Is the 2020 Ford Explorer XLT a BETTER SUV compared to the 2019 model?

- The ALL NEW Ford Explorer is here, and I am going to compare it to the outgoing Explorer. Under the hood there are big changes including a switch to the 10-speed automatic & RWD. On the inside there are a host of changes that have been done to improve your driving experience. The Ford Explorer is ALL NEW, but is it improved?

Overall I will take the 2019.
It is still there for the taking!
Same
@@RaitisRides I like the front of the old more, but the back of the new more
The 2019 Sucks Get The 2020
I still like the 2019 model, the styling and wheels are my choice. The 2020 needs to be blacked out with no chrome and dark or black wheels👌🏽
Got that right
You get get the Explorer ST! ;-)
@@JayPatel-tx1zc Explorer ST!
@@RaitisRides definitely
@@JayPatel-tx1zc Yes sir!
They changed the exhaust direction because they had incidents of exhaust fumes entering the interior, especially on the police interceptor variants.
Thanks for the info!
2020 all day, gimme rear wheel drive and an Ecoboost , no doubts
The old version is the best 😌
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this one!
Nope. The new version is superior in every way. The rear drive platform is unbeatable
I have a 2015, which is FWD. After driving a RWD for 13 years, I hate this car. I may have to think about a newer Explporer..But the prices are ridiculous now!
@@magentadeb
The rear wheel drive platform is far superior! We just got a 21 Explorer Timberline. Traded a 2017 Explorer XLT we got new...The 21 rear drive plat form is way better. I'll never go back to fwd platform.
I agree that the 2019 is better
I like the 2019 much better...I love that body style and I prefer the 7 seater option as well...
I was shopping recently for Explorers. I compared the 2019 and 2020's. I bought a 2019. Sport . I think the new generation looks cheap.
I love my 2019 limited. The EcoBoost 2.3 liter is fantastic
Thanks for sharing that input from your ownership!
Exactly!
I have a 2018 Explorer Sport black on black...would not even trade in for these new ones.
That’s what my girlfriend has and I like it looks wise a lot more over this newer one but she likes the captains chairs and needs the higher towing capacity for her trailer.
I like both Only if I can put the 2020 interior in the 2019. The 2020 looks like a recycled Ford Taurus front design
Thank you for sharing your input and perspective! I really appreciate you watching!
yeah. I love the interior of 2020 but still I prefer the 2019
totally true. Terrible design. I'll buy a jeep grand cherokee instead.
It kinda does look like a Taurus with an oversized grille lol
Loved the front end from 2016-2019, they should have kept it
Many people are saying that!
The 2015-2019 Steering Wheel Better
Bought an '18 last summer. Love the front end. Very unique. New style looks generic and similar to other makes.
@@stormchaser7992 yep
true you also feel the throttle and power which is delivered it so satisfying to hear the sound of the 2019 Ford explorer
Ford nailed the 2020 Explorer. It’s got a bold, sexy front and exterior design coupled with a subtly beautiful interior. The middle row adjustments with the outward step and the step over middle console were excellent additions. Great video!
That's a big NO on the styling imo. The 2019 looks 12 times better than the weird scrunched up 2020.
Just stinks it's FWD.
@@RaitisRides Is there any sport trim that offered it in AWD? Or RWD?
White Buffalo2019 AWD yes.😎👍🏻
I have been wanting a explorer for a long time I’m so glad I waited. Great videos dude
Great video guys love the way both explorers were showcased especially since there is alot of explorer fans out there great job. It's one of my dream SUVs for decades now and will never end.
Honestly same. I really want the 2019 limited but I’m laying off my credit cards so i can save for the Explorer 😭
Thank you for this review! The storage changes in the back of the 2020 is a definite deal-breaker for people with strollers (at least for me). So glad I watched before I head to the dealership :)
I'm definitely taking that 2019 over the 2020 😁 deals and rebates alone makes it an attractive buy tbh.
The pricing is really good right now for sure!
tambulee The drivetrain on the 2020 is much better but if looks is what matters most go 2019. I like the 2020 looks more truck like and more Ford.
The 2019 Ford Explorer Has The Incorrect Fuel Door Side
Awesome video, I just bought the 2020 XLT and agree with almost all of your comments! Thx again
Just today, I saw a couple of the new Explorers on the highway in Michigan.
I have to say: I honestly think the outgoing 2019 model looks better from the front and back.
The 2020 headlights are too big and blobby and intrude on the grille in a way that is not appealing.
And from the back, the new one looks cheap compared to the 2019.
Thank you for sharing your input and perspective! I really appreciate you watching!
Omg Raiti, you read my mind! I was staring at a 2018 Explorer today and wondering how it looked next to a new one and viola! Your video! 😄
I am so glad that I could help out with that!
Excellent job explaining both vehicles. Well done
Very detailed video with comparisons. Keep up the good work.
Thank you so much for saying that! I really appreciate you letting me share that with you!
Practical conversation “knees in my mouth” that resonates with the average consumer lol great video man keep on grinding.
I totally agree with you! Thanks for watching Michael!
Just got our 2021 Explorer xlt sport appearance package yesterday, we love it! Came from a 2015 Explorer
I’ve had this doubt too. Thanks for the video 👍🏻
You are so very welcome!
2019 hands down
I ❤ the Explorer name badge in front🎉
Awesome review of both. Thanks!
I am so glad that I can bring them to you David. Thank you for the compliment.
2019 has Sport appearance package. Small "cup holder" is for models with 4X4 dial. It does fit a red bull can perfectly.
100% 2019
I like the 2019 better but that's just my opinion
Nothing wrong with that!
The RWD platform is more fun in my opinion.
2020 dash is less cluttered, ergonomic design. I have a 2020 and excellent suspension, comfort feels like a sports car. Also the frame and suspension is the heavy duty police version. 2019 has different suspension than police version.
I would love a 2020, just don’t know I can afford it. But I took a trip in one and it was amazing.
Excellent review I’ll be waiting for the review on the 2020 Ford F 150 trucks keep it up
Thanks! They will be coming soon!
I normally don’t like dealer reviews but I thought this was really well done.
I got the 2019 red xlt with great package like sensor in the back.. Backup camera.. Leather seats.. They wanted 40k but i droped it to 30k.. After taxes and everything my finance loan was 33k 1.8 apr.. What a steal 😉
You did very well! Thanks for sharing that!
Raiti's Ride, thanks for another good one.
I am so glad that you liked this one!
That’s the longitudinal architecture of the 2020 that make a big difference in the driving experience. Because now it give first the power to the rear and when needed send it to the front wheels.
Thanks Ben for that great input!
I have a 2020 Explorer limited 2.3L, very nice.😀
White color is the best, beautiful and gorgeous.
Same! Atlas Blue with the 20” wheels added, with roof rails and cross bars!!
Great review . Where in Florida is this video done ? Do you have a video comparing the 2020 Explorer to the 2021? I would love to see a comparison of 2021 of the Explorer to the Traverse and Telliride . Keep up the great work
I have ford explorer Eddie Bauer V8 2008. It has 150k mileage and still runs great. The old models made to last🙅🏻✌🏻❤️
I prefer design of the 2019 version to the new one.
the only way I can even tell these apart is them being side by side, otherwise i cant tell the difference
Very helpful. Thank you
Very good review 👍🏼
Hey Joe! In the 2019 Explorer , that 3rd cup holder they were thinking of Big Tom for his can of Red Bull, ooh ooh 💪. Great job guys 😎👍.
LMAO! You crack me up David!
Love the new intro!
I really appreciate it! I listened to you guys and just made it short and sweet!
If you could get a good deal on a 2019 Limited for the price of the base 2020, it is worth it.
Gotta respect this mans work ethic!
That is so awesome fo you to say!
I like the old one more, too much chrome on the xlt. And I can’t believe they asked Honda to give them the passport back lights! Nice review as always Raiti!
Thanks Man! I really appreciate you always watching!
I prefer the 2020 tbh if I had to choose from the two. The 2019 looks a bit more dated imo. Overall, I just don't like Ford as a brand but I would buy one however before I buy a Chevy 😂
Good review reiti's
Thank you for saying that!
Nice Review!!! Not all explorers have the explorer badge on the hood though..I put a bug shield on mine and it enhances the look!!!
Thank you for sharing your input and perspective! I really appreciate you watching!
Love Walker Ford! Great people to work with and fair pricing. See Danny in the Sales Dept. and Denise who will help you customize your Explorer. I always had them do my service and the prices were fair, in fact, the oil changes were less expensive here than anywhere. Great service crew!
Cool just saw your testing of the 2020 xlt with the 2.3 ecoboost engine. I just worry that the 2.3 ecoboost engine isn't big enough and will have issues with the turbo and won't last as long as the v6 would?
Raiti's rides, we're filming here 🤣🤣
I am glad that I could share the laughs with you!
I have a 2018 in the same color combo as your 2020. I actually like the looks of it and some of the interior features better than the 2020. My 2018 has the 2.3L Ecoboost. Rear wheel drive isn't the greatest thing in the snowy hills where I live. The front wheel bias will be much easier to live with.
Thank you for sharing that input from your ownership!
Neither one of these Explorers can compare to a Chevy Traverse! I originally wanted a 2019 Ford Explorer, However, after driving and pricing compared to a2019 Traverse, it was an easy choice. Less $$$, Better motor, more horsepower, way more cargo space, and much more pleasurable to drive. I am a Ford guy too, but I have to call it the way I see it! Ford needs to step up their game on there 7-8 passenger SUV's......Thanks!
Love my 2017 Explorer Limited
2020 may not look as good. But it is still better in every other way
I appreciate you sharing your thoughts on this one!
I have a 2015 explorer xlt and I like it a lot. I do like the 2020 as well very nice car.
The 2020 drives really well.
Thanks for doing this video. I’m buying the 2019 😊

Thumbs up Raiti..great review.

@@RaitisRides lol..you the man Raiti.
Imo ford is one of the best companies when it comes to designing the front of a car they always do such a good job wit the front of the cars but the back ehhhh...
I like the 2020 interior 2019 exterior
To bad we can't mix and match.
Nice comparative review Joe! Can you change the camera angle when you’re driving? It looks like you’re on the high banks at Daytona Speedway lol. 👍🏻👍🏻🇺🇸
We had some camera issues!
Raiti's Rides I was hoping that was the problem.👍🏻
@@LS1007 Thanks brother!
They did that with the exhaust on the 2020 because the 2019 the fumes were managing to get in through the back (especially to the ones with police packages)
They couldn't figure anything else out?
@@RaitisRides evidently not! dont get me wrong huge ford dude but i mean... why couldnt they change that even on the older ones, even if it was in the process of being redesigned its still a massive safety thing! or change the exhaust on the older one and change the back end a little bit to avoid it and then put a regular exhaust back on or something
horrific unfinished product, especially when you consider that lower rear valance area. such a shit show over there.
The paddles on the steering wheel come in handy when going through steep hills and mountains. Downshifting is so much easier.
I love the new one, love the looks, especially the interior
I had a feeling you would like this one!
‘19 all day. I have an ‘11 XLT, love it.
I’d take a new one as long as it’s a platinum or ST. I need V6 BOOST.
I have the 2017 Explorer XLT. Exactly the same as the 19 except for a slightly different looking front bumper. The one he is reviewing is the XLT appearance package. The regular 2019 XLT, all the blacked out pieces are chrome. I'm disappointed that they dumped the V6 for the 2020 and up XLT. The V6 is only on the higher trims.
Being the new one went back to RWD and a much needed updated center stack that pretty much puts the old out to pasture. I think the 2.3 eco also makes sense with the 10 speed. Interior is better but the outgoing looks better on the outside. A lot better. What's up with that?
Thank you for sharing your input and perspective! I really appreciate you watching!
In video the 2019 looks better but I saw a new 2020 in person and it’s so much better looking
I thought all models of the 2019 had the 4x4 management system on the center console (that is where that tiny extra cup holder is).
I have the 3.5L in an Edge and it has very good low end torque. Good drive characteristics at highway speeds.
About the exhaust.
I've seen 2016/2019 explorer's with exhausts hidden.
It depends on the options
I think the tips are only for the V6 equipped.
The 4-cylinder explorer's won't have tips
I was so excited for the 2020 since it's RWD based, and the new ST sounded super cool. Unfortunately, they are not great at all. I would much rather have a 2019 Sport.
The main problem with the 2020 is that all trim levels are around 10k overpriced. But that's typical Ford so when they drop the price people think they're getting a deal. Also the 2.3 engine still has carbon issues as far as I know.
I really appreciate you sharing your thoughts and input on this one!
JB 360 Some of the 1st gen Ecoboosts had the issue with carbon buildup but by the time the 2.3 was introduced for the 2015 model year it had been addressed. Also has a lot to do with driving habits. 2.3s haven’t had any widespread issues, in fact you won’t find too many unhappy EB customers these days, until they come up with something new and unfamiliar. Now that being said.. It’ll be interesting to see how the new hybrid models hold up over time. 497 horsepower is a lot for a Lincoln so if it makes 120,000 miles without no major issues I’d be thoroughly impressed and slightly surprised. Not many 500hp SUVs can make it that long without something breaking.
Direct with also Port Injection solved that issue years ago.
@@tnitron9750 the 2.3 is only direct.
The dealerships where I live are so stubborn they don’t give you deals 😂 although yes, very very overpriced
Rear wheel drive is making a comeback? Thank you. So many myths regarding rear wheel drive about killed it.
I feel like the front head lights resemble the the last generation Taurus before it was cancelled and not in a good way. I’ll keep my 18’ explorer sport until the redesign this mess.
Very good input! Thanks for sharing!
I love my 2018 looks just like 2019 xlt with police interceptor upgraded modifications it's got luxury and hauls ass
Thanks for sharing your input and perspective!
What about the reported catbon monoxide leakage into the cabin? Is that an issue with the 2019??
Very Nice Review ❤️
Thanks for watching and letting me share it with you!
@@RaitisRides Ur welcome.. Keep on posting more videos Man🙏👌👍
Kinda wish Ford went with a totally different taillight design for the 2020 model, considering it was an all new generation.
I can see where you are coming from!
The standard ecoboost and rwd and awd sells it for me im getting one in a coupke weeks wish I could afford the st or limited but the xlt will do fine a black or blue or white
I am so glad that you like this one Don!
I was impatiently waiting to get my hands on a 2020 Explorer ST. I had first dibs at my local Ford dealership for their first ST order. After weighing the pro's and con's as well as doing the math, I decided to trade in my 2016 Explorer XLT for a 2019 Explorer Sport. Although my XLT was very nicely equipped, I opted for the Sport to give me a few more bells and whistles plus the extra HP that I didn't have in the XLT. Add to that a lower sticker price for the Sport, plus incentives and a low APR's financing through Ford. Its a win all around. My eyes wanted all the new tech of the 2020, but my pockets and common sense made the better decision IMO... By the way, this (Explorer Sport) is my 5th Explorer since 2001, my 11th Ford vehicle since 1991 and my 3rd new Ford vehicle since 2015. Make no mistake that I'm a Ford guy! LOL
Thanks for that great input! I really appreciate it!
Not a problem sir. Thank you for the ever diverse content!
How's that 2019 Ford Explorer Sport been holding up?
@@TOPBOSSJAMES I dunno.. I traded it in almost 3 years ago for an Explorer ST! LOL
Amazing review Joe I personally like the 2019 Ford Explorer XLT with the blacked out bits and more. The 2019 interior yes it looks old!🤣. The 2020 XLT very nice interior, and the exterior could have a lot more black bits. Would love to see a 2019 Ford Taurus SHO. Thanks Joe.
That Taurus may not happen.
@@RaitisRides Oh how come?
Jay Patel ford decided to not make this model anymore. Btw what happened to the 100k giveaway?
@@TheUltras88 I know that but Ford said that their gonna discontinue the sedans in 2020 not 2019. 2019 is the the last year for their sedan lineup. Thanks though for the reminder.
Great review!
Going to look at a 2020 XLT
My only issue with my last Ford's were tiny seats for 120 pound women and
wind noise from the drivers window and too stiff suspension.
You say a quiet ride?
Thanks Jim for sharing your thoughts!
2020 XLT comes with the acoustic windshield. All 2020 Explorers have LED lighting and Ford Copilot 360 Standard!
Ford’s 2020 Explorer is about 200 lbs lighter than its predecessor that's up to 36 percent torsionally stiffer, it has lower noise and vibration levels. The panel that separates the cabin from the engine compartment is dimpled keeping the interior quiet and vibration-free, It also benefits from a longer wheelbase and shorter overhangs. I have owned many vehicles from a few powerful RWD, 1 FWD, and most of all some of the best AWD rides ever but never a Ford. This ALL NEW 2020 Ford Explorer is on my very short list of what rides to buy next BUT I can't find any AWD System Facts until then I'm looking at everything but not buying anything until I know all the Facts.
btw: Ford’s previous Explorer had exhaust getting sucked into the cabin issues so that's the REAL reason they point down now.
Thanks for all that great info.
I owned the 2019 for a year and Ford replaced it under the lemon law with a 2020, which is so much nicer in my opinion. How’s he not going to mention you can fit a whole sheet of plywood in the 2020.
I am so sorry to hear about that Anthony! I appreciate you sharing that!
Its 2019 and no armrest? Im a Ford fan and im appalled!
I totally agree with you!
There is arm rest
I am referring to the back seat!
You are correct.
We had a 2018 with a bench seat and even the bench seat had no armrest, I’m a ford fan too and tbh they’re becoming some cheap overpriced crap
does the 2020 xlt trim have 3.5L and sport appearance package?
Hey Joe, any news on a Raiti's Rides license plate frame?
NOW THAT IS A GREAT IDEA!!!!!! Stay tuned!
How does rear wheel drive do in the snow?
Working on getting the 2019 sport.... rented it for a month didn't want to return it. Great vehicle 2020 just doesn't do it for me. Wish I could put the upgrades in the 2019 lol
"tasteful keyfub" lmao
My biggest probably is that they got rid of how that 3rd row seats flip and sto. Can you confirm is the storage space back there the same or smaller then the 19?
I can understand where you are coming from.
2019 is also based off the Taurus/500/Freestyle/Taurus X/ Flex platform. 2020 is all new and more truck like as the Explorer originally was since it first came out! I dont know about you but I'd prefer an SUV that is more truck than car like!
That is such an excellent point!
Love the design of the new one they did a great job IMO. Two changes I think should happen. they should offer a non turbo charged 6 cylinder and and stuff the 5 liter V8 under the hood for the ST model 😀.
I prefer the 2020 just because it brings back the RWD.
AGREED!
The 2019 Explorer XLT is equipped with Sport Appearance Package. Styling cues will be different
This is very true Dante. Good call!
I just got a new ford xlt 2020 and I am not sure when to use eco engine setting and normal setting. I am looking for the best gas millage of course.
I would use Eco for best fuel economy!
Thanks for the reply, does that apply to highway usage as well or just city?
