Hi Sarah, Nice explanation of Belting. I would perhaps change the example of "Hey!" and use a glottal onset rather than aspirate onset. In fact you belted beautifully when you sang "The greatest love of all" because you started all the sound with glottal onsets, not aspirate onsets (like in Hey!). Glottal onsets help the folds to close completely, aspirate might trigger constriction due to excess of breath. Just saying! :) ciao
This is true ... However the Aspirate 'H' could be used as a remedy to release construction from Belt. The Glottal Onset is obviously used in the Estill Belt figure and is used to facilitate the fold closure, sub-glottis pressure and sense of speech quality, but you are in danger of constriction... Swings and round abouts really either is good.
I am a mezzo (E before middle C to about a high F) and have REALLY struggled with belting. The high larynx bit has made it easier for me, just discovered this trick on the video. Tell me, Sarah, do Mezzos struggle more with belting than Sopranos?
Dear Sarah I find your methods of belting very helpful. They are largely in synch with Estill and CVT methods of singing. Question: Do you imagine the shout "HEY" and then put the other vowels like "Oo. Ih, Eh, Oh and Ah" through that anchoring position? Thanks! Do you also teach lessons via skype and how much do you charge, taking into account that our currency is also different in value? Keen to learn from you :)
Hi Matt, thanks for your message. I don't teach skype lessons at the moment. Yes changing the vowel sounds in the same position is a good way to check that you don't hold any tension on the particular vowel sound and to feel the connection.
Hey Sarah, great different approach from all the others methods around, that seems like the real belting, not that watered down bridging kind of "belt". Your method seems similar to Estill method, does it have any correlation or influence from it?
In time all of this will cause serious tension and trouble. Points NOT to do.....a quick breath.....breathing through your nose......torso/upper back gripping........BEWARE! There will be no long term singing career with this type of approach.
Belt can cause problems if done incorrectly. If you are belting correctly using anchoring then the tension should be taken away from the vocal folds. It should feel easy and tension free. Unfortunately singers often push and drive their voices to get a belt sound but it is a technique that needs to be mastered. Sarah
Great to finally see someone demonstrating the Estill model on youtube. Keep it up! :)
WOW!! I just did the Yeah, up on the four notes! THAT IS THE BEST I HAVE FELT BELTING EVER!! Thank you thank you!
YESSSSS ANCHORING!!

Thanks love. It's brilliant.

Wow that actually felt really comfortable. But unfortunately C5 is under my break so I still couldn't go over to D5 when I tried!
Thanks a lot, Sarah!! I have a question now... Is pop music - forward singing?

Thanks for your message. Absolutely yes. I love Estill technique. It completely transformed my vocal ability.
Thanks so much, Sarah!! This is really helpful, inspirational, with a good dash of 'eye-candy!' Keep it up!!
Fantastic lesson! What school of vocal technique did you learn from? Estill perhaps?
