSIC !

Oh what a heaven--what a hell!! Matt Johnson brought me here. x
more relevant than ever. such a great song on an amazing album.
I can hear Slow Train to Dawn start up in my head when this song ends :)
Still cuts thru !!!
Love this song and the band
Sonically amazing album, and employing some of the real talents of the day.
During a tory choked 80s Britain, this was one of the only life rafts...

Wow, totally forgot about this song! Haven't heard in...probably decades! Awesome song, fun to be catching up on The The.
Seen them at the Albert hall long drive from Liverpool but I would have walked to see how good they were
Here we are again
Still fresh after all these years. Thank you Matt
Phenomenal then and now. Could have been released today. Still listening at age 71.

Very topical still after all these years.
Lovin it
🔴 Still as *arresting* today as it was back then!
Easily one of the best albums ever, just briliant. If you're into hi-fi too... on a good well set up system it's reference material.
An exquisite elicitor of empathy for both Arabia and the West in response

Dude this video used to trip me out. I remember this on MTV a to z every summer.
80s and 90s when MTV played music videos.
J'adore ❤❤
Capolavoro.
Change the world this never stopps
I always wanted to watch this video and it is finally available in Mexico nowww!!! AAAAA
I got this on 12" vinyl when it came out. It's all coming back. So evocative.
Heaven sent, and hell bent.
Most appropriate track of the day.

So happy I got to see you Matt in Brixton back in the day. Continue to be a huge fan.
Brilliant!
Amazing!
Hi I recommend a song and video called 'Where I Come From' By Robert Nix
Обалденно❤❤❤❤
I remember Paula Yates/Geldof interviewing Matt.

Visionary
