and the original recording from 1982 sound like the guitar part could have been created and played by johnny marr, so no wonder mind bomb sounded like a band at the height of their imperial phase.
Glad I'm not the only one!! I heard this album when I was like 6 years old, and it captivated me... now I'm 40, a professional musician, and it still captivates me!
My friends and l SO loved this song when it came out… We were young and it was mixed up with early Cure, The Cocteau Twins’’ first album, smoking weed, post-teen crushes, crazy nights… Years later, we caught up with each other, home from different states, and had a New Years Eve Party where we danced to this - we danced out all of our regrets, very wasted, laughing, and looking forward to our new futures…
I think "Uncertain Smile" is a beautiful and haunting song about unrequited love. The lyrics are incredibly evocative, and the music is both atmospheric and moving. The song's title is a perfect description of the feeling of being in love with someone who doesn't love you back. It’s a a atmospheric song who is clearly heartbroken, but nobody still can't help but smile when he thinks of the person he loves. This song is a reminder that even in the midst of heartbreak, there is still beauty to be found. It is a beautiful and haunting song that is sure to stay with you long after you hear it.
There was an advertisement on Portuguese TV in the 80's asking youngsters to join the police force. The start of this advertisement showed a robber stealing a car at the sound of uncertain smile. Every time I hear this song I'm thrown back to this age. What a tune!
Saw The The at Portsmouth Guildhall on this tour, the loudest gig, and one of the best, I have ever experienced. My hearing wasn't right for several days after.
I heard this song one time when Apple Customer service had me on a long hold.... I was bumping along to the song but when I heard the Piano solo I ran to find another device so I could Shazam the song... that was 8 years ago, my device says I've listened to the song 3000+ times since! lol ahhh the the
When I play this song, folks ask me who it is and I say "The, The", and they respond "The Who"? I say not the "Who". "The, The". I generally give up. You had to of lived through the 80's to fully appreciate this band!
Soul mining is a hidden classic album.. Everyone knows the Joshua tree, what's the story, rumours,Dare....But ask people have they heard of the The..Matt Johnson is an underrated genius 😊
Saw this concert in May 1990 at Ancienne Belgique, Brussels. Right in the middle of exam preparations in the last year of high school. Had bought the Mind Bomb CD and it'd blown me away. The concert was fantastic. Being a drummer, The The's drummer David Palmer made a big impression: great playing on the album as well as live.
Back in the late 80's they were ...... (not underground)... but didn't get the airplay off Radio 1 they deserved . Because it's proper music from proper musicians !!! . GREAT TRACK ..... all these years on 🙂 .
I'm teaching myself, as a complete beginner, to play piano and how to play by ear just so I can play that piano solo, 2 years in.... I might get it.... one day😊
Doing same on bass, got this done a while back, but you don't need shit but the will to do it and if you do your own stuff and remember it, then if its just for fun, your an eric clapton❤️👍
Great song. This is my desert island song. I could listen to the version with piano days on end. The The coming to Montreal in fall same time I’m going on European trip. If my wife wouldn’t divorce me i would cancel my trip to get to see Matt 1 more time in my life.
As someone who plans to go to whitby festival this winter as the first gig ive ever gone to on my own at 43 theres nothing wrong with missing anything, its just how the shit falls👍
I remember when i learned about this band from an M&M’s commercial “this is the day i was mesmerized by it, theres very few good bands ive found via commercials.
It's a masterpiece. Matt and Marr simply rule. They're unbeatable. Also thought these basslines would kill me one day but fortunately I'm still around... 😀
The the.Had me a few listens in.was in Oddessy hse ch ch N.Z.86.Theyre wasnt z great choice of tapes.to play on Night Duty. But thankfully Ĥave always Had there 1st n 2nd L.Ps.+3rd Mindbomb.too.'Beaten Gen'...Like J.Division.its always great .! This is nice - very mellow and comforting - that piano dude is rather good - the jangling guitar sound is sweet - The band had a good run the 80s with those brilliant albums Soul Mining - Infected and Mind Bomb
Jeeeezus how good is this in 2024.
It is good! Saw this lineup at the California Theater in San Diego in 88 or 89.
Really good!
Yesssssssssss
not bad at all 😻
The most underated band of the past century; they deserve more recognition.
nobody underrates The The.
Underrated???
@@Pat_omb "underrated" is the most overrated word in music criticism. 🤪
Also, at times, one of the most boring.
@@Bolshybwoy AGREED! Great band. Underrated is the laziest and thirstiest comment on YT.
One of the best bands ever. I still listen to their music all of the time.
Johnny Marr's guitar sound is absolutely beautiful 😊

@@anthonyb.corrales4470yes
@@anthonyb.corrales4470 Sure is Johnny FUCKING Marr!!!
My absolute favourite, album of all time! Soul mining is unbelievable, beautiful, even after all these years!!
There are two of us! But “Dusk” is no joke either! 😀
Absolutely but the best album of all time is Disintegration from The Cure and the best band ever!
Long live Robert James Smith
🤣😅😅😅
I'm 61 and agree!

I will never tire of that amazing keyboard solo. It just begs to be played at max. volume !!
Yeah that Jools Holland solo!!! 🙂
Jools' solo on the album version is another level. fan-tas-tic!
Simply one of the best songs ever recorded. DC Collard with a very faithful reproduction of the Jools Holland sound.
Oh yes You cant not hear jools on Those trks i beleive he plays again w/-The the.on 'LATER W/-....its fkin great.chk it out.'

This is one of the songs of my life... New Wave forever! 🖤
Wow, I haven't heard the term New Wave in 40 years. Brings back memories. Thanks for reminding me of that awesome genre!
Absolutely YESSSS ❤
Reminds me of my French - Yugoslavian girlfriend who pronounced the band as " Da Da " She couldn't make the th sound. God I miss her and the 80's.

Well said :)
Matt Johnson is so, so underrated.
Not a bad choon too
Agreed, such a beautiful and haunting song and takes me back to the early 80’s❤
Nicely stoned here in southern California! Just blazin'! Had the The album in 1984. I also love, 'this is the day!"
Me too! Except I'm not in S Cali! Bought the album for the same 2 songs, though, but I've still got mine 😉 🤭
To think Johnny Marr nearly was in The The as a member before the Smiths having met Matt Johnson before the Smiths formed.

Dude's hands literally blurred when he was jamming the high notes on the piano. No one has ever been able to recreate that to this day...
Saw this tour - fantastic!

Love love love everything about this song!!!
His voice is very similar in style and delivery to that of James Grant lead vocal/singer of the Scottish band Love and Money
