Tom is a legend in his own right. If your not subscribed to Tom's channel, please do. All of his videos are entertaining and you can learn things about guitar and being a session guy. But when you happen to be up at 2AM and you see Tom drop a video, THAT is where he can completely blow your mind. When he is inspired, he plays some of the most devastatingly beautiful haunting soulful guitar music I have ever heard. He is one of a kind. I have been stunned into tears more than a few times from Tom's playing. Cheers to Uncle Larry!!

I worked in a super cool antique store in Dallas in the 90’s. Billy G. Came in and hung out with me for an hour. He had a disposable camera and snapped a bunch of pictures….. 3 weeks later he sent copies to the store for me. Dude is the best. ❤

Love the yin yang of Otis and Uncle Larry’s channels. Hanging in the “garage” or around the kitchen with Tom, have a beer and talking shop but with Otis its like stepping inside for a whiskey to sit around the fire. So happy these two cats take the time to share the wisdom

I was blessed to work for encor catering and hung with Tom when he was playing with Ann wilson one of the most humble and talented cats ever! and we also cooked for ZZ top and chilled with Billy he dug the Raviolis lol! next thing ya know we talked food and pizza in Brooklyn for a half hour he is another humble layed back gifted guitarist.. really enjoyed this thank you !! tom's take on the Beatles was gold!
Joe famously played the Rocky Mountain Way riff through one of those wee Pignose practice amps. They may seem crappy but it's still my grab and go portable amp because it's absolutley no fuss or distrations. Just one knob and no phone app required. It pairs well with one of those little Zoom multistomps if you want eq and effects. The Pignose's lofi simplicity is all part of the charm - Don't knock em til you try one!

Even though I’ve see the Beatles final ( roof top ) concert a hundred times , after hearing Tom describe it I’m gonna have to watch it again immediately. Great interview even though I’m pretty sure I’ve seen it before. It’s even better the second time around IMO.

What a pleasure listening to Tom sharing his experiences. I have experienced that nirvana melding blanket of groove only once when I was playing in a Grateful Dead jam band many years ago. The self-editing process is the key. . .and putting in the time to create as opposed to waiting around for inspiration to strike. I learned this from bands like Cheap Trick, the Stones, the Stooges et al., all which have mountains of subpar unreleased material available in the trade circles, and probably a lot more that no one has heard (for a good reason).
Given the quality of the released material, it is easy for listeners to assume that every thing these bands churned out was gold, but. . .that is hardly the case.
The process I have worked out over the years is to write 50 inspired song ideas in a year, knowing that about 15 of those will turn in to songs that I am proud enough to release to the public. Some of the ideas that aren't working at that particular time might work later, in a different context. You can't force a tune that isn't ready.
With that, my success rate is about 30%. It works for me, arguably, much better than how I worked when I first started writing. I distinctly remember slaving away at songs that just weren't working, when I could have spent that energy coming up with other ideas.
The fact that the aforementioned bands managed to crank our so many great albums in such a short time is a testament to this process. . .on steroids!
. . .but that is another conversation or four.
THAT FEELING!!! Happy days when the music is being put together and if the stars are aligned you come up with that killer part ( or everyone does) .. It makes life worth living. Well said.. THIS is why well always wanna keep on making music together.
When I saw the Eagles years ago I have to say Joe owned the stage the whole night. There is something about him and his playing that just captivates everyone. It really was Joe Walsh and the Eagles.

A friend of mine took a picture at an Eagles concert a few years back. I looked at it and zoomed in and Joe Walsh was playing a PRS SE made in Indonesia. LOL It's all in the hands...And the pick. LOL

I really enjoyed this episode. It’s interesting what Tom said about the J 160e. I’m a number 1 Beatles freak also and have heard all the limitations and disparaging remarks about how “bad” the J160e is. I have one, and yes, it does not sound anything like my other “better” acoustics but, it does have that “sound” that I have had forever in my head of what I heard in all those Beatles songs, that for me, is the best acoustic sound that I compare everything else to.
Between 1969 and 1971 CCR produced fourteen consecutive Top 10 singles (many of which were double A-sides) and five consecutive Top 10 albums in the United States. They really were the biggest thing in rock and roll at Woodstock!

Tom gives me this super cool Marlon Brando from Godfather kinda vibe when he’s telling stories. Until he laughs. Then it’s this weird infectious laugh that makes you laugh with him. Great story teller with some very cool stories
I always thought they played those J160 E's because they recorded well in the studio.
Love these stories Otis! I played holes through that Tres Hombres record, staring at that spread of Mexican food.
I’ll never forget the first time I needed to buy another copy of “La Grange” and hearing how they completely f@cked up that drum break before the solo. It was like-WTF?! Back then it wasn’t easy to track down the original either.
Love the way Billy plays, but the time I went to see them, it was more about the schlick with the cars, spinning guitars, beard play-at some point they devolved into cartoon characters, which kinda sucked.

I interned at Ardent Studios in 1989. I got to know Terry Manning a little and he engineered many of those original ZZ Top tunes. He had the remixed CD shit Tom was talking about nailed to the wall. I said I complete understand what that's about. Their producer Bill Ham did that and it sounded like shit.
I believe the acoustics on Hey Jude were those same Gibsons, played through Vox amps...
I think Tom is onto something about The Beatles' recorded acoustic guitars not being the J160's with P90. I opened up my copy of The Complete Beatles Recording Sessions and found a few photos around the time Ticket to Ride was recorded. They (George, Paul & John) were holding 3 of what looks to be the same type guitar, unknown brand orchestra model with slot heads. Unfortunately there's no mention anywhere I could see of these guitars in the text, which is more like a produce/engineer's diary than what a gear head would talk about.
George Harrison a "brat?" Understandable given he had a double album's worth of songs that were met with Paul's complete indifference. One of the best songwriters in history had to compete with perhaps the two best of all time . . . in the same band!!!

Bill Ham (ZZ Top Manager) pretty much made Joe Hardy do those bad remixes with the triggered drums and all. He only gave him a week to do all of those records. Lucky for us they all got the proper treatment later.

sorry, Tom, but 'GET BACK' always interests me. and lest we forget, the Fab 4 had to put up w/ weather in the '30's, and windy. 55 years ago, Jan.30/69. having worked outside here in NE for over 30 years, I know "it's all about the wind." but 'GET BACK' (apparently the film Tom watched) was all about the visual. that footage is all digitally restored, re-mastered what have you, nobody had seen ANY of that footage in such impeccable condition since they watched the dailies for 'LET IT BE'. the barely written tunes they trudge thru were expected to sound that way. we fans anticipated Thanksgiving not for turkey, but the BEATLES. that was the day it premiered on DISNEY+. it sounds to me that you've seen 'Sympathy for the Devil' by Godard. because it's essentially the same(minus 7 hrs. but I won't complain) as far as content. most of the music in that ROLLING STONES film sucked out loud. but they hadn't banged the song into shape yet. same w/ this Fab 4 doc. I was amazed at the clarity. the boots all over YT of 'LET IT BE' clips, are all faded and really old looking. when I saw those brand new Fender amps in 'GET BACK', they looked brand new. Lennon's hair was dirty one day, and clean the next. and thanx Tom for noting how they did rise to the occasion, perform on the roof, and make an LP. I put it on when I'm at my desk/computer, and let it play. in fact, the pressure they were under was taken in stride except for George quitting the band, and having a large, dull, non-acoustic room to start the project in. they still (even Paul, whose nervous about coming up w/ 14 songs by January's end), managed to display that tried and true collective sense of humor that they always relied upon. and Billy Preston may have saved the day by dropping by to see the lads who he gigged w/ in Germany, back in '62ish. Lennon even tells him, "you don't know how great your turning up is to us. we've been sort of lost" (paraphrasing).

I can't disagree more about Paul in the movie. His arrogant disregard for George's ideas was the painful part for me. He acted like George wasn't even in the room at times. It took John to pull Paul out of the box he was in toward George. Well, anyway, it was George who called Billy Preston. The title could easily have been "How Billy Preston Saved the Beatles".
Woodstock was not a place like Symphony Hall. nobody was in love w/ their performances. CCR was pretty damn good. check out the re-issue of the WB's film w/ 'extras'. that disc contains lots of stuff that never made it into the film. JF is picky. they were outstanding, all things considered. 'keep on chooglin' rocks like hell. Rickenbackers rule. there's a rumor that he wasn't happy w/ their drummer during that gig. but Roger Daltrey said, he couldn't help but notice, while waiting, how well Creedence performed. that he was entertained by their set.
