That is what a car lover does. Even the ones we don't particularly fancy, we respect for what they are. We can have our own favorites but even the supermarket car park looks like a candy store. Because even that boring corolla next to you can tell you it's story if you are keen.

We ran a fleet of 8, after owning the first one we said: “this is the best car we have ever driven/owned” so we bought another, eventually we ran a fleet of 8 for transferring guests from one game reserve to another. Then Covid hit, and at 250k km the crank snapped on a 2015 model, overtaking a truck up a hill towing a heavy trailer. We sold them all;( I then personally went and found a 2010 5.0 V8. Absolutely love it! Puts a massive smile on my face every time I drive it, not as much torque as the diesel for towing, and obviously heavier on fuel, but my goodness when it climbs above 3k rpm, things get really exciting, and up around 5k rpm you doing 7sec to 100kph and it’s making a great sound. Also no turbos, hoses, intake manifolds, and crank problems that the diesels may give. Does need the timing chain guides and water pump done before they get too bad, and then usual disco 4 stuff. But like many people have said, what you get from the vehicle far outweighs what you spend on it. Cheers for the great video mate.

I had a Disco 4. 4 years old, one owner, 44k miles, apparently fireproof. It was a fine thing to drive and you always felt it had lots of spare capacity if even it was needed. Then the problems started. First a leak on the steering hydraulics (£375 from my LR dealer) Next a front suspension bush (£295). Then, for no obvious reason it started pumping out clouds of dark grey smoke. I took it to a Land Rover Specialist Independent. He said it needed two new turbochargers, etc, etc, etc. - price £7600. I got it done. Within a month it was chucking out thick grey smoke again. Another new turbo - luckily this one at the repairers expense. I decided to get rid of it before something else went wrong. In the 14 months I owned it, I lost £12750. What a total heap of junk!

I feel your pain dude. I had one of the last disco 3’s and my story is similar to yours. Bought it at 90k miles. Got the £1500 timing belt service done just after purchasing then a month later all sorts of lights and warnings on the dash which turned out to be the high pressure fuel pump costing a nice £1300. Then the spare key stopped working and cost over £300 to have a new one off Landrover. The next annual service set me back well over £700 replacing discs, pads, and various worn bushes etc. That years MOT set me back just shy of £300 getting the rear brake lines replaced. My second year was spent with the engine management light occasionally coming on the dash then disappearing after a few drives. Most likely culprits were the EGRs. The annual service that year was £800 with a long list of things that needed replacing, as well as being warned that my gearbox had a bit of vibration and might need replacing sometime in future! A few months later I booked it in to have the gearbox flushed costing £250 and then a few months later a replacement wheel bearing which I can’t remember the cost of! Around the 2 year mark the suspension began throwing up a load of faults and warning lights causing it to just lower onto the bump stops. Cycling the ignition fixed it for days or sometimes weeks but it always returned sooner or later. Up to this point I considered my ownership experience to be fairly normal as the expensive bills were all consistent with what typical discovery owners put up with. I certainly wasn’t considering changing car but just accepted the astronomical maintenance regime as par for the course. Then approaching 3 years into my ownership the engine started knocking which got louder and louder quite quickly. After some non invasive investigation it became pretty obvious the main bearings were on their way out and rather than put a new engine in it I sold it to we buy any car for £4000!! Way less than half of what I had paid for it when I got it. This is the reality of owning Landrovers. I’m told even the new ones are plagued with reliability issues, and constant dashboard warning lights etc.

Been waiting for you to review a Disco 4 for a while Matt. I took the plunge last October a bought a 2013 V8 HSE here in Dubai (badged as the LR4 over here). I bought the best spec I could afford, and looked around for a while until I found the best condition model with the most complete history I could find. The one thing I realised during my search, is that Landy owners don't want to sell if they don't have to. At least 2 people said they would keep them if they didn't get the offer they wanted. I have to say that I now completely understand. This has to be the best car I've owned. Yes it's cost be a few dirhams to sort bits out (air compressor, full service including transmission, tyres etc), but I am soo chuffed I own this car now. It makes me smile every time I get in it. I have even started offering to run to the shops just to drive it. Your review is spot on, don't ever buy any used car expecting trouble free motoring. I was fortunate to only have a few issues, and still have money put aside as 'just in case' fund. Plus it's a big heavy beast and drinks fuel if not careful. I average 14.5l/100km, which gets be 500+ km per tank full. I wouldn't change a thing though. Pretty sure I'll be keeping this one for a long while yet. If you're ever in Dubai Matt, give me a shout and I'll take you for a ride to show you what a V8 does. It'll put a smile on your face too.

if ever in Dubai... not funny, but many ppl would never go to Dubai, period. Just sayin', bcuz things have become more illuminated in the past decade in the world, re who's who, who does what, to whom, etc. UAE is ok, but again, life is short, there's only so much time, and many nice places to go that make Dubai seem not well grounded.

My first D4 was a 2013 SE with the 5.0L V8 and drove it fairly aggressively in the deserts of Qartar. In 5 years of ownership, nothing ever went besides the usual wear and tear (LCA bushings, etc). Moved back here to the UK and picked up a 2016 HSE Lux and in 3 years of ownership, has been flawless. Find yourself a reliable independent LR specialist for service and avoid the mega-priced dealership servicing and they are quite manageable. I can't imagine anything else modern and comparable to replace it.

I sometimes wonder if everyone who had trouble with a Disco 3/4 (and those people certainly exist) made a UA-cam video about it. Yeah something will go pop and the parts prices will be a work of comic genius but for the most part they just do the job and do it brilliantly. They were a combo of LR's know-how and Ford's QC systems, probably the best car Land Rover's ever made. (You might want to fight me on that one.)

Being a BMW driver for 10 years, currently a G30 540d and as impressive as that car is (4.9s 0-60, M Sport etc) I cannot get enough of my girlfriends Disco 4. It might genuinely be the most enjoyable car I’ve ever driven. 110k miles and no issues other than usual maintenance. It even gets 33mpg on a run. I use it to transport items that would fit in no other car on the regular. There’s really nothing else like it. If the engine goes, I think I’ll just replace it with a 5.0 v8. At this point we have swapped cars on a permanent basis.

After 30 years of trouble-free Toyota/Lexus product ownership, I took the plunge 2 years ago and got a 2015 Disco HSE. Is it as well built? No. Does it feel as well designed and put together? No. Has it been as reliable? So far, yes. Is it as enjoyable? Yes, oh yes.
Your assessment is spot-on, the silliness of the electronic parking brake and the frankly ridiculous stop/start function equalled by the utilitarian brilliance of the split rear door, for example. In a way, this car is like an archaeological site in that you get layers on top of each other, each added by successive Land Rover designers, who didn't tend to preserve the organic whole, but rather slapped the new atop the old any old how. And not always very intelligently either, but much in the British Leyland Friday-afternoon tradition.
Notwithstanding all that, the plusses greatly outweigh the minuses for me, and as long as I don't get major reliability issues or cataclysmically serious breakdowns, I can see this car being a long-term keeper.

Only downside was the ZF 6 speed box having to be rebuilt at around 170,000km as it was "sealed for life" so land rover never serviced it and did have to replace the air compressor but that was under warranty. Actually they Do Not have 2 timing belts. They have a timing belt at the front of the engine and a fuel pump belt at the rear. Very different things. If the fuel pump belt breaks all it will do is stop the car until replaced. However a timing belt can do quite a lot more damage. Having recently replaced mine, myself (not through failure). And the so called crank failure is only a very very small %, do some more research. It is not as common as some make out.

It is catastrophic for the owner but only actually a handful in Australia, just played up a lot.

    • @1967CraigE
      @1967CraigE 2 роки тому +1

@@rossmclaren71 Also I will add that snapped cranks make up around 1% or less of all Land Rovers fitted with these engines (Discovery and RR) and was only a batch out of one factory I think In Pretoria South Africa before JLR took it back over from Ford. These engines are also widely used in Peugeot, Jaguars, Fords and several other brands and the engines built in other than this one factory do not suffer snapped cranks. A more concerning issue than the snapped cranks was the substandard oil pumps that could cause spun bearings and often when a lot of people talk snapped cranks they are actually talking spun bearing. Most by now have had the oil pump replaced. However if I was buying again I would want that checked. The problem is those with issues complain loud and everywhere. Btw at 3:37 you refer to the five seats being folded flat, but it’s worth noting the second row seats lower so they are in line with the third row/boot. In other words, totally flat. There’s a leather strap you pull at the front of each seat and then push the seat down and forward from above. Awesome car

They are complete tools and pull like trains. Budget for a GAP IID tool too so when the error lights pop up you can fix it on the move. You didn’t mention the snapping crank problem which is why you should always say a little prayer before driving off. Don’t let that put you off, or the fuel consumption, they are amazing cars.

I purchased a 2012 LR4 HSE for the Wife two years ago. It does require maintenance, so don't put it off. We live in the US so we have the V8 at 375 hp & torque. If the timing chain breaks, which ours did, the valves hit the pistons, causing the head to be rebuilt. You will here the chain when it starts to go bad so replace it imediately. We do Love this Truck how ever. It's Fuji White with light biege interior and it is still an absolutely gorgeous truck at 90k miles. It is also a beast off road. I have had Jeeps, Suburbans, Ram Chargers a current diesel 2021 Colorado ZR2 etc and this LR4 is more capable than all but the ZR2, with street tires off road. I have pulled out large trees, fence lines and used it as a truck and it doesn't even grunt. I also pulled out the ZR2 when it was buried in some deep mud. It also carries a hint of class and elagance and my wife just adores this truck. It holds seven and some gear and the interior couldn't be nicer for a 2012. I would stay away from the super charged Jag V6 that these evolved to in later LR4 years in the US. Would I recommend someone to buy one. Yes provided they had money to maintain it and put all the premium gas it drinks. Its now an eleven year old truck and still turns heads. I have fixed a front left side sun roof leak which had water in the floor board and the air compressor replacement myself. If the vehicles holds up well after the major engine repair and the wife gets a new truck some day this may get a 2 1/2 inch lift and 33"s. If you haven't seen one on 33's search for it.

Great review. I have the 2013 LR4 (American model) with the 5.0 V8 which I absolutely love. Bought it at 70K miles, spent some dollars to replace all the fluids end to end and swapped the LR3 wheels onto it so I could run 18” wheels, and then took it on an epic 1800 mile desert trip. Absolutely love this truck. I’m 30,000 miles on so far and it’s been brilliant. The key is to find a great and trustworthy independent LR mechanic to keep it in top shape. I’ve been eyeing L322 and L405s but your video makes me realize I’ve already got a great truck!

The 2-7 TDV6 usually does MEGA mileage without problems, the problems seem to start on the 3 litre tdv6 which has a bigger power output and that seems to be the problem, crankshaft’s snapping seems to be a problem if driven hard and repair’s are very expensive,if you go for a Range Rover go for the 3-6 tdv8,it’s chain driven engine is bomb proof and there’s very little difference in fuel consumption if driven using it’s torque rather than it’s Revs, never heard of a crank snapping on the 3-6 tdv8 myself but someone might somewhere. The 3litre v6 has a bit of a reputation for this crank problem,my daughter has a Velar with that engine and I’ve told her once the Warranty is up to get the extended R/R Warranty for peace of mind.

I guess I’m one of the lucky people - I have a 2012 5.0 V8 Disco 4. Well, actually an LR4 as I’m in the US (although originally English/British). Having a Jag XK8 with the 4.2 V8 (and loving that car!), I “discovered” that you could get a Disco 4 with a 5.0 Jag V8. I thought to myself, “what is not to like?” - and so it came to pass. Years ago, in the Army in Germany, we could get tax-free motors, and I had a TDi Disco 1/facelift, and then the (Rover) V8 Disco 1/facelift. Nice as they were, the Disco 4 is vastly superior. Disco 1s were based on RR Classics, and the D4 is larger in every dimension than the RR Classic.

Here's another thumbs up for the Disco 4. I've had my 2010 model nearly 10 years now. Got it still under warranty and that's when the compressor went, so that was replaced with a newer one which is more reliable. But they do wear out the arms, usually the front lower ones first followed by the rear upper ones. Done them. Apart from that, just small things really. Maybe I've been lucky. But in any case, when they work, they are a real dream to drive. I've also used mine off road, doing game keeping work with half a ton of feed in the back, dogs in there and four muddy booted compatriots. No other car combines being a luxury express with being so capable off road as the D4. But you do need to set dosh aside for the bills. And the tax is crippling. You pays your money, you takes your choice.

I owned a 2011 reg but 2012 spec car that turned out to be one of the press review cars for the upgrade and which appeared in several videos. It was easily the best all round car I've had. Despite the many potential problems, the one thing that prompted me to move on was the widely reported crank bearing shell problems. This was reinforced after several conversations with the LR indy I used for servicing. He always had several wrecked engines in for repair where possible or replacement. The fact that LRs own warranty wouldn't cover that problem was the killer. All of the other issues you can expect and I suppose you cope with, but the eye watering cost of a replacement engine was simply too huge to entertain.

V8 does 15 to 20 mpg. Diesel 30mpg. I believe the D3 4.4 petrol V8 hse is the most reliable and long lived by far. The diesels have all sorts of issues with age.. horrible job to replace timing belts, breaking crankshafts. The D3 still had a proper dipstick as opposed to the ridiculous and flawed electronic oil level monitoring brought in with the d4. Land Rover decided to mount it inside the crankcase with the hot oil, so fails and is an absolute pain to replace. The rear seat base can go down so you have a completely flat rear load area... Great for overnight camping when there are bears around. Yes, this is my North American perspective. I still have my d3 HSE V8 and I've owned lots of LRs. For many reasons I find d3/d4 the best LR ever. They can be great but do your research on LR forums etc. 4.4v8 is the most reliable and long lived.

I bought the cheapest D3 on the market with a bunch of problems from a seller who new nothing about the vehicle, got it for a bargain. Had to spend a bit to fix up the issues but parts are easily sourced out of the UK and there is heaps of information available if you fix stuff yourself.
Nothing had been serviced other than engine oil, so had to spend a bit replacing all fluids and doing the timing belt & oil pump.
Had one front airbag start to leak (after 12 years and 200,000miles it had done ok in my book), so repalced the front pair.
After the inital set of repairs it's been a great vehicle, the only thing I'd replace it with in a facelift D4 but the amount of crap I throw in the back (all seats folding flat is fantastic!) I'm sure I'd ruin a nice new(ish) D4 in no time, so will stick with my D3.

I had a 2010 version of this with 100k miles and exported abroad as part of an illfated move to Africa….it’s a very solid car. The engine is beautiful, super smooth and a big improvement on that terrible 2.7 unit in the Disco 3. Incredibly practical - 7 real seats. The infotainment is woeful and almost impossible to retrofit but a Bluetooth adapter and phone holder made it manageable. I’m only 28 so I put a body kit on mine and with black alloys to make it look less “farmer” and it gave serious G wagon vibes. Only issues I would say is that they are more thirsty than the X5 or ML/GLE equivalents and you feel like you could topple over if you go into a corner with a bit of steam. But they’re wonderful off road and smooth when going straight….if not for the anti diesel climate of today would still be a great used buy!!

11:06 I disagree. LR4’s are much cheaper to run that a RR (I’ve owned both and I am currently on my 2nd LR4). This is mainly due to the price difference in parts. For example, air struts on a RR are twice the price of an LR4 air strut-and if you have a Supercharged RR with the active dampening system be prepared to have a hole blazed $$$ through your pocket. Land Rover (as well as aftermarket parts manufacturers) up-charge the price on parts due to the Range Rover name.

Great Cars and no more expensive to repair than any Toyota Land Cruiser / Prado or Nissan Patrol. It is the annoying things that can cost money, but preventative maintenance stops most things. The most annoying failure was the front crank oil seal, that should have some sort of retainer but doesnt and can pop out. Which happened in my case. So as part of the process it got a new oil pump, timing belt and tensioners about 100,000kms earlier than it needed. The other things are compressor failure (inevitable), door actuator and if you get any water under the bonnet TCM module. Having said that an EGR delete and a decent fuel map and the 2.7 can go harder than a SDV6 3.0 litre. The only wish on the 2.7 would have been the 8spd. It is one of the nicest 4x4s I have ever owned and puts so many other top name 4x4s to shame off road easily. Yes thay can be expensive to fix but get some repair prices on Toyota's and Jeeps. The plus side with all Land Rovers is there is a huge aftermarket industry and parts if we buy them from the UK and have sent to Australia are pretty good. You do need to be mechanically minded though. I love mine most of the time but hate it at times too with stupid thing and the typical LR Engineering where engineers seem to either not talk to each other in the design phase and go oh crap when it is put together or are just grossly incompetent. Would I have another? Probably. But more likely will be an Ineos. Most of the ridiculing is based on myth and people with no experience with Land Rovers. We currently have a 2011 D4 with a lot of HSE options thrown in, A D2 V8 and a Defender TD5. The Defender in standard mode is hands down the best 4x4 bar none. But the D4 is more comfortable and not far behind. The D2 V8 is just fun to drive.

@@GGoblin1 Yes, the metal along the crankshaft between where the various conrods connect to the crankshaft is far too thin... especially between 2 and 3 cylinder (i think it was there). Trouble is there is no preventive maintenance you can do and no waring sign. Some engines last 300,000km with no issue and poor servicing, others break at 100,000 or less with immaculate maintenance. It may also be a metallurgical weakness on specific cranks. Some people think there may be an issue with an injector that causes stress on the crank, others suggest wading (hto engine quickly cooled). The same engine was used in other vehicles ranging from Jaguars to Peugeots (it was a Ford engine co/developed with PSA) and there were no crank issues. Probably not an ideal engine for such a large and heavy vehicle.

We’ve had a 2020 D4 for 4 years. It’s a family car and can fit three child seats abreast in the second row.
There was a bit to spend in the beginning - the stuff the previous owner didn’t want to fix - rusty brake lines and worn suspension arms, but since then it’s been fine - these cars are fairly easy to service if you’re that way inclined and as they have a dedicated following, there’s lots of how to videos on UA-cam, so you can do a lot of this stuff yourself. Oil filters, brakes and even the gearbox oil change can be tackled (you’re better off getting it flushed though). They’ll be around for a long time providing the engines last, they may be a bit wobbly and creaky but they’re built like tanks.
