Hats off to the recording engineer. Phenomenal sound. At first glance, this appears to have been captured as a simple stereo recording. The closer you look, you'll see additional sources - a spot mic on the guitar, a DI from the guitar pickup and cello, and (most likely) an omni hanging from the rafter above the xy mic. Someone clearly knows what they are doing. Well done.
I am familiar with everyone playing on this number except for Jim Miller who I was curious about because I've been learning to play old time guitar for the last several years, and was hoping to find a video of him playing Chinqaupin Hunting that showed more of the guitar. I started to research him on the internet and was sad to learn he passed away recently. I've found nothing but high praise for his musicianship, and plan to explore his music more.
This is a great idea. He was an early member of Donna the Buffalo and played on many of Tara Nevins records and up until recently was a member of the Western Centuries. Happy hunting
This is pure gold!! Makes my hair stand up and my feet move uncontrollably.
oh man, I can still listen to this and watch this performance over and over! this is killer.
I saw Molsky together with Swedish mandola player Ale Möller yesterday and omg, those are some competent musicians, extremely good singers too
I miss this, grew up on it as a kid. If any oldtime fiddler needs a solid guitar in Wisconsin, would play just to get back in. Playing tonight to Tommy Jarrell in the room tonight
This is one of my fav videos. Please check out our new old time music show The Appalachian String Inn. Live and Breathing
When you search UA-cam for "Old Time Fiddle Music" this is at the very top of the list ... and we can hear why. Perfect - Doesn't get better than this

This should be put out as a record!
This woke me the fuck up and made me feel like picking up my fiddle again. Thank you thank you! Special mention of dude in the Robin Hood hat! You are bringing the wild energy of punk rock to old time fiddle music! YEEAAAAH!
There is divinity in these notes
Rashad wore his cello all weekend. Had his own walking music and everything!
Love this performance, it's really alive and jumping. And the way Rushad Eggleston plays his portatif cello :) is electric!
Oh My Goodness - This is what music sounds like!!! aaaaahhhh my brain can't handle this level of awesomeness - I was raised on 90's pop music - there is way too much talent in this video for today's music mediocrity.
WORD !
Lol.. New fiddler? Welcome to your new addiction lol! How 'new'? :)
Kylie Howsam here’s a new addict too

I love three-part crooked fiddle tunes. Another such tune Molsky introduced me to is "Jeff Sturgeon."
Hell yes! Molsky et al. ROCKED this one.
Great music & great playing are timeless... this is a Classic...
Serious stuff there👏👏👏👏👍 more American Roots music🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 need to be played on corporate radio stations

What a wonderful performances, greetings from Friuli, , Italy
Masterful! Watched at least 20 times.
my Grand Mother loved Chinquapins.
What a group! Fantastic!
Played my banjo along with this to practice this tune and it sounds great, good job!
so so good.
The biggest mystery of my life is why anyone would give a thumbs down to something like this. some very weird haters out there. Always loved the tune, but this arrangement blows me away!
The strings sound so good together.
Finally I decided this must be the only answer. Russian trolls, maybe.
@@JasonHill_JCode I think the mentally challenged beings are Trump WH staffers!!! Now THERE is true dementia
I miss live music!
Goosbumps
Super tune , played great!
nice...I love Bruce's little chuckle at the end
Twin fiddles stirring up some magic... great energy!
This is the first video that I noticed Tatiana was playing a 5 string fiddle (lower string a C I believe)
@@janhargraves6110 I thought it was a viola it looks so big relatively xD
@@janhargraves6110
Yes, the 5th (Lower) String is a C.
So all strings are tuned in 5ths.
I play a John Silakowski(RIP) 5SF that I bought new 15 years ago.
That's too happy for words!
Bruce Molsky rocks! All I listen to is Bruce, Billy Bragg and Julie Fowlis.
crlchs three of the best folk musicians alive!
I like yr playlist!
Life enhancing. And more.
gotta listen at least 3 times
Thank you!!!!!
LUV this....can't get enough
Now that's the way it should be!
amazing!
best old time song ever recorded
the cello changes everything and twin fiddles and solid guitar
bravi!!!!
Fantastic ! And Tatiana is such a cutie.
I love how the same camera angle keeps coming back at the A part.
That. Was magic.
I grew up Chinquapin Hunting in Florida!
Well I'll be dipped, rolled and baked ! That was great !
Well, that is awesome
WOW!!!
YEAHHH!!!
très bonne musique
I think they should show up at like a contest for string quartets. Just because it would be funny. They were good though. I liked the harmonies especially. Also, I noticed that silent communication that only musicians understand. Toward the end, they all looked around as if to say "We've been playing this song long enough now right? Yeah, it's about time to end it next time around. Ready and... *hold on last two notes and stop."
please come to Arkansas so we can pick a few tunes
❤️
YEAH CHINQUAPIN HUNTIN
Parry time! Yesssss!
Exellent, just exellent. Why did this band go no further than one festival?
this is it
Wild cello player. He reminds me of the gent who played in the Plank Road String Band. My bass is too big to play like that. ( I am jealous)
Great!
I'm totally gonna count in like that - one, two, three - uh
Strapped on cellos! Oh no! I'm a middle school orchestra director. Are they gonna have us out there with the marching band next memorial day? That's my weekend away at the good jams!
Have also heard the Chicken Chokers do "Chinquapin Hunting" when Mark Graham used to be in the Chicken Chokers. And I heard the Great Bear Trio doing it, too.
If you listen carefully you can hear the banjo
Michael James Kott played the cello (3/4 size) on a strap. He played with Plank Road and Ace Weems and the Fat Meat Boys in Lexington, Va in the 1970s. I was in those bands and Bruce lived in the area then and played with everyone in all those bands and several times played in them. Rashad is aware of Michael Kott. Just want to give the devil his due.
James Leva new strap that Rushed uses - cellostrap.com
+James Leva >> I sure wish that Ace Weems and The Fat Meat Boys would be re-released
I LOVE the sound of the cello on the low end. It gives these fiddle tunes so much drive and power. There's nothing else like it.
Indeed. Michael James built this world Rashad lives in twenty or thirty years ago. What a great blessing to have had the chance to make music with him. Where is he now???
Is he in Santa Fe?
CHINQUAPIN HUNTIN
Very nice! Maybe you could also add the names of the other musicians to your video description.
I wanna party with that bass player!!
That's a cello though
Has this line up been recorded as a band? Do/did they tour? I'd love to hear more than just these three Pickathon videos...
It does not get any sweeter
Hey there, I'll figure a way to get married just so's you lovelies'll play at our wedding !!
I totally know a completely different version of this tune
Me too! Was confused at first, but I guess there are just two tunes called by the same name? I can't wait to learn this one, now.
5-string fiddle
The musicianship here is as good as anything you'll hear at symphony hall. One slip-up on the cello but its still easily a net positive.
Any chance I could use this recording in a video of mine? I biked through Appalachia last year and think this song would be a perfect fit for my narrative.
What key is this in?
+No profile It's in A.
Tatiana will you marry me?
Cultural Appropriation.
Go ahead and throw out your high and mighty terms, and ignore that this music is nothing short of awesome. It would be a great disservice if we did not get to hear it. Old time music has evolved since its inception -- the bonus is we get to enjoy all of it.
Nothing worse than a bass drowning out the fiddles.
There is no bass.
That was great, didn't expect such fun! I planted some chinkapins this Spring and I'll whistle this song....if I can, haha
