This is how I got through the treshold of mild curiosity to genuine intereste. Speedrunning is cool but requires a fascinating and immersive package to get through initial indifference. The first time I watched goldeneye speedrunning snippets they bore me to death, running with face down, licking walls all the time, nothing exciting or intruiging. Frigate video had good enough story spiced with expertise to keep it interesting enough to cross that barrier. I still am not a big fan of goldeneye speedrunning but I enjoy the journey, the creativeness and persistence of speedrunners and the story.

As far as I'm concerned the internet hasn't changed since 2004, Newgrounds has been around since 1999, names of services have changed and stuff, videos are in higher resolution, but it has only been a upgrade to things that were already in place. Pop up ads still exist. Java has been nearly eliminated. FunnyPart isn't really a thing anymore. But the more things change, the more they stay the same.

This has everything I look for in a Karl Jobst video. A deep explanation of every optimization, breakthrough runs in their entirety, grainy 20 year old footage that you've preserved of old runs and, most of all, the inclusion of all the rich history in generous detail. There is certainly room for a shorter video on these runs that some would find more palatable, but I appreciate that you truly take that deep dive for us fans that really want to immerse ourselves in the story of how these runs came to be and the players that made them possible. Your formula is perfect as far as I'm concerned. You video game speedrun historian LEGEND. brb gotta go buy a wallet.
