    I really appreciate the fact that you recommend (and don't recommend) certain vehicles based on your personal experience as a mechanic and not on just simple "research" like so many others do.
    This adds a lot of credibility to your channel.

    Nice 👍 I still have my 2006 Elantra w/5 speed manual transmission and it’s been a reliable car. It’s my daily commuter and I do all the maintenance myself. The only issue I had around 175K miles was a bad front brake caliper. End up replacing both calipers and rotors along with a complete brake flush. 225K miles later, she still getting me from point A to Z 😁

    I own a 2009 Hyundai Elantra. It has 275k miles, I put on 100k since I purchased it and its still going. Evap has gone bad recently. But other than that and other regular wear items it's been very reliable.

    • @infiniti_chik1225
      @infiniti_chik1225 4 роки тому +11

      @@claycoates5056 Well, even if you maintain the car and used only genuine manufacturer parts, those parts can sometimes be 'defective' and it may not be obvious - initially. If you put that brand new part on your car not knowing that it is defective and the part breaks, as in a timing belt, then what??? So, I agree with the comment from happystar1000.

      Sea Gull they make interference engines because they’re more efficient. Get rid of emission regulations and manufacturers would be more open to making non-interference engines.

    The 5th gen Elantra was for the model years 2011-2016. The 6th gen Elantra, starting as a 2017 model, was offered to the North American market in January 2016. The main bearing issue in the 5th gen Elantra was supposedly an oil starvation issue caused by the use of aftermarket oil filters. If you have a 2011 or newer Elantra, always use Hyundai/Kia brand oil filters, or aftermarket oil filters that have the same design as the OEM oil filter.

    100% on the money with this video!
    170,000 miles on my 07 Elantra and virtually nothing has ever needed work outside of routine maintenance, which I’ve learned to do myself because it’s so simple. I think the only thing that’s ever gone bad was the O2 sensor, which took me all of 10 minutes to replace 🤣
    I even let my friend use it for a 5,000 mile road trip because I trust it so much
    I’ve actually done an amortized cost analysis of routine maintenance expenses for my car. Excluding purchase price, insurance, registration, and gas, the car has cost me roughly $30 per 1,000 miles. Ridiculously cheap and easy car to own

    I have a 2007 Elantra I bought in 2008 with 20K miles. The best car I have ever owned. Handles like a go cart, decent acceleration, and still gets 36mpg on highway trips. I bought mine Cert preowned and got 4 years of oil changes. After that I switched to Full Synthetic Mobile 1 oil and Mobile One extended filters and have had ZERO problems. I have replaced batteries a few times and tires/brakes. I did the timing belt and water pump at 100K miles and the belt was still in good shape but the water pump seemed worn. I replaced it with all OEM Hyundai parts and it cost $550 for a shop to do it including the parts. Everything still works except the passenger mirror light, every other button works like normal. My sunroof opens like it did back in 2008 and doesn't leak. I even added a tow hitch and can tow up to 1500 pounds. I tow a 4 x 8 trailer to take garbage to the county dump. I have mostly owned sports cars until I bought this and I miss my new Corvettes and Formulas and RX-7 and Viper but if I have to have just 1 car, the Elantra is a decent choice. ( I used to make great $ in the 90's but not anymore ) Mine still looks like a 3 or 4 year old car on the inside after 121,000 miles. These are actually really good cars.

    Speaking of reliable cars, my Wife purchased a brand new VW New Beetle GLS in June 2004. We still own this car and it has 94,000 original miles on it. We have maintained all required maintenance to include replacement of timing belt, serpentine belt, water pump and pulleys, A/T fluid and filter, and a couple of batteries. Many previous Beetle owner's complained of their cars. However, this car has been a really good car. It has never left us stranded. My wife bought a new 2018 Subaru Forester Premium in October 2017. However, we decided to keep the Beetle because it ran perfectly. Also, I did replace the shocks and struts with new Bilstein products. The ride is much improved.

    This man speaks the truth. I had a 2007 Kia Rio (same bones) that I picked up for 500 bucks with 168000 miles. With some charging system upgrades (new battery & batt. cables, new alternator), emissions components upgrades (evap canister purge valve/solenoid--replacing it made the check engine light go away and not come back), and one passenger side ball joint...sounds like a lot, but the cost of these parts were kept only at parts prices because with the help of videos like these, I did all the labor myself! The power steering went out, one day I lost all my fluid and any fluid I tried to put back in would end up on the street. But the car is so light, power steering was not needed.
    The previous owner had a new clutch installed in January of 2018, approx. 6 months before I bought it, so that is probably going to outlast the car's life as a whole! Speaking of a clutch, the added benefit of a manual transmission will only make it last longer.
    Sadly, after 2 years of ownership, I needed more room to haul my kids and all my gear around, so I sold it for 800 bucks at 199000 miles, just a couple weeks ago. So I didnt own it for long, but I was damn impressed--Hyundai/Kia were not known for quality & longevity but ya gotta respect how much they've improved. The new owner (friend of mine) has tipped the odometer well over 200k and said his only complaint is the lack of power steering. 😆
    Long read, thank you for staying with me if you got this far. And thank you @ratchetsandwrenches for your help.

In 2005, I bought a new Hyundai Elantra GT and I still have it today with near 215,000. Both cars were and are very reliable for me. I have maintained them over the years and replaced essential parts before they wore out which I credit for the longevity. To sum it up, I have certainly gotten my money's worth out of these vehicles and I have nothing but good things to say about Hyundai. Most of them are imported used from the US, Canada, KSA and UAE
    When I was young there were Toyotas only, you rarely see another make, but when the economy fell down people started looking for cheaper cars, and nothing is cheap and reliable more than a used Hyundai, when 2007 Corolla was 10k$, 2007 Elantra was 7k$ only and maybe less with more features like sunroof and back camera, now there are lots of used japanese cars that were converted to LHD that are cheaper and they are Toyotas, so I bought one, a 2006 Toyota Noah, basically a more boxy Sienna with a 2.0 I4

Maybe I will fix it and run to 400k.Bought it in 2005 with 110k.Has been my dd since.

    I bought a 2004 Elantra brand new and I botched the first oil change. All the oil leaked out on the highway from the oil filter seal, but I caught it in time before driving too far. This car is still on the road with a second driver with 150k+ miles. During my ownership an oxygen sensor and an alternator was all it needed.

    I like how you actually make certain years more clear than others to let people know what exactly to buy and stay away from. Some people on UA-cam don't give us enough information to explain their points and classify all cars as the same. I think someone named Scotty does that 🤔

    The sonatas are really good cars too. the 09-10 sonatas with the lambda ii V6s are reliable as hell and surprisingly quick. I've absolutely embarrassed some SN95 mustangs and boosted econoboxes. Timing chain, non-interference design, decent gas mileage, cheap to buy and insure, and nobody looks at it at says "oh, I bet that thing's way faster than a mid-size family sedan has any reason to be."

    Owned three Hyundai’s over the tears. One of the first ones was a good cheap car until it had a major engine fail at 100,000 miles. May seem affordable until you finally realize that these cars will torture by just being uncomfortable for 5 to 10 years, then major issues. Road noise in my new Sonata rear seat was so loud, I would consider wearing ear plugs for health reasons for long freeway trips. New engine seemed like it was starting to rattle apart after only three years. Could not wait to give it back to the dealer after my three year lease...NEVER again. You would have to pay me a lot to force me to even ride in one regularly.

    • @robmalcolm8042
      @robmalcolm8042 4 роки тому +2

      You must of had a lemon. Many elantras (I will never talk about a sonata) hit high mileage and even two hit a million miles. My 05 elantra is perfectly fine and is comfortable. And it's 15 year old hyundai and is perfectly fine still. Mines is at that mark and the engine is fine and you even hear him mention a older year with higher mileage

    • @robmalcolm8042
      @robmalcolm8042 4 роки тому +2

      @Keith Ansell the only ones that are "junk" are made in america since the hyundai factory had a issue with making the engines. Mines is made in korea with the beta 2.0 bulletproof engine. If you know which hyundai you are getting then it's not a issue if your oblivious and just get any old hyundai then that is going to happen if you get a Honda or Toyota that had a bad year you will get problems too that literally goes for any brand

    I had a 09 Elantra Touring Wagon. It was a really great car. The only problem I ever had was a couple of poor quality trim pieces; interior door handle chrome peeling off (this was covered under safety recall due to people slicing their hands!) and the black plastic roof channel trim peeling off. All other aspects of the car were phenomenal.

    I had a 2014 Elantra. I have really mixed views on it. I drove it cross-country several times and it never failed me.
    It was great on gas, easy to maneuver and park, and was surprisingly large on the inside. And it came with all the gizmos - Bluetooth, satellite radio, backup camera and all of it worked.
    But it was cheaply built. The suspension crashed on potholes. It had carbon buildup. No power going uphill. And while it had a lot of infotainment gizmos, everything was bargain basement. You could barely hear the radio or Bluetooth phone at highway speeds because road noise was so loud. The paint started going. Interior pieces felt flimsy.
    It was what it was - a cheap economy car.

    I just bought a 2013 Elantra with ticking noise. I got 2 days left to my 30 days warranty .
    I sent the dealer I bought it from an email describing the ticking and what it may turn out to be today and that I would like it looked at. Then I called him. He said he is with a customer and will call me back in a half hour, a half hour ago. Thats why I sent an email thru his website describing the problem and I took screen shots for my proof that I contacted him before the thirty days is up. I hope that is enough to keep me in the warranty since I contacted him 2 days before. This is not gonna be fun. Thanks for Info

      The short answer is no, long answer is maybe.
      Hyundai/KIA put an expensive but largely unnecessary maintenance called "valve clearance adjustment" at around 70K miles, most people skip it because it's very expensive (four digit territory), but guess what, they ain't gonna honor the 100K warranty if you don't do it. Here's the thing, most modern car engine doesn't need such adjustment even at 200K let along 70K miles and I doubt if Hyundai/KIA dealers actually do anything about the engine if you pay for the maintenance, It's really just an fordced extended warranty.

      I've heard Kia is more lenient with their warranty than Hyundai. Maybe that's just the Phoenix area dealers though although I also the buying process is a pain but once it's done you have a decent car. I bought a used Kia at a Nissan dealer so I can't really comment on Kia dealerships too much. I'd recommend finding the Kia equivalent of whatever Hyundai you are looking for and going with that, Kias in my opinion look better anyways.

    I had a 2004 Elantra GT with a five speed for seven years. Bought it with 40k miles and so cheap I basically drove it for free for those seven years. I sold it four years ago and many daysI still miss it. That said, not quite as bulletproof as a Honda. I had to replace the radiator once; also lost a clutch master cylinder and a charcoal canister (a tough one to get diagnosed). The paint / sheet metal was not very durable. And yes, I did at least one routine timing belt; the rated service interval on the belt is 5/60k I believe. I still loved that car and I'd have no problem owning another Hyundai.

    The most reliable car ive ever had, was also the only american car ive ever had, I worked for a limousine company that had a fleet of last generation lincoln town cars, we would drive those cars around the clock almost 24/7, across states, in traffic, on highways, do the cheapest oil changes at wash & lube places, cheapest gas we could find, and those cars were sold after hitting around 850,000 miles, with the original engine and transmission, so I bought 1 with 220,000 miles, from a different company, and drove it for uber/lyft, until it had 274,000 miles, and sold it because I decided to get a normal csr to commute, because the lincoln was super reliable, and super comfortable, but it has horrible fuel economy on local roads, but on the highway I was able to hit 26mpg, on local roads it was as bad as a v8 jeep, the 4.6l modular v8 I believe it was so reliable on those cars because the rev limiter kicks in at around 5500 rpms, but on the crown victorias specially the police package ones, its higher, giving it more performance, but at a cost of some reliability

      Mind you, most of the cars ive owned, and still own are toyotas, hondas and acuras, ive had a 4cyl toyota celica 1.8 with bad transmission, 1997 celica 2.2 super reliable, 1995 4runner sr5 super neglected, just leaked oil from everywhere it was super solid, and reliable, the transmissions on those things are bullet proof, paid a mechanic to fix it, he scammed me, so I sold it, 1998 v6 honda accord with bad transmission, and a 1997 acura CL3.0 super reliable, 2001 acura TL 3.2 super reliable, now I have a 2009 corolla, super reliable so far, and a 2003 civic manual that was very neglected, and im in the process of restoring it, mechanically and cosmetically, I dont need 2 cars, just wanted to have a project, and save a stick shift civic from being junked, so I may sell either car when I finish the civic
