I have. 2017 Discovery, no issues, no squeaks, great tow car (1.9 tonne caravan) average mpg 38, with the van 32 which does me fine, 40,000 miles still on original tyres.
Reliability is very important - more important than MPG as it can be an unknown and unpredictable cost. It is also the feeling that the car has let you down and difficult to enjoy it once you've lost your trust in it.
THIS IS THE BEST DISCOVERY SPORT REVIEW SO FAR! - THANK YOU. I've owned the exact same model for just over two years now, it's the same colour but with the black pack (roof, grill, mirrors & wheels). I agree with all your comments. It is a fantastic, beautiful car that is excellent on or off road. I don't 'baby' it and have even carried 20 sacks (500KG) of cement in the back without the car even noticing! I don't understand why so many people in Britain complain about it being unreliable. It could be that LR takes more care with export cars, though I think that is highly unlikely. Maybe it's just a 'British' thing where people enjoy grumbling about something that they should actually be really, really proud of. It reminds me of my Italian friends who take me to the most amazing restaurant in Tuscany and complain all the way home about how crappy the best meal I've ever had in my life was! - Some people will ALWAYS nitpick. The roads in my country are mostly bumpy and poor quality yet I have never heard a single squeak or rattle in two years, and have never had to take it in to the service centre except for the scheduled service. If you want the best out of the driving experience I recommend avoiding the large wheels and getting the 18 inch ones instead. I can't understand how people opt for 20 or 21 inch wheels and then complain about the bumpy, uncomfortable ride! And YES, it DOES deserve the 'SPORT' in it's name. Other reviewers say it doesn't, but they seem to take it too literally and compare it to a sports car. For me it means that it is more sporty than it's big brother the Discovery which sometimes feels like a Transit Van to drive.
I am on my 2nd DIsco Sport and agree entirely. They are fabulous to drive and do everything I want, including easily towing a 1.3 ton tin box. The amount of grip when hustling along twisty country lanes is truly surprising. I have generally found Land Rover to be actually more reliable than the VWs, Hyundai, BMW and Hondas that I have had in the past.
First time ever I heard Disco is more reliable than BMW and HONDA 😂😂😂! Forget about anything but Honda, biggest joke I have ever heard 😅😅😅😅Maybe you bought your VW, BMW and Hondas from scrapyard 😅

Great review! I'm with you on the reliability. I have had a 2016 Discovery sport for 6 months now and have to say it's one of the best cars as a whole package I've experienced. For me the most important qualities in a car are handling, powertrain, economy, styling, practicality, value etc. Roughly in that order 🤷. Reliability is important yes, but the best way to ensure that is by proper maintenance and use.
@@alterego6255 I traded the car in for a 2015 Mercedes C-class in march. It had an electrical glitch, where the Abs, transmission and power steering had a fault code and the car went into limp mode from time to time. Apparently it was a software problem, but the service department wasnt sure. But that wasnt the reason why I wanted to change the car 😂
Good video... reliability, for me being a serial Land Rover owner and fan has always been to who has owned it before you and was it abused or looked after. Simple as that... abused = trouble for every make and model.
Not right at all. Generally japanese cars can take a lot more abuse. The quality control is much higher. Theres a reason why Toyota has been ranking at the top ever since the 80's.

Sine Metu when did I say this? Every car needs basic servicing. Oil change, filter etc but a Honda for example you can put your foot down and abuse it a lot more because the engines are over engineered. Same goes for Toyota and many other Japanese brands. Japanese electrics are also the most reliable. Also look at the Japanese electronics industry in the 80s and 90s. They dominated the world thanks to the reliability of their components like capacitors.
I was going to mention this on the Evoque video. A close friend has an evoke from new, serviced by dealer within schedule, yet back at least every 2 months. She lives in a village in the middle of the Wolds and works as a surveyor. She's been left stranded 4 times in 2 years. An old boss had a Disco and that was always back at the dealer. Out of all the people I know who have a JLR product from new under 5 years old, I would say 4 out of 5 have had reliability and build issues from the word go. I would love a Land Rover, but might hold on to my Mitsubishi as back up just in case.
I bought this as a demo with 19500km almost a year ago and am really impressed, although miss the fun aspect of my previous Freelander 2SE. It has been fully reliable and delivered outstanding diesel economy, better than the Freelander to my surprise. The 9 speed gear box is a delight - have not encountered any hunting across gears in town mentioned in your review. The one sadness is I find the front seats uncomfortable, both too low and too wide - so I use two cushions to improve the position and feel - that's probably indicating I have weird anatomy, as others don't feel the same. The Freelander 2 had a wonderful seat and seating position... I also appreciate that the passenger seat has the same controls as the driver seat by the way. I really have had NO reliability issues with Land Rover since I bought the Freelander 2 SE in 2010. I thoroughly endorse the review in terms of the quality and capability of the vehicle, and love the styling. The ability to shift the whole back seat bench forward also creates an incredible boot space without cramping the passengers behind - and yes, the 2 small seats at the very back are not full adult size, but very handy for family.
I’ve had the 2016 version of this car for almost two years. Prior to buying I test drove an F-Pace and the full size Discovery. F-Pace drove like it was on silk, but I found the cockpit style interior too claustrophobic. The full size Discovery had gone past the sweet spot and due to the added height wallowed somewhat in bends. I have been absolutely delighted with the Disco sport. I did note some wind noise from the mirrors after a couple of days, but realised that this was mainly due to everything else being so quiet. Mine has the beige interior trim, which accentuates the interior space and luxury feel. Yes, it is thirsty in town, but otherwise pretty good (I live in a rural area) - on French motorways for example, (little traffic, no cones, no average speed checks where road maintenance is NOT being done), 43mpg+ is easily achievable. There have been no reliability issues. In short, this review accurately reflects my experience with this stylish and high quality car.
So now into my third year of ownership and still love the car. The weather here in Scotland has been horrendous over the last couple of weeks with heavy snow and freezing temperatures. The Discovery has taken it all in its stride. It feels so confident and steady on snow covered roads .
How can you question on would a cars reliability influence your decision?? I think about 90% of people do think thats top of the list on when choosing a car ?? Set up a poll on choices on buying a used car = looks = reliability = practicality = feel = comfort etc 👍see what happens

Any petrol head will put looks, sound, functionality and brand over reliability when buying a car. I've had loads of land rovers in the past and I don't buy them cos they'll never break down, I buy them cos they are so blooming spot on. They are such capable vehicles and are the tool to have if you're out in the harsh weather. Green oval all the way!
Of course potentials buyers would, if asked say that they want it to be reliable, you'd be a fool not to, but that doesn't mean it will be FOR ANY MAKE OF VEHICLE. Otherwise we'd all be driving round in Toyota Corolla but even so it doesn't garantie that YOUR Corolla will be.
I have a sport and what I like is that it’s not expensive to fix like most Land Rovers. Yesterday I went for a tuneup and it’s only 4 spark plugs and they sit right on top of motor, not on the side hiding behind other equipment that takes hours to move. It only took 30 minutes labor.
Hired one of these for a drive round iceland. I was quite impressed. Really comfy and perfectly capable. I noticed it had 170k kilometres on the clock but it really didnt feel like it at all. Id take this over the evoque any day. By the way, i didnt get anything like 40 to the gallon. 30 maybe....
This is the 3rd time I've watched this video now. 3 weeks ago I went and got a D180 HSE, MY 17. Well, you haven't let me down. I love it. I took my test in a LR Lightwieght in the 80s, had a County 90 in the 90s, had a Freelander 1 for the last 9 years. No squeaks or rattles at all, the infotainment has been fine. The auto stop/start is very temperamental, but it's a Land Rover, it's part of it's character. I'm wondering if it's a patriotic thing going on. My go to car has always been Land Rover and my go to motorbike has always been Triumph, currently riding a 20 year old Daytona 955i, thinking it's time to upgrade that to newer tech now. Great reviews by the way. Keep up the good work.

My point was reliability isn't a guarantee from any brand so surely you would choose the car you want based on practicality, price, styling etc and maintain it well and keep your fingers crossed, no? You cant buy a car based on something that you cannot see or touch or guarantee... Just my thoughts
It depends what you mean by reliability? If we're talking disappointment about rattles well that's one thing; however if we are talking about leaving you stranded at the side of the road well any car, new or 2nd hand can do that. Plus perceptions based on others perceptions and urban myths are not reliable. I've had lots of Discoverys and NONE on them has EVER let me down. Yes I might have needed to replace a window motor, battery, or other incidentals, but I've always got home with my family intact.

Very good evaluation. Reliability, Performance and Safety is always on top. Cant compromise with Fuel consumption. Still the SUV gives a good fuel economy level. Not too low. And the main important factor is the BEST PRICE tag for this quality ,RELIABILITY, and Safety.Very good. Keep it up
We bought a Sorento the same time as our neighbour (who is a friend) bought a Disco Sport. He’s had major problems with it, with the transmission packing it in twice. His wife has been stranded on the motorway three times due to electrical gremlins. Even when he got it delivered he had to return it due to poor paint quality on two rear panels. Like you, I’m not against the odd glitch or rattle. But his experience has definitely put me off. The Sorento has been trouble free.
A few years ago i bought a Disco, the electrics were a joke, i thought maybe it was a Friday afternoon job, but friends who had Disco's and RR's had the same issues, I love the brand but they do seem to go a bit bandy even when new!
Another great review. I bought the Disco Sport HSE 2017 for my wife. Your right on the money, great for the family. Has never let us down, but has saved us a few times. The quality and craftsmanship create a upscale vibe throughout the interior. We love the Disco Sport 🥰
I also have got a 2017 discovery sport hse any issues you come accross ? I just had my brakes replaced at 18k miles other than that all is working great no issues
I recently changed from a Freelander 2 HSE which I loved. Got a Discovery sport SE and the interior build quality has been a big let down. Not many rattles but very annoying and LR dealer failed to fix any of them. I don’t think it’s a comfortable either (especially the seats) as the old Freelander. Dynamically it is a much better car, but also lacks the character of the old Freelander. I have driven it off road and it is good fun and very capable.
When the time comes to replace my freelancer 1.....I want a free lander 2😆 my old girl just keeps on going (touching wood as I type) would like the new discovery 2015 but think we'll over my budget. FL2 HSE 2014 would be nice.
I have had 2 Discovery sports, both HSE models. The first one was a manual gearbox and I hated it. My BMW 5 Series was auto and i reluctantly changed because my wife had 2 hip replacements. Initially I bought an X3 and hated it, standard suspension but so uncomfortable after 50 miles or so. I loved the Mercedes GLC and I was so disappointed when after the test drive, my wife found it so difficult to get out of the car without brushing her legs on the door sill. The GLC is so much better in every category save the door sill and of course the off road capabilities. The Land Rover experience proved that. I too find the Discovery centre console runs your knee and it is a nuisance. I don't agree with Mat with regards to the fuel consumption though, my X3 and the GLC are both much better. In conclusion though I have to admit that apart from the centre console, the Disco really is a very comfortable car especially on long journey. My present Discovery has so many extras including the digital TV, easy access Meridian sound memory seats it goes on. But oh, the new Mercedes B class, retired and skint so dream on David. Did I mention this review? Well it was excellent, well done.
Just bought a 2018 hse petrol, use a lot round town wanted to avoid dpf issues, omg what a car, did a 90 mile trip round east coast villages using hill decent, lots of overtaking with the 240 hp. Averaged 32mpg I really cant complain, shes a keeper.
Had various Land Rovers for nearly 30 years, Freelander, RR Sports, and a Disco Sport and can honestly say they have all been reliable. Only time I got stuck was when I had a puncture on the wall of a tyre and the chemical injection repair wouldn't work so had to call the RAC. Never broke down due to vehicle mechanical or electrical issues. I still drive Land Rovers as does my wife and daughter and have no reason to change.
@@HighPeakAutos Dear Sir, I'm looking to get a 7 seater for my family. We have 3 boys. I am real keen to offroad ability. I love the styling of this Land Rover. But I'm terrorized by the reliability stereotypes of LR. I don't care for occasional minor squeaks or rattles as long as the power train, mechanical and electrical systems are reliable and durable. I am also considering the Kodiaq only because the 2.0 tdi is reliable. I would only opt for the manual box. Please, let me know if I can rest assured the Disco Sport is as reliable as a Kodiaq!
I love mine. It copes well with the extreme weather and poor roads here in Scotland. Off road, it’s excellent. I agree with all of your other plus points. I have a few negatives that prospective owners perhaps should note... Whilst fuel consumption isn’t bad at all, the tank is quite small for car that’s otherwise so good at long distances. You do need to keep a container of adblue at home at it won’t start if you run dry. Door handles are a bit dodgy (sometimes not closing properly) and the caps can fall off when jet washing. The covers on the tailgate gas struts keep falling off too. I miss the DSG box and adaptive cruise of my previous car (Audi), but have got used to driving the Disco Sport, especially sport mode when needed. Go for the HSE spec if you can - if nothing else because of the xenon headlights; the halogen lights on other models are piss poor. Best car I’ve ever owned? Probably.
Tim King You need to get LR to fix the adblue issue if the car fails to start. Mine tells me that the adblue is getting low and I then have @ 1000 miles (according to LR) to top it up again before the ems cuts the engine off.
Hi Tim, Good comments As of late 2019, the facelifted 2020 MY Disco Sport had the fuel tank size increased from 54 to 65 litres. Along with the mild hybrid tech which improved fuel economy, range per tank of fuel is much better. Once u get to 1,500 kms left on Ad Blue, u get regular warnings of remaining range on Ad Blue, so get it topped up before it runs out. Ad Blue tank also increased in size on 2020 MY Disco Sport, so more driving range before Ad Blue tank needs to be refilled. Disco Sport is a great all round car.
Usually a Sport saloon person, but this is Best all round car I've ever had, 3 years, no problems whatsoever. Even done a fair bit of off-roading here in Oz, up to its axles in mud/sand with low profile tyres but still never got stuck. On gravel corrugated roads at 100 plus Kmh it is smooth and still quiet, no rattles, squeaks, servicing free for 6 years, superb stereo (better than my top of range C63s Burmester system). Most impressive though was returning from a two week holiday to find our underground car stacker had flooded, it had sat for at least a week in around three quarters of a meters of water, covering wheels, exhausts and door seals. Upon lifting it out of the stacker I feared the worst to say the least, not a single drop had got inside, started first a time with no warning lights, what seemed like litres of water came out the exhausts system as my wife pulled away and that was it, no worries at all, very impressed. Had more problems with VW's, Ford vans and Merc's than this.
Amazing how many LR products still on the road with 150, 200+k miles on them for such ‘unreliable pieces of junk’ 🙄 Boring nonsense. I think some folk just have their pet hates. Sad people.
High Peak Autos I wonder how many people on here REALLY have LR products. My wife has that exact year and model. Zero issues, loves it. Just had 20k service zero faults

Hello Matt, thank you for the endless hours of calming entertainment you have provided. I worked in automotive development for many years, and the reason for the mountainbike-esque increase in gear ratios was both to combat stringent emissions legislation (which is also why most cars ditched the full sized spare so they could drop an inertia class) but was also to effectively combine the old low and high range boxes on cars like these. In theory they should pull away in second or third if they are at temp / not towing etc. In practise they can hunt alot, something that's often cured by driving around in sport mode. In any case, anything is better than a CVT isn't it?!
Bought mine second hand, and had it for 2 years now with no major faults so far. It's a great family car, extremely practical, and the kids love it. The one major flaw these cars have in diesel form is the exhaust architecture. It doesn't really work, and as a result causes oil dilution. What does this mean? If you do mainly short journeys then avoid the D150 and D180. They will not regenerate the DPF very well, and you will need oil changes in very short intervals if the DPF itself doesn't actually clog. For more normal use with frequent longer runs, then the impact is that you won't get to the 2 years or 21k miles LR claimed the car would go between services. However, apart from Fleets and Ebenezer Scrooge, who would want oil to stay in a car for 21,000 miles? :) If you plan on changing the oil every year, or at most 11k miles, then you should be absolutely fine. You do need to go in with your eyes open on the oil dilution, but providing you do, then it's a great car. If you are only doing short journeys and still like the look and practicality then just get the petrol version. MPG not so important then anyway, and you'll avoid all the above. If you live in the countryside and have longer journeys then the diesel makes more sense and, as long as you change oil regularly, the extra torque in more challenging conditions will be more of a benefit. Agree fully with the rest of the review. Having experience with other recent SUV's from Skoda and Peugeot, I don't understand why LR get such a bashing on infotainment. It may not be as pretty at times (subjective), but it's a lot better thought through and easier to use day to day IMO. Skoda map updates are horrid compared to the simpler LR approach of providing an app to do it for you, and the Skoda settings in general are over complicated.
Colonial here! I bought the disco sport HSE recently and it is amazing in the snow. I have cold weather problems most of the year and it performs beautifully. I also haul a full car of kids and they’re all very comfortable in the car. Even my 6’2 giant husband fits just fine with plenty of headroom and leg space.
Owned a 15 plate version for about 7 or 8 months, so the old 2.2 from the freelander and it was great. Only problems were the electric boot and sat nav , both caused trips back to the dealer , otherwise a great landy in my JLR history of cars. Would happily buy another.
We have one of these in Spain. I found a2017, 17000 km spanish hse on ebay and drove it down through Spain. Lovely smooth and comfortable ride and enjoyed every mile from Bilboa to Puerto Banus. We use it in many guises....4,5 and occasional 7 seater and it is a great family vehicle. Looks great as well. We take it skiing in Sierra Nevada and it has no problems. Agree it is heavier on diesel (mid to low 30s) but I love it and may get one over here as my next runaround.

Landrover always has the ability to produce vehicles w/soul & class ... you can always argue (with justification) that Japanese 4x4s are superior reliability wise, but Landrovers just have the 'it' factor ...
New Jack I agree. I don’t think they’re as unreliable as some people would have you think. That’s not been my experience anyway and I can’t have just been ‘lucky’.
In today's internet age ... everyone with 'bad experience(s)' regarding a particular car manufacturer/model posts on the net ... whilst helpful in terms of fixes & general information, it can also create a perception of a brand, which is hard to lose i.e. Landrover
@@rEdHoUsE_1969 YEs which is extremely dangerous. Mercedes learnt the hard way in the 00s and JLR will learn this in the coming years. Also faults and experience are relevant n price. Since JLR have elevated their prices to very Premium, people expect more. The might be why fewer Octavia owners complain less than A3 drivers, even though much of the car is the same.
Great Review. I have had mine for just on 3 years ( 2018 2.0D SE) . So happy with it. comfortable, economical and fun to drive. To date no reliability issues at all. it just goes for its regular yearly services. My dad loves it so much, that he wants to buy it from me.

A lot of the rivals such as the Volvo XC60, Audi Q5 and BMW X3 have much higher quality interiors than the LR with a lot more modern tech. I’m sure you will enjoy your discovery sport but you can get more for your money in the other 3
I have one of the first 400 units that rolled out of the factory, judging by Vin #. Bought used two years ago. Deliberately chose it as I wanted the Ford 2.2 diesel to avoid engine reliability issues. This car is crazy practical, solved all my commuting issues and weekend trips with the kids. No B pillar problem, but plenty other issues. Front half axle worn at 50k km (!!) , wheel stabilizer, gearbox safe modes, start stop failures to name a few. Car runs fine and not thinking of selling, but it's a pain sometimes. My 2012 evoque with the same engine never went to the dealer over anything, with 160k km.

Not everyone in the market is after brand new cars and even the old reviews when they were brand new aren't suitable for used buyers as they come across more sales like. Your reviews are excellent and informative. I was looking at a BMW X3 but now considering this... Switching from a 5series GT... Need something higher and shorter in length with a more practical boot. Thoughts anyone?
I have a Discovery. I used it for work as a rural Vet. Surgeon. Never let me down . I had a farmer come out in a snowstorm to collect me . Never happened after I got the Discovery. I always managed to get through.
Great review. I loved my Freelander 2 which I had from 2007 -2010. Never let me down and got me through 2 bad winters of 2009 and 2010( IIRC) taking the snow and ice in its stride. Not one of my better decisions to chop it in for an Audi TT. (I know, I know.... but as mid-life crises go it could have been worse) Always wondered whether the replacement for the Freelander 2 was any good or was it just style over substance. Now I know. Unfortunately it seems like every other driveway in my part of the world (a wannabe Alderly Edge) has a Discovery Sport on it so when I wanted to get back into a decent SUV I just couldn't do it. Pity as I think it would tick all my boxes for size, on / off road capability, space and towing capacity. I'm new to channel and I am loving the honest (sometimes brutally honest) reviews. I had the Land Rover Sport R-Dynamic HSE, it was stolen 7 months later. It took the thieves approx. 20 seconds in total - they did it in the middle of the day. Nobody warned me about "keyless relay" car thieves - no the salesperson, nor the insurance company. These cars are very easy to steal - if you have one, take extra security precautions.
My left leg is always sore after resting on the centre console when I drive my dads disco, it's so sharp and hard. Still a great car though, awesome review mate.
I fancied one of these, but just a bit expensive at the time I was looking. I had the Freelander 2, had it for just short of 10yrs, loved it. Every year I had to fix something! Door locks, It had the diff reconditioned, the turbo reconditioned, new clutch, new rear shocks, new windscreen, new disks and pads and other service items. Towed a caravan all over France and Spain. 156000 when I sold it and it was still going strong. Audi A6 allroad now and I've got to say It's another awesome car. Bigger engine, s-tronic gearbox, cheaper road tax and better economy. Always enjoy your reviews High Peaks Auto, keep them coming 👏
We’ve never had a Land Rover. We have owned BMWs and Volvo’s. Yes we have had the odd glitch with those also. Leyland and Rover always got a slating, and yes they had problems but they never let us down, always kept going.

We have had our 2017 model HSE Tdi auto for nearly two years , totally delighted for everyday motoring , also excellent for towing with Hymer 470 caravan, fuel economy is good if you mdrive sensibly. This is our third Land Rover, having previously haa a 1994 Range Rover Classic tdi auto ( 6.5 years), followed by a 2006 Freelander tdi 5 door ( 12 years ). We obviously like Land Rovers, having been told that our previous cars would be unreliable they were pretty good, the last vewhicle achieving 169,000 miles with the original factory fitted clutch including caravanning. We have an local independant Land Rover specialist taking care of the maintainance. Totally agree with all the comments made in the revue.

I struggle with people that believe only Japanese cars are reliable, 7 months into my 13 year old RR TDV8 and still loving it, don't think I'll be running it on my state pension though :-)
I loved our Landrover Discovery Sport, 2.0 HSE S14 automatic 4WD but far from being suitable for off road driving across the plains of Africa, it was mere narrow country lane on my way home that saw ours off. I went into a ditch, and as I came out, the car veered across the narrow lane and struck a tree. The air bag went off on the outside of the windscreen and the front off-side tyre exploded. Worst we found out later that the steering column had snapped and the car was written off. We plan to replace with the same model, as we loved the car, but it did surprise us that a ditch on a country lane could server the steering column.
I have owned an HSE 2017 black (family work horse, 3 kids). It’s great although mpg is lower than you’re experiencing. Around town 22-24 and motorway as high as 31/32 at best. Overall a good car. I’m a petrol head and it’s not fun but punchy enough! I too have heard horror stories on reliability but so far no problems in my 3 years of ownership! Must renew the warranty though! Nice review 👍🏾
Main issue with these is the timing chains snap and get ingested into the engine, besides that like you say its mostly brake squeaks, interior rattles and weird noises from the engine bay.
Personally, i would prefer adding a few expected repairs to the budget if it meant that i spend the 99% of time actually driving in a much nicer car. A less reliable car might be inconvenient once a year if you have to get something fixed, but sitting in a cheaply made interior would annoy me all of the time.

My point was reliability isn't a guarantee from any brand so surely you would choose the car you want based on practicality, price, styling etc and maintain it well and keep your fingers crossed, no?
I am on my 5th Land Rover and 2nd Discovery sport and they have all been reliable. in fact, more reliable than Honda, BMW, Hyundai and VW, all of which I have also had. My current Disco sport is the 2019 MEHV and it is lovely to drive.
Great review as always, the only issue I can find with the disco sport 2.0 diesel is the endless dpf issues causing oil contamination due to the dpf being so far back and not getting hot enough to regen.
@@hughmarcus1 I've had the same issue with my 18 reg 2.0 180D HSE, having oil changed every 5000 miles and if you are on a Scotish Island (5000 miles 1st instance of oil service reqd) then you are screwed as it has to be LR dealer to change oil & filter and recovery won't come out as it's not a fault....it's a service. Apart from that i love this car, reliable, fast, go anywhere, economical - long trip 55mpg, urban 35mpg. One gripe but it's with goverment, road tax jumped from £140 1st year to £450 years 2 to 6 incl. showroom tax wtf!!! On the plus side my local dealership told me there's now a software fix for DPF/diesel in oil issue...fingers crossed.
Reliability is number 1 on my list, I need a car that I know doesn't need work besides standard services and tyres, breaks etc. It does look nice and sounds as if I would enjoy one.

Another great review. I personally don't mind the slight bias. We are all guilty of that. I'm biased towards Jaguars in a positive way and BMWs in a negative way. But you are right in my opinion, looks and ride are more important for me, I'm not saying I want a car that fails daily, but I for one can live with niggles if the overall package suits me.
I agree with you. If a car ticks enough other boxes, I'm willing to take a hit on reliability as long as it's not going to be a complete nightmare, and as far as I can tell, these aren't that bad.
Great video as usual! I agree with your comments about reliability. I’ve just bought a 2013 Discovery 4 HSE Luxury. I had it checked over by the local main dealer and it needs around £1,100 worth of work including a new propshaft and coolant expansion tank. But overall it’s in very good condition with no issues with the air suspension, for example. The thing is, no older car is going to be entirely free of issues. You just have to make sure you can budget for them and of course buy the car at the right price in the first place. In my case, negative reviews of the Disco’s potential unreliability were outweighed by the car’s positive qualities, of which there are many.
I had a Freelander 2 for 3 Years and it never let me down once, it was extremely comfortable on a long journey and I felt safe in it as I had an excellent field of vision and the car felt solid and well made. Sadly I swapped it for a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV , the only benefits I get from the PHEV are the fuel savings and the comfort that I am trying to do my bit for the environment It doesn’t feel anywhere near as comfortable and safe and capable as the Freelander 2 . If the Discovery Sport is better than the Freelander 2 then I am sorry to say that the next car I buy will either be another Freelander 2 or the Discovery Sports and goodbye to the outlander PHEV
Yeah, I deliberately bought a 2.2 for that very reason. They're a little rough when cold, but once they're warmed up, they're fine. I was expecting worse MPG, but I recently did a run through Wales (lots of hills and twisty roads) and returned 39 MPG. I've had as much as 48 indicated on a motorway run, although I suspect that was the trip computer being a little optimistic.
My wife loves her 2017 sport and all the good points you say are true.Hers has done 37k miles now and has been to and fro to the dealer every few months. Rattles from the trim was a 3 day fix traced to missed fixings when it was built. DPF filter brackets snapped, Fixed with a new DPF at LR expense, Management lights always on, goes in for software update and fixed for a few weeks then comes on again. Back in next week as the front suspension is making a horrible noise from steel pivots in Aluminium link arms not being greased at service. Still covered by LR so not fussed. Will be sold when the warranty runs out in 12 months but she will buy another despite its faults as its the only car she has ever enjoyed driving just for drivings sake.
I have a certified pre-owned on the way that I purchased online. I almost bought a Land Rover 20 years ago and a friend talked me out of it! I will never let someone talk me out of my dream car ever again.

Answer to your question about reliability: YES! Reliability is the most important aspect of a car. Perhaps a Landcruiser if they weren't so expensive. Great vids, by the way, Its refreshing to hear honest reviews from someone in the trade.
Yes Matt this looks to be the ideal car I could convert to a camper-car as you state fold the rear seats down and you have massive room to stretch out and make it into an ideal bed area, plus room for cooking on them typical British weather days when outside cooking is a non starter. Hi Mat, I totally agree with you regarding the car, and it’s benefits, mine is a 2016 2 litre Diesel Ingenium engine loads of goodies Medion sound, heated steering wheel television full electric seats easy entry drivers seat and on it goes. The centre console is hard plastic and very uncomfortable in an otherwise extremely comfortable car; although it looks a little strange I used some Velcro and some soft material there…problem solved. I can achieve 50mpg plus on a long drive at 60mph. The engine management light came on (Not Blinking) but I panicked anyway,albeit the car drove perfectly! A local garage reset it after checking it of course £16, they thought it must be a computer glitch. It came back on a couple of weeks later so I reset it myself, touch wood 1000 miles later and it has not come back on (hope I don’t regret this)! The car is 7 years old 36000miles and immaculate, I change oil & filter regularly. Serviced at local garage, far cheaper than JLR, it had several items including brakes and brake disks replaced under warranty. I wanted to swap it for a 6 months old Mercedes B class premium plus £4500 to change, my wife wouldn’t hear of it, 2 hips replaced so I can’t fault her. The Land Rover Experience was incredible (defied physics) I commented. After all this, I would exchange in a heartbeat for a Mercedes GLB, alas I’m retired 73 and after working all my life…I can’t afford one. Can’t even find a dentist who will repair my favourite front tooth broken in an accident! A fall. Not a car accident.
What always bugs me is people's expectations of what's reliable. Something second hand is a lottery, one guy in our pub has bought a 15 year old range rover says Range Rovers are crap, he is now wingding about having to put new discs on the front of the car he's had 5 months!! And it's a 70grand motor. Well it's not, it's a 12 grand motor and anyone who buys a car with a 3 month warranty and doesn't see the discs were so worn, even Blind Pew could spot them
Yes exactly. That’s what annoys me too. I once had a somebody on the forecourt slagging off another car dealer because he had to replace the key fob battery and wiper blades within the first year 😂😂 🤡
My daughter's had one from new for 3 years now and done 30K+ miles. No issues and no squeaks or rattles (yes I am touching wood). I think it's a great car. I should know....I have to clean it!
I live in the U.S. and have a 2019 Disco Sport HSE and really like it. Lots of room, very comfortable and I really like the design language of Land Rovers. This was an excellent review!
Of course reliability is important, but I'm not getting behind the wheel of anything that doesn't steer, ride or handle well. I am a CAR ENTHUSIAST - I love a good looking vehicle, that drives well. It adds to my life. Hence Lexus, Toyota and the like bore the ass of me. I have a Jaguar XE, 180d bought at 3000 miles now with 42000 and I love how it drives and 100% reliable. Oh, forgot to say, great review.

I have. 2017 Discovery, no issues, no squeaks, great tow car (1.9 tonne caravan) average mpg 38, with the van 32 which does me fine, 40,000 miles still on original tyres.

Reliability is very important - more important than MPG as it can be an unknown and unpredictable cost. It is also the feeling that the car has let you down and difficult to enjoy it once you've lost your trust in it.
Being left at the side of the road is a gutting feeling, as an ex BMW owner, I know that feeling.

I've owned the exact same model for just over two years now, it's the same colour but with the black pack (roof, grill, mirrors & wheels).
I agree with all your comments. It is a fantastic, beautiful car that is excellent on or off road. I don't 'baby' it and have even carried 20 sacks (500KG) of cement in the back without the car even noticing!
I don't understand why so many people in Britain complain about it being unreliable. It could be that LR takes more care with export cars, though I think that is highly unlikely.
Maybe it's just a 'British' thing where people enjoy grumbling about something that they should actually be really, really proud of. It reminds me of my Italian friends who take me to the most amazing restaurant in Tuscany and complain all the way home about how crappy the best meal I've ever had in my life was! - Some people will ALWAYS nitpick.
The roads in my country are mostly bumpy and poor quality yet I have never heard a single squeak or rattle in two years, and have never had to take it in to the service centre except for the scheduled service.
If you want the best out of the driving experience I recommend avoiding the large wheels and getting the 18 inch ones instead. I can't understand how people opt for 20 or 21 inch wheels and then complain about the bumpy, uncomfortable ride!
And YES, it DOES deserve the 'SPORT' in it's name. Other reviewers say it doesn't, but they seem to take it too literally and compare it to a sports car. For me it means that it is more sporty than it's big brother the Discovery which sometimes feels like a Transit Van to drive.

I am on my 2nd DIsco Sport and agree entirely. They are fabulous to drive and do everything I want, including easily towing a 1.3 ton tin box. The amount of grip when hustling along twisty country lanes is truly surprising. I have generally found Land Rover to be actually more reliable than the VWs, Hyundai, BMW and Hondas that I have had in the past.
Could you please offer specific examples as to how the LR has been more reliable than a VW or BMW?

Great review! I'm with you on the reliability. I have had a 2016 Discovery sport for 6 months now and have to say it's one of the best cars as a whole package I've experienced. For me the most important qualities in a car are handling, powertrain, economy, styling, practicality, value etc. Roughly in that order 🤷.
Reliability is important yes, but the best way to ensure that is by proper maintenance and use.

@@alterego6255 I traded the car in for a 2015 Mercedes C-class in march. It had an electrical glitch, where the Abs, transmission and power steering had a fault code and the car went into limp mode from time to time. Apparently it was a software problem, but the service department wasnt sure. But that wasnt the reason why I wanted to change the car 😂

Having a car for 6 months can not pass on “reliability” over a period longer than 2 years will give proper reliability test. In which will fail 😂
My LR Defender is 24yrs old. I had a cake made for it's 21st birthday. I shall do the same again next year for its 25th birthday.
Good video... reliability, for me being a serial Land Rover owner and fan has always been to who has owned it before you and was it abused or looked after. Simple as that... abused = trouble for every make and model.

Not right at all. Generally japanese cars can take a lot more abuse. The quality control is much higher. Theres a reason why Toyota has been ranking at the top ever since the 80's.

Sine Metu when did I say this? Every car needs basic servicing. Oil change, filter etc but a Honda for example you can put your foot down and abuse it a lot more because the engines are over engineered. Same goes for Toyota and many other Japanese brands. Japanese electrics are also the most reliable. Also look at the Japanese electronics industry in the 80s and 90s. They dominated the world thanks to the reliability of their components like capacitors.
I was going to mention this on the Evoque video. A close friend has an evoke from new, serviced by dealer within schedule, yet back at least every 2 months. She lives in a village in the middle of the Wolds and works as a surveyor. She's been left stranded 4 times in 2 years. An old boss had a Disco and that was always back at the dealer. Out of all the people I know who have a JLR product from new under 5 years old, I would say 4 out of 5 have had reliability and build issues from the word go. I would love a Land Rover, but might hold on to my Mitsubishi as back up just in case.
Just bought the same model and year and watching this has reinforced my belief that I made the right choice.
I bought this as a demo with 19500km almost a year ago and am really impressed, although miss the fun aspect of my previous Freelander 2SE. It has been fully reliable and delivered outstanding diesel economy, better than the Freelander to my surprise. The 9 speed gear box is a delight - have not encountered any hunting across gears in town mentioned in your review. The one sadness is I find the front seats uncomfortable, both too low and too wide - so I use two cushions to improve the position and feel - that's probably indicating I have weird anatomy, as others don't feel the same. The Freelander 2 had a wonderful seat and seating position... I also appreciate that the passenger seat has the same controls as the driver seat by the way.
I really have had NO reliability issues with Land Rover since I bought the Freelander 2 SE in 2010.
I thoroughly endorse the review in terms of the quality and capability of the vehicle, and love the styling. The ability to shift the whole back seat bench forward also creates an incredible boot space without cramping the passengers behind - and yes, the 2 small seats at the very back are not full adult size, but very handy for family.
I’ve had the 2016 version of this car for almost two years. Prior to buying I test drove an F-Pace and the full size Discovery. F-Pace drove like it was on silk, but I found the cockpit style interior too claustrophobic. The full size Discovery had gone past the sweet spot and due to the added height wallowed somewhat in bends.
I have been absolutely delighted with the Disco sport. I did note some wind noise from the mirrors after a couple of days, but realised that this was mainly due to everything else being so quiet. Mine has the beige interior trim, which accentuates the interior space and luxury feel.
Yes, it is thirsty in town, but otherwise pretty good (I live in a rural area) - on French motorways for example, (little traffic, no cones, no average speed checks where road maintenance is NOT being done), 43mpg+ is easily achievable. There have been no reliability issues.
In short, this review accurately reflects my experience with this stylish and high quality car.

So now into my third year of ownership and still love the car. The weather here in Scotland has been horrendous over the last couple of weeks with heavy snow and freezing temperatures. The Discovery has taken it all in its stride. It feels so confident and steady on snow covered roads .
Good to have a reviewer that is positive about JLR products. All brands have problems one way or another, even Toyota.

How can you question on would a cars reliability influence your decision?? I think about 90% of people do think thats top of the list on when choosing a car ?? Set up a poll on choices on buying a used car = looks = reliability = practicality = feel = comfort etc 👍see what happens

Any petrol head will put looks, sound, functionality and brand over reliability when buying a car. I've had loads of land rovers in the past and I don't buy them cos they'll never break down, I buy them cos they are so blooming spot on. They are such capable vehicles and are the tool to have if you're out in the harsh weather. Green oval all the way!
Of course potentials buyers would, if asked say that they want it to be reliable, you'd be a fool not to, but that doesn't mean it will be FOR ANY MAKE OF VEHICLE. Otherwise we'd all be driving round in Toyota Corolla but even so it doesn't garantie that YOUR Corolla will be.
James Shephard you don’t need a Land Rover just because the weather is harsh. Maybe if you’re a farmer but not really for everyone else.
I have a sport and what I like is that it’s not expensive to fix like most Land Rovers. Yesterday I went for a tuneup and it’s only 4 spark plugs and they sit right on top of motor, not on the side hiding behind other equipment that takes hours to move. It only took 30 minutes labor.
Hired one of these for a drive round iceland. I was quite impressed. Really comfy and perfectly capable. I noticed it had 170k kilometres on the clock but it really didnt feel like it at all. Id take this over the evoque any day.
By the way, i didnt get anything like 40 to the gallon. 30 maybe....
This is the 3rd time I've watched this video now. 3 weeks ago I went and got a D180 HSE, MY 17. Well, you haven't let me down. I love it. I took my test in a LR Lightwieght in the 80s, had a County 90 in the 90s, had a Freelander 1 for the last 9 years. No squeaks or rattles at all, the infotainment has been fine. The auto stop/start is very temperamental, but it's a Land Rover, it's part of it's character. I'm wondering if it's a patriotic thing going on. My go to car has always been Land Rover and my go to motorbike has always been Triumph, currently riding a 20 year old Daytona 955i, thinking it's time to upgrade that to newer tech now. Great reviews by the way. Keep up the good work.

It depends what you mean by reliability? If we're talking disappointment about rattles well that's one thing; however if we are talking about leaving you stranded at the side of the road well any car, new or 2nd hand can do that. Plus perceptions based on others perceptions and urban myths are not reliable. I've had lots of Discoverys and NONE on them has EVER let me down. Yes I might have needed to replace a window motor, battery, or other incidentals, but I've always got home with my family intact.

Very good evaluation. Reliability, Performance and Safety is always on top. Cant compromise with Fuel consumption. Still the SUV gives a good fuel economy level. Not too low. And the main important factor is the BEST PRICE tag for this quality ,RELIABILITY, and Safety.Very good. Keep it up
We bought a Sorento the same time as our neighbour (who is a friend) bought a Disco Sport. He’s had major problems with it, with the transmission packing it in twice. His wife has been stranded on the motorway three times due to electrical gremlins. Even when he got it delivered he had to return it due to poor paint quality on two rear panels.
Like you, I’m not against the odd glitch or rattle. But his experience has definitely put me off.
The Sorento has been trouble free.
A few years ago i bought a Disco, the electrics were a joke, i thought maybe it was a Friday afternoon job, but friends who had Disco's and RR's had the same issues, I love the brand but they do seem to go a bit bandy even when new!

Well, I have a 2016 HSE Black with lots of extras. Only 12,500 miles.
I recently changed from a Freelander 2 HSE which I loved. Got a Discovery sport SE and the interior build quality has been a big let down. Not many rattles but very annoying and LR dealer failed to fix any of them. I don’t think it’s a comfortable either (especially the seats) as the old Freelander. Dynamically it is a much better car, but also lacks the character of the old Freelander. I have driven it off road and it is good fun and very capable.
When the time comes to replace my freelancer 1.....I want a free lander 2😆 my old girl just keeps on going (touching wood as I type) would like the new discovery 2015 but think we'll over my budget. FL2 HSE 2014 would be nice.

I have had 2 Discovery sports, both HSE models. The first one was a manual gearbox and I hated it. My BMW 5 Series was auto and i reluctantly changed because my wife had 2 hip replacements. Initially I bought an X3 and hated it, standard suspension but so uncomfortable after 50 miles or so. I loved the Mercedes GLC and I was so disappointed when after the test drive, my wife found it so difficult to get out of the car without brushing her legs on the door sill. The GLC is so much better in every category save the door sill and of course the off road capabilities. The Land Rover experience proved that. I too find the Discovery centre console runs your knee and it is a nuisance. I don't agree with Mat with regards to the fuel consumption though, my X3 and the GLC are both much better. In conclusion though I have to admit that apart from the centre console, the Disco really is a very comfortable car especially on long journey. My present Discovery has so many extras including the digital TV, easy access Meridian sound memory seats it goes on. But oh, the new Mercedes B class, retired and skint so dream on David. Did I mention this review? Well it was excellent, well done.
Just bought a 2018 hse petrol, use a lot round town wanted to avoid dpf issues, omg what a car, did a 90 mile trip round east coast villages using hill decent, lots of overtaking with the 240 hp. Averaged 32mpg I really cant complain, shes a keeper.
Had various Land Rovers for nearly 30 years, Freelander, RR Sports, and a Disco Sport and can honestly say they have all been reliable. Only time I got stuck was when I had a puncture on the wall of a tyre and the chemical injection repair wouldn't work so had to call the RAC. Never broke down due to vehicle mechanical or electrical issues. I still drive Land Rovers as does my wife and daughter and have no reason to change.
I agree. I've had dozens. I could list lots of issues I've had with other brands but never had anything too bad happen to my LR's.

But I'm terrorized by the reliability stereotypes of LR. I don't care for occasional minor squeaks or rattles as long as the power train, mechanical and electrical systems are reliable and durable. I am also considering the Kodiaq only because the 2.0 tdi is reliable. I would only opt for the manual box. Please, let me know if I can rest assured the Disco Sport is as reliable as a Kodiaq!

I love mine. It copes well with the extreme weather and poor roads here in Scotland. Off road, it’s excellent. I agree with all of your other plus points. I have a few negatives that prospective owners perhaps should note... Whilst fuel consumption isn’t bad at all, the tank is quite small for car that’s otherwise so good at long distances. You do need to keep a container of adblue at home at it won’t start if you run dry. Door handles are a bit dodgy (sometimes not closing properly) and the caps can fall off when jet washing. The covers on the tailgate gas struts keep falling off too. I miss the DSG box and adaptive cruise of my previous car (Audi), but have got used to driving the Disco Sport, especially sport mode when needed. Go for the HSE spec if you can - if nothing else because of the xenon headlights; the halogen lights on other models are piss poor. Best car I’ve ever owned? Probably.
Tim King You need to get LR to fix the adblue issue if the car fails to start. Mine tells me that the adblue is getting low and I then have @ 1000 miles (according to LR) to top it up again before the ems cuts the engine off.

As of late 2019, the facelifted
2020 MY Disco Sport had the fuel tank size increased from 54 to 65 litres.
Along with the mild hybrid tech which improved fuel economy, range per tank of fuel is much better.
Once u get to 1,500 kms left on Ad Blue, u get regular warnings of remaining range on Ad Blue, so get it topped up before it runs out.
Ad Blue tank also increased in size on 2020 MY Disco Sport, so more driving range before Ad Blue tank needs to be refilled.
Disco Sport is a great all round car.

Usually a Sport saloon person, but this is Best all round car I've ever had, 3 years, no problems whatsoever. Even done a fair bit of off-roading here in Oz, up to its axles in mud/sand with low profile tyres but still never got stuck. On gravel corrugated roads at 100 plus Kmh it is smooth and still quiet, no rattles, squeaks, servicing free for 6 years, superb stereo (better than my top of range C63s Burmester system). Most impressive though was returning from a two week holiday to find our underground car stacker had flooded, it had sat for at least a week in around three quarters of a meters of water, covering wheels, exhausts and door seals. Upon lifting it out of the stacker I feared the worst to say the least, not a single drop had got inside, started first a time with no warning lights, what seemed like litres of water came out the exhausts system as my wife pulled away and that was it, no worries at all, very impressed. Had more problems with VW's, Ford vans and Merc's than this.

Hello Matt, thank you for the endless hours of calming entertainment you have provided. I worked in automotive development for many years, and the reason for the mountainbike-esque increase in gear ratios was both to combat stringent emissions legislation (which is also why most cars ditched the full sized spare so they could drop an inertia class) but was also to effectively combine the old low and high range boxes on cars like these. In theory they should pull away in second or third if they are at temp / not towing etc. In practise they can hunt alot, something that's often cured by driving around in sport mode. In any case, anything is better than a CVT isn't it?!
Bought mine second hand, and had it for 2 years now with no major faults so far. It's a great family car, extremely practical, and the kids love it.
The one major flaw these cars have in diesel form is the exhaust architecture. It doesn't really work, and as a result causes oil dilution. What does this mean? If you do mainly short journeys then avoid the D150 and D180. They will not regenerate the DPF very well, and you will need oil changes in very short intervals if the DPF itself doesn't actually clog. For more normal use with frequent longer runs, then the impact is that you won't get to the 2 years or 21k miles LR claimed the car would go between services. However, apart from Fleets and Ebenezer Scrooge, who would want oil to stay in a car for 21,000 miles? :) If you plan on changing the oil every year, or at most 11k miles, then you should be absolutely fine.
You do need to go in with your eyes open on the oil dilution, but providing you do, then it's a great car. If you are only doing short journeys and still like the look and practicality then just get the petrol version. MPG not so important then anyway, and you'll avoid all the above. If you live in the countryside and have longer journeys then the diesel makes more sense and, as long as you change oil regularly, the extra torque in more challenging conditions will be more of a benefit.
Agree fully with the rest of the review. Having experience with other recent SUV's from Skoda and Peugeot, I don't understand why LR get such a bashing on infotainment. It may not be as pretty at times (subjective), but it's a lot better thought through and easier to use day to day IMO. Skoda map updates are horrid compared to the simpler LR approach of providing an app to do it for you, and the Skoda settings in general are over complicated.
If you buy one without a warranty, check for water ingress around the windscreen and make sure the fan blower is working quietly
Colonial here! I bought the disco sport HSE recently and it is amazing in the snow. I have cold weather problems most of the year and it performs beautifully. I also haul a full car of kids and they’re all very comfortable in the car. Even my 6’2 giant husband fits just fine with plenty of headroom and leg space.

Owned a 15 plate version for about 7 or 8 months, so the old 2.2 from the freelander and it was great. Only problems were the electric boot and sat nav , both caused trips back to the dealer , otherwise a great landy in my JLR history of cars. Would happily buy another.

We have one of these in Spain. I found a2017, 17000 km spanish hse on ebay and drove it down through Spain.
Lovely smooth and comfortable ride and enjoyed every mile from Bilboa to Puerto Banus.
We use it in many guises....4,5 and occasional 7 seater and it is a great family vehicle. Looks great as well.
We take it skiing in Sierra Nevada and it has no problems.
Agree it is heavier on diesel (mid to low 30s) but I love it and may get one over here as my next runaround.
Perfect for over there. Not too big for the small spanish villages but also looks the part wherever it goes

Seriously though ... despite all the companies up & many downs ... Landrover always has the ability to produce vehicles w/soul & class ... you can always argue (with justification) that Japanese 4x4s are superior reliability wise, but Landrovers just have the 'it' factor ...
New Jack I agree. I don’t think they’re as unreliable as some people would have you think. That’s not been my experience anyway and I can’t have just been ‘lucky’.
In today's internet age ... everyone with 'bad experience(s)' regarding a particular car manufacturer/model posts on the net ... whilst helpful in terms of fixes & general information, it can also create a perception of a brand, which is hard to lose i.e. Landrover
@@rEdHoUsE_1969 YEs which is extremely dangerous. Mercedes learnt the hard way in the 00s and JLR will learn this in the coming years. Also faults and experience are relevant n price. Since JLR have elevated their prices to very Premium, people expect more. The might be why fewer Octavia owners complain less than A3 drivers, even though much of the car is the same.
Great Review. I have had mine for just on 3 years ( 2018 2.0D SE) . So happy with it. comfortable, economical and fun to drive. To date no reliability issues at all. it just goes for its regular yearly services. My dad loves it so much, that he wants to buy it from me.

A lot of the rivals such as the Volvo XC60, Audi Q5 and BMW X3 have much higher quality interiors than the LR with a lot more modern tech. I’m sure you will enjoy your discovery sport but you can get more for your money in the other 3
I have one of the first 400 units that rolled out of the factory, judging by Vin #. Bought used two years ago. Deliberately chose it as I wanted the Ford 2.2 diesel to avoid engine reliability issues.
This car is crazy practical, solved all my commuting issues and weekend trips with the kids.
No B pillar problem, but plenty other issues. Front half axle worn at 50k km (!!) , wheel stabilizer, gearbox safe modes, start stop failures to name a few.
Car runs fine and not thinking of selling, but it's a pain sometimes.
My 2012 evoque with the same engine never went to the dealer over anything, with 160k km.

These are good, practical and easy to park. The petrol 4 cyl ingenium turbo is thirsty around town. The diesel is smooth. A great buy.

I have a Discovery. I used it for work as a rural Vet. Surgeon. Never let me down . I had a farmer come out in a snowstorm to collect me . Never happened after I got the Discovery. I always managed to get through.
Great review. I loved my Freelander 2 which I had from 2007 -2010. Never let me down and got me through 2 bad winters of 2009 and 2010( IIRC) taking the snow and ice in its stride. Not one of my better decisions to chop it in for an Audi TT. (I know, I know.... but as mid-life crises go it could have been worse)
Always wondered whether the replacement for the Freelander 2 was any good or was it just style over substance. Now I know.
Unfortunately it seems like every other driveway in my part of the world (a wannabe Alderly Edge) has a Discovery Sport on it so when I wanted to get back into a decent SUV I just couldn't do it. Pity as I think it would tick all my boxes for size, on / off road capability, space and towing capacity.

I had the Land Rover Sport R-Dynamic HSE, it was stolen 7 months later. It took the thieves approx. 20 seconds in total - they did it in the middle of the day. Nobody warned me about "keyless relay" car thieves - no the salesperson, nor the insurance company. These cars are very easy to steal - if you have one, take extra security precautions.
My left leg is always sore after resting on the centre console when I drive my dads disco, it's so sharp and hard. Still a great car though, awesome review mate.

I fancied one of these, but just a bit expensive at the time I was looking. I had the Freelander 2, had it for just short of 10yrs, loved it. Every year I had to fix something! Door locks, It had the diff reconditioned, the turbo reconditioned, new clutch, new rear shocks, new windscreen, new disks and pads and other service items. Towed a caravan all over France and Spain. 156000 when I sold it and it was still going strong. Audi A6 allroad now and I've got to say It's another awesome car. Bigger engine, s-tronic gearbox, cheaper road tax and better economy. Always enjoy your reviews High Peaks Auto, keep them coming 👏
We’ve never had a Land Rover. We have owned BMWs and Volvo’s. Yes we have had the odd glitch with those also. Leyland and Rover always got a slating, and yes they had problems but they never let us down, always kept going.

We have had our 2017 model HSE Tdi auto for nearly two years , totally delighted for everyday motoring , also excellent for towing with Hymer 470 caravan, fuel economy is good if you mdrive sensibly. This is our third Land Rover, having previously haa a 1994 Range Rover Classic tdi auto ( 6.5 years), followed by a 2006 Freelander tdi 5 door ( 12 years ). We obviously like Land Rovers, having been told that our previous cars would be unreliable they were pretty good, the last vewhicle achieving 169,000 miles with the original factory fitted clutch including caravanning. We have an local independant Land Rover specialist taking care of the maintainance. Totally agree with all the comments made in the revue.
Thank you for doing this review Matt, highly likely a discovery sport will follow my current range rover vogue as I do like a holiday in a tin box (they are composite now btw). I struggle with people that believe only Japanese cars are reliable, 7 months into my 13 year old RR TDV8 and still loving it, don't think I'll be running it on my state pension though :-)

I loved our Landrover Discovery Sport, 2.0 HSE S14 automatic 4WD but far from being suitable for off road driving across the plains of Africa, it was mere narrow country lane on my way home that saw ours off. I went into a ditch, and as I came out, the car veered across the narrow lane and struck a tree. The air bag went off on the outside of the windscreen and the front off-side tyre exploded. Worst we found out later that the steering column had snapped and the car was written off. We plan to replace with the same model, as we loved the car, but it did surprise us that a ditch on a country lane could server the steering column.
Land Rover make you feel like you cant live with out one because once you have had one you cant. haha

I have owned an HSE 2017 black (family work horse, 3 kids). It’s great although mpg is lower than you’re experiencing. Around town 22-24 and motorway as high as 31/32 at best.
Overall a good car. I’m a petrol head and it’s not fun but punchy enough! I too have heard horror stories on reliability but so far no problems in my 3 years of ownership! Must renew the warranty though! Nice review 👍🏾

Main issue with these is the timing chains snap and get ingested into the engine, besides that like you say its mostly brake squeaks, interior rattles and weird noises from the engine bay.
Reliability is a top priority. Amazes me how it can even be overlooked tbh, especially when paying £20k+ in this instance

i would prefer adding a few expected repairs to the budget if it meant that i spend the 99% of time actually driving in a much nicer car.
A less reliable car might be inconvenient once a year if you have to get something fixed, but sitting in a cheaply made interior would annoy me all of the time.

I am on my 5th Land Rover and 2nd Discovery sport and they have all been reliable. in fact, more reliable than Honda, BMW, Hyundai and VW, all of which I have also had. My current Disco sport is the 2019 MEHV and it is lovely to drive.

We had a FL1 followed by a FL2 as our family car spanning 20+ years. No reliability issues, just great family cars.
Great review as always, the only issue I can find with the disco sport 2.0 diesel is the endless dpf issues causing oil contamination due to the dpf being so far back and not getting hot enough to regen.

@@hughmarcus1 I've had the same issue with my 18 reg 2.0 180D HSE, having oil changed every 5000 miles and if you are on a Scotish Island (5000 miles 1st instance of oil service reqd) then you are screwed as it has to be LR dealer to change oil & filter and recovery won't come out as it's not a fault....it's a service. Apart from that i love this car, reliable, fast, go anywhere, economical - long trip 55mpg, urban 35mpg. One gripe but it's with goverment, road tax jumped from £140 1st year to £450 years 2 to 6 incl. showroom tax wtf!!! On the plus side my local dealership told me there's now a software fix for DPF/diesel in oil issue...fingers crossed.

Reliability is number 1 on my list, I need a car that I know doesn't need work besides standard services and tyres, breaks etc.

Another great review. I personally don't mind the slight bias. We are all guilty of that. I'm biased towards Jaguars in a positive way and BMWs in a negative way. But you are right in my opinion, looks and ride are more important for me, I'm not saying I want a car that fails daily, but I for one can live with niggles if the overall package suits me.

I agree with you. If a car ticks enough other boxes, I'm willing to take a hit on reliability as long as it's not going to be a complete nightmare, and as far as I can tell, these aren't that bad.
Great video as usual! I agree with your comments about reliability. I’ve just bought a 2013 Discovery 4 HSE Luxury. I had it checked over by the local main dealer and it needs around £1,100 worth of work including a new propshaft and coolant expansion tank. But overall it’s in very good condition with no issues with the air suspension, for example. The thing is, no older car is going to be entirely free of issues. You just have to make sure you can budget for them and of course buy the car at the right price in the first place. In my case, negative reviews of the Disco’s potential unreliability were outweighed by the car’s positive qualities, of which there are many.
I had a Freelander 2 for 3 Years and it never let me down once, it was extremely comfortable on a long journey and I felt safe in it as I had an excellent field of vision and the car felt solid and well made. Sadly I swapped it for a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV , the only benefits I get from the PHEV are the fuel savings and the comfort that I am trying to do my bit for the environment It doesn’t feel anywhere near as comfortable and safe and capable as the Freelander 2 . If the Discovery Sport is better than the Freelander 2 then I am sorry to say that the next car I buy will either be another Freelander 2 or the Discovery Sports and goodbye to the outlander PHEV

The 2.2 diesel engine might be a touch agricultural but its reliable and doesn't suffer from the oil dilution problem of the Ingenium engine
Yeah, I deliberately bought a 2.2 for that very reason. They're a little rough when cold, but once they're warmed up, they're fine. I was expecting worse MPG, but I recently did a run through Wales (lots of hills and twisty roads) and returned 39 MPG. I've had as much as 48 indicated on a motorway run, although I suspect that was the trip computer being a little optimistic.
My wife loves her 2017 sport and all the good points you say are true.Hers has done 37k miles now and has been to and fro to the dealer every few months. Rattles from the trim was a 3 day fix traced to missed fixings when it was built. DPF filter brackets snapped, Fixed with a new DPF at LR expense, Management lights always on, goes in for software update and fixed for a few weeks then comes on again. Back in next week as the front suspension is making a horrible noise from steel pivots in Aluminium link arms not being greased at service. Still covered by LR so not fussed. Will be sold when the warranty runs out in 12 months but she will buy another despite its faults as its the only car she has ever enjoyed driving just for drivings sake.

Answer to your question about reliability: YES! Reliability is the most important aspect of a car. Perhaps a Landcruiser if they weren't so expensive. Great vids, by the way, Its refreshing to hear honest reviews from someone in the trade.

Yes Matt this looks to be the ideal car I could convert to a camper-car as you state fold the rear seats down and you have massive room to stretch out and make it into an ideal bed area, plus room for cooking on them typical British weather days when outside cooking is a non starter. I totally agree with you regarding the car, and it’s benefits, mine is a 2016 2 litre Diesel Ingenium engine loads of goodies Medion sound, heated steering wheel television full electric seats easy entry drivers seat and on it goes. The centre console is hard plastic and very uncomfortable in an otherwise extremely comfortable car; although it looks a little strange I used some Velcro and some soft material there…problem solved. I can achieve 50mpg plus on a long drive at 60mph. The engine management light came on (Not Blinking) but I panicked anyway,albeit the car drove perfectly!
A local garage reset it after checking it of course £16, they thought it must be a computer glitch. It came back on a couple of weeks later so I reset it myself, touch wood 1000 miles later and it has not come back on (hope I don’t regret this)!
The car is 7 years old 36000miles and immaculate, I change oil & filter regularly. Serviced at local garage, far cheaper than JLR, it had several items including brakes and brake disks replaced under warranty. I wanted to swap it for a 6 months old Mercedes B class premium plus £4500 to change, my wife wouldn’t hear of it, 2 hips replaced so I can’t fault her. The Land Rover Experience was incredible (defied physics) I commented. After all this, I would exchange in a heartbeat for a Mercedes GLB, alas I’m retired 73 and after working all my life…I can’t afford one. Can’t even find a dentist who will repair my favourite front tooth broken in an accident! A fall. Not a car accident.
What always bugs me is people's expectations of what's reliable. Something second hand is a lottery, one guy in our pub has bought a 15 year old range rover says Range Rovers are crap, he is now wingding about having to put new discs on the front of the car he's had 5 months!! Yes exactly. That’s what annoys me too. I once had a somebody on the forecourt slagging off another car dealer because he had to replace the key fob battery and wiper blades within the first year 😂😂 🤡
My daughter's had one from new for 3 years now and done 30K+ miles. No issues and no squeaks or rattles (yes I am touching wood). I think it's a great car. I should know....I have to clean it!

Of course reliability is important, but I'm not getting behind the wheel of anything that doesn't steer, ride or handle well. I am a CAR ENTHUSIAST - I love a good looking vehicle, that drives well. It adds to my life. Hence Lexus, Toyota and the like bore the ass of me. I have a Jaguar XE, 180d bought at 3000 miles now with 42000 and I love how it drives and 100% reliable. Oh, forgot to say, great review.
A very good review, thank you. I agree with you on the centre console getting in the way of one’s left knee......having owned an Evoque. Now, after four years my Skoda Kodiaq has not given any squeaks or rattles!
