I am a guy and I do not currently coach voices but I am a choir director. Women struggle more with singing in their chest voice than men. People all have different voice types and some have more challenges. If you find it hard to sing in chest voice, your voice type probably tends to resist an in-between sound so it feels like you either make the best with head voice or would have to scream not sing to hit a chest note, and strong mixed voice is missing. But it is a placement thing, you need to adjust your placement to overcome these resistant spaces of your voice type and find your chest voice. Start in low range and strengthen it and then you will find the chest range begins to expand because your voice technique and dynamics "learn" how to handle your vocal space and find the hidden previously freedom in your range. Jiji and Allison, I believe this applies to you, especially if you are a soprano or light/lyric alto? UA-cam Addict, Chynna and Sylba, I imagine you are low altos (contraltos)? There is nothing wrong with that. There are many contraltos that often sing in the tenor section. You can always build the more resisted parts of your range with good practice, and believe me it is there even if it doesn't seem to exist right now. You probably would have a powerful strong mixed voice and rich head voice too that once you find and develop will allow you to continue singing in modal voice to higher notes that flow well with your chest voice and sound good. Good luck!
I can't tell you how many useless vocal coach videos I've watched about the upper register/ transitioning and how many days I've spent crying over not understanding how to sing!😂 BUT FINALLY, you've helped me ! Thank you, thank you, thank you !!xx
You have the most gentle and smooth chest voice I have ever heard. Mine is REALLY rough sounding so I mainly sing in mix! It's really beneficial for musical theatre but some genres sound really weird with my voice type for that reason.
I don’t hear it. I don’t hear the break in her voice and I only hear it occasionally in mine but I don’t think I’m using my mix because the sound always comes from the back of my throat and never behind the nose where people say I should feel it. Help please.
i think you figured by now but if not i give it a shot. try to watch the other tutorials before watching this one (its pretty advanced). At first work on belting and finding your head voice. It is good to note that your Headvoice can pretty easily mixed with your falsetto but an easy way to know which one is which is trying to go low. Your falsetto stops at your break point for chest voice whereas your head voice goes beyond. After that start on strengthening your head and chest voice as well as your belting until you have an overlap of at least half an octave you can hit with comfort. After that this tutorial gets interesting because after you have these voices you want to connect them. The thing about feeling the voice behind the nose is done by lifting the (i think its called soft palate). you can find that in another tutorial. A tip for that: It helped me a lot just standing in front of a mirror and practicing. just like learning on how to wiggle your ears. And another tip is: if you're not relaxed dont try it. Everything you do is far better with a relaxed voice.
You're wonderful! I'm a mezzo soprano and once had a high and powerful belt. However, I had kids and my voice changed. I also stopped practicing. I've been cast in a couple musicals but was passed over for a role in legally blonde due to, quite simply, being outsung. Big time outsung. The director was kind enough to actually give me this feedback. This video is SO HELPFUL. I love the exercises and I'll be doing them every day. Your voice is absolutely gorgeous by the way!! Thanks for sharing your gifts with us!
I used to feel that way. I didn't like my voice and thought I sounded mentally challenged with a male sounding voice, but over time, I've learned to accept and embrace the voice God gave me and work with it and build it.
It's normal in sopranos. I'm a boy soprano (i didn't go through puberty yet) and my chest voice F#4 is weird, so i usually go into head up to B6, and whistle up to F#8.
This lesson has helped me the most so far. I was pretty okay in my high register to begin with, but the lessons did help a lot. My low register needs help though; I cant wait for that lesson! This middle register lesson has helped a LOT because I'm singing "What Child is This?" at my church on the 20th, and the version I'm singing is right on my middle register (I would have preferred them to choose a higher version because I'm a strict soprano, but it's fine).
I found mix voice coordination by taking a high note, such as the word "Born" by Sam Cooke in the song "Change is Gonna Come". First line. "I was Booooorn, by the river". Holding the ooo sound and adjusting vocal coordination to add more chest resonance by adjusting placement, larynx position, ect.. until I get the sound I want. Then practiced other vowel sounds and modifications while singing sustained high note vowel sound. Over time, my voice actually grew and it was effortless for me to create rich volume. She is genius because her cues for finding the SENSATIONS are great. It's all about learning the sensation, and practicing that coordination that provides that sensation (getting to know your voice) GREAT VIDEO!
Dear Evynne, you are wonderful!! I have been singing all my life, from learning to harmonize with my dad as a little girl, to singing in multiple choirs all throughout high school, and graduating with bachelor degrees in both music education & vocal performance, but let me tell you...I LOVE what you are doing! After all that thinking and training and working, I let myself forget about the most important parts of learning to sing well, which is to have fun, be patient, and go easy on myself. Thank you SO much reigniting this passion by helping me to be encouraged about where currently I am vocally :o) - Elizabeth Dyer
Thanks for being so encouraging and positive. I get so frustrated and impatient with myself most of the time, but I'll keep working on it! It's one of my goals to put together a music video too someday! :)
I'm struggling super hard right now from being quarantined from covid...so my voice lessons are online this next quarter and I haven't been able to sing much. this video was SO helpful and exactly what I needed!!
Your willingness to share so freely all your wisdom is greatly respected. Your voice is pitch perfect as you so easily demonstrate all the techniques which many teachers fail to do and your videos are truly inspiring, many thanks Evynne.
Thank you thank you!!! This is exactly what I need to work on in my voice :) I have missed working with my vocal coach from college, and now that I’m raising a family haven’t had time for lessons. Thank you for offering this 😊😊😊
My lowest note that I am able to sing is an E3 and my highest note using my chest voice is C5# sometimes D5, but using my head voice I can sing up to B6
Wow what a friggin awesome voice Evynne! I'm a professional opera singer and was on the look out for a suit tutorial video for my best friend who is having issues with his mix. I'll pass on your channel. Thanks again, from London! 🇬🇧
Thank you for such an informative and entertaining video! I've been chosen to sing as the lead for a musical... But it's been a real struggle to sing my higher register (because I'm really a trombone player) and these videos have been really helping! Keep on keepin' on!
I am an Opera singer and I just want to say there is o such thing as mixed register. There is a transition between the modal voice and thyroid tilt voice.
Evynne thanks to you I have been practicing and getting better at singing. Also my main singing is either in the belly or the face, but I'm still working on doing both. My main goal is to sing hello
I am incredibly good at belting, whistle, and high notes for my age, but belting higher notes has always been harder for me. I have to learn to sing Notice Me Horton for my theatre magnet and I could not sing most of the higher notes when belting. Your videos on Twang and Mixed belting have helped me a lot. Thanks for the help!
You always do awesome voice lessons! But I would love to have Peter demonstrate mixed voice. I feel like being a male listening to a female voice makes it difficult to grasp the concept.
this video was perfect. just what i needed. i started noticing a break in my voice between head and head and this explains the situation perfectly and gives me exactly what i needed
I know this is an old video but I've just had the biggest epiphany of my singing career. In the choirs I've been a part of (amateur mostly) I've rarely had the chance to go anywhere below a high soprano. I have a really strong head voice, and mediocre but decent chest voice. However whenever I had to pass the two I would always break and get weak in the transition. I don't know how this has eluded me for so long... You've saved my singing in the choir I'm currently in and am getting the opportunity for solo singing now because of this. Thank you so much!
This is very cool I 'm always a bad singer but I progress... Slowly and very slowly but I progress and now I enjoy to sing ... and now people forget to say about me " please mercy stop a little bit singing " ... It's very useful Evynne Thank you for your lessons ...
After you've worked on these exercises for a while and you try to sing a song using mixed voice, how can you tell if you're using a mix or if you're just in head voice? How do you even mix the chest and head voices?
Mixed voice is like a chest voice natural voice but you're controlling your voice making it a bit small when hitting high note but you use mixed voice not head voice.
After you realized that effort is a determined attempt that's that's typically failure and is uncertain to work. You should know that just because you attempt with the intent of causing a purpose to succeed, doesn't mean you succeed to do it. Learn truth. You attempted on it, you you didn't succeed on it.
I really like watching your "How to sing" Videos, i love to sing and have wanted to find somewhere to learn more ^^ Thanks for doing these Videos, you're great! :)
For the life of me, I have been watching these mixed voice vids for a year or more now, and I still can't mix the two. I'm either very deep in my chest voice or very high in my head voice. Arrrhhg! ~ Gen
just discovered your voice lesson videos and I love them! growing up I used to ask my dad why I could sing a note and have it sound different...now I realize i was singing in head voice and chest voice! Love your videos!
try strengthening the middle register by first bringing the head voice down over the chest in descending 5 note scales. It is hard to get beginner students out of the chest voice if you don't start a yawn bringing the head voice down first. Always start with open vowels to find head resonance.
These videos are always very helpful, the guy "head voice" doesn't sound nearly as nice as yours does 😂. But seriously, you and Peter are awesome, and I wish I could make videos like you do. You're awesome, and a role model. Thank you evynne!
I can't wait to start using these exercises! I had a very short period of time where I had a really strong mixed register and no break and since then both have become really weak and I -really- want to get back to where I was! Thanks for these! :) (Maybe I'll even start posting some covers when I feel more confident in my voice!)
Hi im new at you channel. Please tell me cause i exercise this really a lot so my question is : WHY my mix voice is so nasal ? I can't do nothing about it. I think i tried everything. I got nasal always when i start to sing in mix voice.
Evynne Hollens nice video i am classical singer it is helpful for techniquel strenght 😍😍😘😘😙 also i have the natural note of SA RE GA MA PA DA NI SA those are classical swara can you make one video for classical notes plz
Thank you these types of videos are very helpful to me as a classically trained spinto soprano it has been difficult for me in the past to do low notes. And so, having to learn how to use my chest voice and mixed voice is been crucial to me and especially for hitting high notes properly through belting and through my mask. A lot to learn but if you want to sing like a Disney Princess these techniques are so important. I really loved your video where you showed you changing your voice for all the Disney princesses that was VERY impressive and most people (I think including myself) probably cannot even sounds close to that.
I've got to give credit to my high school music teacher for teaching me the right way to sing. I started singing at church, traditional hymns (which aren't always easy to do), before my voice deepened into a baritone. To me baritone is the hardest range to achieve because you can't really get high (soprano) or deep (bass), since you're sort of stuck in the middle of those vocal ranges. But she did always tell us baritones, "You still have a three-chamber register so USE IT!!!" I think my middle register comes a little more naturally to me than with others, probably because a lot of our high school choral pieces focused on singing in your falsetto and belting voices. We were singing nearly all of our songs in our middle registers without us really understanding exactly how the middle register is perfected. We were probably too young to really understand it musically so she just focused on teaching us the correct way to sing those notes contained within the middle register (whether you were alto, soprano, baritone or bass), which, in the process, taught us to find our middle register. I notice my middle register when I'm singing a selection that requires me to go down if I can't get high enough to hit the high notes (sometimes the notes are just too far outside a baritone's range, so he has to drop and octave or else he'll be straining to hit the high note and it will come out way too raspy) and then I have to bounce right back up...or if I get into my falsetto and then drop back down just a tad. I feel my middle voice resonating somewhere between my chest and my head, which sort of makes sense.
you resemble jessie j a lot to me. your beautiful. i have been singing my entire life. i stopped singing when i graduated because there was no more chamber choir or talent shows. all i had was karaoke...and i have given up being a star because i have a family now..but i decided to start singing again. but i would get discouraged everytime i would sing a song that i used to be able to sing wonderfully and your lessons have been helping me to get my voice back. thank you. i used to pay 50$ a lesson. and your much better. thank you
Elijah stop making claims when you don't know what you are saying. Voice types are very different, many people experience a full ceiling in chest voice and need to break to light head voice to sing higher not true that every male'/female's voice will naturally mix. Edanil, your voice type is probably one with a stronger break and other features that tend to resist a mix voice, like mine. What you need to remember is that mix voice is not literally a mix of head and chest voice. That description only helps people who have a more natural mix voice space, but you will have to be more intentional than conceptual to find your mix voice and then you will need to build it and fix its beauty after you have "unlocked" it. You need to alter your placement within your head voice to find the space where the tone and weight shifts, until you unlock a span of tonality and weight that will allow you to be able to sing in different degrees of twang and weight all the way from supported light head voice to mix voice and even a mix belt. Mix voice is really a very full, powerfully rich head voice. If you are having difficulty getting a stronger head voice in your lower and mid register, because of your strong break, try it in higher (but comfortable) register first and then when you develop it you will work on additional placement technique to cross into your lower register. Some may not understand what I have said, but I think you will. Bottom line is that you can find and improve mix voice by personal good practice with good placement and control exploration, all by yourself. It does not mean your voice type will disappear and allow you to be just like someone else, this is part of the confusion of many. But you can release your own potential and you will learn that your own unique voice has its own incredible strengths. Mix voice is more withdrawn than head voice, like it wants to get as withdrawn as chest voice, but in a healthy way WITHOUT putting strain on your throat or tension on your tongue. In fact your placement should pop forward at the upper area of your mouth. The placement for mix voice is more on the edges where it finds that edged tone, while head voice is round and even. In your case, you will find that it feels like you have to move the sound at the top of your tone downward to the edge of your upper teeth in order to find that space where you can pop it into a mix tone that would resonate in the mask. That is because you have a low break point in your voice and you are using your placement and shapes to "put an anchor under it" and avoid breaking. It is not easy to give vocal coaching by text so I hope this helps.
Elijah, trust me people like myself and edangil will never describe their voices as naturally crossing into mixed voice when they go higher than a certain point. Yes everyone uses mix voice to some extent at some points, in singing and even speech! but it is honestly very minuscule for some. But regarding connecting to mix voice when going higher the only thing that is a fact or scientific is to say that every person's voice breaks OR transitions at some point. NOT everyone transitions into mix voice "naturally". that is a fact. Also, since edangi is a girl she may not even be talking about going from chest voice to mixed voice but may be she only sings in head voice and is trying to go from head voice to mix voice. Many voice coaches don't truly take into consideration the full spectrum of voices when they make and repeat blanket directions. I myself have done some voice coaching too and I am a choir director. I have observed and understood all kinds of voices, so hopefully I have helped edangil clear up some confusions.
Elijah sounds like you have a great vocal range and great mix voice belt. Kudos. I would take it you are a tenor with a wide belting range and who can attain a pretty high mix.
Just because you effort is a determined attempt on something, doesn't mean it will succeed nor do you succeed because you try to make yourself succeed or anything else succeed.
Hi Evynne. Just discovered your site and I've subscribed. I absolutely LOVE your attitude. All of this vid made full sense to me because I have been "tutored" via another site since July 2017. I could not even breathe properly before that believe it or not. I did a note range test early on and found out I was Mezzo Soprano but both my upper and lower registers have extended now, my upper one more extensively. My high voice is stronger than my lower voice so I have been working on that. I sing mostly Musical Theatre and can hit the high notes now in the Phantom songs, also the ones in Les Mis. I shall definitely keep tuned to your channel now. Singing is a bit of an obsession with me now - I hope that is not a bad thing. As well as vocal warm ups, I do the tongue route warm up and upper body (neck, arm and shoulder warm ups). Thank you so much for taking time to pass on your expertise. Kind regards.
Hey there. I’ve gotten to the half century and my voice has changed!!! So I’m on line practicing to get back some of that flexibility in my range that I once had. 😢
Hi I have been siniging for 3yrs n have a weird break I'm a Bass 2 but I break at f#3/G3. I have also done some soprano 2 and have a strong falsetto but mostly I have to sing Bass 2 because of how rare we are but being that my break is low I get covered real quick and sometimes pop up the octave and my choir director will tell me to just add more weight and sometimes that helps but not all the time Mr. Hollens knows more of the story and I came to you for more tips and tricks Happy Holidays, X
I am the most impatient person about my voice you will ever meet. Everytime someone does something I cant, or I have a voice crack because of puberty, I just break down and cry. And of course you cant sing while you cry so I end up just giving up entirely.
I have a really strong chest voice and really strong head voice, but since I’m a soprano 1 I tend to rely on my head voice and not really practice my mixed voice. This was very helpful! Hopefully my mixed voice will get stronger:)
This was really helpful. Little details about how to do this. Differenciating between upper and lower VOICE, and directing the voice to the cheeks/frontal part of the face through the nose instead of the head, was an extremely imp top to actually know how and what to do. Thanks a lot!!! 😊😊 Been struggling with it for so long.
I love videos like this, trying to explain a mixed or protected voice to non singers is like speaking in Latin 😂 and I love that she said you have to develop your mixed voice like it’s a muscle, it might feel like cheating when you want to belt everything, but after working on it it can get even more powerful than your belt!
You know, it really helps so much when you provide examples of what you mean, as you did here with that bit of your 'Hello' video, what a great teacher you are, Evynne! I wish I could find a local group to sing with; I know a common suggestion is to find a church choir to join but I'm not Christian and my religion doesn't have much basis in music or song. Hmm I guess my next step is to check the Community Education schedule and see if there's anything possible there.

Thank you for offering this 😊😊😊
My lowest note that I am able to sing is an E3 and my highest note using my chest voice is C5# sometimes D5, but using my head voice I can sing up to B6
our registers are quite similar, what song do you think is great for us?
eylül ama LGS hm i’m not sure, maybe an Ariana Grande song?
gucci grande maybe, i think billie would be good too
2:32 that was so gorgeous I’m gonna cry
Absolutely love these videos! I am going to go for a music degree once I get into college and these videos help out so much! Thank you Evynne! 😄😉😘🎤🎧
+Shaina Toth Wonderful! Thanks for the comment Shaina & yay for pursuing music in college!
I love this series... these are exactly the exercises I do with my teacher every week :D
+MrChicAChowster Great to hear!
I am an Opera singer and I just want to say there is o such thing as mixed register. There is a transition between the modal voice and thyroid tilt voice.
I use my mixed voice all the time, more than any other parts of my voice.
makeupmermaid22 lucky!! it's so hard for me, as I've just naturally developed my head voice the most (more than my chest voice, actually)
I’m a soprano in choir but I do musical theatre and it’s so hard for me to mix
HOW
I have a very hard time mixing my chest and head voice😕
I have a smooth transition, but I mostly use either chest voice only or head voice only, it's really difficult to mix.
Finally someone that explains things very clearly, thank you ! I am gonna work on those things immediatly :D
Wish I could hear you belting high notes and whistling! That would be great!
This was great , been trying to work out mixed voice an achieving resonance. You got straight to the point with the exercises, well done
THERE IT IS. I've been trying to find the resonance space forever, thanks for clarifying where it is so now I can aim for there every time.
I've always been using a mixed voice and i never realized it until now
I know this is an old video but I've just had the biggest epiphany of my singing career.
I love how you really care about your viewers and always posting up helpful videos. Thank you!!
+Rawchid Oh I just love to hear from you all too! Thanks!
@@joeofmoon1287 This shit made more sense than the video, thank you.
@@ASMR-JMelliee Yeah there are a lot of videos on mixed voice but they are really confusing
@@ASMR-JMelliee it was the opposite for me lol video made sense. That comment made no sense to me 🤣🤣
After you realized that effort is a determined attempt that's that's typically failure and is uncertain to work. You should know that just because you attempt with the intent of causing a purpose to succeed, doesn't mean you succeed to do it. Learn truth. You attempted on it, you you didn't succeed on it.
You remind me so much of my singing teacher! You're just as good and bubbly and amazing at teaching as her! Thanks for the videos! They're amazing!
These videos help so much!!! your voice is so beautiful and you explain everything so perfectly❤
+Madyson McCollum Thanks so much Madyson!
Evynne Hollens Love fr Philippines
@@EvynneHollens You are good. And I'll stick to instructions.
This was a great help to me! Thank you for the great video. 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
My vocal teacher always did these with me they are the best!!!! Thanks for having this video!
These videos are always very helpful, the guy "head voice" doesn't sound nearly as nice as yours does 😂. But seriously, you and Peter are awesome, and I wish I could make videos like you do. You're awesome, and a role model. Thank you evynne!
+William Kelly Thanks so much William! Yeah, maybe I'll have Peter pop in and do some demonstrating one of these days!
I can't wait to start using these exercises! I had a very short period of time where I had a really strong mixed register and no break and since then both have become really weak and I -really- want to get back to where I was! Thanks for these! :) (Maybe I'll even start posting some covers when I feel more confident in my voice!)
can peter be a guest teacher in this series? :) you two are such an awesome power couple
+helena bcfan I'll ask ;) Thanks!
Hi im new at you channel. Please tell me cause i exercise this really a lot so my question is : WHY my mix voice is so nasal ? I can't do nothing about it. I think i tried everything. I got nasal always when i start to sing in mix voice.
Evynne Hollens nice video i am classical singer it is helpful for techniquel strenght 😍😍😘😘😙
also i have the natural note of SA RE GA MA PA DA NI SA those are classical swara
can you make one video for classical notes plz
Evynne Hollens plz please reply my question 😯
Thanks. That was great. I have a lot of work to do. The patience part is encouraging.
This was ACTUALLY helpful! GEESH. Thank you! I’ve watched like, 5 videos on this looking for something that made sense!!!
This is one of the first vocal lessons I've watched on UA-cam that actually gave me clear instruction and education.... Thank you!
what an excellent video!! as someone trained in choir as a child this is so nice and familiar but i love your teaching (and singing) style and voice!
you resemble jessie j a lot to me. your beautiful. i have been singing my entire life. i stopped singing when i graduated because there was no more chamber choir or talent shows. all i had was karaoke...and i have given up being a star because i have a family now..but i decided to start singing again. but i would get discouraged everytime i would sing a song that i used to be able to sing wonderfully and your lessons have been helping me to get my voice back. thank you. i used to pay 50$ a lesson. and your much better. thank you
Thank you Evynne Hollens i do your vocal warms ups every day i so appreciated very much !
yeah, happy holidays to the hollens family too!
I have been working with my voice for 2 years now - on my own. I went from thinking I'm contralto to singing finally now my first big diva song.🙌🏻🐯
Patti Labelle is a prime example of the trained mixed voice. She increased her power & mastered singing in her mixed voice.
I have a higher register so this really helps keeping my voice healthy and finding that point for me
i cant mix voice why
I really cant. When im working on my mix its just like head voice.
Thank you so much for this video! I have a performance coming up and this will help me soooo much!!!!!!! Your an amazing singer and teacher
+Grace Friesen Thanks so much Grace! Hope it goes well!
Hi Evynne! Did anyone tell you you're the most elegant vocal coach on UA-cam (and probably everywhere else)?
Dang... I bet you're an incredible jazz singer!
Hey there. I’ve gotten to the half century and my voice has changed!!! So I’m on line practicing to get back some of that flexibility in my range that I once had. 😢
I don't have the knowledge I just love singing.. Thank you for your sharing.
Hollens knows more of the story and I came to you for more tips and tricks
Happy Holidays,
X
I really love these how-to-sing video! You explain things so well :)
Can't wait to try this when I get home! Thanks for this gem :)
Your videos are amazing! I've learned so much. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Your voice is beautiful. You sound heavenly
Zur Video quality is amazing.
You explaining game is on point.
Your singing is gorgeous.
Your exercises are helpful.
A Sara B fan right here! Loved this video and your "she used to be mine" cover. Suscribed! :D
This is great! Thanks for being so clear about this subject that often gets so confusing :p
Spot on, exactly what I was looking for to help a friend harness her mixed voice!
This was good! Thank you. helpful--and I have been doing on line ( you tube) lessons for almost 2 years now. I learned new stuff today.
What a beautiful Singer you are! flawless
Only exercise so far that helped me find MixedVoice Thank you!
This was a very helpful video for me. Your explanation was clear and the exercises are very actionable. Thank you!
I love videos like this, trying to explain a mixed or protected voice to non singers is like speaking in Latin 😂 and I love that she said you have to develop your mixed voice like it’s a muscle, it might feel like cheating when you want to belt everything, but after working on it it can get even more powerful than your belt!
It's actually also a belt
@@XaiMartinezOfficialYT mixed voice is not belting that’s incorrect
I’d give anything for fullLength training videos! You’re the best!
THANK YOU.... I will practice this everyday
For me it is really helpful to see in your video- when you use the chest- and mixed voice. I'd like to see more videos like this one. Thanks!!!
yep I can relate to that 😄 should I apply to Disney princess auditions?
I feel focused when listening while looking closely to your face. I feel concentrated. Thank youuu
Excellent explanation and annotation!
