The best thing I did after 30y of playing wss to just find the resolve notes for a key, amd then explore around it using my ears. Oz is spot on: you can just fool around as long as you resolve right. And then you start to get the feel of a root resolve, a 5th, a 3rd,a 6th etc. It becomes instinctive and it's so much fun to jam alone. Every mistake is a learning experience.
Oz’s teachings approach to “outside” playing is the only time it ever made sense to me. Hes a remarkable player but extremely musical. Masterclass on truly two very different titans having a talk. Great stuff! Thanks Papa, this is gold

Dude I literally laughed out loud when Oz was talking really complex harmony and then Tom starts explaining the lick in tablature form and Oz was like "what are you talking about???" and Tom was like "tablature" and Oz was like "Oh. I don't do tablature." LOL!!! This was an absolutely phenomenal session. It was like being behind closed doors with Luke and Obi-Wan or something.
Oz is something, bastard says, I'm not a jazz especialist ha ha ha he is a monster, always innovative and sweet. can play absolutely EVERYTHING. happy new year
I was taught that the mi7b5 chord functions as the ii chord in a minor key while the fully diminished 7 chord is really an incomplete 7b9 chord (with no root) so Bmi7b5 sounds like ii in the key of Ami while Bdim7 is an incomplete G7b9 chord (the V chord in C or Cmi). Pat Martino has a really cool lesson in Guitar Player from the 70s where he takes a full dim7 chord and lowers each tone in the chord a half step, making 4 different V 7th chords with the lowered note as the root. These guys are both beautiful.
That Pat Martino concept … take a Diminished 7th and raise any one note, you get 4 different Half-Diminished 7th chords; lower any one note, you get 4 different Dominant 7th chords. - Take any Augmented triad, raise any one note, you get 3 minor triads; lower any one note, you get 3 major triads. - SYMMETRICAL PARENTAL FORMS is the name for this awesome lesson of his!-

Uncle Larry’s playing is on another level man. No disrespect to any other player out there but little Tommy’s groove is otherworldly. It’s not even like it’s rehearsed. “Hey Tom, how about this progression?” and off the cuff you get the best solo you’ve ever heard. It’s not like it’s a fluke either. He does that shit all the time. That’s what happens when you’re willing to work hard but you’re also gifted. He’s top of my Rushmore. No doubt in my mind.
Lee burgess. He’s more like a piano player in his phrasing. He’s also knocking out melodies from non diatonic chord progressions straight from the sound in his head directly to the fretboard.
Oz is so great playing over changes. Such a hard thing to do well and he does it effortlessly. Tom isn’t afraid to learn from him despite being so great himself. Great humility.
This was an awesome lesson. Like Oz said, understanding the harmony/chord-scale relationships he's talking about take a long time to understand. That said, it's not rocket science, and it's stuff you would learn in a music degree or college program, or perhaps in some private lessons. Mastering them and blending them with your own style like Oz is a different story. I would encourage anyone interested to not be afraid!!

29:42 I'm 54 and this is exactly what I'm working on right now since I started playing once a week at a jazzy jam, I've never been a jazz player either, I started with classical guitar and then I've played rock and progressive and a bunch of other stuff but never jazz standards, so now I'm exploring exactly this, when you solo based just on the key it's like you are playing over/on top of the chords but when you play following the chords it's like you're playing inside of them, like your solo intertwines within the harmony. Cool stuff. Mixing both is cool too.
Tom's thought process around composing (he said write down, but it's in his head) a short solo, based on a unique melody he can sing as a departure from the song's actually melody...that is super helpful advice...and deceptively simple sounding...and OZ said "that is hard", because it is at the same time. It sure helps if the song is singing to you in the first place. Thanks, guys.
This is beyond gold: it's diamond! Can't thank you enough for posting this treasure. It's a masterclass in playing and, more importantly, learning and listening. Watching two accomplished musicians and players exchanging notes on harmony and melody is a damn good reminder that there's not such thing as "I know it all"!

How cool is it that Tom has zero ego in this session. Oz's harmony and depth of the knowledge is clearly more advanced than the "street theory" school Tom comes from and it’s so cool to see Tom so excited at the prospect of learning new things. Oz is obviously a serious badass. But of course so is Tom and you can see him absorbing and processing some of what Oz is doing in real time. That speaks volumes about Tom's gifts and instincts as a player. Two masters of their respective styles.
but after watching the whole thing u clearly see how oz also gets why buk is so special-the way his solos are “statements” is something oz was obviously gonna be thinking about 😉

It's always fascinating to me that you can have 2 guys like this, that are both essentially limited to the same 12 notes, yet each can approach the same progression from completely different directions and still sound completely complimentary to each other. The discussion of the concepts is great and I'm going to steal so many licks from that section, but even if the whole video was just that final jam it would've been great. Thanks for posting this and letting us all be a "fly on the wall".

49:45 @tombukovac that's been bugging me as well :D I've got a few thoughts.. ;) first of all, the diatonic 6 for the Gm (vi. chord in Bb) is a minor 6 (eb) and is conceived as an "avoid" note over the vi chord. it conveys the aeolian character, but wants to resolve DOWNwards - the chuck berry movement going upwards fights that. the major 6 leaves the key and goes to far out to fit into the chuck berry chord rhythm - so no viable option either. NOTE: when playing 1-5-6-b7 on the V chord (that is f-c-d-eb), the eb works and is not perceived as avoid note - the relation to the bass note (or chord degree/function) is everything. to keep the rhythm, over the vi chord changing from the 5th down to the fourth works, 4th to 5th works, 5th to 7th works - but you knew that already for sure. just "avoid" the avoid note. @501chorusecho #my2cts

@@BrettPapa of course buk admires oz. all the baddest nashville cats “get” Oz’s thing. i saw him in austin a few years back and beyond his incredibly original take on jazz/funk/fusion, he also “played” his pedalboard like no one id ever seen-deploying different pedals for a single bar sometimes then two more for four bars then back etc all while never skipping a beat-literally. the next night i saw him mingling in the lounge at another venue before a robben ford show and i said hello-he was gracious and cool as a cat.
Absolutely on another plain of existence. So creatively off the cuff and non stop flowing within each other’s realm of musicality. So, so, so good for the souls of humanity. Can’t thank you enough for this gem of goodness.

Those Lenny Breau harmonics are sick!!! I remember seeing Larry Coryell taking those to another level... He must have worked for a long time to get them to the point he was performing them at. Fast, smooth and seemingly without effort during live performances. You guys have inspired me to work on these "harp harmonics" again. I also prefer standard notation to "tablature"...it wasn't around when I first started learning, just never took to it. Great video full of great topics. Thanks so much for sharing!!!
I‘m a Drummer but for me it was such a pleasure to see two of my favourite guitar player talking to each other and share their secrets. For me Oz‘s rhythmical approach is so deep and fundamental, I’ve never heard this complexity of odd meters and grooveplaying on any other guitar dude

@@BrettPapa i think cory was inspired to post his whole tone vid this morning. love how oz acknowledged how hard it is to play melodic hip shit over simple diatonic progressions and he was clearly humbled in a good way when buk was soloing-oz called it making “statements” which was astute. two titans but instead of clashing, learning from each other.

49:45 @tombukovac that's been bugging me as well :D I've got a few thoughts.. ;) first of all, the diatonic 6 for the Gm (vi. chord in Bb) is a minor 6 (eb) and is conceived as an "avoid" note over the vi chord. it conveys the aeolian character, but wants to resolve DOWNwards - the chuck berry movement going upwards fights that. the major 6 leaves the key and goes to far out to fit into the chuck berry chord rhythm - so no viable option either.
NOTE: when playing 1-5-6-b7 on the V chord (that is f-c-d-eb), the eb works and is not perceived as avoid note - the relation to the bass note (or chord degree/function) is everything.
to keep the rhythm, over the vi chord changing from the 5th down to the fourth works, 4th to 5th works, 5th to 7th works - but you knew that already for sure.
just "avoid" the avoid note.

@@BrettPapa of course buk admires oz. all the baddest nashville cats “get” Oz’s thing. i saw him in austin a few years back and beyond his incredibly original take on jazz/funk/fusion, he also “played” his pedalboard like no one id ever seen-deploying different pedals for a single bar sometimes then two more for four bars then back etc all while never skipping a beat-literally.
the next night i saw him mingling in the lounge at another venue before a robben ford show and i said hello-he was gracious and cool as a cat.

Those Lenny Breau harmonics are sick!!! I remember seeing Larry Coryell taking those to another level... He must have worked for a long time to get them to the point he was performing them at. Fast, smooth and seemingly without effort during live performances. You guys have inspired me to work on these "harp harmonics" again. I also prefer standard notation to "tablature"...it wasn't around when I first started learning, just never took to it. Great video full of great topics. Thanks so much for sharing!!!

I‘m a Drummer but for me it was such a pleasure to see two of my favourite guitar player talking to each other and share their secrets. For me Oz‘s rhythmical approach is so deep and fundamental, I’ve never heard this complexity of odd meters and grooveplaying on any other guitar dude
