@@YanYeiDei Yes! I've done two or three licks they've played. I can't really nail them exactly like that played (I just recently started doing that, and I haven't practiced much), but I can't even have to copy their playing, I can play the same thing my own way. The most important thing is that these licks and riffs aren't what I usually play, and I'm actually expanding my vocabulary by playing different things, getting out of my comfort zone and challenging myself. Having breakdowns of some of the riffs and licks would make it a bit easier, but there's nothing wrong in working harder. 😁
I am working but for the first time in months I decided to actually take my break rather than working through I think I’ll take my break entitlement more often 😊
One thing I've found with my univibe (Fulltone DejaVibe MKII) is that less can be more. I dial back the speed to super slow and the vibe simply colors the sound in a syrupy way. Couple that with a compressor up front and you get in a Lowell George space for slide. Great episode guys. Good stuff!
The vibe background is far more fascinating than a Leslie and has some cold war context. Not to get too nerdy, but the Univibe inventor Fumio Mieda, says himself in an interview on an Deeper's view episode (Japanese guitar gear channel) available on youtube, he did NOT intend to imitate the Leslie effect, but tried to capture the effect he heard on powerful Radio Moscow propaganda broadcasts jamming japanese middle wave transmisions and hitting the ionosphere. He described it as a phasing effect that was produced by the ionosphere changing height during night. Basically a natural phenomenon made audible by radio waves. Truly inspiring and fascinating stuff.
Great comparison, Gents. Here's my 2 Cents: To save both money and pedal board real estate, I combine my Supro Tremolo with a Mooer Orange 90 Phaser. That's obviously not a Univibe, but it works for me and by switching between Amplitude and Harmonic Tremolo on the Supro, different vibes (no pun intended) can be achieved - plus, by experimenting with the Speed dial on both pedals, different degrees of "swirlyness" can be obtained… Please keep these vids coming!

This is the first episode that may have made me think I don't need a pedal. I've been pondering a RetroVibe but just love how the Monk sounds, and I'm lucky enough to have one already. Thanks so much for the comparison, very insightful.
In the beginning, I thought there was only one type of tremolo (optical). Liked it but I found it not versatile enough to gain a place in my very small pedalboard. Then, I found out about the brown amp tremolo after listening to Chris Stapleton. That's it! I like that! Fast forward to only a few hours ago I realised that Fender used TWO different tremolo circuits in those brown amps, bias trem in the smaller amps and harmonic in the larger, more expensive amps! What a revelation! Love all three but I must admit that if I had to put them in order of preference it would be: bias (as always on type of thing), harmonic (for those Hendrixy moments) and optical (Monster era REM anyone?). In other words, swampy, phasey and choppy. Now the 3 modes in the Flint pedal make perfect sense. I have ordered Mr Black's Mini Tremolo as it offers both bias tremolo as well as harmonic in a neat little package. Reminds me of an old DOD Vibrathang that I used and played a few decades ago. I'm starting to understand the whole tremolo thing much better now. Cheers!
Great vid again! Perfectly timed! I’m literally playing around with fuzz, Univibe and trem and the order of it all. Learn a ton again. Thanks again guys!
This ginormous, beautiful, red lightbulb throbbing in such a casual, almost insinuating way on that Gypsy Vibe is so pleasing to watch, it's almost a sin!
I was watching this video again and the section discussing fuzz/overdrive before or after the vibe. I recently did a test and placed the univibe in the effects loop of my Dr. Z Amp and I found this sounded really good. So, that's another option worth trying if your amp has an effects loop.
I like Tremolo. (I own a Diamond = phenomenal unit) - but there's Nothing like that: hypnotic, liquid, throb you-get from a Uni-Vibe. I get lost in that sound for hours. God Bless Robin Trower.
Excellent video! I’ve loved my Vibe-Bro for years and always wondered how it (vibes) stacked up against other solid harmonic trems that I haven’t had the chance to demo. Also-glad Trey got a shoutout! He’s easily the most inspirational guitarist of my time for me.
What a glorious thing to watch two mates BACK IN THE ROOM!!! To drop in and receive such knowledge bombs and sermons of truth is such a treat to behold. I love you two and have the slightest aversion because your love of tone has lengthened the quest for "MY" sound. Only joking of course. Seriously, THANK YOU DAN and MICK, I can feel the love emanating from the cabs behind you to the joy from within. YOU LEGENDS!!!
My thoughts exactly. I was surprised he wasn't mentioned in the Sustain video. Sustain is "also" his signature sound. Hell he should be mentioned for everything lol.
Dear Mick, I’ve been playing guitar for around 30 years and would consider myself “no slouch” but when I hear you on a strat, tuned to e flat, through your fuzz, doing your “post-Jimi” thing, I get shivers, every damn time. And then I hear you saying things like you’re doing “average Hendrix impressions” or that you’re an “enthusiastic amateur” (paraphrasing you from way back) and I just think “wow - what does that make MY playing?!”. In short, I find your playing totally inspiring, both in tone and in content. Stop selling yourself short! Thank you for listening to my TED Talk...
I prefer phasers before dirt. I tried the Uni-Vibe for a while but that tremolo effect where it loses volume proved it's undoing for me. I'm quite pleased with the Small Stone in its place.
Michael that intro was epic. I have only ever bought 2 pedals straight after see them on UA-cam (TPS on both occasions) the Thorpy Gunshot and the Supro tremolo, I still have both of them.
@@ThatPedalShow Haha! no worries man; it's all useless jargons but sometimes they are useful when transferring ideas musically. I think that's their onl real purpose! I love tremolo and because of you guys I got a really cool trem pedal. Not you guys’ pedal, but cool none the less so thanks. It’s the one with 6 options including another great trem, the square wave trem. Keep making these great vids.
@@ThatPedalShow sorry, forgot to mention that it was specifically the Harmonic tremolo, which for my money is a better alternative to a phase effect. It just holds up better and doesn’t sound thin. Thanks!!!
What a great episode! Man, I need a Harmonius Monk! Just to add at 44:00 I think Dan's definitely recalling the tone off Have A Cigar, the first song on side 2 of Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here album.
You guys should get hold of an Earthquaker Devices The Depths. A proper lightbulb Uni Vibe in a normal size pedal, but its far more flexible than a normal Uni Vibe and has loads of very cool sounds including a great Leslie style effect. Plus it was built on a shipwreck. It's amazing. Great show as always
I love this topic! The three modulations on my board are phaser, vibe, and harmonic trem. Phaser is mostly swoosh with some pulse, harmonic trem is mostly pulse with some swoosh, vibe is in the middle of the two.
@@ROAMZ101 If money were no object it woule be the Drybell Vibe Machine but Iuse the Earthquaker Devices The Depths because I got it for cheap used and it is highly tweakable, if not exaclty a genuine UniVibe sound.
In my mind and feelings, vibe creates a few extraordinarily great moments when your playing luckily happens across its sweet spot. Harmonic Trem feels like that sweet spot happens more often and more predictably, though considerably less dramatic.
You had that light bulb moment at 34:54 when you realized rolling back the guitar volume made the fuzz clean and sparkly. I was so hoping you would reach for the Strat again and plug back fuzz>vibe and roll back the volume. Pretty sure that's how Jimi got all those beautiful sounds from his vibe.
Same. It’s way more widely applicable and as a bonus, cops the vibe sound close enough to save me from buying a drybell $$$ Still love a slow deep phase tho
Gives me great joy to hear that Dan loves The Castle. I'll admit that I actually shed a tear at the end of that movie, laughed my arse off through most of it. "It's the vibe of it your honour" - Dennis Denuto, what a legend. Good times
@@ThatPedalShow no worries. It's awesome! Btw, Looks like you've got the standard TPS two amp set up - Can I ask if you were going wet/dry in this video? If so, were the vibes and trems in both amps or? Cheers.
Best univibe in the world is made by Sabbadius effects. Not sure if I spelled it right, but they have several models based on different hendrix performances, there's an srv one, etc. If you try one it will blow your mind
2nd I've heard. They mentioned him in reference to Analogman I believe. Great to hear Treys name for sure. I just don't think he gets his due respect outside the Phish Universe⭕.
Omg dude when you turned up at the beginning I FELT it. Perfect example of the fuzz face’s oft discussed ability to clean up and/or completely rip with the volume knob as well. (I guess you only played 2 clean notes with it engaged but they were in fact clean :P)
Haha thanks for the reply - I didn’t mean to sound like I was crying about lack of clean tone samples, just correcting myself bc it came off like I thought the FF was on for the entirety of his intro playing. I don’t know why I was trying to avoid being flamed in comments like anyone cares what I think 😂 Really enjoyed this and the older dives into Vibes. Had to listen to Heard it Through the Grapevine this morning because of this video :)
dan, thanks for giving a shout out to trey anastasio..a player whose Ross use inspired the keeley compressor and who gets a ton of misplaced jam band hate
You have to cover the fact that its awesome using 2 tremolos. I use a vibe first then I have a flint in the wet chain and then a supro amp and the 2 trem together opens up a whole new world!
Hey guys. Great show as usual. I have a vibe and harmonic tremolo on my board as my only wobble pedals. TPS is where I first learned about both types and I love ‘em so thanks. In my case it’s a Fulltone DejaVibe and a Walrus Monument. The vibe goes before the drive section, the tremolo after delay before reverb. I’ve discovered that a vibe sounds killer into a Prince of Tone on “OD” with the drive at about noon or a little better. The POT’s slight mid lift and bass rolloff help it cut. Thanks for all you do.
Dan/Mick great show as always. Loved the tones again and the conversation about signal chains of fuzz/vibe. Phaser kept on popping up, which is great and I’ve been having a great time lately with Muff>Phase90 Script for top end frequency action with my Firebird......loving it. Regards Kev 👍😊
Wonderful job. Really fascinating as usual. Only one point: i think that the Gladio OD had slightly too much gain in order to reproduce a plexi in overdrive. That can have slightly altered the result of the experiments. In this direction i hope to see another episode about the Fuzz Face - Wah dilemma and a more going in depth in the Vibrato-Chorus-Pitch land. Keep On Rockin' Guys we love you.
Yep, all a question of degree, but hopefully you can join the dots! Would be cool to actually do it with a cranked Plexi tho. Mick here. I’m in. HEAVEN!

Great video! I have to start by saying I'm not a fan of tremolo. Not because it doesn't sound cool, but because it physically messes with my head at volume. Listening to the harmonic trem however, doesn't seem to have the same affect on me and I really enjoy it. Mick, your playing in this video is top notch. No disrespect to Dan whatsoever, but you can tell you really vibe (pun intended)with those sounds. Also, that Casino sounds so good. Such an amazing change after the pickup upgrade. This was another great example of how big a deal pedal order is on the sounds you are trying to achieve! Cheers guys.
I really need to get myself a harmonic trem. I've got an old Seymour Duncan Shapeshifter (old mono version), a Boss RT-20 (vibe/lesley) and a Fender Super Reverb with amp trem, and NONE of them does what the Supro or the Monk do. Cheers guys. Loud is more good!

As soon as I saw univibe I knew this would be a good video 😀
2:08 Maaaaaaan that sounds so good and dirty, love it!
Vibe or harmonic trim? Yes please.
Great show and awesome playing, gents. Mick's opening bit just about made me drool, too. Great stuff.
Thank you Scott. :9)
Dan and Mick-your playing was on fire in this episode. And I love my Harmonious Monk. Running it wet-dry and its fabulous.
Thanks Matt! And thank you for buying a Monk!
vibe>fuzz>drive and fuzz>vibe>drive both sound amazing!!!!
Good job mentioning Trey Anastasio. It's one of his signature effects.
My thoughts exactly. I was surprised he wasn't mentioned in the Sustain video. Sustain is "also" his signature sound. Hell he should be mentioned for everything lol.
@@Headroom1 He is like a power user of: Sustain, univibe, wah, pitch bending, and compression.
Yes, your Harmonious Monk is the best. I literally sold all my other Trems and only use that. Amazing pedal!
Cheers Matt, yeah, it’s an awesome thing 🤓🙏
So jealous, lol.
Can’t wait to get mine.
Holy moly! That intro was probably your best ever
The gypsy vibe and the rest of pedal pawns line up is so amazing would like to see u guys do their fuzz and Texas twang pedals in some sort of video
Love the Supro Trem, not only because of the terrific harmonic trem, but also for the dirty Supro sound when the Trem is off and Gain dimed.
I'm quite pleased with the Small Stone in its place.
oh my lord. Loving the sounds of the uni-vibe 1st in the chain. Holy moly!
Ever since Joey Landreth, I'm on Team Harmonic Trem. \m/
Tell him he's dreamin. Harmonious Monk - ahhh that's goin' straight to the pool room
Ha!
Hahahaha!!!!
@@ThatPedalShow You know what that means don't you? That Pedal Show has been compulsorily purchased
That Pedal Show - Next dual pedal you design/collab on, can you name it 'Coco' or 'Son of Coco'?
Dan (Dale) dug a hole. Tell ‘em Dan…
The Serenity
Michael that intro was epic.
I have only ever bought 2 pedals straight after see them on UA-cam (TPS on both occasions) the Thorpy Gunshot and the Supro tremolo, I still have both of them.
Ha! Thanks Karl!
Mick, that opening - no words, cheers
Great B Phrygian Dominant stuff with sus/7 chords/arpeggios at the end Dan! I love it that you do play out of the box! Cheerio
Mick has left the chat. Hahahahahha
@@ThatPedalShow Haha! no worries man; it's all useless jargons but sometimes they are useful when transferring ideas musically. I think that's their onl real purpose! So yeah you are not missing anything if you are not a session player, or someone who needs to communicate and transfer musical ideas to others constantly. Cheerio as always!
I love tremolo and because of you guys I got a really cool trem pedal. Not you guys’ pedal, but cool none the less so thanks. It’s the one with 6 options including another great trem, the square wave trem. Keep making these great vids.
Cheers Jo 🤓👍
Nice!
We’re goin’ to Bonny Doon! Love The Castle! As a side note that retro vibe sounds superb
Literally just days ago I was googling “what’s the different between harmonic tremolo and univibe”! Excited to give this a watch!
Hoooway!
I love this topic! The three modulations on my board are phaser, vibe, and harmonic trem. Phaser is mostly swoosh with some pulse, harmonic trem is mostly pulse with some swoosh, vibe is in the middle of the two.
Thank you for a brilliant description, what vibe would you choose on the market today?
@@ROAMZ101 If money were no object it woule be the Drybell Vibe Machine but Iuse the Earthquaker Devices The Depths because I got it for cheap used and it is highly tweakable, if not exaclty a genuine UniVibe sound.
@@BobEllis79 the eqd depths is certainly catching my interest. Thanks for getting back to me.
Awww that real Leslie. Loved that episode :)
Nothing like it. Soooooo cooooooool!
The drooling is how you know you're really on it. All of Jimi's guitars are probably filled with his DNA. Fantastic playing!
Nice to see long wheelbase transit is still around
That you remember the full name truly warms my cockles! Hahaha!
Micks intro was what i want to be like when i grow up as a player
In my mind and feelings, vibe creates a few extraordinarily great moments when your playing luckily happens across its sweet spot. Harmonic Trem feels like that sweet spot happens more often and more predictably, though considerably less dramatic.
That’s an insightful take on it. Thank you!
Dave here, hello! That opening was mouth watering.
Thanks Dave!
I didn't know I needed a Harmonic Tremolo pedal until now :)
I was a phaser junkie until I learned, I really wanted a harmonic trem
I have an mxr phase 95 and agree with you
Same. It’s way more widely applicable and as a bonus, cops the vibe sound close enough to save me from buying a drybell $$$
Still love a slow deep phase tho
Gives me great joy to hear that Dan loves The Castle. I'll admit that I actually shed a tear at the end of that movie, laughed my arse off through most of it. "It's the vibe of it your honour" - Dennis Denuto, what a legend. Good times
Smell that? … two stroke!
@@ThatPedalShow Thing I like most with a two-stroke is how it compliments the serenity! Haha - genius movie. Could do this all day 🙂
So good. Your show is network quality. Seriously. So useful, yes, but a truly entertaining show.
Thank you!
Great show guys. I love my Monk. I've been through a shed load of vibes, finally ended up with a Monk and he's come out on top...
Yay! Thanks for buying one!
My apologies for not watching to very end back in April. I now know so much more about light house mechanics and the recipients of pirates' plunder.
Is this the first mention of Trey Anastasio on TPS? Didn’t even know Phish was on your radar!
2nd I've heard. They mentioned him in reference to Analogman I believe. Great to hear Treys name for sure. I just don't think he gets his due respect outside the Phish Universe⭕.
@@adambrunner9462 great to hear him mentioned along with Hendrix, Trower and Gilmour too. Definitely among the GoaTs!
Omg dude when you turned up at the beginning I FELT it. Perfect example of the fuzz face’s oft discussed ability to clean up and/or completely rip with the volume knob as well. (I guess you only played 2 clean notes with it engaged but they were in fact clean :P)
Many more videos where there’s lots of clean. Cheers!
Haha thanks for the reply - I didn’t mean to sound like I was crying about lack of clean tone samples, just correcting myself bc it came off like I thought the FF was on for the entirety of his intro playing. I don’t know why I was trying to avoid being flamed in comments like anyone cares what I think 😂
Really enjoyed this and the older dives into Vibes. Had to listen to Heard it Through the Grapevine this morning because of this video :)
Very interesting with vibe in the middle. Thats pretty awesome sounding.
Never would have thought of doing that. Thanks guys.
dan, thanks for giving a shout out to trey anastasio..a player whose Ross use inspired the keeley compressor and who gets a ton of misplaced jam band hate
You have to cover the fact that its awesome using 2 tremolos. I use a vibe first then I have a flint in the wet chain and then a supro amp and the 2 trem together opens up a whole new world!
Yes, I do the harmonic term of the Flint before my Supro Trem-Verb and it is cool. But then, that amp is rather fine.
Mick here. I’m in. HEAVEN!
You guys sounded friggin awesome this morning!! Painting soundscapes. I am a Trower fanatic, but I love the Harmonius Monk. I don't have either a Vibe or trem. Soon, I will soon!! LOL Damn!! Enjoyed yalls playing, I've got to go listen again. Oss! Good morning from Cut and Shoot, Texas!
Trower fanatic with no vibe!?!? Please correct this immediately! Ha! Much love to you Roger!
That rig sounds great! I need to find the episode that you talked about that strat so I can brush up on what you were playing.
No disrespect to Dan whatsoever, but you can tell you really vibe
(pun intended)with those sounds. Also, that Casino sounds so good. Such an amazing change after the pickup upgrade.
This was another great example of how big a deal pedal order is on the sounds you are trying to achieve!
Cheers guys.
Simply great. Beautiful sounds and beautiful knowledge imparted.
Great episode guys. It all sounds good to me.
Yeah baby! Harm trem is deffo its own thing. More loud more good!
For me Mick & Dan its Univibe all the way , love it , Hendrix , Trower , Stevie Ray , as soon as I heard you in the intro it makes me want to grab my guitar and play , it sounds even better with a Wah kicked in to.
