This is like watching one of those domino-effect videos that are so elaborate and complex, that you can't help but tense up and start to feel uncomfortable the more the stakes are raised and the further along it gets. It's only at the end of a flawless execution that you're able to celebrate in sheer elation at what you just witnessed: Absolute mastery. There was never a doubt that you would get through this flawlessly, but still we watch on the edge of our seats because it all hangs on a wire.
Nice tribute. I was 15 years old when Bonham passed. I was trying to save money to see Zeppelin in Los Angeles as my friend Darren said he could get a deal on tickets. Forty years later and we still celebrate/mourn our hero that changed rock drumming forever.
Your ear for detail is incredible, George. That's what makes you such an excellent musician. I hope you're able to start playing out again soon. You're hard work shows through in the results you get. Thanks for sharing.
This is awesome George ! It never dawned on me that he was play light notes on a overdubbed snare drum, but that makes sense. It also makes sense once those tom fills came in the snare was starting the fill, bc anyone with a musical ear would know those tom fills were overdubbed. Bonzo was an absolute unequivocal master musician, but he didn't have four arms. I like how you broke this down in your write-up. I did notice higher pitched toms - higher than usual - for sure. I wonder if he did that distinctly and deliberately bc there were so many drums going on - that he wanted to distinguish all the drums from one another - for a full sonic tone listening experience ? I could hear the drum outfit, the tymps, a timbale and Carribean steel drums. Some have tried to say some of those high pitched sounds later on in the recording are "Jimmy's electronic treatments." I would say the one thing Jimmy did electronically - was for sure the "swooshing phase" part near the beginning. Also some of Bonzo's tymp sounds - sound like it has electronic treatments or effects were added - at a few points - by Jimmy. Those high pitched sounds before the steel drums are not electronic sounds added by Jimmy are they ? It sounds to me that Jimmy may have taken part of Bonzo's steel drum notes and added electronics to those - to make sound differently and almost like those had that over electronic phasing on em - that Bonzo used heavily on his tymps - during his 1977 drum solo. It's not some early 80s drum machine fake steel drum sound - is it ? Lastly, about 10 yrs ago and prior the Wikipedia used to state "This is the only studio track in which John Bonham played double bass drum on, as per Jimmy Page. He used his green sparkle Ludwig drum outfit on this track." Those entries were removed. It's kinda disingenuous for anyone to lie about him using double bass drum. It's not criminal and doesn't diminish his insane feet talents. I'll finally state, which I haven't prior - I've played drums for 40 years now. Even when I first heard this song way back when - I said - oh cool - Bonzo used double bass drum on this. He definitely did use double bass drum and as you said - the phrasing indicates it. Ive heard it for almost 42 full years - those obviously double bass drums. I'm hoping to have the questions answered ? 😀🤜🤛 Excellent work again - you're a master. I have a few more questions to follow up with as well. I'm sorry to hear about your ticket application and the heartbreak. I remember when he died too. 😢❤💔❤️🎶🎵🎼🥁
First off - tremendous performance! Second: I was a sophomore driving in driving school when news broke over the radio. I had to stifle emotions. Third: Jimmy had so much to do with the success of the band including the line up and there is so much we will never know!
Your absolutely right about 2 bass drums. Nice backdrop to that time period. So sad but your talent makes people, other musicians appreciate the feel that Bonham felt by listening to you play it. I, for one dig the hell out of it. Traveling Riverside Blues rocked today too! Ivan kicked ass with that Fender Jaguar with the P90s in it. Sounds Really close to the single. Never heard them play that live that I remember that I can remember.... Masterfully done my friend!!👍👍👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼❤️
I think you are The most knowledgeable person on the planet about John’s repertoire through the years with LZ. This Segway’d into the Vistalites in “Bonzoleum Studio” with Terry. Man, those toms sounded fabulous doing the ending of RR, some DC, from different years; 71-73, 75, 79. Just nailin’ it!!🔥🔥🔥
Holly sht! Theres so much going on in this track that its hard to figure out what was the main take and whats been overdubbed, but you sir made a perfect reproduction, which by no means is easy to do. Big bow George, what a fantastic tribute to the man
Thank you, Pawel! That's very true, this is really just my interpretation...it's virtually impossible to know what he really did at times, especially that last minute or so.
What a great tribute George! Thankyou. And I enjoyed your personal comments too. My own experiences of that time are not too dissimilar to yours as it happens. As for the song - when it came out on Coda I remember thinking that it was a such a departure from his previous work which left me thinking that at this point in his life he was thinking of the future and where he might go with his drumming (despite all the boozing).
Duuuuuuuuuuuuude Absolutely freaking incredible and unbelievable! I literally had anxiety watching this since it had the same feel as Bonham man, let alone shear technique! Well done man!
Outfreakingstanding! I'm a huge Zeppelin freak guitar player of just over 40 years. I would love to jam with you! Just sayin' , you're awesome brother! RIP BONZO , we miss you bad! 🐉🎸🎶🎵🌌🧠
George you are a true bright spot in the world of drumming inspiration. Your dedication and appreciation of John Henry “Bonzo” Bonham is amazing. Would you be so kind to make a video sharing your pedal setup and foot techniques?
I'm not gonna mention any names but you gotta be pretty damned famous for the masses to recognize your birthday as well as the day you passed. 40 years ago to the day I went into Brook Mays after work and the whole store broke the news none too gently to me. That night my phone wouldn't stop ringing. It was the only time I regretted having so many friends. Hope you live a long life, George. Same to you, Terry. God bless.
JHB was one of only two people I ever cried for that I didn't know personally. The other was SRV. Miss both those men and their incredible music. Thank you, George - I used to listen to this cranked up in my car on the way to work in my Navy days.
Awesome tribute to a legend who left us way too early. Seriously great job George. Coda is like a Bonzo greatest hits album. Every song on there showcases his genius.
That was truly incredible George! We all cannot see the MAN playing this himself but this really is the next best thing. I really enjoyed watching this on his day. Thanks for doing this.
Well that description answered all my many questions. Lol. Great great job, George! That was very cool as I’ll be studying this recording of yours for eons, now. Like u said, there’s nothing really to go off, other than the album. You did a phenomenal job, once again. You are such a pro fo show!
Amazing work, George! A testament to your absolute skill at your craft. Bonzo played this with double bass drums, and you pulled it off flawlessly with one foot. I reckon he'd be quite proud, if not flat out impressed!
I always loved this track from " Coda " & even though I was only 9 it blew me away & so began my journey of figuring out not just John's playing but how he could get that hard hitting sounding coming off of them & 46 years later it still sounds amazing & my non musician friends who just love Led Zeppelin as musicians & of course their songs & albums always more often than not us talking about how did John get that sound that became his signature sound! And to be honest I don't think we really ever want to know , which is difficult for me as I started out on drums before moving on to play bass guitar & I always love to decipher & break done bass lines & what drummers are playing but with thus track & Led Zeppelin I'm happy just to get that feeling everytime) I listen to them & thinking WTF! When you break down & work certain instruments parts down, of course its great , but many should just be left alone & I've only done this with a few musician's as I just want to listen & marvel at what's being played & when you decipher drum or bass parts it can sometimes take away the beauty of not knowing & just enjoying what you hear... Unfortunately Bonzo passed away just as I was turning 13 & would've been allowed to go & see LED Zeppelin Live but at least the great always leave parts of themselves behind that makes sure we couldn't forget them as they just stood out... I did manage to see Jack Bruce/Ginger Baker & Gary Moore when they got together to form the power trio of BBM toured their album " Around The Next Dream " & the 3 alphabetical letters were the initials of their surnames & just watching these 3 virtuoso players blow the backing band away which was , I think a 7 piece band , was amazing... I feel for previous & today's generation as they didn't grew up on the amount of top drawer best of the best musicians & their music the way we did & it was wall to wall of great & ground breaking solo acts & band's that we thought would always be there but alas the Music Industry is a sad pale imitation of the giant it used to be... Sure there are some great solo acts & band's but nowhere near the sheer volume of constant amazing acts that you couldn't go & see each of your favourite solo acts & bands as there wasn't enough days in the year to fit them all in... Spot on drum cover of one of my favourites of Bonzo's playing on the drums & it still sounds amazing today as it did 46 years ago... In light of this still ongoing coronavirus stay safe and healthy wherever you are in this world... .....
Way to go George, that was great. Thanks for sharing your story as well. While you were at Lane I was on my way back home from Weber with Rich when I found out, I remember it like yesterday. I still have that newspaper less the form being cut out, I think it's folded up in my live album cover. Thanks buddy, hope to see you soon.
Thanks Tony! Man, I wish I had kept all my memorabilia....some things went missing over the years and that was one of them. Cool you still have that. Remember when we carried Buddy Rich's gear on his bus for him though?? I still have that autograph.
My buddy went down to the tribune that day and got the first edition, literally hot off the press. He was so bummed, and talked about it at minimum 3 million times lol......, sure he will still tell anyone who will listen.
Wow. Congratulations on an awesome flipping tribute! This was really enjoyable and I will say the same thing to you that I said about the original Bonzo’s Montreux when I first heard it… truly thunderous!

Awesome George! I think it only fitting you did it one jack rabbit foot style, John Henry would be proud! I'm in total agreement with you that there must've been a second kick. You nailed the drum sound/tuning too
Only missing is Terry in the back playing the Steel drum parts

Yes indeed!!
That rocked so hard, it's sound will travel all the way back to the 70s and give Bonham some ideas.
Best UA-cam channel on UA-cam for Bonham stuff
