    yes, I agree, why make a video of how to clean a felt hat when you are not really telling us how to clean one since your solution is a secret. Also why not show us of a beige hat so that we can see if you are really getting it clean.

    Neutrogena Original Formula facial bar soap is what the Smithsonian uses to clean their wool artifacts. I've been using it on my wool sweaters and it works great. If I ever get a spot on one of my wool felt hats that's what I'll be using. Normally a brushing with a soft hat brush should get the dirt off sufficiently though.

    The spray solution is probably 90% isopropyl alcohol, since that's the only solution that would dry quick enough without damaging the fibers....And, now you know! :-)

    That really helps us DIY ers and those who cannot come into your shop to have you clean the hat.

    Ok here is what I did to clean my favorite western felt hat....this hat is my favorite hat but due to the stains, it just did not look as nice to wear and thought of giving it away and buying another. So with nothing to loss, I took my hat sponge, wet and rubbed and rubbed, till I got tired and angry and used the sink sprayer to spray on warmer water all over the brim on both sides...finally, I placed it on the kitchen counter and actually drenched it with more warm water while rubbing the Sh*&^T out of it. Thinking this hat was gone for good, to my surprise, the spots and oil stains came off. Lastly, I steamed, brushed, shaped it and let dry with the crown on counter. First few hours, I check to ensure the shape was holding up. To my surprise, the hat I lost hope for, was now spot clean and looking really nice and no color fading. This hat is a 5X 15 years old black western felt hat made by Wrangler. The best thing is that this hat is a much better quality hat then present day 5X hats. I know because I bought another of its type made by MHT and the quality can not be compared...so there you go....let me know if this helps...

      yep! Your post brought back memories of my Papa doing that but I also remembered he used corn starch to help lift the red Arizona clay dust out and return the " store bought" stiffness to it. I did that just now with my Bison felt Resistol. Thanks for responding with this! My Papa has been gone since 1981 so he ain't around to ask and My memory ain't the best anymore. THIS post of yours was far more useful than the video.

    you know anything about scout water repellant spray? is it useful for hats?

    • @trevino37
      @trevino37 7 років тому

      I used some of that once but not required if you have a 5X or more felt hat. I love when my hat gets drenched in the rain...it has opened the brim wider with less curve upwards and looks great....the scout cleaner is chemicals that will stain your hat more then clean it....just use water, a hat sponge and don't be afraid to soak and rub it hard to remove spots...you can't damage a good hat. These videos never say that simply because as long as you are scared to do it, they keep a potential customer...

    As bad as this sounds, I can't help but wonder how this guy would hold up twenty years ago, or even thirty in the America of the 90's and 80's. I'm not trying to hate, but I miss the days when men were encouraged and raised to be real masculine men. This guy could be straight, but it's regrettably hard to tell. Men of America, at what point did we become ashamed to be MEN?

    "Don't use chemicals when cleaning."
    Proceeds to use chemicals...
    Everything is a chemical. I wouldn't want plenty of natural ingredients near my hat, and I'm sure there are artificial ingredients that are harmless.

    Sorry, Eric... but you're getting thumbs-down on this video, because you're losing a lot of us on your "secret sauce" moment. The video is useless if we don't know what WE should use. And your not understanding that destroys your credibility. It's even more disconcerting that you've left this flawed video here for 5 years. You honestly should have pulled it long ago, and re-shot it with some substitute for your "secret sauce".
