    Thomas, tomorrow marks one year since i started doing Keto. I've lost 200 pounds in this year. My doctor was worried about my heart, she sent me to the heart doc. Heart doctor was happy with the speed as the weight was worse for me than the loss.

    Good stuff. I like the chill delivery, and the honesty about your experiences and about the solutions that have worked for you and others. I also dig the "main idea" delivery, the friendliness to being in the proper zone, moving in the proper direction. That's awesome, because we're all rather variable, so we have trouble sticking to absolute directives regarding... most things in life.

    I started keto to help my ME/CFS which I developed after a throat virus in 2005 and, stupidly I was on a very low fat high carb diet - remember the high fibre diet people? Yes well, don't do that... 🙄
    I struggled to stay in ketosis so ended up doing carnivore in January 2023. A year later I am virtually 95% recovered. I have no joint pains, my brain fog has gone and I have no fatigue. Even my prolapsed discs and long term tendonitis no longer cause issues - or at least there is no pain even if the discs and tendons might still be repairing.
    My first aim wasn't weight loss but I did lose 3 stone in a year and my physical strength and stamina improved during that time.
    I was pretty poorly with my ME?CFS. I was bedridden for quite a few years and housebound for longer. I'm not going to pretend , I miss a lot of foods but I missed my life more. The improvements to my health far outweigh the limited food choice. I am now able to be out with my horses and ride again. At my worst, a good day was being able to go outside for a bit of a cuddle and maybe brush a mane for a short time before returning to bed to sleep.
    Do I fall off the carnivore wagon - yes sometimes. I'm human and to deny myself any treat EVER isn't sustainable. But most days I have beef, pork, eggs, some cheese and coffee with double cream. I sometimes have some berries wwith some double cream. I know some carnivores couldn't manage the dairy so at least I can do that. I also recognise that many would find my diet far too restrictive, and honestly if it's just about keeping weight under control then a more relaxed long term WOE is better than loading up on high carb/processed diets. We have to experiment and find our own sweet spot.
    (NB I did get alarming heart rate symptoms when I first started carnivore but quickly sorted with electrolytes.)

    It's intriguing to note that the protein proportion advice presented here diverges from the insights shared by other protein authorities such as Don Layman ( ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxSM-q5Yuep7TQHptmNF9456kUKqQkhjf7 ). Considering one's age, there seems to be a call for a higher protein intake, a sentiment echoed by Layman. It's like a daily fixed requirement where the only 'macro dials' at our disposal to tweak are the levels of fats and carbohydrates. Quite the nutritional puzzle!

    • @Cdfitness90
      @Cdfitness90 3 місяці тому +1

      Because carbs and fat are basically irrelevant you need 20 grams of fat daily to function.... besides that its doesn't matter... therefore its wiser to solidify a set protein intake and the rest is up for interpretation. making the diet optimal and easy to adhere to. The point of the age related increase for protein is to help offset age related atrophy

    You’re a wonderful teacher may I add that I believe the best way to eat is the Tao way which is where you combined meats and veggies or carbs and veggies I lost a lot of weight and more importantly what you have to take care of is your metabolism rate. In the early 80s I was on the keto diet and I lost weight so fast that my metabolism slowed down and even though I was a very thin person I was in New York modeling and had to be extra thin what I didn’t count on, the diet doing was ruining my metabolism because after I lost 15 pounds, of course most of it came back quickly because my metabolism slowed down and then after that, it took me years to finally get my metabolism, running well, which is the answer to all diets, all losing weight and all health, you need to eat stuff and get it through your body quicklywhatever you don’t use for energy instead of letting it stay in your colon as toxins or in your body as fat. Please check out the diets very easy to stay on your whole life and your whole body not some freaky thing where you can’t have all the fruits and vegetables you want that’s just crazy that makes no sense because the healthiest food on the planet out of the color of the rainbow and you need to eat them abundantly every day day.

    Tom. Thank you for helping me get on keto almost 2 years ago. 60 lbs lighter now, almost at my college bodybuilding weight, and I'm 61yrs old. I did give up on you a year ago as you seemed to contradict your own videos very frequently. All of us in this space are definitely growing in application and fine-tuning our WOE. I'm carnivore now which is even easier to follow, mostly red meat. But I've subscribed again as many of your recent videos are lining up with current nutritional science, aka protein and exercise, so good on you. Overall we're all on our own path to health. But this video especially makes alot of sense, the importance of getting rid of our metabolically diseased fat as fast as possible then find a WOE that is sustainable for you. I thank you for that, Great stuff keep up the good work!! 🥩🧈🥓🍳✌️👍

    For myself, I am one of those people who love the foods needed for a keto diet and I find it very easy to do intermittent fasting with those foods. But every now and then I do miss eating real pizza, ice cream, and especially some pasta dishes such as chicken Alfredo. So I just take a break for maybe a week or two and just go back to keto very easily because I start getting sick of junk food and start craving meat and eggs again. I don't go out very much, but when I do, I just eat like everyone else at the party. Of course, I gain a few pounds, but now that I've been on keto for a few years, I know exactly what to do and can shed those pounds quickly. I think this is the only way to make keto sustainable in the long term. Otherwise, if you are feeling deprived all the time, it definitely is not sustainable. No truer words have been said that if your eating habits feel like a diet instead of a lifestyle choice, you won't be able to lose weight and keep it off.

      It depends on the person. A ketogenic diet is one that keeps you in ketosis. Twenty grams or less pretty much ensures it with most people. There are some people who can stay in ketosis on higher and there are some who need fewer grams to stay in ketosis and feel well. Dr. Ken Berry says he needs 10 or fewer to keep the fat off.

The goal is to trim off about 3-5 more lbs and then focus on low carb/keto and only do the carbs on quality food.. For example, an amazing pizza once in a while vs just an OK pizza. Less weight means longer distance running, longer time on the road and mountain bikes too without needing a break. Keep up the great work! Love the videos and the science you back it with!

    One thing I noticed when I went full keto for 8 months with no break, I focused the foods on keto, but I also made sure to use organic plant-based supplements (multi vitamin/mineral/phytonutrient, etc.) to fill the nutrition gaps and it worked great. It was worth the extra price to get better supplements over the cheap stuff and the bloodwork for physicals I got during that time was awesome. I also back to my college athletics weight, which was a nice despite it still falling short of my college athletics physique.

    My fastest weight loss occurred on the Paleo Intermittent Fast; not related to the Paleo Diet. A 12-hour FEED window, followed by a 36-hour water/coffee/tea with Stevia FAST. I had to set an alarm reminding myself when it was time to eat as I no longer spend every day planning my next meal. I tried to eat clean, most of the time, but didn't count calories. My energy levels stayed the same after a very quick adaptation. I started dropping a pant-size every 2 weeks. There were no problems with loose skin due to autophagy. My doctors intervened because I am on daily medications required to be taken with food.

I'm not sure if he doesn't know how to read a study or just thinks his followers aren't smart enough to look up the results of the study themselves. It confirms what we already know about keto. You lose a lot of water weight and it's no better in fat loss than any other calorie restriction diet.

    Hello! You did not mention that you eat beans on your Mediterranean diet. The foods you mentioned that you are now eating is basically still keto... except the fruit maybe?

  • @alphacause
    @alphacause 4 місяці тому +5

    It is important to distinguish between fat loss and water loss, when looking at the scale. Ketogenic diets induce very quick results, initially, because they have a diuretic effect - meaning that it purges a lot of water - that other diets do not have. So a lot of the initial phase of weight loss, on low carb diets, is from water more than it is from fat. Where I think ketogenic diets are more effective, is that they make calorie control easier, because they are, in the long run, far more satiating. I think what would be more interesting is if a DEXA scan were done to see which diet actually produces the quickest fat loss as opposed to weight loss.

    • @conforzo
      @conforzo 4 місяці тому +1

      Water weight still contributes to reduction of your waistline. So it's not really a thing to worry about.

    • @alphacause
      @alphacause 4 місяці тому

      @@conforzo I agree. I didn't mean to trivialize the health benefits of losing water weight. Losing excess water is important because, not only does it reduce the waistline, as you rightly pointed out, but it also reduces blood pressure and stress on the joints. What I was trying to covey is that the reason ketogenic diets cause weight loss so rapidly, in the beginning, is because it purges excess water more quickly from the body. For people on a ketogenic diet, this is important to know, so they don't expect this type of rapid weight loss to continue after, say, the first two weeks, when all the excess water is gone. Then keto, assuming we equate for calories, matches other weight loss protocols in terms of how fast the weight drops.

    Keto-ish plus cardio is the ONLY way I've been able to lose weight and keep it off. But I have to almost totally eliminate sugar and anything sweet tasting (including substitutes). The sweet taste cranks up my craving for sugar to 11. The only thing that has caused me to gain part of the weight back has been injuries that prevented me from doing enough cardio.

      Switch to some weight lifting. Any repetition exercise that has high reps will destroy your joints as you get older and healing ability decreases. Even lifting light weights with many repetitions will do the same. I knew a few competitive runners and they never ran more than three days a week to prevent injuries. Substitute some cardio days with medium lower rep weight lifting days. This will also prevent too much muscle loss, especially on a calorie reduced diet which keto is. That's my suggestion. ANYTHING in excess is bad......even exercise.

    The only issue with undulating between Ketosis and Mediterranean is building up insulin insensitivity during higher bouts of carbohydrate intake. I think the remedy for this is based on the greater fatty acid profile while observing ketosis. I also feel that doing in frequent one to two time per month watered fast, but also feel good. Cheat days are important as well. As long as there is a list that adhere to healthy cheats ahead of time. Getting away from bolstering one’s health is never a treat.

    pretty much feel like i do similar. i started out near keto, i know i couldnt fully commit to it but just even being mindfull of how many calories and carbs and fats you intake helps a great deal and can plan meals around them. ill still use keto labeled products too cause some are just good. when i can have 2 packs of high protein oatmeal, 2 pieces of keto jelly toast with high fiber jelly, and a greek yogurrt with my coffee i feel like i just ate a 3 course meal but it was only near 600cal and 41+g of protein.
    i know it should be pretty obvious knowledge by now but also with a good diet you need to exercise and it dont need to be anything rigorous or stressfull, if you can get out for an hour and just do some fast walking that goes a long way to helping you stay in shape and keeping weight off.

    What Thomas goes on to talk about further in this video is of even greater value for Type 2 Diabetics who wish to remain in remission for life after embracing a Low Carb Lifestyle (and Type 1 who wish to eliminate the debilitating highs and lows in blood glucose and reduce injected insulin by 50%). The only proven way to sustainably keep blood glucose and insulin in the non-diabetic range is to become Fat/Keto Adapted to avoid constant eating and be able to do Intermittent fasting to reduce visceral fat and avoid cyclic weight gain that puts it back. To sustain this for life while enjoying meals and being able to occasionally eat higher carbs at social gatherings (without being kicked out of being Fat Adapted) requires becoming Metabolically Flexible which can be achieved with a "Modified Mediterranean Keto Diet". The next important fact to know is that as one adopts this particular diet for life, after a few years or less, Blood Ketones drop to 0.1mmol/l in the non-fasted state which may concern many and lead them to unhealthy ways to raise ketones again which is totally unnecessary. Prof Tim Noakes explains this phenomenon in a Q&A session shown in ua-cam.com/video/psqBPrwicQE/v-deo.html
