As a hobby DJ doing a few house parties a year these are things I suggest: 1. If you've never DJed before, start with buying just a dj controller (like DDJ-400). If you already own any type of speakers, use those and find good quality sources to rip. This is to check if you truely like DJing or if it's just one of those sort term things you'll waste way too much money on. 2. If you like it, buy better speakers (preferably studio monitors). You can either upgrade your song quality by getting a subscription to a DJ pool, or you buy audio enhancing/analyzing software like Platinum Notes 4 and Mixed in Key (this is what I did). Remember to use good quality rip sources otherwise take a subscription. 3. If you enjoy DJing even more now and you want to try small parties/venues, decide whether you want to use the same speakers or upgrade to PA speakers (monitors are better for close range small groups and PA to really go LOUD!). I upgraded to a big PA and subwoofer combo for parties. I also bought a bluetooth adapter in case I don't want to DJ. Even if you're a bit of an audiophile like me, you'll never hear the difference between quality rips and the official sources unless you use insanely expensive speakers. A one-time purchase of audio enhancing software in combination with being able to rip anything on the internet was worth way more to me than getting a DJ pool subscription that does not include everything I search for. This is just from my own experience but consider the choices. Best of luck😁
I'd add a Traktor Kontrol S4 mk3 to the under 1000$ range. It's affordable, has decent build and sound quality, and has 4 channels. Also balanced XLR outputs and phono/line inputs. It also comes with the Pro license, so no need to pay extra for the software.
@@djcarlo The soundcard and analog amplifier of the S4 mk3 still hasn't been matched by a Pioneer controller (maybe the Rane Four exceeds it) as well as the moving jog wheels puts the S4 mk III ahead of most Serato controllers. I’m on the FLX6 in my home setup honestly a really good all round controller definitely helped me when transitioning to cdjs and rx’s in clubs and festivals.
I was lucky enough for one of my mates to sell me his ddj1000 for $500 because he bought cdj3000's. The 1000 is the perfect controller IMO, it has everything you need and it's very similar to club standard CDJ's so it's easy to swap around. I bring mine to gigs and when I play at clubs it's an easy transition to hop onto a CDJ straight away. It hasn't got cheat effects like scratching fx and merge fx so it is a good representation of your actual skill as a DJ.
Prime 4 all the way. Has some of the most flexible / extensive effect controls, 4 decks, EQ for both mics and booth, and is built like a literal tank. The only downside is the jogs are not full CDJ sized.
@@djcarlo You're so right lol. Since I only use it for smaller events that dont require much "DJ'ing", I never realized how complicated the effects are to use lol.

Question to the sound tech: Why are you here? If the sound tech is "Hold on, I'll open the door myself" type of guy or gal, then this feature is great. You don't need to sac highs or lows on the mixer for this, making DJing experience comfortable to say the least.

So, there is some things that you forgot to mention about the RX3. Software that can be used are, Serato, Recordbox, Trackor w/template download and any DAW, yes the whole unit is midi mappable. Good reviews! It must be said: I played on the Denon Prime 4 - it reads Rekordbox libraries from USB thumb drive flawlessly! Very impressed. Just not a fan of that "Microsoft Windows 98" neon green.. Roland uses it as well. Blech! lol The Pioneer XDJ-RX3 should have a 4-channel mixer at that price.
Yes, but I guarantee they have great selections! I believe they used to allow you to look, but some people found ways to hack around it and download for free
It's strange the rx3 is actually cheaper in the UK and under 2k. Also within the under grand I really thought the pioneer DJ 800 would have got a mention I guess because it's rekordbox only it missed the list. I have the 800 and the 1000 both great controllers IMO. I would say the xz is closer to the 2 grand price also plus it's serato and rekordbox.. I wonder if both are due to be replaced by pioneer soon
Dang, none of the sites I checked out went below 2k for the RX3, either in USD or GBP. The 800 was actually on my draft for the list, but yeah, since nothing new has happened with it, I dropped it for time. Given as well that lots of new RB-compatible controllers came out this year.
I know this controller is very old but the DDJ SZ is still worth it till today 4 channels and sure the cheesy horn sound but it runs on serato and also secretly on rekordbox for some reason it’s so overlooked and if was 22 10 years ago I’d just buy that and keep it and stick with serato since I’m doing basic events and club gigs where I don’t have to do crazy tricks or need for the newer effects

I reckon that, at a price of less than 900 dollars, the N.I. Traktor Control S4 MK3 is still one of the most professional controllers, ahed of its time in 2018 and still more professional than many controllers in that price rane. What do you think?
I agree! Too bad they're losing DJs as Pioneer DJ takes control and dominance over the market with Rekordbox DJ!
@@djcarlo I actually don't like tis dominance of one company only. And, at the end, is it really so much better to justify its dominance? Or only they are really good in marketing and coming always out with new products? Like if a good DJ really need always new products every yea. What do you think?
if you are on a smaller budget. I would Recommend the Pioneer SB-2 or SB-3. I got an sb2 for £120 used.
Pretty good price there! Though the SBs are already on the older side
Great video… sad you didn’t list Native Instruments products… maybe because your style is different but for techno and Traktor is the best… sound card is amazing and the quality of the product is great… Traktor is for other kind of DJs…
Oh beleive me Tony, I would have! Traktor was my first love. Even my Redbull set was done with Traktor! But, NI hadn't released anything new for years at the time, so I had to give way to gear with updated technology
REAL DJS CAN PLAY ON ANYTHING BE YOURSELF CAUSE AT THE END OF THE DAY THE PPL JUST WANNA HEAR GOOD MUSIC THEY DONT CARE WHAT YOU USING
That's true! But everyone needs to start somewhere, and to have the right controller that suits their needs!
0:12 That's the biggest DJ gear i've ever seen
Bwahahaha, size does matter sometimes
I returned my DDJ-400 and got the Numark MixTrack Platinum FX 2-3 years ago. Seems like I made a mistake if only the Pioneer's have the shortage, lol. Nonetheless it has been great for me. Love the weighted wheels!
To each their own DKizzy! Honestly, the weighted wheels were my deal breaker because they get in the way of scratching, but my other friends who have that and the NS4FX all love 'em! So not a mistake on your end haha
@@djcarlo it should still be included whether it works for you or not.
Great video again Carlo! I find it difficult to beat a DDJ-1000 and surely am enjoying mine every time I use it.
It's pretty much my golden standard for laptop-based controllers, especially if you're used to Pioneer gear! The Prime 4 is a very good competitor though!
Any thoughts on the Rane DJ FOUR @@djcarlo @DJ_PeterSteel
I'd upgrade to have better keywords in the video description. Great video that more people need to find out about!
Oh, thanks for that Carson! Appreciate the help there
Dang that's crazy i just got my ddj-400 a few months ago for $130.
(actually $70 b/c found out one of the tempo faders was broken so i had to fix it, so knocked the price down after)
nice one dude! What a find! Try selling it on ebay and make a huge profit!
@@djcarlo thinking about it, but id also gotta think about what i want to upgrade too.
flx4 is on massive backorder, so don't want to deal with that, flx6 is pretty much where i'd want to be price wise, but im partial to the ddj-800 for the extra features and also better I/O
thanks for the video helped out alot
Glad it did! Make sure to practice this well to get all the skills down!
That black and white kinda got me(in a good way).
Haha glad you made it to the end! You're a real fan!
the controller i currently use is the numark dj2go2 its probably one of the cheapest dj controllers at $89 its pretty small but it treats me well
should aslo say im also pretty new to dj😄
Oh dang! I haven't seen one of those in ages! Lots of people vouch by it!
The Rx3 is nutty. Love the deck so fucking much
Right?! It's an insane beast of a controller!
or just open used market and get decent stuff for affordable price. Got Denon DJ SC5000 prime with X1800prime controller for 1.4k. No regrets.
Also true! But sometimes it's hard to find a good deal regardless. Really depends on your local markets and region
Thank you!
You're very welcome Feliu! Hope this helps you choose a brand new controller!
Let’s be honest , Traktor software is more superior in all aspects that any other dj software . Can you tell me if DDJ Flex4 worls with Traktor Pro 2 or Traktor DJ 2 for iPad ? Thanks !
Unfortunately, no it doesn't from what I recall. Traktor WOULD be the superior bet, but they take their time between updates. Even with gear!
Got the numark platinum FX for 250 bucks. It's the 2channel parent of the NS4fx. Looks like the most ergonomic and best built entry level controller.
Pretty solid controller! Only gripe is that if you're a scratcher, the jog wheels are heavy
Preffer dj control starlight over the cellphone/white version
That's fair!
Inpulse 500. Who is giving you 2 aux and a mic volume you can actually use on the controller instead on the back of it that you will never use.
Plus the color coded pads, big enough tempo sliders for $300. STOP IT. GO GET IT!!!!
It's one of the best in terms of value for 💰!
Your videos are really helpful . Thank you
Glad to hear it! Just trying to do my best for the DJ community!
i would like to take dj classes from you one day.big fun of yours kabayan.greetings from malaysia
I have DJ courses for sale on my sellfy page! :D
Rocking a pair of turntables 🔥🔥 But my last 2 gigs literally did on ddj 200 and it turned out amazing
Tbh, it saves you a LOT on the physical stuff that could go wrong! Glad you enjoyed yourself bud!
where did you gig at on a ddj 200? just curious
@@maxtaylor12 it was a school party or something like that
I'm in love with my XDJ-XZ unit
It's a good unit Matt!
Great video...awesome breakdown of every gear at their price range. Now there are beginner DJs who have bought gears you mentioned here...I suggest, What about making a video on how DJs take care of their controllers at home....like do you just leave it out in the open? or put it in a case or put a cover when you're not using it? or what to do when knobs and fader feel loose?
Oh. That's a great suggestion! I keep mine in boxes, but I've got a list of other ways to take care of them!
The Prime 4 is honestly amazing for what it can offer! But yeah, the color is just....oof for me haha
I havd the Hercules as more of a toy to mess around with while on the go..one thing lacking is the headphone cue
It's still fun to mess around with, ain't it? Quick practice mixes and whatnot
@@djcarlo it sure is, I bring it everywhere I go and with the expansion pack, you can do on the fly remixes
the new Numark Mixtrack platinum gives you the most bang for your buck. Screens on the jogwheels, Paddle FX and it's a 4 track
It was on the first draft for this list, but the NS4FX just felt better for me. Plus, it has XLR outputs
I got lucky with the ddj 400 when I got it earlier this year for $229.99 at amazon
That's a really REALLY good price yo!
That site you're promoting doesn't even have a search function without a paid subscription. This is the type of you buy before you like situation.
Yes, but I guarantee they have great selections! I believe they used to allow you to look, but some people found ways to hack around it and download for free
Traktor Pro s4 mk 3. However, im saving up for an Allen & heath xone: px 5 mixer + a pair of reloop 7000s
Now that's a good upgrade! Good luck on that! I'm sure you'll enjoy that set!
Now I'll definitely buy the DDJ-1000SRT
It's totally worth it!
very informative video 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼💡
Thanks Jonathan! I like spreading the knowledge!
There’s dozens of us on Roland 707m. Dozens..!
And yet, I haven't gotten my hands on one 😅
Awesome video as usual Carlo!! What are your opinions on the XDJ- XZ?
Its pretty good, but some of the others here beat it out
I just afforded it! Let's go! 🎉
Let's goooooooo!
I’ve got a pioneer sr2 and I love it. Debating on upgrading to the srt 1000 but I’ll probably still keep my sr2 for portability
That's a good backup to have! The 1000 is near perfect, but it's also BIG
I have an SB3!! AND IT IS AWESOME
The SB3 is pretty awesome Adrian! I did some videos on it a while back
I know this controller is very old but the DDJ SZ is still worth it till today 4 channels and sure the cheesy horn sound but it runs on serato and also secretly on rekordbox for some reason it’s so overlooked and if was 22 10 years ago I’d just buy that and keep it and stick with serato since I’m doing basic events and club gigs where I don’t have to do crazy tricks or need for the newer effects
The SZ was the flagship back when it was released, and indeed was pretty amazing for what it offered!
Wow I was expecting to mention XDJ XZ! 😊
It was almost on here!
I going to buy DDJ1000SRT today, San Jose California,,,wooo...hoohooo....:) !!! Thank you sir
Thats awesome Raj! Congratulations!
@@djcarlo thanks, I bought 1000 SRT AND RCF SPEAKERS YESTERDAY
2:14 That a impulse 300
Good catch! When I put this together, that was one of the last clips I inserted for the video, and I always thought it was a 500!
For me Roland DJ-707m is legit in the "less than 1000$" range
That's one controller I still need to get my hands on
i still have my old hercules rmx2 haha and it works perfect
It's not *that* old Tobi! Hahaha, but as long as it serves its purposes for you, then you're good!
@@djcarlo i love it because ist small and out of metal aaaand xlr thats not offen with small Controller ❤️
I have the XDJ RX3 and XDJ XZ, i still love the XZ also!😊
those are both good units! Will you be getting CDJs next?
@@djcarlo To be honest, I have 2 cdj’s 3000, but for a strange reason I use my controllers more!😀
Does the DDj-400 have something, that the FLX-4 hasn’t?
Top of mind, no. The FLX4 is supposed to serve as a replacement I believe, so they upped the features on it!
1. i buy nothig made in china. 2. i buy only PIONEER made in Japan for the Christian EDM i am working on. The rest dj gear on the market is just for Toy R. Us. 3. my budget for my studio in the garage is USD $100,000. My track is due to release one year from today. Themed from Boris B. using A.I. prompt for mix. It's God's music. ChatGPT API will be helping me to create the mix.
Can't wait to hear your ChatGPT mix!
REV 1 FTW dude that controller is a beast
It's pretty great for a budget controller!
No Pioneer XDJ XZ? I sold my CDJ set and bought the XZ. Much easier to use and carry and has all the stuff that’s on a CDJ-DJM set.
Not on this one! Wanted to focus on newer offerings for standalones, but the XZ does still hold up.
Please make tutorial, how can we remix a song with FL studio or any other stuff. This the 2nd time iam asking for it.
This is a DJ channel but let's see what I can do! Thanks for the comment~
@@djcarlo glad to know that
Just waiting for my sc live 4 to be posted hopefully today fingers 🤞
Ohhhh, excited for you Higgy!
I brought my DDJ400 last year as my starter controller for $250 dollars and now I'm about to sell it for $400 to use for a DDJFLX6 haha what an investment
You made a profit!
