One little suggestion … ball up a hand towel and put it under the hat while it’s drying. Helps keep the shape and also absorbs some of the water.
That's what I do as well. It works like a charm. When you remove the towel you can feel all of the moisture it extracted from the hat.

If it is an unstructured hat, wear it while it is still damp so it forms to your head.

It’s people like you that make this world a better place. I’m glad I found your video. I followed it step by step. My hat had some bad sweat stains but I didn’t pre-treat with a stain remover. My hat is air-drying now. We’ll see how it turns out! Thank you again for the great video!

I've tried SHAMPOO, DAWN DISH SOAP, OXY CLEAN LIQUID.
With a TOOTH BRUSH, SCRUB BRUSH, MY FINGERS.
With COLD, WARM and HOT WATER !
why use the dishwasher and not like... a regular clothes washer

Tried this on my favorite hat. I wear it every time I go to culinary class, so the chef has a heavy emphasis on safety and sanitation. Gotta say this video worked out. My hat’s now free of stains for the moment. Thx

Thanks for the video Andrea. I wear a hat to work 12+ hours and I usually just throw them in the washing machine; however, we all know how well that works out. I'm going to try your method today.

I go the simple route, half cup of lukewarm water, couple drops dawn dish soap and the soft yellow side of a dish scrub (not the rough green side). Scrub lightly in circular motion. I make sure not to soak the hat with water, just enough to damp it a bit and get the stains out. Air dry over night, never under the sun and thats that. 👌🏼
Just did that and it fucking sucks. You clearly don't have any white hats cause mine has a white patch and when I tried scrubbing lightly in a circular motion on the sweat it just spread dark all around. Now my patch has a huge dark portion.

@@chrisalertaalpha4291 Caps are expensive , but no solution to cleaning them and maintaining the shape, even steaming them over a kettle doesnt work!

How effective is this method? I tried just soaking it all free clear but that didn’t get the stains out. Might need to invest in oxiclean and try again
Idk if this has been said but I’m a Walmart temporary remodel employee, this is very helpful, I am waiting for my hat and vest to dry, I believe this is the best way to do it tho, starting my weekend washing my work uniform 😂😂 but you have been realy helpful I just got it done and it seems like it’s helped at least 90% of what I need so thank you so much❤️ the cleaning toothbrush seemed to be the best so far!! I

I did this method, 5-10 times until the water wasn’t brown anymore… worked great gotta love dawn dish soap & hot water.

You can also soak it in soap water for like an hour and then brush the stains. I would also recommend drying it in the sun instead of your home because next time you sweat in it it's gonna smell.

Thanks for this! I am definately going to be using this method. I did notice that sometimes the hat tag will tell you if it should be washed with warm or cold water. My White hat says "hand wash cold" so just be aware of that.

In the past I used large peach cans that fit the hat near perfect for drying.
Lately I use the large plastic Folgers coffee cans as a drying rack/form.
Won’t completely soaking the hat ruin the bill of the hat? I’ve been trying to do this but the bills keep getting warped . Any tips for that?

I've always worn company hats at work to keep my long hair restrained. Where I'm at now, I see a lot of customers, and there is a higher need to maintain a professional appearance. I've never had to wash a hat before, but I will give this a try.

My mom used to use a margarine container or small coffee can to help cap keep its shape while drying, depends on shape of cap /person's head. Just an 'old school' suggestion.
So you don’t recommend to wash the hat in the washing machine? Also, what do you do with a white hat? How do you clean them and what’s the best way to dry them up so that they can keep their shape? And is there anything you can do if you already washed the carpet in a washing machine and they got wrinkle is there anything you can do to bring it back?
What if the hats are 100% acrylic?
Biggest thing for me is a hat shrinking or losing its form.
For the form after you wash it blow a balloon inside the hat and it will keep the form 👍

Dawn is the best soap, fast orange smells good and feels nice but nothing gets grease off of things like dawn.
I have a Kimes hat, and it’s my favorite hat, it’s my nice hat and I’ve gotten it a little dirty, I will try this out
I'm usually not into wearing but since covid happened and I cant cut my hair as mutch I started wearing hats and I need to clean it

I also use a sauce pan to keep shape while drying on some hats.
Does this work well with grease and oil , I am a mechanic by trade so my hats get quite filthy lol

I got the same result by just throwing my caps in the washing machine and running it on a short 30°C hand wash program with a light amount of non-bleach laundry detergent. Of course before doing this make sure the brim of the cap is plastic and not cardboard as that could be a disaster.
Dawn dish soap is awesome also have used it to ean muzzleloader barrel and greasy hands

When drying stuff a towel in the cap to make the shape of it dry as if it was on your head
That's what I was thinking. My main concern is having the hat wrinkle up. Does drying it that way prevent wrinkling? Some of my favorite hats have been ruined that way, and I have some nice ones that I'd love to clean up, but haven't been willing to risk it
Before this video i used to wash my hats on the concrete truck, they used to come without stains but a little hard, now i do this they come perfect

I bought this protective cage thing that holds 1 hat to be throw in the dishwasher (I use my washing machine) and it worked okay but it got crazy one day and damaged the cage as well as the inside of my washing machine so I haven’t been able to wash my hats. My friend told me he cleans it with a brush like this video so I’ll have to try it. I have 20+ hats that need washing and I can’t do with washing 1 hat at a time.

Yeah, this will work best with monochromatic hats. Anything with Red, White and Blue such as my Buffalo Bills and NY Giants hats the colors bleed. Even in cold water.

I got this hat I love that got pretty gnarly. Gonna try this right away.
Ball up a towel and put it in the hat enough that it is not stretched. Helps with drying and keeps the shape.
My major problem is getting hair oils out of my hats. Even after soaking in Dawn and scrubbing the affected areas with a toothbrush, I get this waxy residue left over that just won't come off. You can't really spot treat as the entire bill and inner headband area is involved. I have yet to find a solution to this problem.

Hi liked your video very much.. One question.. How do you soften the sweat band area around the forehead because I keep having this problem with all my caps. Its very stiff and hurts when I wear my caps/hats.
i dry my hats with the underside, flipping the head band out facing the sun. it kills the organic matter that causes bad mildewy odor.
