  • This week we lost the one of the main things we fell in love with on this Dream homestead. This week we endured massive devastation as our Dram Homestead was reduced to a green mess. Its not the first time we've faced adversity at our 250 year old Farmhouse restoration and we will come back even stronger.

Rob, don’t build that negativity into your home. Take a break, regroup, and go again with a fresh mental attitude. You’ve got this man!! Clare, great job on saving the Queen! Also beautiful work on the floor, it’s coming along nicely. Love you guys and have a great weekend. 💚😊

Aww I feel for you with the trees because I know it goes against the grain for you to have to take them down but ultimately it is your only option especially like you say they have now lost their buffer against the wind. I wanted to give you a big hug the pair of you because it’s been a cruddy couple of weeks for you. It will get better though and you’re so close to the time that you can take a step back and do stuff when you feel like doing it and not under the pressure of the grant deadline.
Aww the bees, just wow! Look at them all. That must feel good seeing all of them choosing to be there. I was wondering why the queen couldn’t get back in the hive but you answered that with the clipped wings.
I did love your timber analogy Rob, I feel like it’s quite fitting in terms of doing a renovation yourself. I’m sure in time you will look back fondly on how much heart and soul you have put into the place, but yep difficult in the moment to see that. Especially when things like then polisher packing up right at the wrong time.
Love the drone footage it shows just how many trees you have everywhere, your house is like a little secret haven within them. Sad to see the big ones go but you have planted so many other trees around the place, so you’ve already put more back in than you’ve lost. ❤

Ahh thanks guys. Always hard losing something that may have around for 60 plus years. Plus all of the wildlife and environment that goes with them. Lots of tidy up to do and for sure lots of firewood and no more sleepless nights during the storms 😊 Thanks for the virtual hugs and yes it has been a cruddy couple of weeks, onwards and upwards 💪

It is entirely to be expected that you are experiencing some levels of exhaustion at this stage in the project. Apart from your incredible hard physical work, the mental strain of making so many decisions also takes its toll. Re your metaphor abt the recycled wood resembling you & Claire, I think a better analogy would be to say, "look at us, we have mastered countless new skills & can turn our hand to almost anything".
It's a shame abt the trees but they were monsters & needed taming. Pat yourselves on the back.

The heart goes out to you both. I love trees. I’m Building on an old site and just outside my boundary wall there are beautiful, huge and very old trees. I had to remove two smaller ones and hated it. The bigger ones if they fell the wrong way, my house would get it. The saving grace for me is that the storm winds when they come are southerly or westerly both of which would push them away from the house. I’m hoping not to have to remove them but will need to keep an eye on them as branches falling could do damage. Keeping all fingers crossed. At least you still have some lovely trees and as you said, while they’ll take time to grow, you’ve planted lots more.

As sad as it is that your trees were cut, it's very hard to find tree trunks with a decent diameter these days as they don't let them grow for that long, so you have the perfect opportunity to make trunk side tables or coffee tables with a glass top or with the right varnish use them as outdoor furniture for a patio.

There is an argument for cutting out all the pine trees and re-planting with deciduous. Oak,wild cherry, walnut, etc and your long line next to the field which was cut back you could plant a hawthorn, blackthorn and buckthorn hedge-blossom and berries and good for bird nesting….

Sorry you had to have it happen when you’re at the end of a long hard slog re-building your home. The last bits you’re doing are really tough dirty jobs. It will be worth it in the end. Hello there to you both!
Sorry about your trees. I myself had a Tornado come behind my house about a month ago. The land behind my house was cleared of trees to take to mill and make into paper pulp, mostly pine trees, 60 foot and more. There was then a wide clearing , a large area directly up to the back of my property, so the trees trees remaining adjacent to my back fence were vulnerable and the small tornado came down that path of cleared trees and took one very tall tree like this you just had cut down. It fell root and all over into my back fence. Took me $300. To get chopped up and shoved back onto cleared land. Then that much money again to repair the fence. I had to pay as insurance deductible was higher. But house was fine, missed it by about 15 feet thankfully. The storm came and went so fast, you only have a. Knute to move, so glad it was daylight and it wasn’t a big tornado. It took Out another large tree next house down hill too, then off it evidently went. Always Something when you own a house for sure!
It’s good to keep trees back off a good bit from hour house and buildings as lightening can hit them so fast. So figure it a blessing in discusses to get the most of your trees cost free taken out.
You’ve come a long way this past year, getting through the cold brutal winter working in the rain and freezing temperature and all that, plus living in close quarters in a caravan too. You’re getting there now, on the last run so to speak. Take a deep breath, eat well, enjoy your fresh garden veggies and go for it! This Christmas will be a lot different, so one last push you guys! Smile😊 All the best, Maureen.

Do give yourselves credit. You are doing what is best . I suggest very strongly, to use you native trees. Start at 7 gallon. Do give them at least 10 feet of space , on center of the trunk. That is what 2.5 meters?? Ash, birch, Holly, Oak are a good starting point. Talk to your Nursery people. They can best educate you and let you know where , how far away from your structures and Power lines to plant each one. Or if you have County extention offices, talk to them. Always back it up with your own reseach. 'The more you know, the the shorter the road.' Good Luck! I ADORE YOU! I know you can weather this storm. Just look how far you have come!!❤❤

2.5 m is even too far really. 1.75 to 2m is the standard in forestry. This allows the crowns to close quickly so the ground vegetation doesn't provide long term competition for the trees without the need of pesticides. I even plant closer and I can thin after 5 years and continually going forward.

Rob be careful in the way you submit your invoices for grant. People don’t seem to be getting the full amount 70,000.
Take for example if you submit 10,000 for a kitchen and the grant allows 7000, you get only 7000. go towards it.
    70,000 - 7000 = 63000. Of a grant left.

I know you’re sad about the trees but if they’re rotten at the base they would have gone over at some stage, even a small amount of weeding or ivy removal could have sent them over, I had one go at the edge of my land went sideways into the neighbours, thank god no one was in their garden the root was over 7ft tall 😳 the crack when they go over is frightening. If the Queen is out of the main hive would the bees no accepted her back in? Or would they attack her?

I often think that huge trees close together is not a good thing. They are fighting for light, nutrients in the soil and space which may lead to health problems. Do the spruce trees normally have an age limit? Hopefully you could find some young ones and given them some safe space to grow to their best. Trees are magnificent though. Best wishes.

Counting the rings the trees were 60/70 years old. Their position on the old stone wall was not good and it was here at the bases that we started to see the root plates move which apparently is a sign that they are not as stable as they were 🙂
