I've got several felt Stetson cowboy hats. I thought I was committing a cardinal sin by using my steam iron, lol! I am glad to see that I wasn't. I also have some kitchen devices that provide a good amount of steam. I reshaped the crown on a 7x Stetson that I bought second hand from a pinch front to a cattleman's crease, and the crown came out perfect. Unfortunately, shaping the brims is much more challenging for me to arrive at a shape I can live with, but, the beauty is, if I don't like it, I can go at it again. Great video, thanks!

Love American Hat Makers! I did find a black hard felt cowboy hat (a Bailey) with a cool Gus crown, and I steamed the side brims up and curled them in a bit (my style) with my steam iron and shaped it perfectly. Merry Christmas!
I have a tiny suggestion...I have used a steam iron by holdingng a iron (never touching hat) and a PRESSING CLOTH, to protect against scorching g & discoloration. Super helpful content!

I just found an old hat that belonged to my great grandfather but it's made out of corduroy. Does that method still work for that? I really want to reshape the hat since it's been squished between other things for quite some years :/

You can use a stiffener spray if you'd like. I would start by following the video, letting your hat cool completely after you get the shape you desire and see how it goes.
I startched mine with a spray starch. Wore it for three years every day in a super humid salt plant. And it has weathered very well. Used this video to reshape the brim. It had been misshapen from wearing it at work 16 hours a day for three years. But the materials have held very well.

Hard to tell since we cant see it. Best advise is to take it to a local hat shop who does shaping and talk to them. They can either shape it for you or at least they can tell you what finish is on it and how to treat/shape it.

Just watched your video, realise it is from a while ago, I am in the UK and have a Spur Western Wear Beaver Brand 5x hat with a domed crown and I am fairly sure the brim is supposed to be completely flat in style. Watching you it looks like I can Steam Iron it back flat then brush it to remove the Iron marks. What I am wondering is, what is the surface you are Ironing on, is it something special or is it quite like an Ironing Board? I am willing to give it a go myself, however there are not many shops in the UK that could fix it if I get it wrong 🙂
If you're trying to get the brim as flat as possible, you'll want to make sure your surface is stiff so you don't get any waviness in it. The good news is, you can shape your hat however you want to. I purchased the tumbleweed-distressed outback felt fedora hat from you a few months ago. I love the hat been wearing it almost every day now but the brim has started to sag down and has a down slant to it. I would like the brim to be level and flat all the way around. How can I fix this?

Don't know what the material your hat is, if it's felt, you'ddo the same process. If it isn't staying up, you might look into to pinning the brim to the crown.

If you're looking for size as in circumference, yes, you'll need a stretcher. You'll steam the hat first, put it on the stretcher, get the fit you want and let it sit and dry completely let it dry.

It should soften it up to help with shaping it. You could also go to a hat shaper in your area and see if they can help or give you any tips to do it yourself.
I think he's misusing the term "set up". When the material "sets up" that generally means it dries out and hardens in place. It sets. But he kept saying that it sets up as you apply the steam to it.
Try a little less heat & pressure, or better yet you a soft cotton cloth between the iron and the wool. A cotton tee-shirt might be the ticket to prevent getting that "shiny" look.

I was told when you steam the brim do it on the top so you don't ruin the sweat band inside. Is that true?
There is some truth to that. It really depends on the sweatband. If you have a leather one, then definitely steam from the top side. Great question.

There is a possibility it might fight you a little, You still should be able to reshape the crown into your desired look and it will hold.

use your gut/stomach and massage the brim outward

You can use a tea kettle or a pot and make a top that looks like a tea kettle using tinfoil.
