MAMMOTH JOB we've put off for 10months
Last year, 50+ trees were cut from our land during a power line upgrade, leaving us with an enormous task. In this video, we start to chainsaw, split, and stack enough firewood to keep us warm for the next four years. Along the way, we face setbacks, including breaking 2 chainsaws, and tackle some of the hardest manual labor we've ever done.
To make the most of every part of the trees, we shred branches and leaves to create mulch for our garden, ensuring nothing goes to waste. Join us for grit, determination, and sustainable living here in West Cork.

Little tip to rob over here in Newfoundland you can buy the carbin tip bar chains , don’t know if you can get them over there but they are fantastic but they cost a little more just a taught
That’s what I use also I have 2 of them a little 170 and a 250 I love them. Can’t wait to see all the plans for your garden looks awesome love it you guys you to are unbelievable keep it up ❤❤
Job well done. I know its alot of work, but it will be well worth it when its all complete.
My back was hurting just watching all that work! You will have wood for years. You two are the hardest working pair on youtube - so proud of you for tackling that.
Wow, thank you! Not the easiest jobs but once you get stuck in, and see progress, it's not too difficult 💪
Satisfying progress! You two are a formidable team
We try 😉
Happy New Year What a job to tackle good luck
Happy new year! 😊
Amazing plans, love that you attached pictures of potential ideas to give us all a clear view. Can I ask where you sourced your 1000 native hedgerow whips from? Keep the wonderful content coming 😊
Future Forests 😊
Great saw you have bought now. You might have been able to start the lidl saw by manually spinning the recoil using a drill. I have not actually done it with a saw but I have with a tractor mower. Might be useful info down the line 👍
Thanks for the tips! It's great to have so many handy men commenting 😊
Love the finish of the larch cladding really sets off the extensions separating modern from the old. I'm pouring concrete floors at the moment for my off grid home/cabin and I had ordinary steel cladding in mind but now I'm wondering how larch cladding would compare in price. What was the cost of larch from your local sawmill?
I will check with Rob and come back to you 👍
Your American subscriber gave you good advice. My husband bought his Stihl chainsaw 30 + years ago. He doesn’t use it weekly but gives it a workout pretty often. We have kept a wood stove going nonstop during the cold months here in southeast Kansas USA to supplement heat in our home for almost 35 years. Wood of choice is “hedge” or Osage Orange. It’s not native to this area but was brought north from Texas, etc. well over 100 years ago, used to create hedge rows. It has a variety of characteristics, not all positive. If not controlled it will create thickets. The biggest advantage for heating: dense, heavy wood that basically doesn’t rot and burns long and hot. The stihl has cut through many cords of hedge to warm our home and is still going strong.
Wow, that is fantastic to hear that it is still going strong 💪
Fab!
Thanks 👍
Just remember you will sadly lose your ash trees. Dieback is taking most of them. Such a tragedy.
Yes it is a sad state of affairs for the Ash 😔
Hey lovelies you continue to brighten my day 😊❤
Our pleasure! Thankyou 😍
i need to do the same !! nice chainsaw!!
Go for it! 😉
Best make ever, you get what you pay for 😊
Completely 👍
That was a lot of good hard work! Looking good.
Thanks 👍
Those slices of pine will make great steps or retaining walls for your many landscaping projects, as pine is not so great for burning in wood stoves as others have mentioned! Doing a great job on all that carbon though 😊. Nice kick Claire…well first one anyway! Cheers from bloody hot Oz! 😎🇦🇺🦘
Yes aren't they lovely! I wanted to keep them as stools and we have plans to keep other pieces for benches 😊
Upgrade was a really good investment, especially with so much wood to cut, it will pay for itself in no time and make the job so much quicker. make yourself a sawbuck out of 4 x 2 as well to stop cutting the ground! saves having to resharpen the blades. i have a smaller stihl chainsaw and it has been amazing in helping process free wood I wrote the above as you bought the stihl, good to see you agree at the end of the video... just think HOW much the wood would cost if you bought it!
ps spruce is a sod to split
Thanks Mark, we have a kind of sawbuck, we must start using it more 👍
Are you not allowed to pile up all the small stuff and burn it?
We may well do this at the end 👍
If Rob had kept his iconic bright yellow trackies he'd never get "lost" in the woods! You could located him from outer space lol!
Lol 🤣🤣
Just keep thinking of all the FREE heat it'll give you for a long time to come guys!
Bring it on Phelim!
I love your videos and enjoy them every week. I read the comments on how people were loving the video so I have to give my honest feedback. This one was extremely hard for me to watch. The sharp contrast took all detail away ( the cat was just a black blob that moved ) or gave so much detail it was hard to focus on what you were saying and doing. The colors were inaccurate because of such a high contrast. I considered turning it off multiple times but didn’t and by the end of the video I was motion sick and had a headache. I appreciate that this could be an artistic take and just wanted you to know how it may affect some people.
I am so sorry to hear this Amy, but thank you so much for the comment. It is important we hear back everybody's views 🙂
Those logs were huge great work clearing the land. I loved the spectacular sunset and also the music. Ye are all doing a great job maithu
Thanks 👍 😊
Pine is ok for burning outside but not in your inside fireplace. Pine is a softwood that burns easily, making it a popular choice for kindling. However, its high sap and resin content can cause it to burn quickly and create a lot of smoke. As a result, pine is not the best choice for indoor fires, as it can leave a sticky residue and produce a strong, unpleasant smell. Excellent days of work!
Agreed. The impact of burning too much pine for chimney efficiency is a big negative as well. Also, too much creosote buildup from pine can actually be dangerous and cause chimney fires if not cleaned out often enough. Best use for pine is kindling, camp fires, and outdoor fire pits. Burn hardwoods for the majority of your indoor fires.
Thankyou both, yes you are right unfortunately pine is not the best for indoor fires, we plan to leave it for a couple of years to season.
Lots of hard work. I know it will be worth it. Do your kids help? Our kids did although not with smiles on their faces. Lol.
Haha laughed where you said the lack of smiles! Ash enjoys chopping the wood, Ciara is full time working now so not at home that much anymore 😔
You guys worked so hard!!!! That was crazy about of cutting! Great job still away to go but great job!🎉
It's a huge job, but we just have to get stuck in 😄
Beautiful editing, music choice, and wow what a huge amount of work you all did! As always, you inspire me❣️
Thank you so much, glad you enjoyed it 😊
STIHL products are top notch, you get what you pay for. They’re made in Switzerland, Germany and the US. Most vlogs on utube in Europe and other countries that do yard work, etc.., use it I’ve noticed, for good reason.Keep well and warm . M.
So true, it's a keeper 😉
Here in Ontario we heat our house mainly with wood, we have baseboard heaters as back up. We burn about 3 full bush cords of wood every winter. Each of those are 4’ high, 4’ wide and 8’ long. We have an airtight wood stove, and I love it. Wood can be dirty, and a lot of work but nothing beats sitting beside it on a frosty - 20 winters day. If we lose power one can also cook meals on the top surface. We once spent 11 days without hydro, and no generator. Then I had an old Findlay Oval Cookstove, it heated water and had an oven. The saving grace was the fact that we lived on a lake so were able to make a hole in the ice and bring pails of water in to flush toilets. The hardest part was boredom, living in the dark from 4 pm.
How wonderful, thankyou so much for sharing your experiences, we love hearing about them ❤️
Happy new year lads!
Happy new year Maeve 🤩
Beautiful videography! Did you know that your Stihl chainsaw may have a winter setting? Lots of videos here on the UA-cam on how to change that setting. Cheers from a chilly (38°F) North Carolina USA
Thanks for the info, yes I think Rob has come across that, he's super impressed with it 😄
great job folks and happy new year to you all
Happy new year! 😍
Love a bit of chainsaw porn 😂you can't beat a Stihl
The Party Barn should be an upside down house, bedrooms downstairs, and Party space with views and large windows upstairs.
Nice idea, thankyou 😊
Sweet time-lapse! You have accomplished so much!
Thank you so much for watching it 😊
Great job 👏👍🎉
Thank you! Cheers!
❤🎉 Great team work! Still for the win! Good job!
Thank you!! 😁
Enjoyed watching u. Thx so much. Rest some now as well. Bye.😊
Glad you enjoyed it 😊
Hello from snowy Virginia! I'm cozy and warm, having my lunch and watching. Great job! You're making a lot of progress. I think you should give Rooney her own channel. She's stealing the show for sure! Give her a big hug for me. Enjoy the rest of your weekend! 😊🧡🐦☃❄
Awesome! Thank you! Oh she would be thrilled with a Rooney cam!
Well, you certainly made short work of that between you, what a massive clearance. Well worth the hard work, no worrying about wood for a good time ahead. Well done, ploughing through all of those trunks branches and chopping, great teamwork :)
Yes we can't quite believe the amount of wood we have!
We’ve been doing chainsawing for 28 years and we’ve only ever bought Stihl saws, they are more expensive up front but last longer and will hold their value better for selling.
Yes we have learnt this the hard way. We probably did know this but I guess everyone loves a Lidl bargain before it goes wrong 🙈
What a job!you did good.its going to be beautiful.and the music loved it!take care all of you ❤
Thankyou for commenting 😊
Great Sound Track good taste Big Man
Thanks for listening 🎧😊
What a beautiful episode the colours of the landscape and the music you chose were amazing, plus the starry sky. You both work so hard and deserve a lot of praise for what you are doing, not forgetting your children who work behind the scenes. Thank you for sharing your story. 😊😊😊😊
Thank you very much Yvonne, Rob has started to put a lot of effort into the lighting and sound, it's nice to hear from someone who has noticed 😊
Time for the hydraulic wood splitter rental I'm thinking!
Yes although both Rob and Ash enjoy the workout, not sure how long that will last though🤣
That looked exhausting but you got so much done, when it’s cold it takes a while to push yourself out there but once your out you love it ? Or at least that’s me 😁 firewood chopping is my nemesis
Tell me about it
Great job! less editing, more cutting and chopping 😂 Nice to see the pass on the Ballydehob to Bantry Road. I remember driving over that in the dense fog thank God I knew the road. Love from Carol in Canada 🇨🇦
I know right.... but then we'd keep the joy of wood chopping to ourselves lol
Mammoth job processing all those trees ! It will be great to see that space reclaimed 😊
Can't wait! Only about 1/3 way thru!
❤❤❤
😊😬
That looks like a ton or five of firewood! I would store what i could and see if any neighbours would like to help themselfes to a few loads. Building up the deadwood hedge and burn the rest of the branches. Loads of work but i can imagine the space all green in summertime with wildflowers poping up from seeds buried deep just waiting for a spot in the newely opened soil 😍 Your place is absolutely lovely and its so nice to get to see the whole farm!
Thankyou so much for watching 😊
@@WestCorkWander if you can borrow a woodchipper that would render the branches into a usefull product. Before you get to dig the roads you could 'paint' them inn with woodchips and be able to use them in the dryer periods with lightweight cars etc.
