    I think you need to get one of those tiny pull behinds just for your crafting stuff. You can pull it behind your little camper like they do with motorcycles. 😂

    You were the first flosstuber I watched, I started Carolyn Manning’s beachcomber after seeing yours. I now have my own flosstube where you can see my progress on it! We are FT in our RV, hubby is retired Army. Safe and happy travels, maybe we will be at the same place sometime. We’re currently at AF Academy in Colorado Springs, they have a wonder fam camp here we come every year. Great video!

    I have had to pack away my stuff to live in a fifth wheel for 3 years.
    I learned a lesson. Pick your favorites that are calling to you, pack all the rest up. Then go through your favorites and pick your two. Then take your favorites and put into a plastic see through container. Put it into your storage unit last so when you finish a project and have the opportunity to go to your storage unit you can pull a couple of more out. You may want to consider a set of scroll rods that would fit on a lap frame. Be boxed and sitting on top of your tub. That way if you figure out you have room you could grab it at the same time.
    Your WIPS are beautiful. I am getting all sorts of ideas.

    My daughter had a great idea: (old school idea): have a photo album of your FFOs since your camper might not have wall space for your beautiful stitching. Would also be a good idea for keeping track of your WIPS in storage. Of course, this is all 'old school', but any modern ways of keeping track and enjoying your stitches. I realize that you have, at least, your WIPS on your tablet/computer, but sometimes, photos are really nice. Have a great rest of the weekend, and 'happy packing'!

      That is actually a kind of fun idea. Not sure I’ll have time to print out photos, unfortunately, but we’ll see. Maybe of my most prized ones!

    I think you should take The Rose And The Giant Pear since you are enjoying it so much. It is small and doable and would give you comfort. Then I would suggest you take several of your large pieces, to work on when you feel inspired, and to give you some mental stimulation. And then I would include at least one classic sampler, one that speaks to you and Mike of your fabulous journey together. That should keep your needle busy!❤

    Do you know, since you’ve settled down in the house I haven’t seen you as exuberant and full of joy as you used to be whilst on the road. Good luck with this full-time adventure and I’m hoping it will bring you both peace and calm and happiness.

    You should reach out to Julie (Kansas City Girl in a Colorado World). She recently began the “tumbleweed” lifestyle and is living out of her RV… she went through and showed how she stored her stitching stuff… she and now you are getting me to start considering renovating my vintage camper and start traveling… but my carefully curated collection of fabric, floss, charts and accoutrement is rather daunting!! When I saw the title to your video, I thought, nah, they are not moving again! They are settled! Best wishes as you start this new chapter of your lives!!!

    What a wonderful adventure for you and Mike.( Happy retirement Mike.). Jan, I don’t know how you’re ever going to choose what to take with you to stitch?! My husband retires this November. We're making plans for next year to drive and take the train to see western Canada starting from Ontario where we live. Two months though, not two years. How blessed are we to be able to just take off and enjoy these beautiful places...with an open return…and still be able to stitch?! Take lots of pictures, Jan, or do drawings for cross stitching pattern design inspiration. Wishing you both good health, safe travels, and lots and lots of enjoyment!🤗❤

    It would be so hard to choose just a few projects! Just make sure that the boxes with all your WIPs are easily accessible so that when you go to your storage place you can trade out. Congrats to Mike on his coming retirement. Looking forward to all the pics and videos of your travels.

    Wow - a lot of WIPS! One thing I learned when I started stitching was if I loved a chart enough to stitch, I needed to kit it and not stockpile charts. So, I have a lot of kitted projects - not yet WIPs - but eventually. If I don't love a chart enough to kit it, then I let it go - usually I gift to a fellow stitcher. And, our taste in charts changes over time so if you pull out a WIP and aren't in love with it, consider letting it go. Helen D said she gave herself permission to use some of what she had stitched and turn it into something else (like a small standup or pin cushion) and then just let the rest go. I now do the same. I wish you many blessings on this next journey in your life.

    We were campers and know of people who did what you are doing. I feel for you. We thought about it but it is a different life. Good thing crosstitch is pretty compact. I do envy the traveling you are going to get to do. I never got to or not will I ever get to do that kind of traveling. I have found my crafting has taken different turns in my life. Since my husband passed away I have been able to do everything all I want. I enjoy it of course but it is bittersweet more than you can know. I had a great husband. I am very blessed and I try to remember that.

    I wish we could have an actual conversation about moving. Since 2002 I have bought and sold 9 houses. Being a 9/11 family I was single until until 2017 when I finally remarried. We immediately bought a bigger house but have since sold that and are on our second house and I'm ready to go again so don't feel bad about moving. We have to go where life takes us especially now that we are senior citizens. Something tells me that you guys should RV it full-time until you're ready to make a permanent move to another country. Take more than two projects to work on. I don't want you to have regrets when you're on the road. Take Winter Rose Manor as one choice. It's a gorgeous piece. Happy Trails to you.

    I did a 6-month cross Canada trip. In that time, I completed 4 cross stitches (and a whole bunch of knitting & crochet). I'm not sure if you are planning to land "home" during your travels, but I would be tempted to take more than less. A few "quick hits" and a few longer projects. You could also select a few others and leave them with a friend/relative to mail to you if you finish what you've got and need more to work on. So excited for you for your new adventure. I hope you plan to do some RV life videos, too!

    • @JanHicksCreates
      @JanHicksCreates  Рік тому +1

      Well, the main thing I will be stitching will be the models for my designs, so I don’t even know if the WIPs will get touched, but I want to have a couple just in case! And yes, I will definitely be doing some RV life videos. We have a separate channel, called Sunsets and Sangrias, that we started when we moved to Hawaii. We didn’t do a whole lot on it, but we plan on reviving that and using it to post about our life on the road.

    Jan, my eyebrows shot up to my hairline when you announced what you guys are doing. You are putting a whole new meaning to Cross Stitch Camp! Seriously, sounds fun.
    Hard choices. I cannot get that bell pull out of my mind--an heirloom type piece, so take that. Take pieces you are stitching with friends, to help you stay connected. A seasonal piece, and a destination piece (or two), and a small. I would love to see you doing UA-cams about camping and what you are working on. How do you cook? Set up camp site? How you can manage to stitch while on the road. You be the guinea pig for those of us who are thinking about going on the road, too!

    I would suggest that you take with you 1 box/bin of WIPs so so can have a selection of projects to choose from. Said box can stay in an under bench storage in your trailer together with your designing stuff. Can also be stored in the boot of your car so it's not in your trailer and just have a current wip in hand for your travel stitching. As soon as one project is finished, then you can choose another one. How about that? Stay safe Jan 💕

    Hi, new to watching you. I’m just getting back to cross stitch. I commented on your FB page, earlier. It was a bit crazy to watch this as my first video 😂. Then I watched you and Maria, because I had ordered a bag….. 😍. And now I have binge watched your beginning series of 12 starting to cross stitch. THANK YOU, I loved them, and learned lots, and am not nearly so nervous about embarking on this hobby again. I have questions 😅. And I know I will be checking back on some of the videos… but…
    1. Do you not do anything to the edges of the fabric before you begin stitching????? Why or why not?
    2. If you use a hoop or Q snap, do you remove it each time you stop stitching???? I learned on a hoop, but want to try in hand when I get braver😏.
    3. It appears you keep your floss in hanks in long plastic bags, have you ever wound them on bobbins or use floss drops? Why or why not?
    4……. I’ll stop now……
    I’d be ever so grateful if you have a moment to answer…I know you are packing etc. I can’t really imagine doing what you are planning…..maybe because I’m 80 now or a because I’m alone😮
    My shop just got your new flag pattern…she is holding one for me til I can get there to select fabric and flosses…I am so excited…I think it is one of the coolest flag designs I’ve ever seen 🇺🇸💛. And I got my bag from Maria, so the flag will christen the bag……so beautiful.
    PS. You and Maria talked about ‘thread beds’..so I asked her to make me one 🥰. If you have one, I must need one 🤣🤦🏼‍♀️

    • @JanHicksCreates
      @JanHicksCreates  Рік тому

      Hi Peg! First of all, welcome back to cross stitch and welcome to my little corner of Flosstube! If you continue to watch more of my videos, you will see that over the past 5 years, I’ve done a lot of moving, hence have a lot of these crazy announcements. Lol. I am glad you found my beginning series useful! Now for your questions.
      1. No, I don’t usually do anything to the edges, unless it’s a really big project, and then I might sew a zigzag around the edges. The reason I don’t is because I’m too impatient to get started stitching. Lol. But also, even though there is some fraying that happens, I don’t find it to be enough to annoy me usually. If it does get annoying, I pull out the fraying threads. I have found that if you pull out all of the shorter threads, and get down to where there are the threads the length of the fabric, that helps to eliminate the fraying. Hope that makes sense.
      2. I don’t usually use a hoop or Qsnap, since I do stitch in hand for the most part. If I use one of those, usually on my larger projects, I try to loosen up the fabric so it’s not pulled taut when I’m done stitching.
      3. Floss storage - I don’t use bobbins. I don’t want to take the time to wind them. For some projects, I will cut off lengths and put the lengths on floss drops. But again, I don’t like to waste time on all of that prep. I think I usually do that on larger projects that call for DMC. But for the most part, I leave the floss on their tags if it’s overdyed floss, and use thread beds to arrange lengths to use while I’m stitching. If it’s DMC, depending on how big the project, I may pull out skeins from my master set or lengths and put them on a thread bed. I also no longer am using those long bags to store my thread. I have my DMC in drawers (much easier to access) and my overdyed floss on rings. I think I showed the drawers I am using for my DMC in a video not too long ago.
      I think I need to show all of these things that you asked about in a video at some point! Great questions! And thanks for the compliment on the flag design! Many must agree with you, it’s flying off shelves in stores!
