- In this video I am going to give a review of my top 10 picks for the best and most reliable used car you can buy for less than $5000. I will also tell you known issues or whether or not these cars have any minor mechanical issues with their engines, transmissions, timing chains, head gaskets, tensioners or other drive train component. Some of these cars you can buy for under $3000 but mostly will fall between under $4000 and the $5000 range.

Sometimes you don't want some mouthy motormouth excitedly gushing over nonsense. Sometimes you want a confident quiet, even boring guy, slowly and reasonably explaining something. I don't know how many videos I went through looking for this guy. Thanks.

I've owned a Grand Marquis for thirty years and your assessment is perfect. They are exemplary cars, excellent reliability. Other common problems are associated with the front tie rod ends, ball joints and air conditioner compressor. However, everything you noted are primary problems, the pre-2000 manifolds and cat converters were exactly what I'd experienced in my 1992. Almost all of the five GM's I've owned were driven around 250K. The transmissions and hardware were very durable. These cars are a good value, dependable.

Yeah, I have 2001 corolla and the rings eat the oil like crazy, I put 2 quarts a month in it, but it runs smooth.
I can vouch for the Grand Marquis. My 99 was super reliable. Even after an accident to the front end (other person ran a red light and I basically t boned them), it still ran. I loved that car.
'97 Avalon, bought used, original engine and transmission, never worked on except brakes and struts, replaced battery a few times, 367,000 miles and driven by various high school and college students, one front end collision, half-assed LA body shop repair (college student let the LA body shop have the insurance money w/o full repair, now I have the perpetual airbag red light).
The most reliable, smoothest car I have ever had. I couldn't get a replacement for under $5,000 but I couldn't sell it for $500, tires cost more, I am keeping it until the body instruments, switches, and ICs fail completely
Good to hear since my daily driver is a '98 LS400. Been driving it for almost 20 years and still love the car. So far, 4 people have approached me in parking lots asking whether it might be for sale! That NEVER happened to me when I had M-Bs, of course. In fact, I bought it because an M-B master tech told me that he thought the car was very impressive.

Love my 2000 Lexus LS 400 with every single option, I bought 14 years ago with 27K miles, from the original owner. Still going strong and has been absolutely BULLETPROOF in terms of reliability. It has about 196K miles now. Best car I have ever owned in EVERY SINGLE WAY! Mine is an EXTREMELY RARE model that has the optional AIR SUSPENSION (less than 1% of the cars were equipped with this back during 1998-2000).
Even the new LS 460 does not come close to it in terms of its PURE RIDE COMFORT, QUIETNESS and overall EFFORTLESS SILKINESS of the way it drives. I can take a 500 mile trip and not even feel a bit tired. That's how effortless and smooth the vehicle is. The seats feel like your comfy couch in your lounge! Sadly, Lexus DOESN'T MAKE CARS LIKE THAT ANYMORE!!!
Needless to say, this vehicle is going with me to my grave!!!!!

@@msmith53 I call BS. Camry should be on there for every body style ever produced. An 02-06 Camry 4 cylinder is one of the best cars ever produced. EVER. They would fall into that price range. This list is really, really bad. I wouldn't have necessarily put Honda up there though. Far too many transmission problems 98 and up, however if you could find a decent 94-97 Accord(which is well under 5k) they are bullet proof and should certainly be on a top ten list of cars under 5k. Seriously, this list is so bad.

The 2000 - 2001 Maxima (5th gen) actually makes closer to 222 HP. In 2002, the Maxima was updated and got the 3.5 V6. I have an 2003 and it's been good to me so far, great on highways and good on gas. Only major things I had to replace were the 2 camshaft sensors and the crankshaft sensor. Apparently there was a recall for these, but I purchased my car long after the recall period.
Also, Nissan didn't introduce the CVT in the Maxima until 2007.

kind of biased there. i think at least the crown victoria deserves a spot. that's a car that's made to be abused. the private taxi service near me just sold a lincoln town car that had 550k miles (basically the same thing as the crown victoria).

Not to mention various Volvo clubs with high millage cars on the odometer, and parts are very reasonably priced and Volvos designed well for repairs(unlike some Audi)

Renault and Ghosn were not involved in Nissan until late 1999. Prior to 2000 Nissan was a top quality product, after Ghosn and Renault they became garbage.

My brother has 417K miles on his 2007 Elantra with 5sp manual. Maintenance costs have been minimal. The key is that he drives like an old lady, and pays attention to the belt and oil.
I have a 2004 Elantra 5 spd bought new for $12,500 after rebate. Most trouble free car I ever owned. It only has 48K miles and I'm thinking about replacing the timing belt after 14 yrs of trusty service. It does a good job of the salty winter driving.
For most cars that's the dual keys of utter reliability: regular maintenance and not driving like an ass. Either one cuts the length of life.
My 05 camry goes strong at 307k miles. I redline it and floor it all the time and go through brakes and front tires. I've had it floored on the interstate for like a minute and a half where the speedo was stuck at 122 where fuel cuts off.

For every one excellent Elantras, there are 20 that make the lemon list for blown head gaskets, bad A/C and other reasons. Ill stick with Toyota from here on.

I am so glad to know that I own the 2nd most reliable car. I bought an '03 Corolla in' 06 with 35k miles. It rolled over to 160k this week after 15 years. I absolutely love this car. I haven't had any large repairs except the window assembly. I just got a transmission flush and a paint job and I'm ready for another 100k.
You are correct, I had a 96 LS400 and it was my best car I have ever owned. It was a beast. I used a box of tissues when I sold it

Sir - why did u sell your LS400?
I have a 1993 lexus sc400 non interference engine 118k and a 2002 lexus ls430. Vvti, 115k. This engine can be an interference engine at higher speeds. Both are quite smooth running engines. If you can own an example of one of these cars, at a decent price don’t hesitate. I’d rather owned one of these vehicles used than a lot of others new
2000 to 2005 impala is my favorite I had to get one glad to see it on this list.
I don't understand this recommendation, my 2000 Monte Carlo, same thing as the Impala, nickel and dimed me over $5,000 in parts alone in the past 3 years. I maintained it and only had highway miles on it.

Well, they are also on nr 1, because Lexus is the lexure car of Toyota.
with is to me a bit odd as there is some engines they made that is good but most are not as that durable as like say mercedes or volvo (with holds the record for longest mileage on one and same engine)

I can recommend the A4 B5 1.9TDI Quattro as well, and as i own one myself with 460.000km on it i can tell you that the biggest problem is rust at carrying parts.
My 2004 Toyota Prius cost $4000 and has been amazing. I was afraid of the battery going bad but the whole car has been flawless! I have put 50000 miles on it since buying it, it has needed tires and oil. Every feature works and being a 2004 still gets 50-55 MPG.
I have a 1998 Mercury Grand Marquis ... You are so right when adding these to your list ... They are great running cars that seems to last forever.
That is nice to know about the older models and the owners should be looking for vehicles which use timing chains in them, rather than the timing belts since they will get longer service life out of the engine like that used on the GM Saturn cars.

Civics 01-05 had terrible automatic transmissions. However if you get a manual you basically get a pretty reliable car.
@@TouMaiLife Yup, These had transmssion issues. Flares between gears that eventually resulted in transmission slippage usually around 120-140k miles, but if you have a 5 speed it will run forever. I had to stop stocking these cars on may car lot because of this, along with the 98 and up Honda Accord. Worst transmissions ever. Terrible disappointment coming from Honda.
I have a 2002 Chevy Suburban 5.3L v8 with 360k miles and still running strong. Very reliable, parts are cheap and easy to work on. It is the best vehicle I’ve ever owned.

In listing common problems with cars, I'm surprised you didn't mention the starter on the LS400. Not super common, but not extremely rare either. When they go out they're an expensive fix at a shop due to it being located on top of the transmission, under the intake manifold. That being said, still deserving of the #1 spot on your list.

They mostly live up to their reputation , but my experience with my mom’s Matrix is that there some minor defects involving rubber.
One door gasket failed really early.
An O-ring in the engine needs to be replacement for an oil leak. Intake manifold gasket needs a replacement because they compress and form a little gap over time.
Battery cable is exposed and should be greased with silicone/dielectric grease or else it will be wrecked overtime and caused bad ground faults such as automatic lockouts.
And the Matrix suffered from unintentional acceleration but weren’t covered under recall. Cause a couple fender benders but the dealer killed the power of the car to stop the surging.
18R 20R 22R 2TC 3TC the work horse engines. Many more old Pryor 1984 year engines.

I have to disagree with that Audi recommendation.
Spaghetti Also the 1st Gen CRV. they had valve burning issues Because the b20 engine for what ever reason liked to tighten the valves over time not loosen. Honda also recommended longer Intervales for valve adjustments for what ever reason. I challenge anybody to look up a first Gen CRV for sale and find one with less than 200,000 miles on it that's because they are extremely reliable mine has 260k on it and still Runs better than my 2003 corolla with 190k
I have a 2001 Audi A6 with the 2.8L engine. I've got over 210000 miles (340000km) on it and it's still going strong.
Yours isnt every one though. Old audis, when they start to fail, they can get extremely pricey.
TwoTimes 209 i totally agree with you. the only reason i don’t really care about the valve burning issue is that a used B20 head nowadays is cheaper than a mcdonald’s happy meal and just as plentiful lol. i loved my gen 1.5 CRV.

For rust belt-driven 1996-2001 Maximas, watch out for a rotted out radiator support member, which also supports the front motor mount.
That's what happened to mine. All rusted out. On the 4th gens the rear spark plug tube gaskets can leak around 100k requiring removal of the UIM and valve cover for replacement. Fortunately there is plenty of info online on fixing these vehicles and their common issues.

Bear in mind on those Impalas the 3.8 liter V-6 was optional, a 3.1 is standard and has intake manifold gasket issues as they are made of steel and tend to rust out
The 2005-2006 years of the generation II Honda CRV didn't have compressor issues like the 2002-2004 versions did. The later versions had better five speed autos instead of four speed autos.
Crazy I hear about all these issues with 2000-2004 Honda CRVs. I have a 2004 and the only issues I've ever had- battery died last summer and one of the headlights went out. So no major problems. Guess I'm just lucky haha 141,000 miles and 14 years strong!

David Jackson that’s probably because you bought the 3.4L engine model for whatever reason,the 3.8L is the really reliable one.I own one to be able to vouch for it.They’re not the same and yours is the cheaper base trim available for those years.The LS is where it’s at

After my 3800 series II had to get head gaskets replaced etc...it never was the same, running rough I got rid of my Olds 88 around 83,000 miles for having electrical and sensor, ignition switch issues... Those dang security keys lose contact, security engine kill shuts engine off, mine did it several times 65 mph on the freeway!!! I t kept killing the batteries as well!! bye bye!!!
Owned a 2002 Malibu. Roomy ride. However, it had a Phantom engine surges at idle during red lights. Dealership could not duplicate problem. Radiator & reservoir caps made of cheap plastic. Radiator pressure cap fail issues after every 3rd time I topped off coolant. Swore off GM after that one. A shame I'm forced to buy a Honda/Toyota. Now certain Hyundai models are better cars than Nissan/chevy/Chrysler. Peace.
I have a 2000 Monte Carlo with the 3.4, it has a rod knock, every cooling component has been replaced, and the vaccum system on these cars is a nightmare. Electrical is horrible. Cheap JUNK. I will say though, it hasn't left me stranded in 3 years. I got it with 140k and it now has 243k on it. Transmission won't move the car from a stop unless I manually put it into first and then shift into drive once the car is rolling sometimes. Can be very dangerous with unknowing drivers.
The BMW m44 1.9 engine gets my vote as a very reliable, very easy engine to work on, plus parts are cheap and everywhere. This engine is installed in are 1998 Z3 and it's been almost a daily driver close to twenty years now. The only weak point is the cooling system and the plastic water pump which we changed out at 100k years ago.

Nissan Maxima: 03 used a CVT? You sure?
The 2000 Maxima's engine produced 222* hp and '01 anniversary edition was 227hp.
6sp manual was available on Maximas from 02-06. 5sp manuals pre-02.
CVT were from '04-present. (Correction: CVTs were permanent and only choice from 2007+)
EMdemo CVT was introduced in 07. I had an 03 SE with an AT. Miss that car
Collin Galloway CVT only 2007+. I could have sworn the 2002-06 were a 4sp or a 5sp auto.
My 02Se is a 5spd a/t. 95-03 were good (all 4th and 5th gens). Luckily I own 3rd, 4th and 5.5gen. 03 was the last year the Maxima was made in Japan.
Chris W. I had a black '01 SE Anniversary Edition and that shit was awesome lol a few quality quirks but overall, positive memories oddly enough
still have my 02 maxima. No cvt. my 07 Altima has cvt. max has 70,000 miles. engine is spotless not a leak to be found. Best car I've ever owned. crank sensor was recalled but no problem since. Never heard of a timing chain issue.
I just couldn't put an engine with a "time bomb" timing belt interference engine on a list like this. When ford and Nissan co-engineered the Quest/Villagers they forced Nissan to change those 3 liter engines in those vans to non interference engines. Smart move.
A time bomb? Hell no! That's why you have a service interval for the timing belt. I've never owned a car with a chain and yet all my cars survived at least 100k miles. I usually sold them due to rust. My current car has a belt that has to be changed once every 80k miles. It has 190k miles on the clock and still counting. No time bombs here. You just have to maintain your car.
They're not ticking time bombs if you change your timing belt every 100k like you're supposed to.

Good video as always. I used to own a 1996 Nissan Maxima GLE. Got 280K out of it before I sold it. Like you said the engine and transmission were solid for most of the 20 yrs that I owned it (towards the end the engine got worn out). One thing thou, some of these vehicles had SEVERE rust issues (made even worse if you lived in the rust belt) . On mine, the entire bottom of the car was rotted out. That rust spread like cancer so I had to sell it cheap ($500). They also had issues with their oxygen sensors and EVAP canisters. One other note, Nissan was purchased by Peugeot around 2000. After that their quality started to drop.
No CVT was offered in the 2002-2003 Nissan Maxima. Just the 3.5.
How about best first car for a teenager? Safety and reliability in the $3,000 to $5,000 range. Not too sporty and no convertibles. Traction control, ABS, front and side air bags. Bonus for 4 cylinder non interference engine with a manual transmission.

Corrections your video, the maxima, at least in the US didn’t start using the cvt tranny til 2007. But you’re right, the 3.5 vq’s reliability was ruined by Renault. The 1995-2001 vq engines used a timing chain as well and those post Renault, Nissan-only designs (Renault officially got involved in 1999) were bulletproof.

I own a 2002 Hyundai 2.0L coupe and as you say they are sturdy cars with strong engines, however mine tends to run slightly on the cool side, the temp gauge mostly sits just below half way and only in the summer it will reach full operating temps. Is this something I need to be concerned about?

It might be old and it opens up than its rated Spec.
I would get a cheap $25-$30 obd scan tool thats shows LIVE stats. It should show ur running temp.
My 05 sentra runs at 155-161 F max. The thermostat is rated at 170 F. Pulled the Thermostat, the Spring is already weak and not closing Fully...

Lander F Vehicles are Engineered to run Optimally on a given Operating Heat. YOu might not feel much difference yet, but it may affect your MPG. I'd Replace it if I were you. The part is cheap and easy enough to replace. Plus really makes a difference during winter time.

Glad the Maxima made the list (I figured I would see it) I bought a new one 1995 and drove it 510,000 km and never had an engine failure or transmission issue. Even at that mileage it never burned a drop of oil. Replaced alternator and starter once each and belts at 400,000km. It would need an O2 sensor every few years which may have been a weekness.. but man loved that car. Sold it for $800 6 years ago to a local mechanic and his wife still driving it. Just bought my 16 year old a 2001 se 20th anniversay for $2k and hoping it is as good to him as my Maxima was to me.
Dad of the century for buying your kid a Maxima as their first car. 😂 I respect it. Hopefully they are still Ok today given all that speed and power.

C Fit I had a 96' Maxima se. Best car ever. Had 196k on it. Alternator, belts and basic wear and tear parts were the only thing I ever had to do to it. Drunk broad killed it one night. It saved my bacon. RIP. I would still have it, if that had not happened.

I had a Toyota Echo back in 2001. Nearly the same car. Drove that thing nearly 500K miles on basic maintenance. Was starting to burn oil and smoke when I finally sold it for a song. It still had the factory clutch plate, even. Great car...got 45 MPG.

My 2004 Impala has 338,000+miles right now. Proper oil changes and maintenance makes all the difference.
Mark Hetzer I know somebody who has close to 500,000 miles on his Impala. He's a mechanic and takes care of it though. Not sure if it falls into the ranges mentioned here. It probably does.

What years do you recommend for the GM 3800 series engine. I have a 1998 Buick LeSabre. Do you recommend the 2000 years or are these older years, 90's, ok too?

I agree with #2, but that's about it. Any car that has a timing belt should not be on this list. But I suppose it comes down to your point of view. If you're a mechanic and need to insure that you have timing belt jobs coming in, then definitely keep those cars on the list.

If you see this comment or if anyone else wants to comment, how do you feel about Saab's? I got my 2000 Saab 9-5 2.3t with 115K miles on it for $1,100 and have spent roughly $500 replacing the alternator, water pump, fuel pump, and ignition coil. The 9-5's standard interior is loaded with leather dual power seats, moonroof, front and rear heated seats. Honestly, Saab's seem to be the best bang for your buck because they offer all the luxuries of a BMW, Audi, or Cadillac, but don't come with the luxury car price.

Swedish cars like Saab and Volvo are great. Very reliable and often have luxurious amenities. It’s a shame Saab is no longer in production though.

I own a 97 Infiniti I30 (basically a 4th Gen Maxima) Best car I have ever owned. Engine is smooth and love the car. Audi is hit or miss youre right
I am looking at a 2005 Toyota Corolla for under $4k, but it has 163k miles on it. Assuming its been decently maintained, would you recommend it at that mileage? It should go well over 200k if its been properly maintained, right?
