I come back periodically to just drop a line or two because of just how incredible this whole act is on these few songs. Absolutely LOVE the flavor Billy brings to Bluegrass. Ive been a huge fan since the beginning and ill continue to be a fan as he grows.
Billy went to school with my son and mutual longtime buddies. Been an amazing ride to watch his talent soar. First saw him at about 10 yrs old playing with his older brother on the banjo. They were amazing back then. Very unique Bluegrass player (Bluegrass meets Heavy Metal). Now Billy's one of the hottest artists on the planet. Well deserved.
Something unique from the states.its a young country so there's not a lot that comes out as a first or even stylistically regarded truly a united states tradition. But things like blues, jazz, or just the folk are delightful and distinctly American. That is, in my opinion. I'm not educated in music at all.
Hi from Canada, well, you and I may not have Southern ancestors, to use slang, kin from the Ozarks BUT we're lucky, fortunate as music lovers that people like, Bert Jansch, Richard Thompson just two examples from Britain and for Canadian's Bruce Cockburn and Garnet Rogers- this style of music is a fundamental ingredient that back a few decades ago, blended so perfectly with the music the Under 25's were listening to- Ewan Mcoll, married Peggy Seeger, Pete Seeger's sister, I think- so folk music and roots married and gave birth to a folk Renaissance in Britain in the late 1950's...Canada, bless us, always seems to lag but we got Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Gordon Lighfoot, Bruce Cockburn, Buffy Sainte Marie, an Indigenous woman who added her ancestral spice and last but first in my mind and heart, "wandering, troubadour, Leonard Cohen- funny, how algorithms work- I was listening to an Israeli klezmer band and mentioned, ENERGIZED in a comment, up popped these "cats"- Eric Burdon of The Animals wrote a song long ago that I'll always love: All Meat from the Same Bone- how right he was. If you enjoy The Blues check out a channel, Traveler into The Blue, think that's correct, close enough- you'll be amazed at his collection- Namaste from Geez, Mr. Zappa, It's Morning Already! Rubbish then, rubbish now- play Pete Seeger doinging The Bells of Rhymney then play it by The Byrds- magnificent both ways! Enjoy your weekend. Do some praying or chanting to get Putin, to knock off the destruction...
Ive been playing guitar lazily for like 5 years and seriously for maybe 1 and I'm finally at the point where I understand how much time and effort and love these musicians have put into their craft. they are galaxies away from strumming chords
appreciation of music goes way up once you make it to a certain point in your own playing where you can fully understand just how difficult sounding great can be. just have to make it over the first hump of the dunning kruger chart, the point where you can comprehend just how bad you are at something, lol.

(that's, 'God bless you ' ) in Spanish... I'm a minority here in Central Florida.... but they're not going away... ........😕
I just started learning these songs. So fun. These guys are monstrous players they should all three get credit the bass is so on. I have played guitar and recorded myself and the bands I've been in. I'm a blues player. Good music is good music. Billy is an incredible talent. I was concerned that there was nobody coming up. He is a true American treasure. Like SRV, Bod Dylan, EVH, Doc Watson Elvis, Bob Wills, Jimi, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Satchmo Armstrong, Eric Johnson, BB King, Asleep at the Wheel, and other American born talent. We have so much music to be grateful for. And Billy and his super talented friends are a national treasure.
I can hardly play basic chords correctly but that has given me the chance to have a jam with people and the feeling is so good, imagine what these guys must feel when they play like this together. Lucky fucks
All I can say is Wow!! I've never been a huge fan of bluegrass music, but Holy Hell!!! Only 1 mic and 3 acoustic instruments. All 3 players got my attention, however I'm much more appreciative of guitar playing, and Billy Strings blows me away! He barely looks at his left hand and can also sing!?! At 61 years old, I'm thoroughly impressed!!!!! 💙💙💙
Nobody has said anything so I will, but not only is Billy the best thing i have seen in 25 years, but Don Julin is astounding too. He could play circles around Grisman or Bill Monroe.
I have to say, Billy Strings has really built up a solid foundation of dedicated fans in a relatively short amount of time! I've been listening and playing this type of music a fairly long time. Don Julin, the mandolin player here, helped me produce the Comando CDs back in the late 90s when the web was young and mandolin players communicated on the Comando listserver. The Mandolin Cafe came around about the same time and a lot of us found out about Nickel Creek and a young mandolin virtuoso named Chris Thile around 1998 or so. Their self titled debut CD was very popular and they too developed a strong following that still exists today. Their songs showed maturity way beyond their years coupled with virtuoso musicians. Basically, Chris Thile reinvented what people thought possible on the mandolin and inspired a whole host of young super pickers, both men and women who are blazing their own traditional music / newgrass trails. In the early 80s, a very young and hungry multi instrumentalist named Tim Obrien left his native Wheeling WV to head west and form Hot Rize. Since then, he has collaborated with many artists including a powerful duo with Darrell Scott where they have made a couple records containing very strong material. Tim is a first class songwriter, musician and performer and has earned his place among the giants. My question is, neither Thile or Obrien ever seemed to get the amount of popularity that Billy Strings has achieved over the past 5 years or so, even though both have catalogues that are equal or even superior IMO? The music business is a profoundly strange place, I guess and I hope all 3 continue their successful careers for many years to come!
Having been the guy standing in the back behind everybody else for almost 50 years i understand that. However, a really good friend of mine said that if the bass player is doing his part nobody knows he's there. Sad but true.
If you like Billy's pickin, put Molly Tuttle on your radar. Stumbled over her listening to Billy's stuff. They're old friends. She is a mount rushmore worthy flat picker. Still unknown except in Nashville.
I have just recently discovered Mr. Strings. He is a phenomenal picker. The musicians he collaborates with are phenomenal as well. Music is a blessing to this world, and to see this talented is a honor. Be grateful we are alive when they spanked the down home music we absolutely love ❤️

and another in his ear hahaha

Just discovered this guy by accident.
I can't stop replaying it 🤘
Me too, Guys are phenomenal
Same here
All my 67 years listening to pickers Billy has an awesome signature. 🔥❤️
Dust in a baggie was my cherrie
Two years on, my words slightly changed from “this is the best thing I’ve heard” to.. THATS INSANE!
Here I am commenting on this again 11 months later. lol. Every time I need to get away from the news and politics I find myself right here. Great bit of mind meltdown relief!
Just stay here!!!!
Hands down the best version of Dust In A Baggie in my opinion. Absolutely amazing, all of them, through and through.
U said that dam right. And a Michigan native giving me a humbling at my own dam music. Carolina mountain boy whom was forced to bow to Billy
Best I've ever heard for sure
these are without question the 3 coolest men on the planet
The veins popping out of Billy Strings' pickin' hand are like hydraulic lines about to burst. Good God what a set.
You from Glen Arbor?
Young faces showing respect for and playing old music mighty fine.
I couldn't find the Bassist's name anywhere except some guy posted it in the comments. Very unprofessional KEXP
Not even in the pull down credits ! Shame !
All 4 camera men even made the credits
wow. unbelievable that kexp hasn't corrected this error yet
i agree, but it IS possible he asked not to be? People are funny.
Kevin Gills
I'm in the UK (Yorkshire) and in my 60's. Wow, I love this music. I cannot stop watching Billy play... Fantastic
Something unique from the states.its a young country so there's not a lot that comes out as a first or even stylistically regarded truly a united states tradition. But things like blues, jazz, or just the folk are delightful and distinctly American. That is, in my opinion. I'm not educated in music at all.
Yorkshire is basically Alabama (at least cousins seem to think it is), so not really surprising 😂
They are afraid that type of pickin
( Frank Zappa supposedly protested when Dylan went electric- are you that old, you remember? Rubbish then, rubbish now- play Pete Seeger doinging The Bells of Rhymney then play it by The Byrds- magnificent both ways! Enjoy your weekend. Do some praying or chanting to get Putin, to knock off the destruction...
The three of them together are just absolutely ridiculous.
It’s amazing how billy doesn’t miss any notes on the guitar! So crisp!
That’s skill.
I never leave comments. But I believe this is my favorite video of all time.
Damn, that's the best country that I've heard in a long time!
"Twenty long years for dust in a baggie." Now that some blues worth singing! These guys are awesome!
Trump will grant him a pardon even if he is white. ( ;) )
I did 18 long months for chemicals for manufacture in a Home Depot baggie
Ive been playing guitar lazily for like 5 years and seriously for maybe 1 and I'm finally at the point where I understand how much time and effort and love these musicians have put into their craft. they are galaxies away from strumming chords
appreciation of music goes way up once you make it to a certain point in your own playing where you can fully understand just how difficult sounding great can be.
just have to make it over the first hump of the dunning kruger chart, the point where you can comprehend just how bad you are at something, lol.
Called being a professional
One of the greatest UA-cam videos of all time.
Yes .. yes it is.
The best 12 minutes of video on UA-cam. Absolutely breathtaking! This is REAL music.
Amen.
2nd the Amen
Kevin Gills, Don Julin and Billy Strings at their best.
I went to college in western Maryland, and I got turned into bluegrass music. I love it. I call it happy music. Yeah
The way that the first part just went right into Dust in a Baggie was awesome!!!
I discovered Billy Strings in 2019; it was a good year.
Their you go brother!! Find that goodness!! I love it man
You should see him live if you haven't.... absolutely amazing.
Thats why 2020 is f'ing awesome for me :)
I just found him!
All I can say is... I was born and raised in East Tennessee... and now I'm looking at a palm 🌴 tree.. I feel like I'm back home when I hear Billy... YEEHAW!! ... and Dios te bendiga.. (that's, 'God bless you ' ) in Spanish... I'm a minority here in Central Florida.... but they're not going away... ........😕
Billy strings is one of the greatest musicians ever and I love just chillin smoking a zoot Respect Billy dude keep them awesome tracks coming
Watchin these guys play is more addictive then any dust in a baggy
Don't understand the hate some people have on country music, that music is a true banger
Its people like him that keeps this music going.
I can hardly play basic chords correctly but that has given me the chance to have a jam with people and the feeling is so good, imagine what these guys must feel when they play like this together. Lucky fucks
I've never seen music playing people like that, absolutely awesome 😊
All I can say is Wow!! I've never been a huge fan of bluegrass music, but Holy Hell!!! Only 1 mic and 3 acoustic instruments. All 3 players got my attention, however I'm much more appreciative of guitar playing, and Billy Strings blows me away! He barely looks at his left hand and can also sing!?! At 61 years old, I'm thoroughly impressed!!!!! 💙💙💙
If you think that's impressive, you should check out Doc Watson. He was the blind guitar picker that originated the flat picking style.
Nobody has said anything so I will, but not only is Billy the best thing i have seen in 25 years, but Don Julin is astounding too. He could play circles around Grisman or Bill Monroe.
ANYONE ELSE WATCH THIS DAILY?!
Me
Brady Ross
I just discovered it a couple hours ago but I’ve watched three times so far.
Seriously killer playing, and great songs!
Guilty
yesss
me!
Really good work by the music engineers for the clean sound
“20 long years for some dust in a baggy” has gotta be the catchiest shit I’ve heard, hell of a good job.
That’s one hell of a good string band. Masters locked into solid timing, and playing fast enough to catch fire. Hot rod fingers.
Love to see Billy and Punch Bros get down.
Billy is special that's why. Fkn comes around far less often. I love Thile and Obrien, but there's just something about Billy that is the music.
7 years later is still just as good. I think i was 4th commenting and 12 watching this video. Had no idea Jella Biafra was this good. 😅
Having been the guy standing in the back behind everybody else for almost 50 years i understand that. However, a really good friend of mine said that if the bass player is doing his part nobody knows he's there. Sad but true.
Billy the kid is tearing up America with that truly God given picking talent. Truly a one of a kind.....I really appreciate him and his music...
I have listened to this an unreasonable number of times now...so good!! Thanks KEXP for introducing me to this!
Explains the problem and the views🤣ha
We've watched this a few as well! Look at that short hair and remember lol )
Me too...
And singer
I am watching this because i watched Billy with Tommy Emmanuel and it led me to this, such great talent everywhere.
2:39 expressions worth a thousand words. It´s not about him playing music anymore. It´s the music that´s playing him. Love it
The feeling... thats where it's at
Im pretty sure it was his face playing the guitar.
Respect fellas. This music takes me back to when grandpas house would turn from a quiet night of heehaw, then a knock at the door and at 10 pm grandma fired up the stove and bluegrass shook the walls till 4 , 5 am sometimes. As a kid this was a jackpot for an evening of hoping around and stompn even our youngster feet to some kick ass finger pickin 😎. Thanks fellers.
Even in the fucking forest KEXP still delivers the finest audio quality. Im in awe every time KEXP posts, the genre doesn't matter its always fantastic.
Kevin Gills on the bass everybody 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏
Watched this a hundred times now. Never fails to blow my mind
I stumbled upon these guys by accident, but what a fortunate accident it was. Tremendous uplifting, joyous music, played by maestros. Love it.
This is absolutely fucking amazingly excellent!
imagine acidentally stumbling cross this in the woods lmao
Right when the edibles are kicking in.
Only one Thing to do. Open the beers and have an awsome party
Side quest
I keep coming back to this and I'm never disappointed. These guys can play.
I am so happy that this bass player is getting so much praise in the comments. He is very good, very very good, and his position is overwhelming important for this group.also I’m a guitar player so don’t judge.
This thing you’re feeling happens when people become music
I remember the first time I saw this video. It completely changed my life and the way I listen to music.
I bet that bass player can keep a rythm better than any watches 😂
The beat is in Kevin's bones, I swear to god.
Kevin Gills
Foo shoo.. Woooo weeee
@@Christian-my4dp hell yes..many thanks from Hoosier land...home of Bill Monroe campground and John Hartford festival. Hes a bad asssss
Dude keeps better rhythm than my heart.
I watched this one last night sitting in the dark on my deck. I enjoyed it so much, well here we are again tonight.😎
Comeback here every month or so to relisted. Thank you Billy for trying to save REAL country/bluegrass and keeping it real.
It’s awesome to watch Billy blow up over the years. I got to see him headline the summer camp festival for two nights last year and it was amazing!
I saw his video on UA-cam uploaded by a fucked up friend. On a dirty couch. In a trap house. Meow he's a Grammy award winner. Good for him.
@@jonw12 yeah I remember seeing that video years ago that was how I found him lol he also played at a small Ohio festival by my house called hookahville when he was first starting out and I’ve been told I saw him but I don’t remember it lol
As former security at music events i appreciate that these guys are wearing their wristbands. Talent often want to think their face is enough to break security protocols. Its nice to see performers helping others do their job keeping them safe.
