Today, we’re gonna talk about Belting!!! Yay!!! It’s that kind of full voice, expansive singing that everyone wants to do! Today! We’re gonna get in there, and activate it! So by the time you’re done watching today’s video, you’re gonna belt!
What is belting?? Hmmmm…. Everybody has got a different definition for it. Some say, it’s extending chest voice really high. I don’t think so. My definition of belting is it’s singing loudly with energy, great resonance and a deep chord connection. Dynamic balance. It feels super similar to speaking. So if it feels really simple, like you’re just talking on pitch - You got it!!! So today, we’re gonna break down 4 areas to check in with when you start belting. Remember how I said that it feels really similar to speaking? It should. But it shouldn’t feel like you’re yelling or screaming on pitch. That is too much air being forced through the throat and mouth resulting in a high larynx placement. So the first place we’re gonna check in with is our belly.
#1 Support from underneath
Close your mouth. Put one hand on your belly and whimper. Feel that contraction of the diaphragm below? We’re gonna do this 5 times nice and slow almost like a sit up. We’re gonna feel a steady contraction of the ab muscles lifting the diaphragm for that awesome support underneath. When you’re belting, it’s absolutely crucial to feel the support from underneath. If that support stops, you’re gonna pinch off at the throat. If the air moves to quickly, it forces too much air pressure under the chords. So the air should always feel slow when you first start working with the belt.
#2 Bounce the sound
All signing is acoustic. Meaning the sound vibrations bounce around everywhere on the inside. To activate a type of sound, we’re going to concentrate on one specific area. The belt is somewhat concentrated within the mouth. Again, very similar to natural speech. But you’re not going to push the sound out of your mouth. That’s yelling. You’re gonna bounce that sound off the hard pallet. Try saying the word - Hey! Feel it forward, bouncing off of the middle of the mouth. Feel that little contraction underneath? Good! Try quick little taps - now slow it down.
#3 Add the cry
The proper name for this resonance is called pharyngeal. It’s a bouncing of the resonance off of the nasal pharynx. That’s a super cool concave area where throat meets nose. This is where you’re gonna get that expansive bold sound. And this is the area you want to bounce off of as we ascend higher in pitch. Think baby cry - but keep it centered in speech. Hey! Like someone took your toy!
#4 engage the chord
Belting is just like speech, but times ten! Meaning it’s larger than life! It’s expressive and dynamic but also needs balance. When folks start to belt, they get too close to the yelling zone. This makes the belt super ridged and tightens the chords. As the pitch gets higher and higher, there is gripping on the chord to remain consistent with tone. When that pressure can no longer hold, the chords slip and relieve the pressure and that breaking sound is the result. Remember to keep your speech super flexible, and melodic. Play with lots of pitch on a medium level dynamic. Reading aloud of just being crazy with your natural speech will reinforce strength within the laryngeal muscles.
So there you have it folks! 4 great tips for finding your belt!
1. Support underneath
2. Bounce the sound
3. Add the cry
4. Engage the chord

I just thought about this as I am at Rv park and thought I would try and then I start to think what the new neighbours will think😂😂😂
They don’t know anything...

Note to self: Belting definition 1:45.
1) Support underneath (whimper) 3:28.
2) Bouncing the sound (Hey!) 5:58
3) Adding pharyngeal (baby cry) 9:28 where nose meets throat
4) Engage the cord, sound one (mum, mum) 11:55
Adding inner edges of chord, sound two (vocal fry) 14:30
Practice this at night in my room. My parents must be confuse why suddenly I practice singing 😅
I had to look because seeing the 99 likes bothered me. Lol
My dad was just like “Hey, are you okay?” 😂😂😂
I've been having problems with tension in my throat while belting high for my whole life. In between this video and your other videos I've discovered another spot that resonates in the higher frequencies with less tension. Now all I have to do is unlearn a life time of squeezing to get high.
I just practised and then realized that I can reach belting without difficulties.
Thanks to you Madeleine and greetings from France !
I have been singing for over 10 years. There is a free professional class available here.
Thank you, Madeleine!
It has been the best belting explanation video I’ve seen. Thank you so much.
My voice is super soft and it makes it so hard for me to sing powerfully :( Help haha
Shannon same with me, and. i think im also a contralto
Shannon Yes! I have the same problem
Hey I felt like that for sooo long and I just kept practising and practising and my voice got soo much stronger! Just keep singing, keep practising
Shannon me tooo sigh
Lol well my voice is loud and powerful but totally out of control 😂😂 so I sound like a very aggressive seal
Iam watching many others belting lessons but finding only crying like technique, shouting like technique etc and i don't like it coz it strains my throat, and finally i got here and finding the right technique. Amazing lesson, your technique helps me 💯%, it doesn't strain my throat anymore....thank you...
This is by far the best explanation of how belting is ‘assembled’ together!! The technique works!
Thank you so much Ritayung!
Thank GOD! Someone has the ability to transfer knowledge in a very practical way.
note to self:
exercise 1: 3:34
exercise 2: 6:44
exercise 3: 9:37
exercise 4: 12:55
I love that you added the vocal fry in this video. That's a great way to access thin fold singing, and I had never even thought to use fry in that way. Can't wait to experiment. I've always used light resonant buzzing exercises, but the fry seems great.
Lmao if i do that last exercise my neighbors are going to think I'm dying
LOLOLOL! That's ok! Give yourself total permission to get crazy as you play with your voice. It's not always going to sound "pretty." In fact, most of the time..it won't. But you'll have that access to sensations that you can build off of. I'm pretty sure my neighbors think I'm dying on a daily basis...but I just smile and wave as I'm out walking my dog.
+Madeleine Harvey lol yeah you are right thinking back I wouldn't be able to sing better than a few years back without all the weird voice experimentation i did. This is such a fun and useful video btw, great job!!
Mel Torres I thought the same😂
Lol 😂😂😂
🤣🤣🤣
i am a trained singer, recently went through some horrible health issues, this video changed it all in like 2 seconds. You are sooo intelligent.
thank you! sometimes our mentality blocks us a lot
THANK YOU for this! I'm a first soprano and I just got cast as Wednesday in The Addams Family so I need to learn to belt those high notes in Pulled without hurting myself! Slow the air flow, lots of support 👌
I'm going to audition for Wednesday!!! do you have any tips?
Great energy , instruction and inspiration. You are right on point. These techniques will allow me to avance to the next level for my vocals. Thank you so very much Madeleine.
This has changed my life. I sound amazing. Thank you!
because I'm from Venezuela and continues to place the written classes so I can translate and understand your great lessons I congratulate you
+AMBAR ¡Gracias! Realmente lo aprecio.
You are an amazing vocal coach! 😮
I think this is best set of advice of belting. Thank you very much.
She's really good.
This was sooooo helpful, thank u!☺️
Il commento italiano che cercavi 😃
Madeleine you're fantastic and brilliant.
Your way to explain is clear and fun. Super coach 💪💪
Wow!! The vocal fry at the end is amazing!! That allows you to avoid that heaviness!! Awesome! Can't wait to try it out tomorrow after some practice!!
Well damn how do I not sound Jamaican if I'm already Jamaican?
+Gisy Boo No! No! You OWN that Jamaican glory!!! Love it!! Just make sure not to slam your cords together on that exercise! Can't wait to hear you sing!
🤣🤣🤣
LMAO
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
💀💀 im sleep
This is the BEST instruction I've ever experienced for belting and for all of her other videos.
Best lesson on wholesome perspective of achieving the vocal range from chest to head voice. Great work!
By far the best tutorial on UA-cam on accessing the power & projection of belting to our voice in the different registers in a practical way. My hat goes off to you. Thank you for your wisdom sensei.
Thank you so much! I'm super glad you enjoyed the video! Happy Belting Mental kun!
This is like the best singing channel ever!
I'm already a pretty good belter but this made it soooo much easier for me!!! Thanks so much I have an audition coming up soon
I love your teaching style....
This video is perfect. There were no cut anywhere and yet it was so clear. Amazing teaching : )
a lot of belting volume comes from the shape of the back of the throat. you turn it almost into a bowl shape.
Can u explain? I feel like we should always have a bowl shape bc the soft pallette should be raised at all times. So what do you mean by changing to bowl shape when belting? What shape is it when not belting? Thanks
I think he means that you should not 'press' the notes cause when you press them, the throat closes and it's not good for the vocal chords (hurts most of the time). Don't know if that's what he meant, cause I'm a classical singer actually but I love musicals and pop songs too :) and I actually did that before and my throat hurt all the time after singing...
Hatch Man Do The only way I can explain it is you drop your jaw, open your soft pallet (you can feel your soft pallet in the back of your throat on the roof of your mouth, just feel like a squishy roof) and then you kinda let the sound shoot out of the roof of your mouth, but you don't push it out. just learn to use all of your diaphragm, and when you belt, it will literally feel like you're doing a sit up in your abdominal area. let go, and it will fly freely.
Dylan is correct. Never push your chords, push through your chest and push/project off of the roof of the mouth
Ruhe1986 it's also about the shape of the throat wholly and the skull
It determines how much resonance you can project
It's more about the way we're born
I've been singing for years and I've always struggled to find belting excercises. Thank you so much for making this video. #subscribed
welcome to my musical family!!! I'm so glad you're here! If there's anything you want to learn, let me know!
+Madeleine Harvey Yes! I've been trying to improve my control and breathing any suggestions?
I'd love to hear examples of actual songs or parts of song that put these exercises into practice. I just happened onto your videos and am loving them one after another. Thanks for sharing your exercises and experiences. I too use similar methods of teaching.
Super ! ❤
Yeah, your teaching is unique, and so well prepared, and easy to digest, and right to the core. You are so beautiful too inside and out.:) I am so glad to have found you.
Super helpful Madeleine! That baby cry took me out though lolol #Subscribed

Hugs from the States! Thank you so much !
Literally Emma Pillsbury haha
Total Compliment!! Thank you so much!
Audrey Smith Omg now I'm noticing lol
YES
Audrey Smith once a gleek always a gleek
That was cool! Thnks
+Daniel Donoso You got it! I'm so glad you liked it!
This is one of the most helpful belting vids I've watched! I'm classically trained and I have a fair amount of experience in show tune, I can even sing high and loud, but it just doesn't have enough "meat" to it sometimes for my personal preference. So thank you for making something that helps people like me!
your teaching worth thousands $$$$
John Churilla see my clip
I suffered from whooping cough in high school years, your videos have helped me so much they really are an awesome vocal workout. :)

She’s like naturally pretty omg
This is so helpful!! I've always had a really quiet voice when it comes to singing (probably due to my own vocal insecurities), but I'm auditioning for a couple parts in my showchoir soon that require the ability to belt, and this video is already making such a big difference for me!
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS! I've had so much bittiness and your technique and teaching is starting to bring it all together. So excited by the noises I'm gonna make from now on. Heard and felt a difference immediately as well as a boost in confidence. Ever grateful! xxx
I was always taught to sing from the diaphragm. And you will feel it sometimes too! It's the only way to bring a full sound without singing from your throat. As long as I do that I don't feel like I'm singing just from my throat. This really helps a lot. I'm trying to bring back my lung capacity since I have asthma and I'm 53. But I don't want to damage my voice doing it.
These are great exercises but how do you put them all together into an actual belt? I always feel vocal exercises are like singing in a test tube. They are so important but then you need the next application step to translate these practices into an actual song. Do you have a video for that?
HI Mary! That's a great question! Whenever you explore a vocal exercise, you'll want to be completely present to the experience that the exercise is giving. Each exercise is able to isolate a very specific experience in your voice. If you find that an exercise gives you a sense of openness, flexibility, freedom, strength or presence within your sound, you'll want to teach your muscles to "remember" the sensation. When you go to apply the exercise to the song, you are going to recreate the sensation that the original exercise gives you. Think of it as "training wheels" for your voice. For example, if you like the "Ma Ma ma" exercise, you can remove the lyrics, while performing the melody on the "Ma Ma Ma" feeling. When you are able to anchor that experience, you can add the lyrics while maintaining the sensation of the "Ma Ma Ma" exercise. I hope this helps!
Am also questioning my self
when i sing i sound like a guy with a deepvoice but at the sametime like a dying pigeon
You explain things SO WELL!!! Thank you so much!!
Really helpful thinking of the belt going out of the ears. I've been told to push the sound forward before - which made me constrict a lot. Then was taught to push the sound backwards, which makes me break a lot. But I like this visual! Thank you!
Many many thanks! The "mum" exercise helped tremendously where I'd hit a roadblock in my singing. I've watched tons of videos and nobody has mentioned this method, thank you for demonstrating, you rock!
Best belting vid I've seen so far; thank you
i hope this can really help i wanted to sing a song with high notes but i just torture the song ahahah
omg same hahaha
I'm trying to sing the bit in the greatest show which is belting I thought you had to shout but it's not now I learnt it I get a solo and all the glory lol XD but still I do this practice every time before school
It definitely helps. I have to have this video bookmarked to come back to when I feel like I'm losing it. Lol this is perfect! You're great! Hope to take vocal lessons soon!
u are a mad genius
Thanks Jordan!

Hi Medeline my name is IDIT , and I'm a voice teacher from Israel
Enjoyed your lesson so much. i teach that tecniqe for acouple of years just use deferent terms. thank you so much
You are just awesome. Love your tips. I've learned all the steps you mentioned over the years but oddly never understood them in the context of belting. Thanks!
You remind me so much of Emma Stone. And I think she's awesome :)
+Jaden Lukash That's just about the COOLEST compliment! Thanks friend!
I was going to say the same
Jaden Lukash omg, now she looked so familiar 😂
I just discovered your channel and I love it! I had to quit my vocal lessons after 5 years and now I searched for some good warm ups on youtube! glad I found you :)
So glad you're here! Welcome to my channel!
Finally someone knows to explain how this works.
When she said ''MA! MA! MA! MA! I was hollering with laughter! lol!
I absolutely love your singing techniques. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you Sara!
very clarifying and helpful!! thank you very much for the video. love your channel, by the way.
i've been belting (well, more or less, most of the time i was squeezing my muscles and screaming notes, actually. sometimes my throat used to get hurt after singing and i just didn't know what to do about it) for 2 years and i used to call it my "second voice" (because my chest voice is very heavy and i do not usually use it for speaking, only for screaming). as you can see, i had no idea what it was, and no singing teacher has ever told me about the belt. now everything makes sense, haha.
Beside stating the obvious about you being a good teacher I should also like to say that you are highly interesting to watch. I have watch this video many time just to see and hear you do your things.Thank you Madeleine for being so wonderful and putting your videos here. Wish I was nearby.
+Gregory Sarma That's super sweet! Thank you so much for watching! Glad you're enjoying the lessons.

Madeleine, You have really great clarity in your communication and you are an awesome vocal coach. I want to utilize your techniques to improve my mask. I started singing in my church choir with more classical styles and really need tips on getting in touch with my nasopharynx. Thank You Jan
Oh my goodness... I had so much trouble with belting but it's going way better after just doing this once!
Very good lesson indeed!!
I just discovered your channel, Madeleine - thank you, these exercises are helping me expand my vocal range and fix vocal fatigue.
Thank you Madeleine. This is very clear and I am going to practice it faithfully.
