I'm still scratching head about my DDJ 400. Its decent equipment what i bought back in 2021, but lately i've been liking "Double mashup" songs and its an tough one to leave those tracks fade away to switch next ones. I've been balancing between FLX 6 or go all out on DDJ - 1000. Sure i saw some cheaper sides on a "Serato" side, but i want to stick with Rekordbox.
I'd highly recommend going all out for a 1000 or FLX10 man! The 400 is great, but if you've gone beyond it in terms of skill level, it's time to upgrade
Man, personally I would love to see a company that would allow you to customize what kind of DJ equipment you would ever want (A controller, DVS, CDJ/XDJ, Club, Performance, Portable, Bedroom, etc.) that you could ever want. You can make it as complicated and complex, or as simple and easy to use for beginners (including those whom have autism or don't have any musical, choir, or band experience either). Having the company create your own controller allows you to easy figure out what you want for every scenario you can think of, and you would know ALL the parts considering you would be the one to setup and know exactly how you would set up (plus, it would be fun that way, and it's like ordering a custom made PC or Linux computer/electronic that you know how it works, the ins and outs, the ports, features, specs, etc.)....Some of these controllers I feel ends up trying to be a middle ground, which I don't mind but it makes it difficult for say individuals whom have other activities or events going on that are not DJ related, or features that get removed or replaced over time. So for me, being able to customize how I want my DJ equipment to be would allow me to save so much money down the road, as I can easily just replace the parts over time, and it'll make warranties and issues non-existent 5/10/15/20 years from now. In fact, considering I don't use my DJ controller often due to its massive size, using just the computer, keyboard, mouse, and using keyboard shortcuts on the software program, has helped me become used to using the DJ software program without the controller, DVS, or Club/Music Festival equipment. But again, I'm a person willing to adapt to many different controllers, even if I don't know much of it or wish to look into it so I can improve my performance down the road. I find myself to using a gaming laptop for DJaying, since the graphics card and ram on the laptop not only helps with gaming, but also with intensive tasks say stem creation files, video and audio performance, as well as multiple windows opened and ready to be used without lag or slowdowns. At the end of the day, what matters the most is what music you bring to the table. If they end up being awful or don't work out very well, you can either replace them with something else, or switch to something better for the crowd to like it. In terms of music that I download, I always download it in FLAC, AIFF, or WAV files, as I can always convert/downgrade them to M4A, AAC, WMA, MP3, ALAC, or OGG Vorbis for storage/space saving reasons, but I tend to convert them to MP3 320Kbps formats to keep quality good, but save on storage, whereas the WAV files act as the origin file of the song/audio file itself.
@@djcarlo That too. But again, much like having to choose which mods you want in steam games, those can take a while, and Especially doing trial and error to get used to the controls (even I have yet to get used to some of the controls on VirtualDJ8 for my DDJ-SZ controller so)... Having the DJ equipment customized from the start gives you a good idea of how its made, the designs you create, and can also troubleshoot much easily and find replaceable parts (almost akin to that of being not only a DJ quality assurance tester, but also a tinker of DJ or audio equipment)....But again, until that day comes, we're stuck with companies making too many controllers and equipment for something that may end up discontinued 5/10 years from now.
Thinking of moving from the numark platinum FX straight to the rane performer. Way more stuff than I can handle now, but it'll be there when I'll be ready. Expensive, but it is the only one that fits my wish to learn to scratch and 4 channel mixing.
If I would pick the best DJ gear of this year or all time, A customizable DJ Controller would absolutely be my top favorite of all time (If It Exists That Is).
You missed out the Hercules Starlight which is not hampered by the need to use your smartphone or bluetooth for the output-yeah the output is only mini-jack but it makes it a MUCH better piece of kit
I didn't! I was trying to focus on newer gear here, and even dropped some of the ones that came out in 2022. The Starlight came out in 2019, so I felt like it already had it's rounds in the market 😊
I upgraded from a DDJ-SB3 Serato to the FLX10 Serato and after watching this video I have a few questions on the FLX10. 1) The HPF Color FX seems weak?? HPF on the FLX10 sounds like reducing the vol. Not reducing the bass and doesn't give that squelch sound like the SB3 2) Can the In/Out loop be quantized? I am finding live 1 beat manual loops difficult to get perfect. 3) Do you find you need to push the platter firmly and compared to other controllers is it good? The SB3 had a light nice touch/feel. I am getting used to the FLX10 platter but I expected a much nicer feel. 4) Is there a way of enabling pre-saved loops from the controller in Serato. 5) I assume that the volume on the color FX can't be adjusted. Space for instance can sound very loud depending where it's used. I appreciate all your content. I've been watching for 3 years now. Many thanks!!
1) I didn't notice the difference! Maybe it's hardware vs software in this case 2) Check my latest video on Settings for this one! 3) You can adjust the jogwheel's tension to your liking 4) From what I know, not with Serato. That's more of a Rekordbox thing 5) I think this can only be done in the settings of your DJ program, but I'm not too sure on this one as well
That's.....really it Shamax! The only other ones out there that I know are the older iterations of the RX, Prime 4, Mixstream, etc. Maybe the Prime Go. They're just scattered around other videos
Really surprised the numark nvii isn't mentioned here. It's one of the best 4 channel controllers under 1000 and has screens that allow to get used to not looking at your laptop
I actually get messages about that every year! 2 reasons really: 1) I believe it's been discontinued/archived already (and it's seriously due for an update!) 2) It's pretty old now. 90% of the controllers here were released this year, with the rest still being from this decade haha
great breakdown and transition into your course (not being sarcastic!) one thing I'd mention and presumably you are leaving it out on purpose: pioneer dominate because newer DJs who have aspirations to play in clubs opt to shift to pioneer (at least for mostly electronic). i made the switch from serato and denon and now i only use rekordboxs (but can play on denon gear with iffy beatgrids)
I have this uncommon question, and I have never asked it before. How dj works in band? Or what can DJs do in a band? Just like Dj santa monica from "Man With A Mission" band.
Dj Carlo, I see you got to try out the Pioneer Flex 10. For Serato users, what is your advise for buying a new controller between the Rane 4 and the Flex 10? Thanks, love your work
they need to make a simple, super-inexpensive, under-100 dollar stand-alone one that can run on regular "d" or "AA" batteries, that can have your mp3s loaded directly into it, or use usb sticks. most give sticker-shock or are not standalone. they make regular mixers for under 50 dollars that have usb reader that plays mp3, built in, this is the same principle as two of those....dunno why they don't make a simple one like stated above...🤔
@@djcarlo actually got the thing, and it is really quite nice. it will be used to quasi-dj/quasi-live artist, the sets....use the mp3 player to play a pre-recorded backing set, and the inputs for keyboards for additional parts...to simplify the setup for live gigs...the 49 dollar price, ended up at 61 bucks and some change, with the shipping and taxes.
@@djcarlo I am 95% certain that I'm going to get a DDJ-FLX10. I have used the Numark Platinum FX for two years - also based on your previous videos. I've been looking for something pro-level that's good for scratching, stems, DMX, and that would help me transition to club CDJs. The one feature that would make me change my mind completely would be a designated "key change knob." The only controller that I have ever seen with this is the Denon MC7000, and they are discontinued. Have you ever seen such a feature in another controller? Or should I just try to get something that I can program this into with serato? The reason I want this is because I play saxophone while I mix and I love changing key signatures for the effect and key matching. Here's the MC7000 video with the key change knob: www.denondj.com/professional-dj-controller-for-serato-mc7000xus.html
I love your content, thank you! I would need your opinion on which controller you would recommend for me as a professional DJ. I've been doing this for many years, but what I really value is simplicity and portability. Thank you very much.
Your videos are wonderful for us, but I have a question for you. Actually I’m planning to buy dj controller but I can’t choose what I need to buy. Ddj flx-10 is a good choice but xdj-rx3 is too. Which one do you prefer, yes I know that they are in different categories but which one has the most functionality? Which one do you recommend us to buy in 2024?
Hey Carlo you should do a review on (The Next Beat by Tiësto, DJ Decks For Beginners, DJ Controller, DJ Mixer 2022) would like to know if it's any good.
It's only better than the 109$ unit and that's not by much in my opinion. It does come with tutorials for doing. But if you follow Carlo I honestly think almost anything 199$ is better. Ddj 200 would be a better buy, hercules 200 would be better. I've been researching what deck I want for the past 6 years. Still haven't chosen what I want. But I know what I don't want. And tests ain't it. But it looks OK and has his name on it, so it has that going for it I guess
I have the Tiesto and it’s better than I expected. It’s the same build quality as my Reloop Ready but not as solid as my NI S2 MK3. Mind you I paid something like $125 including tax and shipping.
This is @pioneerdjglobal comment on stems as of today. I've been in talks with the engineering team & they are aware that rekordbox's track separation is no where near the quality that of serato stems. They are working on improving it however we do not have a date when this will be released. Regards
Eh?? I was literally just replying to what you said. I say that about all developers in general; theyre always working to improve their stuff. Honestly, I havent really asked them about it, so I thought you did and were giving an update. Plus, you wrote this on 2 different videos? So I really thought you were just trying to let people know what you've found
I am contacting and commenting everywhere I can. I did ask and this is the response I finally got. My issue here is that all the dj gear channels I follow are still promoting these products. I own an flx10 and none of the flagship, promoted, new features are usable. I keep getting responses from people like 'I'm sure they are working on it' which is fine, no hate here, I respect you that's why I follow you. But we cannot get into this tech race where products are smashed into markets with untested, unusable 'features that inevitable need a new version, feature, upgrade, subscription to work. It's a predatory business model for any company, especially one with a pseudo monopoly on live shows. I just don't want anyone else to make purchasing choices like I did base on features that don't work. Again no hate I'm just suuuuprr frustrated by being stonewalled by pioneer after investing 3200aud. I'd have bought something else otherwise.
Also my bad, I should have clarified my point straight up. Sorry about that, I'm just stressing because I had to hustle so hard for this gear and it doesn't work.
Im trying to get into dj'ing and im trying to pick between the flx 4 and the flx6 gt. Which should i get. I am planning on going more pro in the future and idk if i should break budget.
Hey we pinpointed what it is it is definitely key lock I plugged my flx4 into my computer it sounds fine but when I plug it into my phone it's high pitched idk where to find key lock or the other stuff on mobile to change it
I don't agree on some of these choices, these seems mainly in the Pioneer direction for low-mid hardware. For instance, the Numark Mixtrack Pro fx is not in this list ? Between the FLX4 and 300MK2. It had excellent jogwheels. They don't have a USB-C connector, which for me is a good thing as these are usually fragile. Pitch butttons are also great. Same with FLX6, the NS4FX is very close in price but you won't need to buy a DIBOX or small mixer to obtain XLR outputs. on NS4FX and Mitrrack pro fx, there are ways to map the effects to be able to use the mall. So why are these two not on the list ? I have nothing against pioneer, i saw the FLX6 in multiple parties and it is great but not mentioning these choices seems the WRONG direction (wrong in capital to take your title ;))
Simply put, many of the controllers mentioned are a little older. The NSF4X was featured on last year's list, and the FLX6 only got a mention because of the GT re-release from not too long ago. Numark's latest entry is the Mixstream Pro Go, hence it's inclusion here. I'm sure there'll be differences in next year's list too. Rane will have an entry there I guarantee you
That's exactly why! Because they're old. Like 90% of the controllers on this video were released in 2023. Traktor only released the X1 mk3, and I don't even remember when the last actual controller was released
@djcarlo could you show upgrade from 2deck to 4 deck controller? Hopefully compare Pioneer to Pioneer, Numark to Numark and Hercules to Hercules, so we can see what extra we get.
That's an interesting idea! Though, in essence, you're only really getting a second set of platters to play around with. Software is really important too. Let me see if I can think of a way to make a video like that
@@djcarlo I am asking, because I really need to know do I need go up from Numark Mixtrack Pro to NS4 FX (Mixtrack Platinum shares channel strips on second layer and that might be confusing for a beginner).
I wouldn't say you need to, but having the NS4FX won't change anything, but in my opinion, it's better to have that already, even if you don't use the 4 channels
I love pioneer controllers but it's not well made for serato. The DDJ-SX2 was, but I don't really know which one can truly replace it. I'm looking for a serato compatible hardware with performance pads.
Hi Carlo, I am getting a less used traktor s4 mk3 in USD 420... Shall I go for it?? I love tratkor because of the effects section.... Please suggest is this a wise decision?? your recommendations ??

Dang! Zero to 100 real quick right there hahaha. You'll definitely keep on loving it more and more each day!
i bought it and i liked a lot, it have everything the only thing missing is key shift but it really have all you need and a premium design
saving my gig $ for rane one (somehow managed to do two gigs today, i’m so tired) i got $300 for the first one, idk how much i’m getting paid for the second one yet, but i’ve made ~$100 in tips after counting cash and venmo
Don't burn yourself out too quickly!
@ agreed
unless there’s good money involved haha
Personally I believe the prime 4+ is the best/better standalone system engine dj is a great software system.
It's an amazing piece of hardware indeed! The fact that Engine DJ still gets updated so often is just the cherry on top of it all!
Looking forward to see what 2024 has to offer, i'm really hoping to see both REV-9 & XZ-2
Same here! Can't wait to see what the future brings for us!
That's the dream!! Luckily we can midi map our controllers!
I just bought a DDJ-400, trying to just learn the basics until I get good enough to buy something newer and with more features.
The 400 is a great unit to start with!
Sorry for the timing… where did you find it from? Was it new?
Denon on SC Live 4 🏆
For the price considering is a standalone controller and 4 channel, Serato Pro including. Is the winner of 2024. Just $1,299
It's one of the best all around controllers for home use!
Thinking of moving from the numark platinum FX straight to the rane performer. Way more stuff than I can handle now, but it'll be there when I'll be ready.
Expensive, but it is the only one that fits my wish to learn to scratch and 4 channel mixing.
Go for it! That's a big jump, but a worthwhile one
What's the BEST DJ Gear of the year?
No best. It depends on what the dj is looking for. This is the best time to buy a dj controller. The options we have is insane! Cheers man!
If I would pick the best DJ gear of this year or all time, A customizable DJ Controller would absolutely be my top favorite of all time (If It Exists That Is).
The Hercules 300 mk2 just went on sale for Black Friday, too. Down to $160. I’m so tempted.
I'd say go for it! That's a good price!

It always comes out!
@@simonaguilera1688 I think a name change is in order, DJ Spank Dat, is very hands on 😂😂
Been waiting . This was well worth what I was thinking!
Indeed! I mean, the video is about 3 months old now, but still, it's always nice to have this out with a quick retrospect of the year in gear!
The Starlight came out in 2019, so I felt like it already had it's rounds in the market 😊
okay I'm going back to my gaming mouse + rekordbox setup
Getting a controller is worth it though! You can use both hands instead of just one
@@djcarlo lol for sure man. nice video
I upgraded from a DDJ-SB3 Serato to the FLX10 Serato and after watching this video I have a few questions on the FLX10.
1) The HPF Color FX seems weak?? HPF on the FLX10 sounds like reducing the vol. Not reducing the bass and doesn't give that squelch sound like the SB3
2) Can the In/Out loop be quantized?
Maybe it's hardware vs software in this case
2) Check my latest video on Settings for this one!
3) You can adjust the jogwheel's tension to your liking
4) From what I know, not with Serato. That's more of a Rekordbox thing
5) I think this can only be done in the settings of your DJ program, but I'm not too sure on this one as well

Hercules 500 the best choice by far
Can't wait for a Mk2 of it!
Thx I asked this on the one for this year video😂
Told ya it was coming!
Rane Four FTW!
One of the best this year!
Rane 4 is a plastic cheap builded with a metal plate beneath.
Pioneer FLX 10 is more premium builded
I have both
Ohhh, why do you say so though? I feel like the Rane Four performs amazingly still!
Thank you so much for this video DJ Carlo! Can you please make a video on the best standalone controllers of every price range?
That's.....really it Shamax! The only other ones out there that I know are the older iterations of the RX, Prime 4, Mixstream, etc. Maybe the Prime Go. They're just scattered around other videos
@@djcarlo Oh yes yes. Are the old RXs still in production? Where can I buy one?
I like mixstream pro go. Fits perfectly to my partybox 310 :) Hours of music without electricity
Indeed! Such a great little controller!
Dj Carlo is the best
You're the best man!
love the video!!!❤👍
Thanks man! I really wanted to dive deep into this one!
Really surprised the numark nvii isn't mentioned here. It's one of the best 4 channel controllers under 1000 and has screens that allow to get used to not looking at your laptop
I actually get messages about that every year! 2 reasons really:
1) I believe it's been discontinued/archived already (and it's seriously due for an update!)
2) It's pretty old now. 90% of the controllers here were released this year, with the rest still being from this decade haha
@@djcarlo I can respect that!
@djcarlo I'm hoping to upgrade from my nvii to the SC live 4. It's the most affordable stand alone that I can realistically afford. 😅
great breakdown and transition into your course (not being sarcastic!)
one thing I'd mention and presumably you are leaving it out on purpose: pioneer dominate because newer DJs who have aspirations to play in clubs opt to shift to pioneer (at least for mostly electronic). i made the switch from serato and denon and now i only use rekordboxs (but can play on denon gear with iffy beatgrids)
It really depends overall! I'd like to think that each program has its own set of strengths and weaknesses
I have this uncommon question, and I have never asked it before. How dj works in band? Or what can DJs do in a band? Just like Dj santa monica from "Man With A Mission" band.
It really depends! Some add scratch work, others manipulate the music if they're an electronic band.
the best of all has always been denon dj prime 4 +
It's very solid! That's why they didn't touch the layout I'd say. But they beefed up the interior
@@djcarlo for me denon dj is more professional than pioneer dj...
I have both, I have the prime 4 + and I have the ddj 1000 srt...
I’m just starting out and picked up dj2go touch. Very easy to learn on. My next one if the flx4 to familiar myself with the eq
Yes! The FLX4 will be a great upgrade!
The lotion bit was absolute comedy gold

Of course! Haha, thought I had the video done, but went at it for another straight 18 hours to get it just right!
Dj Carlo, I see you got to try out the Pioneer Flex 10. For Serato users, what is your advise for buying a new controller between the Rane 4 and the Flex 10? Thanks, love your work
i got a DDJ 800 still holds up to this day
It's honestly still great! We're due for an FLX8 though if ever
they need to make a simple, super-inexpensive, under-100 dollar stand-alone one that can run on regular "d" or "AA" batteries, that can have your mp3s loaded directly into it, or use usb sticks. most give sticker-shock or are not standalone. they make regular mixers for under 50 dollars that have usb reader that plays mp3, built in, this is the same principle as two of those....dunno why they don't make a simple one like stated above...🤔
Wait, can you link me to this under $50 mixer? I've never heard of one!
I would go with the Hercules starlight controller to use with Djay. Use a usb hub and you get dedicated audio from the controller.
You can do that too with the DJControl Mix
I use DDJ-1000 and so much happy with it. Hope I will not spill coffee on it during the next years🔉🔉🔉

For sure! Which controller did you like the most?
Still need an upgrade to the numark mixdeck quad....wish pioneer would make one. I love the versatility, serato, flash drive and cdj
Oh yeah. That was a pretty bang for buck controller back in the day

Still, using DJ Pioneer 400
Still one of the GOATs for me!
I love your content, thank you! I would need your opinion on which controller you would recommend for me as a professional DJ. I've been doing this for many years, but what I really value is simplicity and portability. Thank you very much.
The FLX4 would be the best for simplicity and portability I'd say. The rest are heavier on features and whatnot

@@djcarlo why not numark mix stream ?
Your videos are wonderful for us, but I have a question for you. Actually I’m planning to buy dj controller but I can’t choose what I need to buy. Ddj flx-10 is a good choice but xdj-rx3 is too. Which one do you prefer, yes I know that they are in different categories but which one has the most functionality? Which one do you recommend us to buy in 2024?
The FLX10 is more up my alley, as an open format DJ. It really depends on your DJing style and preferences
Thx Carlo for all the good videos. Do you have a review on the Roland DJ 505 ?
Unfortunately, no. I have got a copy of one!
Hey Carlo you should do a review on (The Next Beat by Tiësto, DJ Decks For Beginners, DJ Controller, DJ Mixer 2022) would like to know if it's any good.
I'll still need to get my hands on the Tiesto one
6:15 the DDJ 800 is just superior compare to the flx 6
By a long shot! Though the FLX6GT was worth mentioning due to its newer tech
Thanks!
For sure Jimmy! What's your favorite new controller?
What do I need to buy if I get a Dj controller? Speakers ,, wires and laptop? I just want to use it on social media LIVE…
All those, yes, and the right wires to hook up to your streaming device

This is @pioneerdjglobal comment on stems as of today. I've been in talks with the engineering team & they are aware that rekordbox's track separation is no where near the quality that of serato stems. They are working on improving it however we do not have a date when this will be released.
Regards
Cool! Thanks for the update! I'm sure they're always working to continuously improve their stuff
@@djcarlo c'mon man I respect you but that's a paid partner response.
Between those two, I'd personally go for the FLX 4
DJ Carlo - which is the smarter buy - NS4FX or Inpulse T7? Also throw Mixstream Pro Go in the mix.
Inpulse T7 if you have a good laptop. Mixstream Pro Go if you dont'
Thanks my brother! Hey why so much hate on the net (not from you) for the NS4FX? Have you had experience with the sound quality or anything else?
Honestly, I have no idea. I just don't like the heavy jog wheel, but personally, I say it's pretty great overall!
Hey we pinpointed what it is it is definitely key lock I plugged my flx4 into my computer it sounds fine but when I plug it into my phone it's high pitched idk where to find key lock or the other stuff on mobile to change it
Oh man, I haven't tinkered around much with RB Mobile, but the key lock should be visible in the settings.
Still worth getting the XDJ- XZ?
The minute I buy it, boom another version comes out lol.
I'd say, hold off first. Given that it's a few years older now, I'm also on that "there's gonna be a new one soon" train here 😅
I don't agree on some of these choices, these seems mainly in the Pioneer direction for low-mid hardware.
Rane will have an entry there I guarantee you
@djCarlo or anyone how the heck do you scratch from the sample banks???
Any tips on where to actually buy controllers like the DDJ800 or the FLX10 because no matter where I look it’s always sold out.
Awesome videos btw :)
Try Amazon or Sweetwater! It really depends on your region :)
I know they are old but you didn’t mention none of the Traktor Kontrol S2, 3 & 4
That's exactly why! Because they're old. Like 90% of the controllers on this video were released in 2023. Traktor only released the X1 mk3, and I don't even remember when the last actual controller was released
@@djcarlo I know, but in my opinion this is no reason to exclude traktor kontrol s3/4 mk3, they are still competitive in their ranges of price
hey y'all, do u think the Hercules Inpulse 500 is still a good choice for a beginner like me?
yes. the 500 is a good entry level controller
It is! Just waiting now for a Mk2 of it if ever one comes out
I have a numark platinum fx..upgraded to flx 6..and then srt 1000..to 2 1200 tables and s9...im done haha
Hahaha, good progression there! And yeah, with an S9 and a couple of 12s, all you'll need is an SP1, and you're pretty much set!
Great overview! Especially since i gotta get a new one now.
There is no 4 channel motorized platter system though, is there?
Nope, not yet at least hehe
Gotcha! Such a pity. Someone, make it happen :P
I love pioneer controllers but it's not well made for serato. The DDJ-SX2 was, but I don't really know which one can truly replace it. I'm looking for a serato compatible hardware with performance pads.
