Great course. I've got the FLX6 in the rehearsal studio , but I've bought the FLX4 for the home studio. Love what you've put together in this video. BTW, no offence Phil, but you need to dispose of that beard. It looks like you've been hibernating in the woods over Winter, playing tunes all day with the Squirrels and the Badgers as your only audience. PS. When are you going to put up a decent DJ course on UDEMY? Thanks again. Luis (DJ LuDog)
Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge DJPhilHarris! I’m starting as a DJ and a lot of the information I’m getting from you is helping me a lot. I’m one of your new subscriber. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
I see myself as a qualified dj just by watching this video. This guy is a non profit professional with genuine intentions to training anyone regardless of race and color who wants to be part of best among djs
You can stop searching for beginner DJ tutorials. In this video Phil covers all you need to know to get started. He is a great teacher. I have learned everything I know about djing from Phil. Both from his videos on UA-cam and from taking one of his very valuable courses. Thank you Phil for sharing your knowledge.
Three years ago I didn’t know one thing about DJing. This Saturday, I’m playing at the House of Blues. All because of your training sessions. Sign up for the classes. Worth every second 🔥🔥🔥
Sitting In my jeep watching this Legit down the street from the house of blues. That’s wild! I definitely want to learn and I live in the area. I’ll love to mentor under you if you was to offer
Thanks Phil for your invaluable knowledge. I took your course and have just completed my first 1 1/2 hour set after just learning a year ago. This was a lifelong dream of mine which you helped make come true at the age of 60. Thank you so much!!❤
Waouh! At 41, I thought I'm too old but, your comment just boosted me . I really Love DJing and I'm happy i stumbled on this valuable resource to start with .
You offered a free master-class for beginners and this has really helped me want to dust off my DJ controller and not give up. The other videos were too confusing for me, so I stopped, but now I think I can learn it.
Phil, you’ve changed my life. I had a gig Saturday with all sorts of technical problems. But, in the back of my mind was your advice-a guy with an ipod and banging music having fun is better than a technical genius boring everyone (something along those lines). That made a huge difference in my recovering and carrying on, and ultimately a successful event! Thank you for being real and sharing your wisdom!
As I DJ who has a TY channel showing new DJs and demo my mixing, I really enjoyed this video. This DJ really breaks it down stop by step. He makes it simple for DJs to understand no matter what level you are. It is great that other DJs are sharing their knowledge and not trying to charge it. It's selfish and it is refreshing.
I'm from Mexico and this was definitely the best video to learn DJing on all of UA-cam so far. My English is not polished and I had a hard time understanding several moments of the video, but after listening to it repeatedly I finally managed to understand 95% of the video. *Remember: If you want, you can. 🇲🇽🎧*
Never left a comment anywhere on youtube but I must leave it here to thank you for this! It's such a helpful video and has been a game changer in my effort to learn DJing. Have learnt more from this video than 2 months of prep outside!
DJ Phil Harris is a brilliant one-off. His courses taught me everything I needed to know about mastering my Pioneer/Serato DJ controller and the golden rules of DJing. These rules, once learned, mean you can mix tracks and transition seamlessly from one song to another on any DJ gear you choose to use. No one other than DJ Phil Harris gives you these skills for free in an easy to follow and enjoyable format. Cheers Phil, since I took your course in early 2023 I haven't stopped DJing for pleasure or for friends and family and they are amazed at what I can do. I've also built up a following on Soundcloud. Amazing teacher and all-round nice, talented guy.
Big congratulations Phil for putting this together. To be honest, when I started this hobby, I learned from several other chaps on the internet who were producing similar videos, but it was always a struggle to put information together or link it somehow. After months of education, finally got all pieces together, but it was quite a journey. What is remarkable on your video is that you pretty much covered everything, in a structured way, with all relevant information linked together. This is definitely a complete guide which can get you from zero to a decent level in 2.5 hours. This should be the starting point for all aspiring DJs. Thanks and congratulations!
Phil - you and this video are a gift to the DJing community. Thank you for sharing your knowledge in one comprehensive video with the whole world. I have been DJing off and on since last July and I am really bummed I didn’t know some of the basic things you mentioned (best practices for cue points for one). I am taking your music production course now and it’s given me such enthusiasm and excitement in my life starting at 48 years old. It’s not a crisis - it’s a midlife “rebirth” for me. Thank you thank thank you for sharing this video and being such a great coach in your music production course!
This was a masterclass. I’d love another video more in depth about setting hot cues (maybe with different tracks as examples, I find some work great with the 8bars method but some have extra long intros etc.. so would it be smarter to cut them a bit? Or like I was trying to hot cue Adore u by Fred again and could not find where anything started..) anyways keep up the silly vibes and generosity it feels so good!
Hey Phil, just want to give you a big thank you for putting together this video. There is so much DJ content on UA-cam scattered across many videos, making it difficult for where to start or knowing where to go next. This was a big help as an all in one stop for me to to both find understanding and hopefully kickstart me committing to DJing more.
What an absolute legend! I am an enthusiastic hobbyist producer (Drum and bass) and I was delighted when my daughter mentioned she wanted to learn to DJ (a DJ I am not!) I went and got the FLX4 from Argos and here I am 1 day later watching a master craftsmen give so much advice in 1 video that I am stoked to get this party started. Hopefully the daughter will remain interested, but if not I will have up skilled anyway. Thanks so much for this, and one day who knows :) And of course liked and subbed.
Phil, near the end of 2022, I started to get more serious with DJing and the very first video I watched was by you. Everyone scrolling for a great intro video, STOP scrolling, you have found it here! Great video Phil. I used to play vinyl 20 years ago. Tried picking up where I left off about 10 years ago using a controller and found it a bit overwhelming and gave up. Just bought another controller and thought I'd give it another crack. You explained the grid, setting cue points. Honestly, just explaining the grid was a massive help and my mixes immediately, I mean immediately sounded better just from being structured better. I bought a 4 channel mixer and I'm using serato. I'd like to switch to recordbox, but pioneer charge a fair bit for equivalent software even though I'm using a pioneer controller.... Can't wait to check out more of your videos... cheers!
You dont know how much i appreciate your time brother. So much info and im not even halfway. So in depth with your little secrets. I will be buying everything i need to give djing a shot and this is by far the best video ive seen. Thank you and god bless you man. 🙏
Perfect way of saying I’m not here for the money. I’m here for the opportunity to make people smile and feel good even if only for a couple hours. Sometimes that couple hours is all one might need to get out of a funk.
Omg I’ve been dreaming about djing about five years now and finally one month ago I got my first mixer but been so overwhelmed on where to begin I bought a course but I feel like it didnt cover the basics and I’m so grateful you showed up on my algorithm, all my fears are coming but I want to do it anyways, its now or never, thank you thank you thank you
Absolutely phenomenal video. I just decided I wanted to look into DJing 2 days ago and most lessons I could find barely covered anything more than basics. This is extremely comprehensive and so simple to follow along with when I needed to. If you ever retire DJing you'd make a phenomenal full time teacher of it.
Your way of delving into details of DJing in all respects are rare in the internet ! Just few days of viewing your tutorials and the confidence to move forward has engulfed me ! Keep on the good work sir
Picked up a set of the DDJ-400s this time last year, gave up a few times trying to learn after watching boring drawn out tutorials, this no BS guide is a game changer, learned more in 2 hours than the past year, thanks Phil
Phil, great video! I appreciate you sharing the knowledge. Just a note regarding what you said at 32 minutes about "drums not having a tone," I would disagree and say the opposite. Drums, while being percussive instruments, also do produce tones.
Dont worry about the people thinking this is too long of a vid. Its not in the grand scheme of a insturment you play for years. Longform content still the way. I used to dj years ago very little and im getting back into it heavy. Love the wealth of knowledge noe
Hello Phil! First I would like to congragulate you for doing this! I think it's the most accurate, beginner-friendly and profesionally dj course. Thumbs UP! Thanks for sharing this with us! I
I appreciate the frequency mixing with just beats. So many tutorials online use random songs I've never heard of, so it's hard tell what sounds are coming from which track. With a simple kick drum, I get to focus on how you're transitioning between the two. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
6:43 dude.. i remember listening to the first live mix ever 4 years ago thinking exactly that "wow that was 3hrs of mixing and apart from moments here and there it feels like it was one very long song"
What a legend. Amazing video. I can’t believe this is free! I’ve learned more here in 2 hours for free than I have spent trying to search courses and UA-cam for years. Mad! Thanks so much man.
🤗 Many thanks for this video. I knew most of them but it's perfect to have everything in one video. For beginners, your video is ideal for getting complete instructions and an overview of everything a DJ must be able to do. Good work. Please keep going.
I haven't even watched this video, but I just popped in here to say thank you on behalf of those starting out. Most of us djs never had this when we started, so big props to you and others that take time out to share your knowledge 👍🏾
There was nothing like this when i started out, i just winged it, if it sounds right it was right, this video would of been a god send back in the day, i learned to beat match on vinyl so going to controller was easy just thee amount of buttons confused me lol, but with practise you get there..

Hey man, just wanted to say that I really appreciate this whole guide! You easily explained a lot of topics I had trouble understanding and also touched upon some that I didn't know the importance of. I'm glad that I found your channel and I'm super excited to begin my DJing journey with knowledge gained for this video. Thanks man, keep doing what you're doing, cheers!
You are like that one tutor in school whose classes everyone used to attend because they made the lessons so easy to understand. So many videos out there but this is my go to. Thank you. Cheers
WOW. Just wow, this is the best tutorial I have ever seen about DJ'ing. The world must appriciate this kinda work and effort into this, giving away all your knowladge and experience for free. Will be following you from this day!
While I may not be a novice DJ, I found this video to be quite informative. One tip that particularly stood out to me was learning how to set up hot cues for house music. This skill can be invaluable for seamlessly blending two tracks, especially in fast-paced situations. Loved the video and Highly recommended Keep up the good work Phil Harris
Brilliant information Mr. Harris. Aside from you being a professional DJ, you take the time to give very realistic examples. Your honesty and practicality are very much appreciated.
Omg! 4 days ago??!?? I bought my ddj 400 and decided to learn djing at the right time! Learning everything from you and I feel so knowledgeable already! Thank you so much for not gatekeeping this info, I would've felt so hopeless without you explaining it all so clearly. Really falling in love with this community as well 😍
Thanks a ton Phill!! I’ve been a touring rock musician and producer/engineer for a long time. Started writing a lot of electronic music recently and wanted to learn to DJ. This video inspired me, made it fun and your teaching method is right on par for my ADHD hah. Thanks a bunch brotha for taking the time to record and put this video out. Cheers!
I just found this. I am learning how to DJ and this has been my guide. Thank DJ Phil Harris for making this video and teaching us the basics and more of DJing
The "tangents" are the best part, no need to rush through this video. I committed 2hours and 38 mins to watch this. GIVE ME ALL THE TANGENTS AND EXAMPLES. so excited to go practice now!
Already watched once, need to go over the cue and memory parts again and the mixing part but I certainly feel more confident now starting out...rather than just guessing Thanks! May look into a course
Im currently doing a paid course and honestly your video helped me SO much to get started. The course doesnt give you a lot of ideas on where to start coming from 0 experience and this video saved me a lot of time struggling and getting frustrated. Thank you so much!!!!!!
Thanks for the time and effort doing this video... people like you makes this DJing thing to continue and get more people in to it... great job 👏 👍 👌 🙌 😀 💪
I've been asked to DJ for my best mates wedding in August so this will become my bible to get started. Thank you mate, appreciate the knowledge transfer and the continued energy for 6 hours no less!
I’ve watched this video twice and after finally getting an flx4, im in the process of watching it for a third time with the controller in front of me so I can take it all in. I’ve learnt loads from your videos so thank you 👍
Thank you for explaining the hot cues to me, I really had a hard time in knowing how to set them properly but now there is a massive improvement in my mixes, you are the only one explaining this so perfect. I raise my hat to you !!!
Thank you, amazing video!! I have a friend that wants to become a DJ, I'll send this video to him, maybe he'll be able to begin his journey of being a successful DJ!!!

Cheers!

The "tangents" are the best part, no need to rush through this video. I committed 2hours and 38 mins to watch this. GIVE ME ALL THE TANGENTS AND EXAMPLES. so excited to go practice now!
Ha glad you liked the tangents!
Already watched once, need to go over the cue and memory parts again and the mixing part but I certainly feel more confident now starting out...rather than just guessing
