I'll soon be heading out on a 3 day trip backpacking around the Peak District, so I need to make sure i've got the right gear. I know the kit I take will depend a lot on the weather forecast, but it’s important that you try out any gear you have before taking it on a trip. Get to know how it works, and its limits.

I'm new to this hiking/camping lark. Never done it before, and I'm 73. Have bought all the gear and am waiting for some finer weather. I have been watching your videos for some months now, and found then very informative/ educational, and delivered in an easy to follow, especialy for us in the UK. I found the equipment reviews, with the pricing very healpfull indeed.

I've seen a lot of Lanshans set up with a pole/stick at the end to raise the guy line and hold the outer away from the inner, this should help with the sagging issue in wet weather.
The Lanny is solid in strong wind once its up, although its pretty flappy! No idea the speed I've had it out in but the past two outings has been pretty windy. Getting it up is an absolute nightmare though, but once it's up it generally is ok. Also, with the 3 season inner, it can get quite windy inside the tent. Ive got the 3 and 4 season inner, I much prefer the the 4 season for anything other than peak summer!
If i had a helm 1 and i was concerned about wind, id probably just go with the helm 1
Kinder Scout is one of those places that I would like to have a satcom of some description... it is the most evil place to nav on sometimes, especially if the cloud deck comes down or fog of any description sets in.
That's why I decided to buy a polyester tent no sag in the rain.
And I'm with you on the backpack as well, I'd rather carry an extra pound comfortably than less weight uncomfortably. At over 70 years old comfort matters.
Used my Lanshan last month for 3 weeks in NW Scotland. Coped well with all the weather thrown at it including a gale that blew in. However, this is not a mountain tent and I intentionally protected it whenever I could (pitched lower down the hill, behind stone walls, extra guy lines attached, etc). Added extra weight on the pegs with rocks too. Use common sense when deciding where to pitch it and you’ll be fine in the Peak District. Hope you have a great time!

I have no experience with the two tents you talked about but I would take the one your gut tells you to take. And I’d suggest bringing ear plugs and extra socks. Congrats on 11k subscribers. Have fun on your trip. Take care and stay safe.
Got a Garmin in reach 2 for my hikes in Carpathian Mountains where we have no signal . Wife can track location easily provided the device can see the sky as heavy wooded areas can block it . We have bears and wolves so also she has peace of mind! Just came back from Mount Athos where I was out of phone signal for a number of days - she and my sons could follow my spiritual journey too ! Great piece of kit .
It’s expensive and I couldn’t buy one but if you can afford it then all is good. Here the mobile coverage extends into forests, fells and you have a much better chance of getting a message through. The masts are very high and the system is much better than rural UK.
It depends on where you buy. Now there is no advantage in price between aliexpress and Amazon, and the footprint price on the official website is also expensive. I chose Collinsoutdoors.
Completed the WHW last week with a mate. Due to the forecast before leaving ranging from -5 to 18 dec. snow - sunburn I took my helm 2 & had to suck up the extra grams. My mate took his one tigris trekking pole tent. Originally planned 5 nights wild camp, 2 nights hotel. Night 6 around 2am at Kingshouse I had to call the RNLI to rescue my mate from his tent. Appreciate the One Tigris worked well till this point and similar to the lanshan ? Anyway your opinion of it all being a balancing act between cost, functionality & weight is spot on. But on a multi day hike you have got to be confident in the crucial parts of your kit. We improvised & learnt a lot on this adventure, that's the fun part. To throw in the towel because of something you have doubts about needs looking at. You also want a tent you can shake as much water off as possible, you want to minimise the extra weight. Any way due to my mates tent sinking he shouted the guest house in Kinlochleven, winner and in return I've bought him a rubber ring just in case it happens again 👍🏼

I spent a night in the Lakes in a Lanshan One in heavy rain. I hadn't sealed the tie-outs and they did leak in during the night. Luckily, not profusely but they definitely need doing.

I've got the same but 4 season. The little tabs for carbon poles if you don't use trekking poles. I've modded then unmodded certain things on the tent. The guys and clam cleats are perfectly fine but swapped the ram head for a z packs ram both sides. I also take 4 extra pegs and peg the inner separate to the footprint and outer. This keeps the inner less flappy. There's also a method to pitching. Once set up, loosen the side guys then pull the door guys a little more then the side guys tighten lots better and help stop the sag

I've used my Lanshan a couple of times in the rain now, one of them being heavy rain, and it never sagged like that. Yes, it gets a little more loose but never to that extent for me. I do guy it out pretty tight and have the tentioning loop up to the ridgeline so I don't know if that's making the difference.

I have the lanshan 2 and I love it. I've had it in heavy rain and winds up to 20 miles per hour. For a trekking pole tent can't beat the price.

I’ve just got back from C2C with my lanshan 2, it was great even in a night of hale and snow camping on tops above honister pass, video but I’out later today if it’s helpful, great tent for multi day , good luck on trip,
My tip
Use decent zip lock bags for med kit, poo kit, coffee, sugar sundry items, or any other items than can be put into a zip lock...if you need something fast you can see exactly what's in it & they are generally lighter than a possibles bag or similar. 👍
Did that for my SDW trip. Ziplock City in my pack.
Bacofoil ones are strong as 👍

Hi there, good vid as ever.
I’ve been on Dartmoor ridges with 30 to 40 mph winds. It was fine but some rain did get driven in under the vent flap at the top. I try and position it sideways to prevailing wind and lower the leading edge. If you have sound ground to peg into it can take a pounding. Thought about getting the 4 season inner but really it’s my may to sept tent so good enough as is.
Camped in the Lanshan 2 with a 4 season inner in weather with gusts up to 80km/h - 50mph. Very floppy, and eventually one of the trekking poles fell over, even with reinforcements on the stakes (heavy pieces of wood). Left camp early as I was scared the fabric would tear. I personally wouldn't set up camp with this tent in windy weather with anything above 40/50kmh.
I used the lanshan 2 for a 2 night stay at Grisedale tarn and then Angle tarn. Winds got up to about 25-30mph with rain and it stood up to the test no problems at all. I haven’t seam sealed any parts of mine yet either.
I tried for about an hour to pitch my Lanshan 2 in 35 mph winds before I gave up and went back to the car for my cloud up 2 (which was a breeze to put up. Pun intended).
The problem that I had (after untangling the guy lines from a previous outing 😬) was the trekking poles kept falling down. I’d get one up and the other one would fall over. It might have just been my uselessness.
Anyway, I’ve bought a helm 1 now and even though it’s a tad heavier I think that it will become my go to tent for future solo trips.

That's the best pillow in the world. The Zenbivy soft top pillow is a very close second.

Have a Lanshan 2 pro which I seam sealed using the correct stuff. Hasn’t leaked and have pitched in some exposed areas. Like any tent, correct pegging and even taking the time to put rocks on top of pegs is important.
I changed the guy line configuration for both door ends as per other videos.
Can be a bit flappy, however the space is great for one person.
I haven’t noticed any condensation with the tent.
For peace of mind, I’d take the Helm 1. Solid and fly lower to the ground. But you know me and the Helm! Will never be prized out of my hands!
Id say take the lanshan i done the coast to coast with this tent was in 40mph winds on ennerdale water didnt budge,if you pitch it right your poles wont move,also had this on kinder multiple times in high winds and snow in -3 with the full mesh inner was absoulutly fine, you can also do a mod to i used bungy cord to make the inner and out closer together you get a little more room,in high wind i set mt poles to 120cm,this way the vestibules are lower ajd thenl tent isnt being windswept from underneath
Pitched my lanshan 2 in some severe weather in scotland and never had a drip, not even condensation. My only gripe is the somewhat slack inner. I had to seamseal mine but its simple and you can at least choose how well you seal yourself. A few mods and its great.

Great vid Ben, i thought hang on im sure i watched this last night but it was called something else 😂😂 take the helm mate yeh its heavier but youll have total peace of mind, ive only ever seen vids of the lanshan 2 out in moderate to strong winds and i personally would be on edge sat in it especially if it was raining as well and i had to keep getting out to adjust the guylines to keep it tort, 👍

I have the same tent and colour and made the mistake of taking it on the chalk hills of the South Downs Way last summer. Hard as hell to pitch on stony uneven ground, and I wouldn't bother in wind and rain. This is a perfect tent for a perfect lawn pitch which is , funnily enough, where you see most of these pitched on YT. For me, its a large self standing, 180x210x130 single skin dome tent which I have modified. Its under 2kg and under £80

Helm 1 all day long. Weather is unpredictable around the kinder scout area.
Hi Ben, I had my lanshan 2 Pro on a camp in Snowdonia during Easter weekend. On the last night the wind got up to 15-20 mph, gusting 30. It was hitting the end of the tent and pushing it in, so I put my bag against the inside to push it out and keep the fly off my face. It was a bit flappy, but stood up to it fine and a pair of earplugs meant I managed to get some sleep.

I get the concept of the lanshan, but the single walled ones are like sleeping in a waterfall, and like you showed the 2 wall sags loads. Very tough to ignore for ease and strength the helm1 for hiking trips mate.
Funnily enough I haven't experienced the sagging. Yes, a little bit but nothing that gets anywhere near touching the inner tent.

With the Garmin in reach, it's better to have it and not need it. Than need it and not have it. Worth the money I think.
My choice would the Lanshan, its light and will stand up surprisingly well in rough weather when pitched tight. The winds can get surprisingly strong on those tops, but you can often find a dip or lower area where it drops down, so be sure to scout out for those. For your planned hike be careful on the second half from ladybower onwards, those edges are popular and you may struggle pitching up. Depending on your phone network the peak district has surprisingly good phone coverage especially on the tops.
Hoping to pitch around burbage edge/moor for night 2 and just walk Bamford and stanage which I think are more popular 👍
@@DaleyOutdoors Sounds like a good trip! You should be ok on Bamford if its midweek and you pitch up late, used to be pretty quiet but it can get popular these days on the weekends!
I haven't heard of anyone else doing this, but when I use my sleeping bag as a quilt (it's an ancient rectangular zip around down sleeping bag) I put my sleeping pad inside a sleeping bag liner; acts like a fitted sheet and more comfortable than sleeping direct on the thermarest. Especially on warmer nights. Works for me.

I’ve taken my Lanshan 2 on a few multi day hikes …. It can take some decent winds but it does get a bit flappy so it might need retensioning … so as some others have said you need to seek a sheltered spot. However plenty of folks have done big multi day hikes in insane weather of the Cape wrath trail and the Colorado trail and their Lanshans came through with flying colors … on one of my trips I set the tent too high and a storm came through and I got splash back entering the tent as the huge droplets off the trees hit the ground … you probably won’t have that but you might have wind blown rain coming in if the tents too high … look forward to seeing your video of the hike should be epic… and even if you do have some trouble remember ‘the best memories are made in adversity!”😂 atb. I’d offer spend the money on good quality, merino wool socks.
I find hikes begin n end with good socks n feet that are in good shape.
I always go with a liner pair n merino wool pair n switch them over every few hours.
I bring an extra pair of each pair.
After bringing water I would offer good socks make a difference.
My advice would be to take a decent bivi bag to put your sleeping bag in as insurance for leaks/condensation. all but the very best tents will fail in harsh conditions to some extent, Once you have no easy escape route/car/village, its a different game. Plan for the worst (& take as many jaffa cakes as you can carry ;)

The loop is for a stick or a pole if you don't use trekking poles.
I have both the Helm 1 and Lanshan 2
I really like both of them
I would call the Helm 1 a high level storm tent for being in the Lakes or Moors
I have had it in very lousy weather and was rock solid
Could use into four seasons
And the Lanshan 2 is good for lower level better weather situations
Great in warmer weather with the poles set up 125 cm with plenty of air flow
In poorer weather the poles to 110 cm but increases condensation
Had it on the North Scottish cliff side in Durness in a May storm
Held up fine
Add two V guy lines to the top tie outs to give much more stability
Pitch it first with the corner pull outs as loose as possible so the have spare to tighten as the tent gets damp and sags
If need be move the pegs out

If only occasionally doing remote locations. You can rent GPS locators at a minimum week hire ! £ 36 / £42 !
Don’t over tighten the side pullouts as shown, that’s the cause of your wrinkles on the tent side; better to arrange a long guy line fixed from the apex at the back of the tent and through the pullout and then out to the ground to the side and front of the tent opening, like a catenary line, which will hold out the tent side, giving more space inside and preventing condensation transfer between fly and inner tent. 🖐🏻🏴
My side pull outs leaked. Initially I put some duck tape on the outside and have now siliconed the thread. I have ear plugs for the flapping tent and towards the summer months, an eye mask to stop the sun waking me at 3am. With the comments, remember that the Pro is thicker material. It will probably take everything the Peak District will throw at it during summer.
Of the two, I'd probably take the lanshan myself. They're better than you think in wind, particularly if you drop the poles a bit and slam the fly to the ground. And in low wind, you can pitch it up for better airflow. But tbh, for 3 days and 30 miles, the weight difference between it and a helm 1 alone won't be a bother. It's when you start taking a load more other random tat you won't use that weight builds up.
I havent used a satcom. I've just used buddy beacon on outdoor active with my wife so she can see my track. Issue with that is it's signal-dependant. So I'm probably gonna get either the zoleo or the new inreach messenger. Dont really need it for my own navigation, I have a hardened phone and a watch as a backup.
I’d like the extra space of the Lanshan but then I’m trying to cut down on gear. Depends on temperature too as I might not need extra layers and big coats etc by then.
@@DaleyOutdoors it's a cheesy AF saying, but I'm a big believer when hiking to "be bold, start cold".
And at camp, you'll also have a quilt as insulation you can use either in-tent or extra-tent in dry weather.
Honestly, extra clothing is the main thing I see people taking that massively increases their pack weight.
Although, I do tend to take a pub t-shirt on multi-dayers: can't put standard punters through my sweaty reek when I'm queuing for a couple of swifties. 🤣
Take some fly spray. Spray inside your tent just before you go to bed no bugs to get on your nerves while you sleep

When it comes to sag,you can extend the poles a bit more and set them at an angle. And then when it begins to sag you set them vertically and that way you lift it up a bit, tensioning and avoiding sag.
I have a question regarding the pad. How warm and comfortable is it for you? Is it warm enough for above freezing in just a base layer,like a t-shirt.
Also how does comfort compare to your Exped pad? You see,i wanted to buy the Tensor, however the price went up a bit and it's insane,i don't have that kind of money right now and God knows how long it will take to save up(I'm a student). So the Lighttour is becoming more and more appealing in my eyes.
Still, comfort is the most important to me,i have a hard time sleeping outdoors,so i could wait a bit longer and save up.
I'm planning on thru-hiking the Gr11 this summer and I'll need a good pad for that.

You definitely need smidge in The Peaks right now.

Entirely your call, just be careful you dont try to hard to justify your purchase and wonder how you ever lived without it!
If you think you're not going to be doing big mileage; then I'd personally go for the helm. Love my Lanshan, but anywhere exposed or particularly windy and it's a bit flappy; which equals crap sleep!
Helm compact is twice the weight, but is bomb proof..and if your not doing big miles, it'll go unnoticed. Hope you have a great trip whatever you chose!

I just went to France by bike relying on getting Chambres. Overdid it in England losing the route and not much sleep on the ferry so was struggling. And no phone. Never crossed my mind the phone wouldn't work. Chambee all booked up. Someone took pity on me eventually and let me stay in their aromatherapy room. Scary how cut off you are even in a town. Never going without a tent in future. Satnav would have prevented me getting into trouble. The device you've got is only any use near to friends really
It’s not just for messaging. If you use the SOS feature you can get rescued anywhere in the world.
I usually get 3g/4g on Kinder and 5g on Derwent Edge 👍 but always take my Mini2.

@@RichardShortland-Neal South edge, from Crookstone to Woolpacks I’m always OK. North edge is sometimes an issue, but i can usually make a call home. On Derwent Edge I can FaceTime.

How heavy is the Kestrel? I've got a lighter Osprey Levity, but I think if I was looking for a light but comfortable pack I'd defintiely be looking at the Osprey Exos Pro that's just come out. It's like 1kg, but has a load capacity up to 18kg which is pretty heavy for that weight saving.
I've got the Lanshan 2 pro, and I've replaced those tie outs too, they are a bit crap, but now they are great. I've replaced the main lines, and separated the door lines so they are independant. I've also used bungy cord for the bathtub which means it can move around without chance of pulling the pegs out. There are great mod vid's to check out various options. Great little tents.

I would not take the Lanshan if you think there shall be any wind or heavy rain. A couple of friends have had significant issues with theirs. Stick to the Helm ……& best wishes on your trip. 🎉
i would always go for a free standing tent ,just so you know you can pitch any place if you can not get guides in you body weight will keep it where you put it lol not say you or me be on the heavy side

I think the weather conditions dictate what gear you take so if your paying a lot of money on a what if GPS device then I'd be taking the helm for the same reasons as it can handle things better than the lanshan.also I thought you'd got the exos 48 as well?

Just a quick question about your Lanshan 2... After watching your video I decided to check out the tent. The does say it's 208cm long/wide
I am 2m tall and I am concerned that the end/sides slope form very sleepy. Are you able to tell me what the actual usable width is...?
I’ll measure it next time I’m out in it, but at 2m it’ll be a squeeze.
Funny that we have the same tents, but different. I have a helm compact 2 and a Lanshan 1. Even tho the helm 2 is more flappy in wind than the helm 1, I would still bring that in windy conditions over the lanshan. Obviously the lanshan is way more comfortable to carry if you don't expect strong wind. Also, If you peg the lanshan's vestibules down with a separate peg (ignoring the hook for the doors) It's way better for wind protection, you might also drop the poles to 115 but then the inner is not as taut.

I’m a cheapskate, so I would not buy a Garmin, especially if I’ve got to spend another £15 a month to get the thing to work.
Mind you, I am due a trip to IKEA, so I may need a backup phone…
I’ve packed a 3 day food supply, and a sick bag in case I start panicking because I can’t find the exit. 😳

100% this, decent pair of earplugs and any eyemask (or even a rolled down wooly hat) will do wonders, particularly in summer.

Helm 1 is proven over and over, I would never buy a tent that needs any extra sealing as I think it’s dreadful and poor manufacturing. Sell me a finished product not a half finished tent! 🍄
A Garmin gps tool? You have cell service everywhere in UK and in those rare places you don’t just walk to the next nearest town 2miles away. Unlike the USA we’re 30 % of the USA doesn’t have cell coverage and if you don’t have it it’s 10miles to 50 miles of no service and the next town could be 30 miles away. At this point it’s an excuse to buy a new toy. 😂

If you're injured and have no signal, you might not be able to "just walk", whether it's 1 mile or 100 miles. Kinda the point 😉
That's not the case.
I recently spent 24 hours without any signal at all.
It was around 20 miles walking without said signal.
I was around 10 miles from the nearest home, let alone a town.
Remember, a phone needs a line of sight to a mast.
