@@T-1001 i could not, lol
That's a running issue. There have been times where highly respected runners have been caught cheating repeatedly after getting away with it for years.
Or no clues at all. If a moderator, chosen because of his depth of knowledge in the game, best knows what can be looked for, what's to stop him from faking his own run? Nobody would suspect a learned player from cheating, but they tend to be the ones who want the record the hardest.
On the DOOM one I noticed that there wasn't a frame where the time went from 0-4, but straight to 4. On the real DOOM run, it showed the number increasing to 4 for a frame or 2

And also almost useless since they can check every frame and imput so it would be pretty obvious lol
@@harleck9119 As far as I understand, demo files *only* contain input, which the game then replays. This means it should actually be fairly easy to create fake perfect replays for someone who's familiar with the file format and with editing binary files.
Also, I think Karl is just meme'ing when he says it's secret and "censors" the message explaining it. It's still obvious from the un-censored part of the message that the issue is some sort of signature placed into the demo files when you create them with a certain piece of TAS software. You can download the demo files and open them in Notepad and see said signature right there.
I haven't even played any Doom game once in my entire life but as a programmer I think I could create a world record demo after a few days of fiddling LOL.
Makes sense that they require you to stream even your failed attempts.
@@taylankammer I have understood (from other Karl's videos) that moderators, and usually people that know deeply about DOOM, can see which inputs were pressed every frame of the run, so using a TAS would expose certain behaviours that are virtually impossible for a human to permorm in a real time run.
I'm not a programmer so I don't want to "invalidate" your words lol but since you haven't played DOOM at all, you won't be able to recreate a realistic run that could pass as a real WR (nevertheless probably you could fabricate a crazy run tho)
Karl said in that same video that when you get to know what inputs are realistic to permorm in order to try to cheat a run, you could just try to get the time you want to fake because it would be easier lmao.
That's what I can recall from a Karl´s video that exposes DOOM cheaters, I strongly suggest it, very good content ;)
I saw him bump the door in the first DOOM example and was like "Aha! I saw it!", and then I saw him bump the door again and realized I know nothing.
I missed it in the first doom clip, but saw it in the second. Thought I was on to a winner... oh, well...
The only difference I think I saw was that the start of the first clip had significantly less momentum at the start than the second clip while both having equal times. So either the first one was the fake one, removing some frames here and there along the way, or the second one was faked, removing some frames early on.
The first time I saw the second I said, "hol up this too fast, and how he not lose momentum after hitting the door"

Well, if you think about, that's kind of it.
In Super Mario Brothers, both RTA and TSA runners use tricky inputs to accelerate to full speed faster.
In Goldeneye, there's an exploit that involves holding the stick forward on the second controller to accelerate faster.
And I'm pretty sure there's some comparable technique that allows you to accelerate faster in Doom.
Hell, even the Mario Kart games have mechanics to start the race in full speed, and it's actually an intended mechanic. It's called the "Rocket Start".

@@osmosisv9502 You are lying
9:48 "I'm so smart that I'm the *only person to ever notice* that the sprites in these several frames overlap." The problem isn't ignorance. The problem is arrogance.
Experts are wrong sometimes, a lot of times actually, they shouldn't be allowed to respond to criticism by telling people that they are idiots and they should shut up. The problem is ignorance, these people aren't informed on how these games work, or the fallacy of them being likely to spot a difference like that, and they should be informed.
There was nothing arrogant there, the piranha plants are an oft-cited piece of "evidence" of cheating by people who don't know how wonky the hitboxes are (and SMB1 WRs are probably the speedruns that have the most mainstream appeal so there's a lot of people watching who wouldn't know that). In Kosmic's Any% WR vids he puts an FAQ in the description and it's the first entry there. And in a video about spotting fake speedruns, it's very relevant.
Especially that even with a lot of modern games, models often still tend to overlap to a point where most games just use the good old pill shaped hitbox for players, even if the model is slightly too large for that hitbox. Shooters being pretty much the only outlier there since they need to account on what does and doesnt count as a hit, and hitting the air between someones legs being a killing blow would raise a lot of eyebrows.
So essentially, it is ignorance. People who claim that have either only played shooters, or they simply havent played games enough to encounter something like that.
Arrogance is more like the dunning-kruger effect, where the more ignorant you are, the more arrogant you tend to be on a subject, untill you have studied the subject enough to know all the variables and only then will arrogance show up again, but educated arrogance, in this case, would be the mods.
No your not alone

This video demonstrates perfectly why the methods of adjudication used by organizations like Twin Galaxies have bred so many high profile examples of cheating. Having a team of referees or moderators that oversee any and all games just doesn't work. The first one I didn't notice the color change in the Golden Eye videos but I did notice how #1's objective A appeared faster than seemed normal which is what clued me in. The mario one was obvious as that is a game I'm entering with the goal of sub 5 min. The doom one was impossible for me, until you mentioned the door trick, which let me know it was #2.
The fact that the method for their analysis of the doom demos is being kept secret is really putting me on edge
Yeah man, I want to know what it is and why it’s important to keep the knowledge hidden from the general public. I’m not a speedrunner, nor do I play Doom, but learning the subtle ways to spot cheating/other illegitimate aspects is very interesting.
it would be really interesting to gather all the top speedrunners of a game and have them act as one person
then they would stream all there attempts and rapidly get "better" at the game and the last run would be a perfectly edited wr run
so it would basically be impossible to tell if the wr speedrun is fake other then people doing these runs leaking it out
or people thinking that the "one player" is getting good at game way to quickly compared to other runners
the thing im talking about actually happened in the game geometry dash once a player named Qwer a south Korean player that actually turned out to be a bunch of players in the gd community
audio discrepancies would get them, in fact a lot of splicing these days are caught by audio, the footage might be of the same game but it was recorded in different places with different devices

Raycon is overrated too
Ditto!
They don't even need to sponsor their game anymore, since people keep repeating it themselves.
I've only answered correctly the doom one :P here are my conclusions
-real run did a little mouse movement (left and then right) before going into the brown walls room. TAS moved the angle precisely while going there
-real run was aiming almost all the time on the left when he was about to press the button. TAS quickly turned the camera on the right to reach the "interaction ratio" of the button much earlier
Is this correct Karl? :PP
Karl said the fake one was not a TAS run, just an edited version of a earlier speedrun of the first example's runner made to see the potential of a sub 5 second run.
It’s not a TAS run - the input file has been edited frame by frame
The movement of that TAS run is actually identical to what a human can do, the edits were minimal over a legit run that was slightly over 5 seconds, so you can't tell the difference just looking at the run, for this case it's needed to look at the demo file.
Honestly, I don't even like watching speed running videos. Only those explaining the different techniques 😂
I just love how many ways there are to break games ❤️

Unless it's a Ghost n' Goblins run, it seems.
Yup
Nice way to joke about that TAS run that was posted on there years ago.
Speedrunners themselves are the best people to find faults in a fake run, but they are also the best people to fake them, as they know exactly what to look for.
I was actually able to detect the Doom fake. There is an unnatural acceleration right at the end after the door opens. It is a blink and you miss it thing, but I was able to see it straight away. Without knowing "exactly what to look for" I was able to spot this.
All in all, my abilities to spot fakes have increased from watching this video as I have now been made aware of more possible methods by which a fake run could be generated. Well done.
