Him being typecast is indicative of the amazing acting job he did in that role. Like Brando IS Don Corleone, Ken Osmond IS Eddie Haskel. He should be proud of that. Not many actors get to nail a role like that.
What a squared away well spoken man...even wounded in the line of duty...and to think he played Eddie Haskell...I have such fond memories of that show as a kid.
love him. it's nice to see he turned out to be such an honorable and upstanding citizen. far from what people would assume from his Eddie Haskell portrayal. just makes you realize what a fine actor he really was/is.
So sorry to hear of Ken's passing. I never had the pleasure to meet Mr. Osmond but if I had, I would have said thanks for being a part of my youth. Thankyou for the laughs, and most of all, God Bless! Just one of the greats of his time. Rest in peace, Ken. And thanks again.
As the Leave it to Beaver series progressed, Kenny's sassy (and even his sycophantic) delivery got better and better. He's still a breath of fresh air.
Since the show started in 1957, it was really a reflection of the first half of the 1960s. Take it from someone who saw the show when it was new and lived through that era.
Loved when he would call Wally 'Gertrude'. Like "Take it easy Gertrude" and then the classic Eddie laugh. One of the best characters in tv history. Obviously he got typecast because he played the part brilliantly.
Being typecast is a real compliment because you play a role so well and so believable that people see you as that character. In fact I just heard he passed away today and I texted a friend and said “Eddie Haskell died today”. I also belive it’s harder to avoid typecasting from a long running TV show than a movie. Sounds like producers never gave him much of an opportunity to prove otherwise. I mean, Tom Hanks IS Forrest Gump but he followed that up with so many iconic roles to the point he is perhaps our generation’s greatest actor.
Whenever I see reruns of Beaver, I am so happy when I see "Eddie." My parents loved the show. I wish I had been around to see it when it was a popular show.
@@susanb2015. Wow, strong words to someone you never met in person . She might have become one of your best friends. I hope no one judges YOU so impulsively. I guess I'm judging you now. Because ro me, you are presenting yourself as a rude, jealous jerk.
As old as the show is its still very popular. Its one show that has never stopped. The re-runs have been going since the show ended and are on TV two times weekdays
It's still a popular show. I've watched it when I was little. I watched it in my teens. I watched it in my 20s. Then there was The New Leave It To Beaver in the 80s, and I recorded every single episode. And I am still watching it on tv every morning. It's a classic and will never die. RIP Barbara Billingsly, Frank Bank and Ken Osmond.
NO ONE on television played their part better than Ken Osmond. I was born in 1949 and "Leave It To Beaver" was one of my favorite shows. I've heard rumors that when the show was cancelled in 1963 there was talk of a 'Eddie Haskell' spin-off, but for some reason it didn't come to fruition. Too bad too because it probably would have been a big hit. Just about everyone in the country knew 'Eddie', and most of 'em couldn't get enough of his character.
LITB was one of the greatest TV programs in history, it captured America at that era perfectly, like the movie American Graffiti it captured a time that will never be seen again, Mr. Haskell portrayed Eddie perfectly, everyone knew someone like him in school, love live Leave it to Beaver, I still watch the reruns when they are on !!
As someone else alluded to, EVERYONE knew an Eddie Haskell growing up. "Hey Wally, no way is your little squirt brother coming to the movies with us......oh, hello Mrs. Cleaver! I was just telling Wallace now nice it would be if Theodore could come to the movies with us." Priceless.
not to sound creepy, but Ken Osmond is still so handsome, he aged really well! He looks exactly the same. Ken was also in an episode of the Munsters! He played a frat boy, he was so cute. He was soooooo cute during his younger years, there's a kid I grew up with that is totally his twin, needless to say, everyone had the biggest crush on him all throughout grade school!
Ken Osmond's Eddie Haskell was way ahead of his time....While every other character on the show was typical 50's/60's goody goody two shoes. Eddie was much more relatable as a wise-cracking, prankster...He was by far the most beloved character apart from the Cleaver family...He was one of a kind, and has never been duplicated since....RIP Ken!
I always was thrilled by how Eddie was always so polite to Ward and June and such a wise guy to beaver and his friends loved leave it to beaver and I have the complete collection of the show on DVD, Rip Ken osmond Eddie Haskell will be loved forever
Saying he made the show is little a strong the fact is that everyone worked so well together the cast and behind the scene people probably not to many egos got in the way which made for a great show
I'm glad Ken Osmond cleared something up in this interview. I just very recently read that when he was in the LAPD he was struck by five bullets. But, he said here it was only three bullets.
I allways enjoyed Eddies character on the show. He really made it fun to see all the pranks he would pull on everybody. Without his character the show would have been to dull and 50s. But all the actors really did a fantastic job. Always saddened not to see them on TV after the show ended. Big mistake by Hollywood in my opinion.
just seeing this clip I remember when this originally aired always been a Ken Osmond AKA Eddie Haskell fan but I do miss Bill O'Reilly I'll say that I missed the show!!!!!
Oh !! How sad I am it was one of my favorite program for years I would not miss it , I was about fifteen when I use to wait to begin watching all the family and I do remember Him very well .resthe in Peace.
Looking for a cure for the blues? Look no further...even O'Reilly's smile reflex immediately surrendered to the Osmond/Haakell iconography! And that was a mighty sharp outfit Ken was wearing!
He was a wonderful actor. Loved how he would call Wally “Clyde”, “Gertrude”, etc. There was a touching episode where Eddie moved into his own apartment. He acted like he was living the high life, but his place was a mess and he was lonely and got a dog. Lurene Tuttle played his concerned landlady.
If the show had run a little longer Eddie (Ken Osmond) more than likely would have had a spin off of his own show. It's a sin he didn't. It would have been a big hit. It wasn't until the 70's where there were spin off of shows. Not taking anything away from the others but Eddie made that show what it was.
Weren't Petticoat Junction and Green Acres spin-offs of The Beverly Hillbillies? I'd have watched an Eddie Haskell show. I'd still be watching the reruns now. I've heard that Eddie started as a one-off appearance, but Osmond brought so much to the character, they kept him.
A lot of popular actors have had spinoffs that didn't work. Flo (kiss my grits), the Roper's, Fish( Barney Miller), and Joey (Friends) come to mind. Some characters are only successful in small doses. What if they had made shows like Lumpy Rutherford Gymnast, Barney Fife Sheriff of Mount Pilot, Edith Bunker Hotel clerk, Mr. Haney Salesman Of the Year, or Wilbur Post the Jockey LOL
An Eddie Haskell spinoff could've worked, and one was being prepared in 1963 when LITB ended. It would've followed Eddie having to join the Marine Corps after getting into trouble with the law. As they were preparing the pilot, they discovered that Andy Griffith was spinning off Gomer Pyle with almost the exact same premise, so they cancelled the Eddie Haskell series. It was kind of a shame, as everyone expected Ken Osmond to go far, but like everyone else on the show he ended up typecast for the rest of his life.
@NCISFAN1954 I met Ken a few years ago. Really nice guy. He and Frank Bank were at an antiques show in Tacoma WA. I had my camera with me and got some pictures of the three of us together.
Big fan here. Played the wise guy perfectly and convincingly. At times, I'd feel sorry for him. He was the guy in the group who had nothing to contribute, so he'd do anything to get noticed.
@NCISFAN1954 Yes, it was called The New Leave It To Beaver and ran for three seasons. Ken was in it, of course, and his real-life son played his son on the show. Preceding that was a reunion movie called Still The Beaver. It was filmed not long after Hugh Beaumont (Ward) passed away.
Eddie Haskell was quite possibly the slimiest conniver to slither across the small screen until J.R. Ewing and Creed Bratton later joined his unholy trinity. I love that Ken Osmond doesn't resent the character that gave him a bit of fame and money. There is nothing worse that child stars who do nothing but complain about the role that gave them success. Great interview!
Eddie Haskell kept me in stitches. TV Land use to play re-runs of the show but I haven't seen an episode in years. They need to go back to their original format and show all the 1950's sitcoms.
ME🙋🏾♀️ Imagine someone getting pulled over by Officer Haskell for speeding, during the 1970s. He walks over towards the window and the person looks out the window. Saying HEY aren't you Eddie Haskell from Leave It To Beaver😂

I love the show, and although Beaver was my favorite, Eddie was a very necessary character to bring in contrast, tension and humor. Eddie Haskell is one of the most hilarious television characters of all time. Nobody could have played him better than Ken did.
