I grew up with two brothers who picked fights with me and my brother from grade school to highschool. For those who don't know, his point was that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is ideal for self-defense because you don't need to actually fight head-on in self defense. The only time a fight is necessary, is when you flee and they still try to grab you. In which case, it becomes a grappling situation. In which case, it's all BJJ from there forward. That's why Jocko recommends Jiu-Jitsu as a starting point for self defense, with boxing, Muay Thai, MMA and striking being of secondary importance since within striking range, you're always free to retreat.
@@iSiNNER-G-_- disagree. Boxing is one of the most one dimensional martial arts there is. You have no answer for kicks, clinchwork, throws, takedowns, and any kind of grappling. I'm excited people are still producing offspring as smart, rugged and "defensive" as well as unbelievably simple and straight forward w/a "particular skill set", great regular features that can become stone when ready to fight if running away isn't an option. There are women like this, u find them flying combat helicopters, jets, and in the ring...or sometimes captaining a deep-sea fishing boat. And disgust, when all over the world victims are harmed, destroyed w/no one protecting them. Their leaders don't want them to protect themselves, don't want them to know what this guy knows. And many parents of bullied children don't know what to do, if anything. For a child it's about not worrying about getting hurt, it's about flaying the arms, kicking, striking back anyway to at least give a punch, just a little hurt, for defending yourself, if 1on1, bullies fear even a small hurt; or learning to run as fast as possible if more than that. Give Jocko 30/40 yrs. and there won't be what u call a "smirk" left, just resignation, if he lives that long.

Man, I felt this in my chest. I used to pick fights as a kid throughout my teens. Since I've been in my 20s I learned to avoid fights, even when I had all the advantages. At 41, I'd be either dead or in prison if I had kept it up.
I grew up with two brothers who picked fights with me and my brother from grade school to highschool. They are both currently serving life sentences for chasing down and murdering their sister's boyfriend. They beat him with a bat and then shot him with a .22 rifle. They were 20 and 18 in 2001 when they did this and they both had it made before they did it. The youngest brother was a state champion wrestler, Josh Shrum from St.Charles Missouri.
Jujitsu is not as effective as boxing for self defence..
@@iSiNNER-G-_- disagree. Boxing is one of the most one dimensional martial arts there is. You have no answer for kicks, clinchwork, throws, takedowns, and any kind of grappling.
