Hi Paul, firstly, I've been watching your posts for sometime now and I'd just like to say thanks for reinspiring me to get off my bum, I just completed a hike in similar weather, were you completely dry in that gear you're wearing, I had a Peter Storm Stormshield 3000mm jacket with a pair of trespass qikpac 5000mm trousers and a new pair of Karrimor Orkney boots (waterproof??, hmmm!!) guess what I'm trying to say is, is my gear adequate, kind of already know the answer lol, I was out for 8 hours, wet after 5, convinced myself I was sweating lol, keep on posting mate I'm sure I'm not the only person to be inspired by you, many Regards Les.

Sorry that I've only just seen your message. Congratulations at getting started. Unless you have rich parents then get the best kit that you can afford and just enjoy yourself. As Paul says, don't leave anything behind. Clean up after yourself, don't upset anyone ( I may have been a bit of a loud camper at your age) and enjoy your hikes. Also, make sure you have everything that you need for the hike and don't go out unprepared. You sound very sensible but make sure you wear decent footwear and, as I said to my son in Derbyshire last year, if you can see a storm coming in, pitch the tent and bunk down or go home before it hits. Enjoy your camps

Hi Paul , aye it all starts around 50 with your health . I'm sure everything will be alright for you , it's all a balance life i reckon . No one wants to live like a monk , but at the same time you can't abuse your body . Getting out there camping and and hiking is good exercise and good for the mental health side of life too - sitting infront of the telly vegetating is the last thing you wanna be doing .
I've had a couple of trips to the quacks and the hospital myself - turned out to be polyps - you can google the procedure . It is a worry , i think that's natural , but it's always best to stay in touch with what's going on in the inside . All part and parcel of getting older i suppose . ATB , Take it easy fella .

Paul & all you menfolk of a certain age, GO & GET YOUR PROSTATES CHECKED! My brother looked, and felt, the picture of health but, to be blunt, his peeing was apparently a trickle not a gush. So he got it checked by a doctor, it was enlarged and easily fixed with pills. I'm now nagging my bloke to go get his checked because he's just passed the 50 mark himself (brother is 60). You have your orders!
Love your videos. I'm stuck in a wheelchair full time now but in my former life, I camped all over my home county of Dorset. I just go camping via UA-cam videos now and I'm bloody jealous! There's nothing better than being under a tent in the pouring rain.

I’d endorse that advice - I was diagnosed with advanced but fortunately localised prostate cancer just after Christmas following ignoring the typical symptoms for up to a year. Also, during an associated CT scan they picked up a probable cancerous tumour (tbc) on a kidney just for good measure... Both are in the process of being treated and I should have a good outcome, but it’s scary what can be going on in there without our knowledge.

Hi Paul. Don't worry about your health check. It's not invasive 😂. I was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney and lung cancer in 2020. I was given 3 months to live but by using Rick Simpson oil and watching videos like yours I am thankfully beating it. You have inspired me to get back out with the tent and into the hills. I have been very blessed in the last 4 years and a lot of my recovery is down to people like you. Keep up the good work. Jamie.

I've got more active since I hit my fifties than I've been in a long time, so don't be making any plans to be slacking off just yet. The only thing to worry about is when the doctor has his finger in your bum he doesn't put both hands on your shoulders.... 😅

Paul, get yourself to the doctors, the minor discomfort you are dreading is just in your head. If the disease they are looking for in blokes over 50 is caught in time, any treatment at an early stage can be lifesaving with minimal side effects. If you leave it too late when you have symptoms, then the outcomes may be larger interventions with side effects.
    By the way, great video.
The insecurities you talk about are what a lot of other males think, so if by sharing these thoughts a subscriber visits their GP, you will have helped them catch a treatable illness early, which is an awesome result from a video.

I have had the "finger" now too....not that bad but its a releif as i know they are checking me and making sure it doesnt come my way, so in that respect no worries! its worth doing!
Really worried myself about myself but cant get the motivation to get back out again....have all the kit and the knowledge but just need to get out but dont fancy going on my own and dont want to go with some fitness guru either..... would love to find a website that has people like myself who are overweight and low on fitness who want to get out so i can meet up...

Loved the video. I'm 68 years old. My desire to get out camping has never left me. However, Severn years ago, while I was out with my wife, something happened, which changed my life. We had walked about six miles or so, we where about half a mile from home, and I hit what I called a brick wall. I started shaking so much I couldn't stand. My legs just stopped. It took nearly one hour to get home. Over the next week or so, I noticed that I had no fuel in the tank. In other words, I had no energy. This brought back memories of my army days when I used to do forced marches with a full kit, around 80 to 90 pounds, sometimes carrying a general-purpose machine gun on your shoulder. After about 20 or so miles cross country, it became time to set up camp. When the adrenaline subsides, then the shaking starts, but it doesn't last long. Anyhow, I'm getting back to today. These same feelings, the shaking lasts for days if I try to exert myself, and this comes with chronic pain. After the doctor carried out some tests, he said that I had ME ( Chronic Fatigue Syndrome ) and Fibromyalgia. These create problems affect me mentally. I can no longer pursue my outdoor life. Walking even 20 yards is an effort. I'm now restricted to camping in my garden. Even getting set up is like climbing a mountain. We tend never to go to the doctors for checkups. We just go from day to day thinking nothing about it. Would you run your car without checking your fuel, oil, tyre pressure, and body work? We only get one body, and yet we neglect to service it, we all need to have health checks done annually. You go to the doctors and get your health check done. Eventually, something is going to go wrong with it, and everyone will experience a fault at some time in their live. With my problems, I am now in prison, probably of my own makings, because I neglected to have a yearly service, i.e., AN ANNUAL HEALTH CHECK. Enjoyed the video. Sorry for the rant. Take care, and hopefully, I'll see you in the next video.👍

Maybe an E-Bike or something you can take it easy on would allow you to camp. Where I live, there are hike-in camp sites you can ride bikes to and people always come in with the camping gear strapped to the bike(so you dont have to carry it). A lot of nice parks have fun rides into campsites. Not the same as hiking to a wild camp but still a good adventure outdoors. I ride my electric unicycle to camp sites all the time.. HIke in sites are less busy too, so it feels kind of like wild camping. You never have teens making noise and partying, usually there aren't many people there. If you have a health scare overnight, its probably good to be in an established place as well.

Glad to see you got to use the camp spot you've yearned for for so long 😁. Go for the health check. I was never given the option and I hike for miles carrying camera gear as a hobbyist landscape photographer. Last April I went to the docs with what I thought was a persistant chest infection. I was sent to A&E and blood tests said that I'd had a heart attack sometime in the previous 6 months or so and I need a cardio stent fitted. 48 hours later I was home with 4 weeks off and a rehab regime to work through. I'm fine now but in hindsight was a bit of a wakeup call. You need your health to do what you do, don't lose the opportunity to find any problems early 🙂 Take care 😁

Hi Paul, yes I'm still about and walk past that camp site regulary, just to make sure its been looked after, such a lovely spot, near to home, great views and hidden from view. I first camped there 8 years ago on a very snowy camp, around 2 foot drifts, even bought a pair of snow shoes after the camp, it never really snowed after that !
I have a couple more pitches in that area, one when I cooked roast beef with my oven you walked past on your other video, but like you said a day walking about will reveal several good sites to camp.
All the best with your health check, definetly worth doing, 20 years ago when I was working we had them at work and I found out I had high blood pressure, been on tablets since, so really my blood pressure has been fine all that time, if it had not been picked up, who knows what might of happened, so get it done, I'm sure you'll be fine.
As you know I'm having a break, doing a bit of travelling around and hols, UA-cam does take up a lot of time, hope to be back out camping in Nov/Dec...best get there early if I want to camp up there, there maybe a queue.....all the best Pat

I know the mattress you mean, the 5.8 Rating one, silver, Light-something, but seems to have been rebranded as Naturehike?, it's apparently very good, I was tempted but still a bit much for me - but MUCH cheaper than the competition, happy with my R4 Trail Pro atm...I don't have one but Daley Outdoors swears by his, he got one a few months ago and sold his other mattresses like his Therm-a-rest neoAir? Apparently it's quieter and more comfortable than the NeoAir...quite a few videos about his on his channel.
I just turned 50, not had a health check yet, they always hassle me for random check-ups anyway, so not sure I'd notice! (but then are totally AWOL when I request an appointment - typical!) I just ignore them...I have chronic conditions anyway, so my asthma and eczema isn't getting better! Camping with those conditions is fun, means I can't be super utlralight lugging medecines along....but I find fresh air and exercise is good for me and them. Apart from sunburn!

Hi Paul..go have your check up, don’t worry about the finger jobby, it’s not that bad. Cholesterol and diabetes are probably your biggest concerns, take action according to the results. I logged with an app everything I put in my mouth for a month, then analysed what’s good what’s bad what I could do without or just cut down. Find your happy medium, and never deny yourself a luxury. Eat that donut, but you have to walk 5 miles to balance it. I believe your health it dealt to you at birth, you can meddle around with it a bit, dieting is not easy, everything in moderation. im 66 , this August just passed I cycled and camped 600 miles around northern France. Good luck pal, and thank you for your candidness, you are not alone

I'm the fittest person i know but my bad cholesterol was high considering my activity so some diet changes for 6 months and then a re-test to make sure all on track. We can't do the thing we love unless we stay fit and healthy and if we can get to retirement in good shape, we can do it every day. Didn't get a finger up the back passage, bit relieved about that but shouldn't they be checking that? Ha Ha. Love the vids - keep on keeping on.

Don't drink alcohol as just doesn't agree with me, which is a real shame as she also makes her own vodkas, rosehip, elderflower, etc, etc......... As mentioned on another one of your vids, I'm loving my x-boil system, there's not a lot to dislike really. I've just (on my trip to UK) loaded-up on synthetic jackets, got 3 Montane ones, Prism, Axis Alpha (mix of down & synth) & an Icarus..... All bargains from the factory outlet shop in Ashington. Looking forward to giving them a good going over during the winter months. ATB Paul.

Great video matey, and a beautiful spot to pitch. I watched that video when you went hunting for this spot and to be honest I didn't think you were going to find it but you did 👍 because I have watched your videos before and no disrespect seen that you like your food, so when you got the pot Noodle out I thought is that all you're having to eat ! But then the meat came out and I thought there you go lol .
Ask for your age and your health check well I'm a good decade older than you and have had cameras up and down and fingers everywhere (FROM A DOCTOR) and have to take about 14 different tablets every single bloody day💊 so don't be too concern about a finger up your bum, 🥺 believe me it's nothing, to remove the embarrassment I usually make a joke to the doctor and say at least by me dinner first lol

Hi. I enjoy your adventures. Eating-wise, a good rule of thumb is two-thirds plant and one-third animal. So eg: 1 pork steak and two veggies. Grill or fry broccoli, peppers, courgette, onion, garlic, even carrots... mixed nuts or seeds also good fried till they pop or raw just as a snack. Aim to consume 30 veg a week. I lost 25 kilos and never counted a calorie. Good luck.

Hi Paul, You should try the Thermarest Trekker - which turns your sleeping mat into a ground chair. I have a Helinox Ground chair myself but never take it wild camping as I utilise my sleep mat - Exped Synmat 7 LW - with the Trekker 25. It works especially well with the X-mid 1 as there is more headroom.

Noodles are great camping. Amazon had 12 packs of the maruchan instant noodles that come in the cup like that for $3.74!! I bought like 6 packs, gone camping about 10 times since then, and still have a cupboard full of noodles 🤣(thats 31 cents per cup of noodles). Usually you can only find the bagged version for that cheap. The ones without a cup and you have to boil the noodle block. Not great for camping.

Regarding diet and health, don't sweat it too much. 80/20 rule is best. Do the best you can 80% of the time, sod the 20%.
Minimising the processed food and going for unprocessed foods is a good idea. Low carb may help with avoiding fat storage, as fat storage is driven by the hormone insulin. Investigations can be useful, I'd guess that a camera down or up (if you know what I mean) can be useful, if unpleasant.
If you feel a bit rubbish but the stats come back all "normal" (been there) I'd concentrate on the 80 of the 20 and make that as high quality as possible nutrition, movement, and stress-wise.

Hi Paul, Don't worry about your health mate, it's all about attitude and listening to what your body is telling you! The check up will be fine, if you have 'the personal check' you won't feel a thing and it's worth having. Definitely see you at Outdoor Expo next year, I've been following you for a while now, I always look forward to your (and Andrew Beavers) latest videos. Love the 'latest gossip' part of your videos, you're very watchable, relatable and down-to-earth. Paul, as for your 50 year MOT. I would be very surprised if they did the “finger of fudge” test, more than likely to do a PSA blood test mate which has been proven not to be 100% accurate but I guess it would depend upon any other symptoms you may have. Don’t worry about it mate, you’ll be worrying about nothing. Got to say though mate, us blokes don’t talk about health concerns enough. Thankfully due to a good friend sharing his journey alarm bells started ringing for me and you could say that he saved my life, unfortunately he is no longer with us. I couldn't agree more re-food. For one or two nights out, instant or quick cook pasta meals can't be beat. Paying a tenner per evening meal is like buying fish and chips or a cheap Indian takeaway every night. I know these pasta 'n' sauce meals are full of stuff we shouldn't be eating, but once in a while can't be bad. Plus it's seriously cheap! What's not to like... I throw in a small tin of mackerel for some protein, and bosh! A good muesli for breakfast, milk powder already in, just add water and there you go. And that is pretty cheap as well.

Regarding health issues, (as a big lad myself) and having the continuous battle with my weight I would say you are eating too much sugar. In addition, you are eating too many carbohydrates or food types (once digested) that turn into sugar. I would heartily recommend (no pun intended) that you eat foods that are organic meals with only one ingredient. Very easy to say, very difficult to stick to. Good luck mate

Cholesterol pills, blood pressure pills , flu jab, covid jab etc
I went into a pharmacy recently to pick up a prescription for my mum and while I was stood there waiting one of the pharmacy staff came out and asked me if I was taking any medication for any conditions and trying to convince me I should take a blood pressure check, diabetes test and cholesterol checks right there and then in the shop
I politely declined and told them my medical records weren’t up for public discussion in a shop full of people and I will seek medical attention when I feel ill
