Man was cussing out the cymbal.. then when you played it, I couldn't believe my ears. Beautiful stuff mate. I can hear all the love and complexity in that cymbal ❤
this is honestly a pretty nice sounding ride. its very special sounding but its definetly something i would try out. it has an awesome wash . great job
I like " Big Shirley" `s unique attributes; nice bell tone, clear ping, with a full and dark expansive crash. It`s like a hybrid ping ride meets dark medium crash meets swish without that uncontrollable upturned edge. With the right stick and musical forum this cymbal would shine.
For me, I'd have to be a better player to get the sounds I want out of it. But that says more about me than the cymbal I think. Fun video! Btw, that guy really plays with authority. He seems super fluid and relaxed but then he hits a fairly big ride and it just goes flying!
This was such a great watch! Really fun to see you review your old work. I've just barely dipped my toe into the world of cymbal making / cymbal mods, and I'm already having so much fun. Inspiring video as always. And don't be dissin' Big Shirley. She may be aggressive, but she's great once you get to know her. 😆
Title is clickbait. ;) I love it! If I played it in a shop my first thoughts would be that it needs a strip of gaff on the bottom midway between the edge and the bell to chill out the highs. I'd play that in a funk band if it didn't have rivets.
What I loved in this video was two drummers played the same setup and same cymbals. To me it’s sounded different depending on who played. I also have a lot of recent experience of near field vs far field sounds, as different frequencies travel through air differently.
I dig it for some strange reason. A few years ago I would have hated it. Ears change Seriously, once the music cranks up, the trash can overtones aren’t noticed as much
It sounds pretty to my ears! DIRTY but damn it has character! ....I acually have an even dirtier and darker sounding cymbal. A vintage Ajax with four Pop Rivets installed (yeah). It's absolutely insane but pretty quiet.
One thing i found from over hammering my 18 inch b8 crash/ride, is that you can still change the sound by drilling holes or sanding down the cymbal. It finally turned out trashy dry, odd.. Then you always have the ozone option with bad cymbals, i think..
Man, I would put this on my far right in my jazz set up for any gig. Lots of jazz rides I'm finding are getting rather homogenous in sound pallet, there is so much room for unique sounding cymbals in the market right now. Maybe it's time to re-create them as the Founder's Series or something?
Depending on the musical purpose , this is a good cymbal. I've heard pot lids from Meinl which don't even come close...they sell for about 500.-... Nice playing btw.
If you listen to old school jazz drummers, some of them used ride cymbals that sound like that. I personally do not like the sound but in the right jazz context it works.
Wow!....so that's genesis aye? 😏👍 Of course "vibe and cool" are in the eye/ear of the beholder. Dark nasty trashcany and clanky has it's place. This one definitely has it's place, and from the front it sounds eerily close to that old K. And to be honest, I've heard a good amount of current day boutique cymbals that sound very much like this.....and very expensive! Bottom line you've still got a very happy customer all these years later. Job done! 😉👍
Sounds like the highly sought after K Custom Dry Complex Gen 1 Bill Stewart model...there's money to be made from cymbals that hiss like this, just sayin'!
Man was cussing out the cymbal.. then when you played it, I couldn't believe my ears. Beautiful stuff mate. I can hear all the love and complexity in that cymbal ❤
Zildjian would sell it for $700
Some days I just dislike all my cymbals. It’s such a strange matter.
Same with drums.
the sound of this cymbal reminds me of cold winter days
this is honestly a pretty nice sounding ride. its very special sounding but its definetly something i would try out. it has an awesome wash . great job
Thought this was the Meinl Mike Johnston transition ride from the thumbnail
Me too!😅
same -looks similar.
Terrific playing mate. The players back in the day had few cymbals to chose from (if any) but figured out how to play anything magnificently.
As a non "jazz" player this all feels like its in another language for me. Make me feel like I'm on level 1 and they are on level 10.
Jazz isn’t all that. All you need to do is learn “ting-ting-ta-ting”, and occasionally make some sounds like the drums falling down the stairs 😂
@@KinseiSensei *_Oh boy… 🤦♂️_*
@@kevindie bro tell me I ain’t lying. 🤣
@@KinseiSensei *_You’re not lying. That’s why jazz drummers get made fun of all the time. They’re an embarrassment._*
I thought you were trolling at first. Please tell me you are actually trolling, and not a dunce... @@KinseiSensei
In terms of quality, that thing CLEARS the ride I currently play.
it definately has character, would like to hear it without rivets.

yeah, that's a good description!
For me, I'd have to be a better player to get the sounds I want out of it.
But that says more about me than the cymbal I think.
Fun video!
Btw, that guy really plays with authority. He seems super fluid and relaxed but then he hits a fairly big ride and it just goes flying!
Geoff is awesome!

Gotta clickbait a little... haha
Bring back the early days Tim! That cymbal is sick!
It sounds great! I really dig it, I would use it for an effect cymbal, ride/crash/trashy love it
What I loved in this video was two drummers played the same setup and same cymbals. To me it’s sounded different depending on who played. I also have a lot of recent experience of near field vs far field sounds, as different frequencies travel through air differently.
Haha that thing sounds fun. Makes me wanna play some electronic DNB music
I dig it for some strange reason. A few years ago I would have hated it. Ears change

i would buy this guy

'We've come a long way baby
Learned a ton about feel today!
Sounds very swish-knocker to me. One for the shuffles
One thing i found from over hammering my 18 inch b8 crash/ride, is that you can still change the sound by drilling holes or sanding down the cymbal. It finally turned out trashy dry, odd.. Then you always have the ozone option with bad cymbals, i think..
I’ll take it over the K and also the first one on the left side. It sounds great!
3:59 Is that a silly lil' mosnter?
He's a groover, he stopped playing too soon 😅
I dunno about those divots, but that's a pretty cymbal. Nice and earthy.
I'll gladly take it off your hands :) Sounds perfect to me!
Please stop!!! Ahhhhhh! You’ve come a long way baby! 😂
As an amateur cymbal hammerer (amateur is a generous term here), that is a very familiar sound! Gonna keep at it 😤
hahah you know it!

Maybe that's what I should do! I already plan on recreating this cymbal.
Nice sounding ride!
My 2 cents.
I like it!
I think l'd love it with rivets.
I thought they were trashing the Meinl Transition Ride when I first clicked from the thumbnail, looks so similar
Killer video!
That’s a great alternate ride/crash!
Depending on the musical purpose , this is a good cymbal. I've heard pot lids from Meinl which don't even come close...they sell for about 500.-... Nice playing btw.
You’re crazy. That sounds and looks great. Really.

It's got a funky vibe to it pretty good stick definition I don't see anything wrong with the symbol you want to get rid of it?
Wow!....so that's genesis aye? 😏👍

Thanks!
Sounds good to me 🤷
That cynbal is amazing. It has so much complex character you just want to listen to more of it.
Love it!
Big Shirley series now in the works???
I’ve got the same horror after overhamering a 21’ Istanbul Signature
It sounds great!
love this cymbal, authentic!
Love it and wish I had one just like it. 😊
i think big Shirley is beautiful. not a jazz player, but i love the definition.
Lol it sounds like a k custom special dry 21” that i sold LOL the demo is still on my channel
On the far right with their style of playing would sound great. China ride.
Sounds cool 😎
Definitely not for playing the main character but it is interesting as a third or fourth voice
I thought that was a huge Byzantine Z ride. Try some brushes on that. sounds really nice . Just saying. 🤟
Bill Stewart would dig it!
Big Shirley paired well with that K!
Please I must know what the other cymbal is next to big shirley!
It's a 22" Tributary that is real thin. I think around 2200g. I feature it in this video: ua-cam.com/video/DVVZpYwBoFo/v-deo.html
It was a weird video a bit. What is the cymbal originally?
It was a Heartbeat Cymbal from their dry series.
No lie i saw its potential . Sometimes you need a trashy ride and just jugggle the tone
So... what is it???
It was a heartbeat cymbal from their dry series
It sounds great. Taste is a funny thing.
it actually sounds pretty decent when you use it with context
I really like it myself , cymbals like that beg to be played super lightly
Seriously that’s a beautiful sounding cymbal.
we all start somewhere. some, like you, end up masters. plus it actually does sound pretty damn good and it crash/washes like a mother
thank you!
Tbh, this would sound alright without the rivets IMO.
Meinl would sell this for 600 dollars
l love this cymbal. Love the trashy tones myself. Rock on
it's not a trash can lld. it's meinl, it's "exotic" and boutique. bored/rich drummers will buy it.
Honestly if you took the rivet out it would sound like just the dryest jazz cymbal
Dude absolutely RIPS on the kit and makes that cymbal sound like a zillion bucks
*Both dudes
I'm not a fan of big, dry dark sounding symbols. But played in the right context they shine. Big Shirley and the zildjain K complement each other.
that's the cymbal for the drum solo.
If you like dry cymbals - it does not sound that bad - I've heard worse in stores :-)
I'd play that bad boy! Errr... Girl... Shirley! :) Sorry!!!
haha!
Daheck! ill buy yung worst for a cheap price
We gonna see more craters in cymbals now?
naaaa probably not
Maybe it’s time to make a china👀
Worst? Nah. Killer one🤸
Sounds like the highly sought after K Custom Dry Complex Gen 1 Bill Stewart model...there's money to be made from cymbals that hiss like this, just sayin'!
honestly its pretty good lol probably wouldnt buy it but a vibe fs
Kung Fu soundtrack all the way... dark mysterious, tortured and unstoppable.
I like it haha
One man’s trash…
Sounds incredible
It's a crash ride
Doesn't sound bad at all
meinl would sell it for 500 dollars
a jazz china
It's ugly, piercing, and brash. I'd buy it!
If you hate it I'll be happy to take it off your hands 😆
Close your eyes……..swish knocker!
😆
That's italian?
It was a heartbeat cymbal from their dry series
Loves me some trash 🗑️
Juice and trashy
