  • This is a long-awaited comparative test of the Land Rover Discovery of different generations. Cars will have to drive the Rock Gate trail, which consists of a series of obstacles: a steep climb with diagonal suspensions, the Rock Gate itself, a S-shaped turn with large rocks and a long sandy hill.

    The old discovery 2 is seriously underrated as a 4x4. I’ve got a 2001 which we’ve owned from new and it just does everything I ask of it. Family adventures up inside the artic circle in Norway 🇳🇴 to southern Spain 🇪🇸 in the soaring heat…. It tows a trailer every now and then and ventures off road on camping trips in wild wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 and Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿.
    It’s collected both my children from hospital when they were born and my eldest passed his driving test in it. The car holds so many memories we will never let it go.

    I think the LR3's short comings were due to tyres. The disco 2 was on maxis AT, the disco 4 on BF Goodrich AT, but the disco 3 was on Yokahoma AVS ST tyres, which perhaps are more geared towards road driving whereas the 2 and 4 were on more off road tyres. I think that's the reason the 3 didn't perform as well as it should have

    Tires play a big role in how they preform, At 18:08 LR3/D3 and 18:34 LR4 or D4 if you compare the thread pattern between the two, the LR4 has more aggressive threads, asymmetrical block patterns larger and deeper grooves in the tires compared to the LR3 that has less aggressive blocks with symmetrical patterns, narrow and shallower groves.
    Deep aggressive asymmetrical grooves in tires on LR4/D4 helps it gain better traction on loose sand and gravely by digging into surface where there's grip, and rocky surfaces the sharp aggressive blocks on the tire help claw/grip on to those rocks thus provides strong traction.
    The LR3/D3 symmetrical shallow less aggressive tires cant provide traction in those situations because of its thread pattern and design, and also wider 285 tires (tho not by much 10mm) did not help either as it cant allow the tire to dig down into surface that has traction, it just floats and spins the tire. If Lr3 had similar tires as D1 and LR4/D4 or more aggressive A/T tires it would have been just as good as its predecessor and successor.
    Conclusion, do your research and choose the right tires for your adventure's environment and know its limitations, just because its stamped or says "A/T or all terrain" on the tires doesn't mean they're created equal.

    • @ronaldrrootiii6040
      @ronaldrrootiii6040 Рік тому

      See there's lots of video showing that more aggressive does not help him stand at all. I think in this case both of the newer models did not are their tires down enough but the reason why the D4 was better is because it had way more horsepower and was able to gain more speed prior and maintain more momentum throughout. If the D3 had more aggressive tread it would have still slow down the same and kept digging the same. I'm not saying more aggressive is necessarily worse but if you don't have the horsepower, not torque, to assist with those more aggressive tires that won't really matter. There's plenty of videos of completely All Season Highway tread going through sand perfect when you drop air to 20 PSI now you are absolutely correct as far as the rest of the video climbing those rocks yes the D3 did need more aggressive tread butt on the sand that wasn't the issue it was lack of power and momentum. 190 horsepower compared to the other two having well over 200 horsepower and less air in the tires. I guarantee if you put the D3 at 20 psi and the D4 at 36 PSI they would do the same because the D4 has more power to gain momentum ahead of time

    • @ronaldrrootiii6040
      @ronaldrrootiii6040 Рік тому

      I'm not trying to knock your whole tire educational post but I've driven with low horsepower diesel vehicles compared to higher horsepower vehicles and the ability to gain momentum is so much greater. I know both of these models were diesel but look at the horsepower ratings. It's clear the way the D4 was going probably three-quarters faster before they'll even started. But yeah you're correct it's just not the reason it failed the Sandhill

      Absolutely! I live in Southern Arizona and we have some extremely tough crawler trails and I admit like a brand-new Rubicon can make things look much easier but I have a D2 just like this one and it will hang in most situations and is 22 years old. If I compared it to a Jeep or Toyota from the year 2000 it is absolutely way better. Only thing I like about a brand-new Jeeps compared to a brand new Defender is the articulation, how wide they are and how low center of gravity. The defender is still good but dimensionally they could have done better on the new one. A little top-heavy. If you park when next to a disco 5 the Disco 5 is actually lower and the body is wider which helps look at the Humvee

    Two things stopped the Disco 3, the driver and the tyre pressures. He was driving a bit slowly and the tyre pressures for sand are best around 15 to 18psi. Those pressures would to some extent counterbalance his slower approach. The tread had little to do with it. In fact the more highway tread lets the tyres “float” more whereas the all terrain chunky treaded tyres would dig in more and are not as effective on sand. You can run a Disco at 10 psi and not roll a tyre off the rim due to the design of the bead lock on the rims.

    The D2 might have only been all wheel drive because it's a 2003. Every year except for 2003 has CDL on the transfer case and you could just add the lever to the interior. At least the ones sold in America. So that means this one did it like a Subaru but with low range haha that's pretty impressive

      @@landrover1155 yeah sometimes people get really hung up on the independent suspension having just a slightly higher ground clearance in the very center of the vehicle but not realizing that they lose the articulation especially even more so when these kind have the right setting that pushes the air Springs maximum height too stiff. Almost makes me wonder if the streets setting of the air suspension would be better because at least it has some positive and negative travel. It's like Land Rover went from knowing what they're doing to just trying to think of something unique and strange to do with every new design. Like achieving the same things in the most complicated way possible as opposed to like a brand new Jeep Rubicon front and rear lockers, front and rear sway bar disconnects, similar type of traction control those guys never talk about and solid axles. Seems like Land Rover would make it least one vehicle that way having the four-by-four Heritage they do

    Great video! LR3 was done dirty. As mentioned above, the tires were the wrong type. Should have been the V8 model. Since it was designed around that powertrain. Should have had the rear locker, if it did ST tires wouldnt have slowed it down so much. Driver should have gunned it up that sandy hill. Out of personal experience, sand mode in the LR3 isn't that great.

Now even with the right PSI the D2 and the D4 in the test had more horsepower than the D3 and could gain more speed and momentum at the bottom of the Sand Hill

    • @zech007
      @zech007 Рік тому

      @@davidedwards4125 Sand Mode allows more slip at wheel before traction control takes over, transmission to hold gears at higher RPM, and engine to be more responsive at touch of the throttle.
      In Sand mode should give D3 an advantage but in the end its using proper made all terrain tires what makes D4 conquer that hill effortlessly and not using a on road orientated/light duty "all terrain" tires.

      @ronaldrrootiii6040 Рік тому

      Yeah once you work out the bugs on yours I'm assuming maybe you haven't had it really long. Then the traction control system stays pretty good. After I did the shuttle valve and rewire I had one ABS sensor go bad after that it only does it if your brakes are really dirty and you press them and they squeak or something. I just don't go down rabbit holes with all the people on Facebook following continuity and testing all this stupid stuff I just have a good scanner and I replace what it tells me. Also you can tell if it's the brakes or the Hub because they will make noise and the ABS sensor electronics are basically electrical vibrations and if the brakes or the Hub are making vibrations that hinder the electronic vibrations which are obvious because you can hear the Hub and feel it or hear the brakes then you know it's those. Otherwise when it's all said and done it's just the ABS sensors most the time. I just don't listen to other people online I just scan it and replace it and it's been good for a long time and when it's not it's easy to fix.
