  • Stetson cowboy hats are an iconic American accessory. The popular Skyline style will cost you $245, while other premium varieties can set you back $5,000. Over the years, famous figures like President Ronald Reagan and Beyonce have worn Stetsons, further solidifying the brand's image as the premier American cowboy hat. It's one of the few hat brands that have reached icon status. So what made Stetson so iconic? And is that why these hats are so expensive?

My grandfather had one of those hats. It was given to him when he was 17. He wore that hat until he died at 87. When you are out in the middle of the fields with your horse and blowing rain, or snow. You need a good hat to stay on your head. This is why quality is better than quantity.

Ephesians 6:10-18 says, Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; and your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints. The bible is no old book. You have to really let Christ open your eyes; to see the world in shambles. Many people say it's a religion to lock up people in chains, and say it's a rule book.. why? Because people hate hearing the truth, it hurts their flesh, it's hurts their pride, it's exposes on what things have they done..people love this world so much, s*x, money, power, women, supercars.. things of this world. Still trying to find something that can fill that emptiness in your heart. You can't find that in this world.. only in Christ, the bible is no chains, it's a chainbreaker. I've worn the thing every time I've left the house for nearly 24 years now, and it's still in one piece. So even though it shows it's age, I guess it's probably gonna out-last me.

I use to be a line-haul truck driver. In Alberta, Canada back then (the late 90s), 2X beaver cowboy Stetson could cost over 2k dollars to 5k dollars. I was in the State of Missouri at a truck stop. The truck stop had a cowboy hat store attached. I went in and found a 5X beaver hat. Guess how much they were asking for it. They were asking 50.00 dollars for the hat. Well, I thought I would be stupid to not buy it. When I walked up to the girl at the till, I asked her "Is this an error?" "What do you mean?" she asked. I replied "It says this hat is 50.00 dollars" "Yes that is the correct price" she stated Not being a stupid man, I shutup and paid her the 50.00 and walked out of the store, filled with joy.

I’d wager a guess, the choice was made based on practicality, availability, and iconography; the design overall is perfect for the frontier, where there’s little to no shelter the wide brim protects the wearers head from the sun, and since it was waterproof it could function as a makeshift bowl, the felt also provided insulation and warmth during the colder months.
Natural fibre clothing industries were at their peak during the time, making accessibility to the hats easy; combined that with the relatively low-cost at the time thanks to the robust fur trade from Canada, a soldier could easily fined a replacement when his Stetson had worn out.
Finally the hat was a symbol of the west even back then, with it’s strong look and being an item synonymous with the word ‘frontier’ it was easily identifiable and became the staple of the U.S cavalry since it was unique among the many units of the military.

During the Indians Wars, a 'fedora' or 'brimmed campaign hat' was an issue item but it isn't anymore and hasn't been since War Two.
Nowadays cav troopers [myself included] buy their own Stetson as a private purchase item. Nevertheless, it's as much a uniform item in a cav regiment as your fatigues are and it's an ass-whoopin' offense to mess with another trooper's brim. While there are several companies that produce a 'regulation' cavalry hat, but I personally spent the extra money for a Stetson. It remains a cherished memento of my service with the 11th 'Blackhorse' ACR.

Stetson used to do contract work for other companies. For instance, back in the 1970s, they made hats for Korb's Trading Post of California. I bought one of those in 1975 for $20.

They should’ve featured a Stetson hat called El AMO. It’s second to the diamante which is the $5,000 hat featured in this video. El AMO has a price tag of about $1,700 to $2000 depending on where you buy it. Its 500X beaver felt. It has a 10karat gold and silver buckle. It is a beautiful hat! I just picked mine up at boot jack. It took them to 8 months to make mine because they didn’t carry my size so they called up the Stetson company and they agreed to make it for me. It is custom and one of its kind. 🤠

My ball cap as flown off more than my stetson. If you tilt your head a little into the wind, the large brim around it catches the wind actually helping secure it to your head. The one I have is meant to get dirty as far as I'm concerned. If it lands in the dirt/mud, just pick it up and go on about your day. cheers!

Ahahahahaha! Just saw this vid. So much hype for an unsupported product.
So I splurged on a Stetson wide brim cowboy hat for dressing up. Bought the 'GunClub' Stetson western model. Stopped wearing it after a year cuz the 'leather' hat band kept leaving flecks of material on my forehead. Kinda ruins the panache of tipping your Stetson as you meet a filly or enter a building when it looks like you have several melanoma's speckled on your forehead from cheap, Chinese leather bands.
Contacted Stetson today (29Nov2022) about repairing the hatband. Their response in full was:
    "Hi [sucker],
Thank you for contacting Stetson! We're happy to hear you are interested in dusting the old hat off and getting it restored!
Currently, [we] do not offer replacement parts or repairs at this time. We suggest searching for a local Hat Care and Restoration professional near you, or by searching google for a restoration service.
Please let us know if you have any additional questions.
    Thank you,
    Kaila
    Stetson Customer Support"
So apparently I need to call my local hatter or haberdasher or blocker....you know....like every town in America has in abundance...to get repairs for a 'So Expensive' product.

She pointed out sharpshooter anny okley, indiana jones, Ronald regan, and popular celebrities like dua lipa, gg haadi, and Beyoncé. Learn how to use your ears, nobody is idolizing anyone. Yeezys are famous cause Kanye wears and designs them. Does that mean I’m idolizing him? No it’s just facts on why they became famous. Your jealous for no reason clown.
