A new and exciting video every day of whatever I'm playing, unless I ran out of videos for the week.
“The ancients....are douche bags” that caught me off guard that was hilarious
To quote the other major video on Rain World lore by Daszombes, "[The Ancients] were intelligent...and, in lore, a BUNCH OF DICKS."
Seems like this sentiment has plenty of consensus behind it (including from the iterators themselves!)
Rain World lore in a nutshell: A bunch of suicidal Buddhists build robots
Part 2 of Rain Worlds Lore: 5 Pebble kills his mom and gets cancer
Part 3: Robodudes cat gives mom a drain cleaner
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
And also most of said robots were also suicidal after ironically being tasked to find the meaning of life.
Rain World pt4: slug cat finds love of his life and she dies
Hey, I dont know if you saw this, but on the switch the hunter and monk have unique endings for entering the void fluid. I won't say anything, but, you might wanna check out hunter's ending...
Already did! Wish I'd been able to include it here but at least it doesn't change what I said...
Can you tell me what happens? :)

@@Tabby3456 to find his brother
One question I still have is: What exactly are the guardians? Are they even older than the ancients, and naturally guarded the void sea when the ancients first found it? Or could they somehow have been purposed organisms made by the ancients to stop unworthy people from taking a dip in the pool? (Maybe to try and prevent more echoes?)
I think your second point seems pretty valid tbh
We won't ever know for sure...
Their hands look very much like wires, and their heads light up like projectors.
I think they have been made by the ancients to act as "karma gates". Like you said, to prevent the creation of more echoes
If guardians were supposed to stop ancients from entering the void sea, then the void sea wouldn't be filled with void worms and the ancient society wouldn't have withered away. So, I assume that the only purpose of guardians was to keep animals form entering the void sea since they didn't want to lose their animals. Whether or not animals would ascend when they enter the void sea probably isn't a concern to ancients, but I assume that normally animals would ascend.
I know I am late, however I don’t care so here are my thoughts:
The guardians could not have been naturally there, since the tunnels to the void sea were made by the ancients. In addition they not only look like purposed organisms, they also use technology like the iterators to manipulate gravity (although on a much smaller scale).
They’re purpose is shrouded in mystery, however I believe it was to ensure control over the entrances to the void sea. Those who have access to it would have had grate power, since it was one of the most efficient sources of energy available. As such it is likely the guardians were built by the ancients who owned the entrances as a means of securing that power. How exactly this would have worked and if it really is they’re true purpose might never be known, especially since the karma-system is not well understood.
I would also like to talk about the echoes. Contrary to what many believe, they were not a widely known phenomenon. Instead they’re existence was only speculated about. Evidence for this is seen in one of moons lines. Quote: “There were some horror stories though... That if your ego was big enough, not even the Void Fluid could entirely cross you out, and a faint echo of your pompousness would grandiosely haunt the premises forever.”.
Now some thoughts on void fluid: This last part has little to do with the original question and requires a bit of particle physics to understand so fell free to ignore it. It is never properly explained how to get energy from void fluid. I have found a hypothetical way to gain ginormous amounts of energy that would require verry pure void fluid. First some general knowledge: most of the mass of an object comes from energy that is used to hold the core of atoms together. If void fluid can dissolve part of these cores, then the energy used to hold them together would get released. This is likely not what the developers thought of and the science is both highly oversimplified and rather questionable, however it would be a good and interesting way to gain enormous amounts of energy rather quickly.
That is all I have for now. Thank you for reading!

« Hey dude, It's me, hope you doing well.

its literally just a f*king OK message
Fantastic video. Although I have two thoughts about it.
- I always thought the iterators used water as a cooling fluid, much like our own modern computers. Cool water from the sea or underground is flushed through the high power circuitry to prevent overheating, which leads to vapour and then the rain (as opposed to the machines literally drinking it).
- The guardians at the depths, protecting the entrance to the void fluid, might be there for a specific reason. They knew about the failures of the void fluid technique, how those with too much attachment would end up trapped in limbo. So it makes sense to prevent entry to those who have not yet reached enlightenment. This full amount of karma might mean that the being's mind has theoretically evolved to a point where their attachment and ego have dissolved, and so then they may gain entry to the void sea with a much greater chance of success.
This was SO GOOD. I am profoundly grateful for this content.
EDIT: Some of this info is outdated interpretations from 2 years ago, like the karma flower death interpretation. Take it with a grain of salt.
Amazing work! You summed up a majority of the lore quite well, and the cinematics felt very fitting. I don't believe anyone has quite covered RW's lore in a video yet. And with that, I will clear up some misconceptions, gift knowledge and some theories:
1. Echoes do not have tentacles, those are burnt rags on their backs, as they are the much deformed remains of the ancient in the top mural of 5P representing karma 5, which some have theorized to be "survivor" or "ego". Their necks are very elongated, their arms completely missing, their bodies deformed and everything else remaining almost completely "burnt" by void fluid. Their shape somewhat resembles a Miros bird either in a meditating or fetal position.
2. Hunter's cancer is confirmed by the developers to be related to the rot. Some theorized this to be an experiment NSH made in attempt to figuring out how to break an iterator's taboo: By coding it into another creature's organic cells. (ENDING SPOILERS FOR 1.7 AHEAD)
Due to this, Hunter does not ascend, the taboo forcing Hunter back in NSH's arms, so he can experiment again and again, constantly, hoping it will lead to them finding a way to break their own taboos. Poor Hunter.
3. Another theory: Some of us have the idea that karma is a physical, cellular force, that can be modified with the right equipment or, well, other assistance (pilgrimage). These cells can also be scanned by karma gates, guardians and whatever the giant (X) in the depths is meant to be. It could be likely that dying to the rot would wipe these cells out completely, completely breaking the cycle but also wiping you out consciously as well, where ascension does something similar except, well, you're far more than just flat out dead, lol.
4. The way death works in Rain World. Going based off the Karma Flower lore, it appears RW's world exists in possibly infinite parallel realities, though whether these realities are real or simply dreams is open to interpretation. If you die, you are dead in that reality, but will have woken up alive and well, aware that you have died, but unaware why you come back. Eating a Karma Flower will allow you to come in contact with these planes to stop it from happening.
There's obviously plenty more beyond this, and have constantly been discussed over the discord, which is IMO the best place to discuss theories and lore with others. There are still of course other things so beyond mysterious, like the Void Spawn (yellow ghosts floating around often seen trapped in eggs) or the cabinet beasts (the weird stuff in the cabinets of the memory crypts). It would be interesting to see videos in the future touching upon the more deep and confusing part of RW's world, but that's mostly just speculation and interpretation. Still fun nonetheless.
The “cabinet beasts” you’re talking about are actually memories of the ancients that were stored their before they decided to take a void fluid bath. There is a pearl which describes this in shaded citadel
@@svaert That is very highly likely referring to the pearls. It even appears as if the pearl is referring to itself. "In this vessel are the living memories of..." and then the ancient name and what they did.
Though that could also be referring to their old physical bodies left behind from the void baths after ascending. The echoes refer to their old selves and you as "vessel of flesh" or "flesh prison". Considering how fleshy and organic the cabinet beasts are, I don't think it's far-fetched to assume they are the somewhat mutated remains of the ancients who ascended via void fluid baths.
So basically they stored their deformed corpses to be cherished and guarded by walking scissors.
Wait, where is it confirmed Hunter does not ascend when he jumps in the void fluid?
@@casualbird7671 It's not confirmed, just part of a theory. Also remember that this comment is older from when I was less informed on certain aspects of RW lore, so a few aspects are inaccurate. Not all of them, just a few.

daaaaw, thanks!
what voice modifier (if any) did you use for the echoes? if you didn't use one how did you edit the audio?
It's a bunch of Audacity filters, mostly a "reverse reverb" effect that I looked up how to do because I wanted it to sound like Solar from Baldur's Gate II

Lol I thought of you when I watched the echo part in this video. Yeah I know it's a 4 year old comment and a 5 year old video
Man I already figured this out by bringing pearls to moon, but damn lemme say that searching the globe just for pearls is a pain in the ass.
Edit: oh, and there's one little detail you left out about The Hunter. NSH had assigned it with 2 tasks, one being to go and deliver the slag reset keys to Moon, and the other being.. to ascend. NSH had somehow figured out how to 'attach' himself to the slugcat in a way that when the slugcat ascended, he would ascend aswell. That's why when you ascend on The Hunter mode, you can see NSH grabbing you(technically he like ejects himself out of your body but you know what I mean) and cradling you in his arms. You brought him freedom from his mortal coil, and the only reward he has in store for you is warm, welcoming arms into the void sea.
Unlike Moon, he is still connected to his overseers. Once his overseers had confirmed the Hunter had ascended, he killed himself and.. well, you know the rest.
poopoo eater sounds like a theory at best
@@corbinbarron8772 got any damning evidence or are you gonna sit there saying I'm just theorizing without bringing anything to the argument?
poopoo eater I’m sorry asshole, did you bring any evidence or did you just start spouting shit like it’s canon? Innocent until proven guilty, just a theory until proven factual
poopoo eater if he wanted you to ascend, he would have given you the max karma to begin with, and there’s no evidence I know of that NSH is gone by the time survivor shows up, there’s not even solid proof that the iterator hunter ends in the arms of is actually NSH, it could be sliver. You also said he killed himself, which he is literally incapable of doing. It’s a huge plot point. A lot of this you honestly just pulled out of your ass, passed as canon, then got pissy and defensive when I called you out. It’s your god damn job to provide evidence, you’re the one leaving information.
@@corbinbarron8772 iterators can kill themselves, but like, sure buster.(lmao I guess Sliver doesn't exist anymore) Also, who else would it be? Sliver died before the events of Rain World took place, and it is already in made clear through Hunter's pearl that NSH specifically assigned him to go to moon.
Did you forget that the Hunter is karmically imbalanced? NSH couldn't max out his karma, and neither could 5P, that's why you have to visit 4 echoes(or just three if you visit 5P) before ascending, else the guardians will murder you to death.

20:47, lmfao.
youve probably heard this before, but echoes are just horror stories! the pearl you find is to explain echoes, the real reason why the iterators were made is to ascend every other being. thats why five pebbles tells you how to ascend, and why he says his original purpose probably isnt much use to gourmand. adding onto this, there were likely many many ancients, considering how many cities there were and the amount of buildings and such. considering that theres only 9 echoes, i dont think it would be enough reason to build supercomputers. and for a concluding thought: why would all the ancients mass ascend in void fluid if they were so inclined to make massive calculators?
TLDR: iterators were built to figure out how to ascend the dumb little animals like slugcats.
Was it ever stated anywhere that the previous civilization wasn't human? I believe it's open for interpretation.
There’s in-game art showing ancients
Fantastic video! Thank you, Rain World defintively deserves much more attention!

Very well written and explains SO much. Still I would like to know more specific lore on the regions of the game's surface. Such as what is the purpose for the Sky Islands, and what did the ancients use the Shaded Citadel for?
Sky Islands was a communications system for use by iterators. Shaded citadel was a religious site which at least at some point was used to store the memories of ascending ancients

Great video! I find lore behind rainworld quite interesting. An entire ancient civilization struggled to commit suicide so they built colossal computing machines to help them out, which then struggled to commit suicide themselves. #relatable. Though it wouldve been much better if one could figure it out the story himself while playing the game, not by reading it up on the wiki or watching this well done video.
Ascension in RW is not necessarily suicide at all. It's more like losing your physical form but still remaining, where dying permanently to something such as The Rot would flat out kill you and that's that. Think of ascension like abandoning the physical realm in favor of a new one because the world above has been turned into too much of a mess.
If you’re a completionist, you can collect every single data pearl in the game and get them read by Moon.
@@svaert Thats what i mean, if you are not a completionist its quite hard to understand the lore on you first run. I think that its a flaw, but not a major one.
@@robocrab5811 How would you tell a story like this to the player? You can't really just have machines following you and reading stuff, that wouldn't work. For any of the story to work you as the player have to go find it.

Excellently presented piece Mr Blargh. This game clearly appeals to the storyteller in you. It reminds me a lot of Hollow Knight (ruined civilization, the void beneath, story told in teasing fragments), only much much darker, the self annihilation theme is really affecting. It looks amazing too, really takes pixel art to an entirely new dimension, beautiful and disturbing, ethereal and savage. And from what I've heard, this game is significantly beyond my meagre skill ceiling, so I look forward to experiencing it vicariously through whatever you decide to concoct for us.

Does this parts from dramatisation sections 19:36 21:15 really another cities in the skyes? How do they float from the lore of the game?
I don't think they're floating, you climb up the underside when you go up The Leg and Exterior. The Iterators inhabit what seem to be giant towers, and the new cities were built on top of them.
They have “legs”

there's a part of me which wishes for this aspect of the game to be more apparent beyond the meeting with 5p and the walk along the top of the wall, staring in wonder at the abandoned city.
i don't know why i was under the impressions that 5p started the rain in the first place. it makes more sense tying everyone else in if everyone is watercooling their supercomputers. 5p was just the jerk who did 4x the regular amount, hurting his fellow iterator
It could be that 5p found a way for iterator to ascend, but not for himself. He killed the BSM who apparently was ok with that, she could force him to stop in any moment but she waited until it was too late. Probably some code don't let her pass away silently?Hunter brings her back into cycle with slag keys though

My defenseless self: *where’s my family?*
24:42 is this not what the iterators want though? In the end I mean. Why was this something to worry about when their original purpose is pretty much obsolete and they are unable to do anything else. Being unable to die by their own hands, surely they would wish for another to cause it instead, right? Could someone explain this to me.
I believe it was explained elsewhere that she “dies” in the sense that she is still alive, just trapped in a motionless, unresponsive body
25:28 If less water = death, isn’t that what they were looking for? Why did they stop if using less water would terminate them
I too thought this was a contradiction, but then realized: their problem isn't an inability to find a method to off themselves. The problem is their inability to pursue it, because they are hard-wired to avoid termination at all costs. Moon's pleading is a result of her programming, all while IN HER HEART OF HEARTS probably welcomed the prospect of dropping ded.
Though in the end it turned out she was right to fear a collapse...

Omg best vid ive seen all year love this keep making videos like this 🐈🐈🐈
So, have the slugcats broken the cycle?
We see in all the game endings that the Slugcats reach some sort of afterlife, which seems to directly go against the cycle of resurrection.
The Ancients may have ironically created creatures who naturally broke the cycle, perhaps because they have no ego or attachments to the world (probably because the world really sucks for them)
Each karma symbol represents a different facet of “ego” which is removed upon resting in a shelter. K1 represents wrath, K2 represents lust, K3 is either capital greed or companionship, K4 is indulgence or gluttony, & K5 is self-preservation
I've been thinking. What if all the Ancients didn't go into the void fluid? It's pretty common to see highly industrialized and technologically advanced civilizations have increasingly lower birthrates. I'm wondering if the Ancients eventually dwindled into nothing due to a combination of void fluid and lack of new births. Since it's not explicitly stated whether one species can reincarnate into another or not, perhaps some of the animals or scavengers you come across were once Ancients in a past life.
Incredible game, awesome video. Thanks!
Would it be funny If I said my first playtrhrough as survivor I ate all of her wisps... listen I didnt know what it was, you cant blame me for not knowing. I didnt have the mark of communication.
I can blame you
I still regret doing the same for monk. I starved myself because I struggled with the platforming section and she had exactly five Neurons
Im wondering if the animals took over the citys on top
I imagine there to be no life in those cities maybe perhaps the undead husks of ancients who failed to pass on. Ancients who failed to pass split into two seperate entities. The Echoes and the Husks. Husks are half aware enraged coporeal beings which know no death and they kill any organism that happens to cross their path. But thats my morbid theory and there is no canon to it.
I'm thinking that vultures most likely made most of their nests in the city
Just making sure everyone knows that “husks” have less than no evidence of existing, and it’s at least possible stuff still lives in the city

rain world ending in a nutshell: large worms mercilessly shove a slug cat into a tree
Now arriving at Blargho Rain World station 🚉
I can explained the ending. Which has parallels to actual reality. The concept is memory itself is connected like a loop.. when you die.. infinity means your guaranteed to manifest once more, the conditions for your existence and memory are guaranteed to happen again at some point.. The void fluid represents a quantum breakdown from the physical realm and laws that guide our universe, with quantum parasites tearing you down to a quantum level, allowing one to be reborn(this is represented by the violent tearing and strings(cough string theory) before you become sperm heading towards rebirth). That's my take.. I'd be contemplating the nature of reality before rainworld but I never considered the idea of memory re-manifesting.. I believe your more likely to naturally re-manifest without memory long after our universe dissipates. Black holes essentially act like the void fluid and will eventually break down the entire universe we live in.
For memory to re-manifest.. there would have to be a structure and dimensions even deeper than quantum particles, you could only transfer to a place where having those memories made logical sense, was within the realm of possibility and even if those conditions were met still very very unlikely to end up in a similar place. This doesn't apply to regular re-manifestation..Since your most likely to exist only in similar circumstances that created you... we are born without memory, which in itself develops as an intangible concept created by the mind. In other words consciousness transfers but everything else is lost, which is probably a good thing considering the existential nightmare it created for the ancients and the iterators.
4:35 How did you get Neil Gaiman to narrate this for you?? lmao
Caraca
Eu nunca iria imaginar que essa é a história!!
É muito complexo!
Eu acho que isso acaba sendo um pouco um ponto negativo do jogo, porque é simplesmente impossível de chegar nessas conclusões sozinho.
I agree, the lore is WAY too obscure, there is simply no way I could have found all this stuff by myself...
I think there is something really sinister about the void fluid. Something just seems really wrong about it. Massive eldritch vibes, especially the dragon.
I think it eats away at the world constantly, until all is dissolved away into the void. I’m pretty sure it’s god or something idk
LTTM: "Stop or I will die!"
Isn't that what you're after though?...
The depths I get it
honestly this guy could voice an ancient
To truly die is to be forgotten
Fuck, finally I understand this.
Huh it seems you changed “planet” to “realm” when it is literally called a planet by Joar, also if it was flat like the redditor said then there would be no gravity.
Huh? Literally no one is suggesting it's flat? What are you on
(also, if it *was* flat then it would have gravity through whatever are the rules of this fictional universe)
Lol... shade thrown at grammar nazis in the beginning. 🤣 (I can fully appreciate this, as I am a self admitted Grammar Nerd.)
