In 2010 we hired a Discovery for a weeks holiday in Scotland. I thought I was going to get a Disco 3 so imagine my surprise when after jumping through endless hoops, Thrifty finally wheeled out a brand new D4 HSE in gun metal grey. I had the time of my life driving that car, such power, such luxury, such practicality - parked in the grounds of the rented farmhouse overlooking Loch Ness I felt like a millionaire. I took it to the Isle of Mull where it was surrounded by highland cattle, took it off road, took it everywhere. When it was time to hand it back they had to taser me and prize my hands off the steering wheel. I have sometimes been in a position to buy one but cant afford to run and maintain one. Still, thanks for bringing back great memories!
@@HighPeakAutos I reckon a few weeks and you'll have a quarter of a million, that's sounds amazing. then sky's the limit. Nice things happen to nice guys mate.

Like the other commenter above I was like WTF too, although last few years the rear brake light just an advisory, but hey it had no advisories 😂 yeah mots are only valid for that day, yadda yadda yadda, but that's alot of " freak sudden failures"
Love the look of these. JLR dropped a right bollock with the one that replaced it. That weird rear number plate and that it looks "over bodied" and under wheeled. Congrats on the 200k well deserved, no nonsense, informative and entertaining. Get you 👍
I was told the weird number plate was a nod to the earlier discoveries. It only makes sense when you don't have a spare wheel on the back of a 1 or 2 and then you see where they were coming from. But you hardly ever see one without the spare wheel on the back.
The true replacement for the disco 4 is the new defender. A new 130 with a stepped roof would look like a modern disco 2. Front of the defender still looks a bit bland - just wait for the face-lift 👌🏿. I end, and give ALL the glory to the Lord Jesus Christ Who is God and His Holy Ghost.
With that air suspension only Norma height available i had the exact same issue. drives fine for 2 mins then that pops up and continues to work but at only one height. It was the air dryer on the compressor it blocks up and caused the compressor to overheat and switch off. Just if you haven’t found out the issue yet that just what I found to be the issue.
This is the best version of the Discovery 4! - What a fantastic vehicle. I was about to ring you and say …. ‘If your mate changes his mind because the dog has emigrated, please sell it to me’ …. Then the reality ‘cheque’. I had this exact model as a courtesy car once and really didn’t want to give it back. Another great video, well done.
Every time i take my d4 in its cost me £1500. Its booked in next month for another visit for its service and mot , oh its developed a gudder under braking. Wish me luck 😂
Ouch Matt !!!😱 When you first showed us this Disco it didn't look at all bad but just shows you what the costs can be on a complicated beast like this! You prepare your cars to a high standard and given it was going to a mate you didn't want to leave anything to chance - just hope his dog appreciates the fully working air suspension😊 Congratulations on the 200k subscribers.

Hats down for the fact that you spent as much as you got for it. Add to that the whole headache of driving it around mechanics to get it sorted out. I find it super smart, because yes you don't get money for it but you win happy customers. Way to build a reputation!
Well good to see our Matty gets caught out at times thank god !!!! Nothing personal just like it when things are as they should be win some lose some comes to mind ?????????????????????????Although even that comes into question does it not ??

I got the same SUV ,is very good car if you take care of them, don't forget still a luxury high end vehicle also off road is the best ,parts and maintenance is expense but i love LR4 ! Congratulations
As you stated, you've provided your friend with a car that should be fault free for 3 or 4 years. Not just that, but one of the best all-round cars on the market. Having had a D3 and two D4s from new, when I was looking for a second car to go with the RRS, I looked for a late model D4 - the ones with the solid rather than dotted day running lights. They have the updated in-car-entertainment and the 8-speed ZF auto box. A 15 plate example cost me £18.5k because it had done 123k miles, but it had a full service history and had already had the cam belt changed and a recent round of suspension arm replacements. It's been over 12 months now, and it's had a service and full check and there are no problems. Definitely the best outright purchase I've ever made, even knowing that it's going to need discs and pads, and even more suspension components in the near future. Just one thing I have to disagree with you on and that's the air suspension. Relatively speaking it's not that expensive to repair, and it is infinitely better than coil springs for ride, roll-mitigation and keeping the ride height correct when you are fully loaded. Don't forget it's got 7 full adult sized seats and with the back 5 folded has a six foot long completely flat load space with a huge square tailgate aperture to access it. Another great video
I changed my compressor for £198 on my driveway (real Hitachi). I replaced my EPB (handbrake) myself for £150. You have to know where to look :) Most of the parts you listed are normal wearable items. Oh, check the propshaft bearing for wear. They can go too. Just got mine done (£40).
That V6 is the Achilles heel of those things, absolute ticking time bomb. A Range Rover Sport TDV8 is likely a better option and far less money (unless you really need the 7 seats).
First off, congrats on the 200,000 subscribers and I have owned 2 Disco 4s in the past and they have been some of the best cars I have owned. Very good vehicles indeed!
Great video, Matt. I’m totally with you on the Disco 4. I’ve just had one through the workshop for Chop To The Top with pretty much the exact same issues as yours. After a bit of head scratching everything is all sorted and she is an absolute beauty once more, ready to give years more service to the new owner. Cheers! 👍
At the start of this video I wanted one by the end I knew I could never justify the running and repair costs. Thanks for the video and congrats on 200,000.
i spent 3,565 pounds on my disco 4 that my dad sold to me. i spent that 2 years ago and there hasn't been a single problem with it since. i think they fitted the electronic handbrake and air suspension and things like that to make the car more refined which i think it does. the amount that i spent fixing it was scary, at the time because i was only 20 years old. but i think its different to the range rover because once you get the big bills out of the way it works like a dream for a long time. and i can't get over how smooth that torquey SDV6 is. brilliant video matt.
Those bills gave me PTSD from my LR3, ended up selling it in the end after a single wheel bearing cost me $900 and didnt fix the noise it developed. Bought a 2021 F150 and havent looked back. On the plus side, found your channel and its cool to see you gained a ton of well earned subs.
I've been waiting for you to do this video for so long! To be fair, you got that at a bargain and given the work you have invested into it, your friend has also got it at a bargain given how much they have increased in price since Covid. Thank you so much Matt!
It makes you wonder how it passed an MOT with so much work needed. Regarding putting your key in the post for a refurb, maybe keeping you car away from your home address might be in order?
Blimey ! So much for a “long MOT with no advisories”. That said, I’m really impressed that you ain’t afraid to make a video like this, and share your disappointments. Better luck with the next one Matt !
I love the full fat Disco... 4 and 5... And did, for a few weeks, consider getting a nice pre-owned one instead of a new order Discovery Sport... But, air suspension was the one thing I didn't want to risk going wrong in the future. I know there is still plenty that can go wrong, but that is a biggy and I wanted to avoid it... It is a lovely example now you are done with it, great job Matt! 😃👍
Love the Discovery 4, fantastic vehicles! People need to remember, they are big, heavy cars and will eat tyres and suspension components. That one is 12 years old now so realistically, was due some new bits like the drop links etc. Now they are done, it’s not something to worry about for a few years at least.
200k subs….many many congratulations. I remember seeing one of your first videos , a white XKR . As always Matt the content, production and delivery are A1.
You're absolutely right they are just too complicated. My mate who has a small garage has literally paid his mortgage off by looking after the local farmers Disco's 3 & 4. I'm currently debating buying one myself to tow my horses about, perhaps I should stick with my Renault Master that has done over 220k and cost very little.
That you care to put these cars right must be worth thousands to your business, in customer confidence. I know that you are the only only second hand car dealer I would buy from and I live in Hertfordshire, luckily as I am old and better off these days Inonly buy new from a main dealer. Keep up the good work
Check out the window area on the D4 then look at modern cars with their shallow windows and closed in interiors....Yep, it's called progress folks. Lets go back to almost upright windscreens with huge glass areas and thinner A pillars so much safer.
Congratulations on the big 200! I was watching your videos earlier and in one of them you were thanking everyone for helping you reach 6000 subscribers 😁 Hard work certainly pays off. Thanks for all 😊 Excellent video too!
Love the Discovery 3 and 4 especially in white. But you quickly confirmed the reason I'm afraid to buy one, cost to maintain. Now that I'm older and can't do the work myself I can't cheat the system by doing my own repairs. I always tell people now, "Nothing worse than having to pay someone for work you know how to do yourself." Still they are good looking vehicles. They can't be all that bad if Mike Brewer (Wheeler Dealers) seems to drive one on his show. ;-)
Thank you for the help!! Every time I’m considering a car, I know I can just pop on your channel 😊 As you know, I’m desperately want to sell my RX400h, so I’m looking at options So far I have Discovery 4, Discovery Sport, freelander 2012,Q5 or XC60… I’ll do some more research on your videos 😅 Thanks for all the help!! Keep up with the great work 🎉
That guy who put the long MOT on it originally - wondering if he had a Labrador and a white stick….yes, certainly was a long list! Looked great in the end, bet your mate was chuffed. I prefer the Disco 4 to the 5. I use them both. The Disco 5 is very much more Range Rover than the previous ones, very quick too in the 300bhp model we use - but the rounded corners and softer lines of the 5 make it awkward to use the available load space.
I’ve been watching your videos for a year n half. You’ve made such amazing content and gave everyone advise on cars. Can’t thank you enough. Keep up the work buddy! 😁
Agree on servicing gearboxes. Automatics need fluid change whatever manufacturers say. I have even noticed the difference when swapping fluid in a manual when I have done driveshafts or similar
Brilliant car the LR4, I think you got off quite lightly with that bill considering the high miles, and as you said, it should give your mate a few years of relative trouble free driving. I've had a '16 LR4 for the past year and it's been faultless for 10K so far...fingers crossed! Get's 32mpg and is a joy to drive with the kids and a trailer full of junk. Take the tow hook off and polish it up and you could attend a film premiere (do they even exist these days?!). A timeless classic in the making.
And I sold my XKR for one of these because I was worried it might start costing money ! In the last 6 months I’ve had pretty much everything you had done minus the paint , clocks and brake light + 4 Pirelli’s but I still love it
The reason I replaced my Discovery 2 with a Freelander 2 and not a Discovery 4 are the potential for eye watering bills that seem to plague every 4. Still think they are a beautiful car and I do still covet them but my Freelander 2 does 95% of what a Disco 4 can do in a more wallet friendly package.
I agree, I’ve had my Freelander for 4 years, 2006 plate, never let me down, my boss had a disco 4, 2 months after the warranty ran out the crankshaft went.
@@rb9580 Sometimes sensible head has to overrule car desire heart. They were a £50k car new and running and repair expenses remain that of a £50k car even if they deprecated to £5k perhaps even more so.
Still a lot of car for the money, should run like new now. I have grown to love these disc 3/4 esp watching the UA-cam channel LRTIME, these cars are complicated due to the work it can do with some luxury thrown in.
You should've added the hair dye to the overall costs! 😁 On a serious side, I wish I had an honest mate like you in the motor trade. Great vid as always.
Re the sterling advert, I remember when I first heard about about sterling and I think it was in tillicoutry at the time. I took my mum to the place to buy something and on the way back home she kept on saying that she wished they had a store in Aberdeen, well now you have and the best of luck to all concerned in your latest adventure. PS, I'm truly sorry if I've spelt the name wrong.🙏👍
Great viewing as always and Land-rover Jaguar as you said over complicated for what they are. Possibly hence why they are always at the bottom of the reliability polls. Although the chairman of JLR has said they are addressing the issues. Let's not hold our breath!
Nice video. I had a D4 for five years and no issues apart from a set of tyres and some discs/pads. I do wonder how this one had a long MOT with no advisories and then needed a full set of brakes and suspension stuff.
Not all mot stations are born equal. Public Service Announcement: If you’re buying a D4. Before you hand over the cash, take it to your local Land Rover Indy, and get them to look over jt. They’ll give you a list of things and a cost which you can knock off the asking price. They’ll tell you if it’s a good car or not. If I had done this I’d have saved £2-3k off the price I paid. If the seller refuses, they’re hiding something. Go elsewhere, buy off someone like Matt! 😃
Congrats on the 200k milestones!! As to the Disco, I'm living in Florida now and would love one. Thing is, they only have the V8 that gets around 12mpg of premium fuel!! Just can't justify it, especially knowing any repairs can cost a fortune too 🥺
I was in the market for one in fact I scoured the market for months and eventually bottled it due to the horror stories about the air suspension. Being so keen to get a Landrover I went for the Freelander 2 SD4 HSE with 40k and yes although smaller it does what I need and it’s a nice place to sit

Nice video. I often considering buying one of these LR3/LR4 s as they are known here in Canada. All these expensive repairs scare me . Especially that air suspension. All the best. Keep these daily videos coming. I watch them as I walk the cat in the evening.
If I had bought that vehicle, I would have sorted out all those expenses too - it's got to be "right". Glad you didn't have to do any repairs to the electronic park brake, and the wheel bearings didn't require replacement nor did the two timing belts need replacing on the engine, which were the big ticket items I had thought you were going to mention.
Well deserved 200,000! It’s not easy to keep building the way you have but your continued dedication to quality and knowing your audience has been rewarded…
Always liked the D4 but with no petrol version in the UK Ive stuck with the early l322 and still goes well. Hate the electronic park brake, why people 'need' this rubbish is beyond me. Keep the green oval videos coming.👍
A simpler D4 with a proper handbrake, coil springs (front only), heated leather seats, cruise control, and aircon sounds very much like my D2 V8, which I recall you were very “positive” about, in a light hearted way a few videos ago!! However, the D2 V8 is still a very capable Land Rover that doesn’t guarantee low repair costs either but maybe lower than a D4.
D2 is tied with a D1 as my all time favourite Land Rover - has to be petrol. I end, if I may, by giving ALL the glory to the Lord Jesus Christ Who is God and His Holy Ghost.

So far I have Discovery 4, Discovery Sport, freelander 2012,Q5 or XC60…
I’ll do some more research on your videos 😅
Thanks for all the help!! Keep up with the great work 🎉
Happy to help! I think I’d go for the XC60
It is a good looking car can't deny it, Is there not companies in the UK that can rebuild LR compressors?
Great that u said exactly how is going from buying to ready for sale. For sure will watch more your videos.
200k Subscribers great stuff Matt another great video
200k subs mate, defo Congrats mate, and bloody well deserved 👌👌
Now we all know why we don't own Disco's. Eye popping costs. And I complained about £100 for a ball joint on my Peugeot.
Well said Matt, although the profit deflated you sold it with confidance. Congrats achieving 200k!
Well he should be your best mate now. It did turn out very nice thought.
Freelander with time becoming a good looking classic
I agree, I’ve had my Freelander for 4 years, 2006 plate, never let me down, my boss had a disco 4, 2 months after the warranty ran out the crankshaft went.
Very wise words! I'm on here because I have a FL2 but still covet a D3 or D4!

Sometimes sensible head has to overrule car desire heart. They were a £50k car new and running and repair expenses remain that of a £50k car even if they deprecated to £5k perhaps even more so.
Congrats on 200k subscribers! Well done Matt! Just 199,195 subs and will catch up ;D
I was Considering buying one of these……Thanks Matt! Congratulations on the subscription milestone!
Interesting video, one of the things I learned from you is DON'T buy the cheapest LR or RR so surprised you went for the cheap Disco.
Great viewing as always and Land-rover Jaguar as you said over complicated for what they are.
Possibly hence why they are always at the bottom of the reliability polls.
Although the chairman of JLR has said they are addressing the issues.
Let's not hold our breath!
Matt really is a crucial part of the North western economy
I just adore the Discovery 4… 😍 no orher (real) SUV can match its class, style and image.
Big big congratulations mat 200k done and smashed it!!!! Very happy for you mate 👏
Thanks!
Being so keen to get a Landrover I went for the Freelander 2 SD4 HSE with 40k and yes although smaller it does what I need and it’s a nice place to sit
love these, love land rovers. this would be a better choice rather than the same year RR sport.
Hello Matt,
Firstly congratulations on hitting 200 thousand subscribers, well deserved.
The Discovery looked nice and you’ve done your friend a solid.
Thank you for taking the time to upload another video. Ged
And they say that LR products are expensive to run ...
Plus congrats on your 200K subs !!
Hi 👋🏻 Matt. Your hair 😮 You’ve done the right thing in doing all those jobs as that’ll be a lovely motor now 🤩 Vera & Christian at LR time would of lived that Disco 🤣 great video and congratulations 👏🏻 on 200k subs 😎
Enjoyed the video, just shows what you can miss, but still love a rangy. 👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks! There’s a bit of pressure now
Always liked the D4 but with no petrol version in the UK Ive stuck with the early l322 and still goes well.
Hate the electronic park brake, why people 'need' this rubbish is beyond me.
Keep the green oval videos coming.👍
Matt me ol mucker - these cars were never built to be work horses. They were made to be parked in Waitrose or a cafe on the Kings Road
on wheeler dealers he stripped the compressor down and just changed the seals ..worked a treat
Great video, great message - meaningful outcome and a bloody gorgeous car.
200k !!!
I hope your raffling off a cracker of a banger for us loyal fans boyo
Congrats. These look so much better than the current one that looks like the Herald of Free Enterprise.
Looks like the recent mot wasn't as thorough as it could have been. You did a lovely job on it.
Still nice vehicle, despite high maintenance. They sold like crazy in South Africa. Many of my colleagues have or had them. Nice example!
This video reminds me how expensive JLR cars are to fix!
That’s how much I bought my Kia Sportage. I love it. She’s been everywhere and holding the price. Discovery are lovely vehicles 🚗
Well that escalated quickly! But yes either buying a cheap one and fix her up or buy one that’s all sorted. Cheers Matt!
Congrats on the 200k Matt, you deserve it! Top channel
Thanks!
Thanks!
Hell of a car for 11.5K mind. Glad to hear you had the gearbox serviced with the new sump. Had it not been for you preaching on about gb service I doubt I would of done my 2011 RRS SC.Which has been totally spot on for yonks. So thanks Matt. Also well done for 200k subscribers.
Pleased to hear it! Thanks
