Visiting PEGGY'S COVE Lighthouse + POLLY'S COVE Hike | Our Epic Road Trip in NOVA SCOTIA, Canada!

  • Our road trip in Nova Scotia continues and in today's video, we'll be visiting one of the most popular attractions in the whole province: Peggy's Cove! Peggy's Point Lighthouse, also known as Peggy's Cove Lighthouse, is pretty much an iconic symbol in Nova Scotia. This classic red-and-white lighthouse sits on a granite outcrop and it very well may be the most photographed lighthouse in all of Canada.
Normally, during the summer months, you can expect to find hundreds of visitors walking across these rocks, but we visited in summer 2020, which explains why we had the whole place almost all to ourselves.
As for the town of Peggy’s Cove, it was founded in 1811 when the Province of Nova Scotia issued a land grant of more than 800 acres to six families. The settlers relied primarily on fishing, though they also farmed and used the surrounding lands to raise cattle. By the early 1900s the population had peaked at about 300, and the community had its own schoolhouse, church, general store, and lobster cannery.
Today, the population of Peggy's Cove is much smaller with approximately 30 residents, and while it still remains a fishing community, it’s economy does rely quite heavily on tourism. There are plenty of cottages, restaurants and souvenir shops to choose from, but I think if you really want to experience the charm of the place, it’s worth spending the night so you can see have the place all to yourself once the tour buses and day-trippers (like us!) have gone.
After visiting the lighthouse, we drove to nearby Polly’s Cove. This is a 3.9-kilometre loop trail through coastal barrens that offers numerous look-offs and cliff views. We only completed a portion of the trail since we had quite a distance to cover before sundown, but we really enjoyed what we saw.
We hope you enjoyed this episode of our road trip in Nova Scotia and we'll see you in the next video where we explore Tatamagouche!

I am glad that you mentioned the black rocks. Its pure common sense, but unfortunately many have died slipping on them and still do.
Nova Scotia is one of my favourite provinces so I am loving this series.

Ahh Peggy's Cove, my old stomping ground. Started working there as a safety/security officer (official title was... ugh... Rock Patroller) in 1998. Yup, the year Swissair flt. 111 crashed into the water 8 miles from the lighthouse. The gov't shut the rock patrollers down in 2000, and I went to driving & guiding tours out of Halifax to Lunenburg/Mahone Bay and Peggy's Cove. Ya need to be there during a storm...(nodding vigorously)

With COVID and our mandatory 14 day isolation for travellers outside of the Atlantic provinces' bubble our tourism industry has been hit very hard this year. I see you guys have a penchant for wines. 🥂🍾Nova Scotia is an emerging wine province for its favorable microclimates mainly on the Annapolis Valley facing the Bay of Fundy. Hope you get to check that out on your next visit. If you love Lunenburg, you’ll definitely LURV Annapolis Royal.
And of course, the Fall colours of Cape Breton Island at its peak (second to third week of October). And yes the rest of Canada thinks NS rains, fogs and snowmageddons. Many parts of the province including Halifax, actually do not hold snow long. I am not sure if someone suggested Carters Beach (1 hr fr Lunenburg further South) to you and Crystal Crescent Beach (30 mins fr Halifax)-they have Caribbean-like turquoise waters only that they’re usually almost all the time glacial. 😂 But absolutely pretty! ⚓️

Jan 2020 - Please be aware that there is a mammoth viewing deck planned for construction at Peggy's Cove by June 2020, with cantilevered portions of the deck that will necessitate grading the granite boulders, pouring tons of concrete, and irrevocably changing this iconic view forever from many view planes. If you are concerned about this issue, and want more information, join the FB Group, Save the Natural Beauty of Peggy's Cove. Over 700,000 visitors go to this site annually, and if they do, they won't see this view anymore, unless the plans of Develop NS are stopped or curtailed.

Just got to make to make the decision whether to book or not. Only thing putting me off is the testing and uncertainly of restrictions being reimposed by UK government or Canadian government coupled with all the testing it sounds stressful. I do feel the testing regime will be in place for quite some time, maybe years. Saying that I do understand and appreciate it is for everyone's mutual safety. Will give it a lot of thought... subscribed some time back...

It’s so crazy, I’m from Nova Scotia, Halifax born and raised (outside of a short five year “stay” in Alberta), and I feel like y’all know more and have seen more of my province than I have.
I felt I went everywhere but definitely have not eaten everywhere and I’ve never even heard of Blue Rock. 😂

Mate, please don't mess about with wounds that don't heal. Get thee to a GP. Here in the UK, they're doing video consults and can call in prescriptions to your pharmacy of choice. Don't know if it's like that in Canada?

Hi Reena, all of our travels this year have been within Canada - mainly nature escapes and visits to small towns. We did have to complete a 14-day quarantine in order to travel in the Atlantic Bubble, but it was worth it since we spent the whole summer out east close to family.

If your looking for a tour of a little visited part of the province with waterfalls, karst gypsum sinkholes, 500 year hemlock's, a healthy black ash (Nova Scotia's rarest tree), and it's own unique bit of culture and history, send me a message.
